Deleting photos from the Library and Disk

When I delete photos from my iPhoto 5 library because I don't want the photo anymore and would like to free up disk space, it is easy enough to do. However when I look in my Library folders, the image still exists in the Month/Day folders. I had to review all of those folder to find the photos I just deleted and delete them again, at that point I gained the disk space I was hoping for. Is there a more straight forward way to delete the photo from the disk at the same time you are deleting it from the library? Ideally some fancy keyboard combo.

hi Blake,
images you delete in the iPhoto library are not deleted from hard drive UNTIL you empty iPhoto's trash bin. iPhoto keeps the image from your view in the library but it is still sitting safely in the dated folder in the finder, just in case you change your mind. When you are absolutely sure you want to delete the image go to the menu bar and hit iPhoto/Empty trash (there is also a keyboard shortcut listed there. I think it is shift command Delete.)
The trash bin is all the way on the bottom of the source column.
You can control click on the trash icon and empty the trash that way too.
Make sure you empty the trash often and don't let too many images pile up there. iPhoto has been known to choke on trying to trash too many images at a time.

The only way you can do that is to import them into your library first, but you may have done that already.
The easiest way to tell is to select a photo from the photostream album in iPhoto and ctrl-click on it, if it gives you the option to import it isn't in your iPhoto library, if it offers you the option to show in library it has already been imorted.

  • Delete photo from iPhoto library and HDD

Hopefully I'm not repeating a previous thread...
Not being an expert, am I correct in saying that iPhoto only changes its version of the photo when editing it?
Also, if you delete the photo by moving it to the trash can, it doesn't physically delete it from the HDD? (When you empty the trash can)
This causes a problem for a few reasons.
I have just loaded Medialink PS3 which allows the iMac to serve the PS3. (BTW - Good product)
If you point Medialink to the original HDD folder then this still includes photos I thought I had deleted.
Also If I want to burn a cd with the photo folder external to iPhoto , the "deleted" photos are also burnt.
I copied all of the photos from a windows PC, and Picasa allowed you to physically delet from its own folder as well as the HDD.
    Doesn't iPhoto 09 allow this?
What would iPhoto do if I went through and cleaned up the external folder and deleted jpgs or edited using Canon editing software? If using the external editor, would iPhoto reflect the changes?
    Sorry if this is verbose.
    regards,

You might want to have a llook at the iPhoto tutorials. They cover a lot of these basics.

And the version of iPhoto you are using?
I'm not at all sure that a Referenced Library is what you want. In fact I strongly recommend against it. But however:
    *How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    +Some Other Comments+
iPhoto will not touch any file outside its library. Period.
It will copy files on import and leave existing files untouched,
It will delete files within the Library but not outside the Library.
When you choose to go with a Referenced Library you are deciding that You want to manage the Files. You want to import them from the camera, you want to sort them however you want and you want to delete them yourself. That's the point of a referenced Library.
I just did a test by editing a photo using Canon Professional and the changes were not reflected in iPhoto. And vise versa.
The point of iPhoto is that you interface with your Photos via the Application. Like Addressbook for your contacts, iTunes for your Music, it's the go-to app for your Photos.
So, you want to edit Photos, you go to iPhoto and use the External Editor:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.

  • Re: iPhoto deleting photos from old library and new library

Hello.  I really hope someone can help me.  I'm about to tear my hair out.  I recently copied my iPhoto library to an external hard drive because I'm seriously out of space on my 24"iMac (2008).  I am a photographer and have a mess of an iPhoto library to clean up.  It was a VERY large volume, and it ran overnight.  It appears that everything transferred fine.  I did the transfer exactly as instructed by many forums: Home > Pictures > iPhoto Library, drag and drop to WD My Book 1 TB EHD formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Then I opened iPhoto via the icon in the dock while holding down the Option/Alt key and chose the new location on the ext drive to point iPhoto to the new library.  My problem is this:   I went into the old library, which I renamed iPhoto Library - Old (after the fact, which I hope didn't cause the problem), and deleted an event that I didn't care about.  To my surprise, it deleted the event in BOTH libraries.  I have tried repeatedly to point iPhoto to the right library, both using the dock and going through applications.  It is as though the 2 libraries are somehow inter-connected, and not separate.  At times, I will open the old library through finder, but I can see it highlight the icon for the EHD and it opens that.  I am at my wits end, as at any given point in time I don't know which library it has brought up.  I am trialling Aperture, and am trying to move photos over to Aperture from iPhoto, but really need to free up space on my internal drive to be able to work with it. I'd eventually like to move the masters to the EHD, etc., but I'm still in the learning curve with all that (I'll be hitting that forum soon, I'm sure).  My highest priority right now is to figure out how to separate the 2 iPhoto duplicate libraries so I can delete the photos from the desktop without affecting the photos on the External Hard Drive.  I've tried everything I can think of and everything I found while scouring these forums.  Here is the information I think you would need:
                                                             - 24" iMac Intel, Snow Leopard (10.6.8), iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5)
                                                             - 2 TB WD External hard drive running Time Machine, (so everything from the desktop is backed up).
                                                             - 1TB WD My Book that is formatted as I mentioned above, which I copied the iPhoto Library to.
                                                             - 1 soon-to-be-bald photographer.
Thanks very much in advance for any help anyone can give me.  I really like my hair, and don't wish to lose it!
    Gail
PS - Just a little background.  I have been working on this whole space issue for more than a week now.  This is the 3rd new external hard drive I've had this week due to "issues."  Had a problem with all 3 but finally figured this one out, and it's now working fine.  I am so far behind in some photo editing work because of the hard drive space issues, and I cannot seem to resolve them no matter how hard I try.  Hence the frustration.  Thanks again.

THANK YOU LARRY!!  I did not realize that once you switch libraries, it kept you in that library until you switch back using the option key. I thought that the iPhoto icon would take me to the new library, and going through finder to the old library name would take me to the old one.  I was actually in the new library the whole time, and all of the images I deleted were deleted from there.  I just switched back to the old library and all of the photos were still there.  I also tried deleting from the old library, which is what I wanted to do, and then switching to the new library and it did not affect the photos there at all.  So, this was indeed the answer.
Whew, what a relief. You're a life saver.  I might actually be able to get some work done now.
    Thanks again so much.

    1. What format is the external drive? It sounds like it's ina format that Macs can't write to. Is it a NAS or NTFS?
    2. Easiest thing: just move your iPhoto Library to the external
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

  • HT6378 Can I delete photos from Iphone 6 and still have the photos remain in Icloud?

I deleted photos from my iphone and photos are also deleted from Icloud. Can I just delete from phone and not icloud?

With iCloud Photo Library (Beta) enabled the full sized photos will be stored in iCloud, and on your iPhone you will have smaller sized photos, so you can browse and share them. This save space on your device, and you can access your photos also from the the iCloud web page.    https://www.icloud.com/
But be aware, that turning on iCloud Photo Library Beta will essentially stop all easy ways to upload photos from a Mac to your iPhone. iTunes Photo sync will no longer work, and you will not be able to stream photos from a Mac to your iPhone with "My Photo Stream". Only "My Photo Stream" from the iPhone to a Mac or other devices will still work.

  • IS THERE A WAY TO DELETE A PURCHASE FROM IBOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY AND ICLOUD, OR AT LEAST A WAY TO HIDE WHAT YOU'VE PURCHASED IN THIS NEW APP?

Dear Apple, my name is Jack, and I recently upgraded my computer to the new OSX 10.9, which included among many other apps the iBooks one, in this new iBooks app for Mac I accidentally downloaded by mistake a sort of obscene japanese comic book, since the moment that this happened I've been trying to remove this content from my iBooks library, which is being impossible due to the fact that even if a successfully delete the book with the backspace key it still appears but with an iCloud symbol, and if I go to my iCloud settings theres no options to stop iBooks form sharing this on iCloud for there is no "iBooks" option on iCloud settings, I even followed a Tutorial on the apple web page about hiding your purchases that explains how to, but in this new version of iTunes there is no such option as "connect" under the Store menu of iTunes, or even if I make my way to my iTunes purchases this new iBook purchases does not appear. I just want to be able to open my new iBooks app without having to see this obscene japanese comic book all over the app. My request is for you people to add an option to completely remove books from the library and from iCloud, please, so far these new OSX was amazing and this is the very first time I have something to complain about.

Well as a matter of fact, I already found the solution. The option is a little bit hidden, and this will remove your purchases completely from the library and iCloud. What you have to do is this: 1.- Open iBooks app, and the first thing you will get it's your library, then at the top left corner of the window click on iBooks Store. Once iBooks store is open you will have four options at the top: "Featured", "Top Charts", "Categories" and "Top Authors", you have to click on "Featured" or "Categories" it's the same but you have to be on any of those two.
2.- Once you are in "Featured" or "Categories" at the right side of the window there's going to be your email address that you use as your apple id, and in "Categories"  you will see at the right side the topic "All Categories"  and bellow that you will see your email address again. Doesn't matter if you are on categories or featured the option bellow your apple id is going to be QUICK LINKS, and bellow that there's gonna be four options: Account. Purchased, Redeem and Support. Click on Purchased.
3.-Once you clicked on purchased and the Purchased window is open you will see in the middle of the window two options : "All" and "Not in my Library", click on "All", then you will have all your purchases, there you will only have to put the cursor on the book you want to completely delete, but without clicking on it, just putting the cursor in the book and a black cross will appear at the top left corner of the book, click on the cross, if it ask you are sure you want to hide or delete the content just click the affirmative option.
4.- In the top left corner click library again, once in your library you have to find the options that are at the very top of your screen, the ones that are in the same bar as your computer name, date and time, volume and in the case of macbooks the wifi signal and the battery. Those options are: iBooks, File, Edit, View, Go, Store, Window and Help. Click on "View" , when you get all the options of "View" you'll have to find the one that says "Show Purchases in iCloud" and most likely would have a check mark, if it does not have a check mark close it and skip to step 5, if it does have a check mark just click on this option so the check mark disappears.
5.- Last step. Now you just have to close the app, completely, so go to your dock and give a secondary click on iBooks app and on the secondary click options click Quit. Just open iBooks again and there will be there no more.
Hope this is of some help to any of you, and sorry if this was tricky or if I'm not very good at explaining. I figured this by myself so if any of you does not get this explanation just send me an email, I'll be happy to help you with it.

Please help needed os x lion I wish to transfer photos from the iPhoto library to a album or folder then delete them from the Library but when I do this it also deletes them from the album ? how do I do this please.

Albums are not places to store photos, they're more like "labels" you can apply to photos to better organize them. A single image file can be in multiple albums... they are not copies, it's simply been labelled as being in all those albums. So what you're trying to do doesn't make sense, because it's based on incorrect assumptions.
The iPhoto library will always show all photos that you have added to iPhoto.
