Deleting Photos in iPhoto and Finder

I just bought a MacBook Pro that will arrive Monday and I'm getting everything organized on my iMac so it will be easy to transfer everything, including my photo library. I'm using Adobe Bridge CS3 to look through photos and then using Finder to delete photos, which moved them to the trash on the dock. I have a lot of duplicates (I have a pretty happy shooting finger that has only slightly improved since I got my first dSLR 4 years ago). Today I opened up iPhoto and saw a whole folder/roll that I had previously deleted and trashed. The weird thing was I was able to open the photos in my external editor (Photoshop CS3)....I was expecting some kind of error that said it couldn't find the file, since I had deleted it, but that didn't happen. So, why am I still able to open deleted photos? It's like everything is saved twice, once within iPhoto and once within Finder, but that makes no sense. I've been deleting photos within the iPhoto/Pictures 'Originals' folder of Finder. Isn't that the 'master copy?' How/why are deleted photos still showing up in iPhoto?
At this point, I'm thinking it would be easier to manually move the folders I want to my new MBP, rather than dropping my whole iPhoto library at once. I really don't want to search through the iPhoto rolls and delete duplicates AGAIN. I guess the bigger question I have is, what is the most efficient way to organize photos? I'm not using keywords or anything at this point. A 'Roll' in iPhoto consists of a folder in Finder, and each import is its own roll. I'm debating iPhoto '09/Aperture 3/Lightroom for my new MBP. I guess I'm a little lost, and maybe once I get to use iPhoto '09 for a while, that will help me make a decision. I have somewhere on the order of 12,000 photos if that matters.
Any advice would be appreciated!

I'm using Adobe Bridge CS3 to look through photos and then using Finder to delete photos, which moved them to the trash on the dock.
If you have done this you have destroyed your iPhoto library and will have to start over - you must NEVER make any changes of any sort to the content or structure of the iPhoto library using the finder or any program other than iPhoto - iPhoto is a relational database and making changes to its files from external sources will corrupt the library and case you to have to start over
It's like everything is saved twice, once within iPhoto and once within Finder,
Not unless you have changed the default setting for the advanced preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" - which is strongly not recommended
Based on what you have done that is your only choice.
A 'Roll' in iPhoto consists of a folder in Finder, and each import is its own roll
This is not the case - iPhoto is a database program and the folders do not necessarily correspond to events (rolls went away with iPhoto '08)
you must chose one program and use it - if you mix bridge and iPhoto (or any other two programs) you will continually have a mess on your hands as you do now
If you shoot RAW you may find Aperture a better choice than iPhoto

  • Delete photos in iPhoto and External HDD  simultaneously?

Hello. I have 256SSD so its too little for me to save my large photo gallery on laptop. I use for it external HDD.  So i have next problem: when i delete photos in iPhoto they are deleted from only application and it stays in EXT HDD, but I want iPhoto to do it simultaneously, when i delete in iPhoto it should delete in hdd too. In preferances there is no such feature. Couldnt find anything in google about this subject. If there's no built in feature what you suggest me to do to solve this problem? thanks

If a manged library iPhoto will delete the original file that was imported into it.
If a referenced library you will have to delete the "source" file after deleting the photos from the library.
We strongly recommend against a "referenced" library because of the problems it's liable to encounter.

  • How to delete photos from iPhoto and hard drive at the same time.

I need to remove some files from my iMac G5 in order to free up some space. I have some photos on my machine that I would like to delete. Is there a setting I can change so that I completely remove a photo from my machine when I delete the iPhoto thumbnail? If not, what is the best way to remove photos from my machine, and not leave thumbnails in iPhoto to photos that no longer exist on my machine etc. I'm using iLife 08 and the most recent version of Leopard on a third generation iMac G5.

To remove file from iPhoto and the HD simply put the files in the iPhoto trash and then go iPhoto Menu -> Empty trash.
This works if you're using iPhoto in the default setting, where the files are copied to the Library on import. If, however, you have a referenced library, you'll need to trash the files in your own folder structure yourself.

  • Deleting photos from iphoto and hard drive

I'm new to macs and have been reading a lot about this subject but I still don't get it.
When I got this new macbook I dumped all my photos from the old PC onto the new hard drive. When I import photos into iPhoto, I left the advanced tab  "copy items to the iPhoto library" unticked. This I understand means I'm running a referenced library. Now when I want to delete a photo from iPhoto, I must delete it from events and then empty the trash. Should I expect the deleted photo to have been removed form the hard drive location from where it was imported originally since I asked iPhoto not to copy the file?

This I understand means I'm running a referenced library.
    Correct.
Now when I want to delete a photo from iPhoto, I must delete it from events and then empty the trash.
Correct. That removes it from iPhoto.
Should I expect the deleted photo to have been removed form the hard drive location from where it was imported originally since I asked iPhoto not to copy the file?
No. When you opted to not copy the file you said, in effect, "I want to do my own file management". So that means you get the files from the camera yourself, decide where to store them yourself and now, must delete them yourself.
It's but one of the reasons experienced users recommend against reference libraries.

  • Deleting Photos From iPhoto And Disk

I just bought my first Mac 4 days ago, and still learning all the applications on it. I'm setting up iPhoto '09 and just finished importing my photo collection, and realized theres a lot I want to delete, is there a way to delete them from both the iPhoto library and the HD at the same time? I'm using the default "Copy Items To iPhoto Library Option"
    Thanks In Advance

I'm using the default "Copy Items To iPhoto Library Option"
Yes it does if you're using the default setting.
However, where are you dragging the photos from - and to?
If you drag a pic from an Album to the trash, it removes it from the Album only, not the Library.
So you must drag from the Library - that is either an Event or Photos view.
Then, you must drag it to the iPhoto trash on the left hand pane - not the Trash on the Dock
    Then you must empty it.
Note: if you have files on your HD that you then imported to the Library, well iPhoto copied them there, right? What iPhoto trashes is the file +inside the Library+ not the ones you already had on the disk. iPhoto will not do anything to a file outside its library.
If you're doing all this correctly then you might have a damaged DB. Where are you seeing these files left after trashing?

  • Delete photos in both iPhoto and Finder at the same time??

Is there any way I can delete photos in iPhoto AND at the same time delete them permanently in the finder?
We all take too many pictures with out digital cameras and we can't say for sure which once are good with just looking at the camera... so we have to import ALL of them to iPhoto. When we do that, they also get saved in the Finder. When you delete the bad photos in iPhoto you still sit on the bad photos in Finder...
Does anyone know an easy way to delete BOTH at the same time?
    Thank you

I'm not sure I understand your set up:
And I wanted to let you know that under Preferences the box "copy items to the iPhoto Library" is checked.
So, all your pics are copied into the iPhoto Library. BUT you also have copies in the Pictures Folder. Why do you have two copies? They don't count as a back up because they aren't on a different volume, all they are doing is wasting disk space.
If you let iPhoto manage the files then you have no need to access them in the Finder. With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
I'm not sure I understand your problem.

  • Managing Photos in iPhoto and Folders

So I am embarrassed. I have been deleting photos in iPhoto and ASSuming they are deleted in their 'home' folder - nope. Is there any way to force iPhoto to be a file manager and any photos that are not in the app are deleted? For the future, is there a method of deleting the photo in iPhoto that will also delete it off the computer?
    Thanks!

    No
iPhoto is a database and manages the photos in its library - deleting photos and emptying the iPhoto trash will totally delete the photo from the iPhoto library
iPhoto will not do anything with any photos outside the iPhoto library - either un-imported or imported to iPhoto using a referenced library (which is not recommended for many reasons)

  • If I delete photos from iPhoto on my ipad can I reimport them to my ipad from iTunes

If I want to delete photos from iPhoto, and I have transferred them to iTunes by exporting them.  How do I delete them from the iTunes cache so I can export new photos from iPhoto?

Let me answer your question this way.... If you import photos from your iPad to your computer, and then delete them from the iPad, you will be able to transfer them back to the iPad by syncing them using iTunes, or by using a WiFi Photo Transfer app.
As long as the photos are moved to your computer for storage, you can safely delete them from the iPad.

  • I just downloaded 950 photos on iPhoto and deleted them off my camera and now under last import there is only 4 photos and i can't find the others?? There is a whole bunch of blank events in the library with no photos in them all with todays date? Help!!

Yes - you need a min of 10 GB just to operate - with just 1 you certainly can lose photos and other critical things - you need to make space immediately - probably by moving your iPhoto library to a volume formatted Mac OS extended -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

I was importing photos to iphoto and somehow lost access to my iTunes library. when i open iPhoto, it asks me to select a library, but there are no photo libraries present for me to select. I cant find my pictures and have no access to my iPhoto.

somehow lost access to my iTunes library.
What does iTunes have to do with this?   Also more specific information might be helpful.
What system and iPhoto versions are you running?
Where are you being asked to select a library?  What kind of library, iPhoto or iTunes?
What do you see when you first launch iPhoto?

  • How do I delete photos in Iphoto library that have not been imported?

How do I delete photos in Iphoto library that have not been imported?

How did they get there and how do you know that they are there?
If they were not imported and iPhoto is not aware of them then you can be sure your current backup is up to date and tested, quit iPhoto and drag them to the finder trash - But be very careful because if you trash any items that iPhoto knows about you will corrupt your library
Before you empty the trash, launch iPhoto again and be sure everything is working correctly
It is recommended that you never modify the iPhoto library using anything except iPhoto or iPhoto aware programs like iPhoto Library Manager including adding, modifying or deleting items, files or folders within the iPhoto library
Your current case may be one of the very unusual exceptions to this - if they were put there without iPhoto's knowledge
