Deleting playlists/songs

I just got an iPod nano as a gift and uploading some songs from my boyfriends computer on to it. How do I delete some playlists or songs that I don't like?
thanks!

Hi Angela,
You might want to try automatic updating too, just to see if you like it. You can choose selected playlists to be copied to your nano. Whenever you change those playlists in iTunes, your nano playlist will be automatically updated the next time you connect it to your computer. Very slick.

  • How do you delete a song from a playlist in iTunes?

I feel stupid asking this question but how do you delete a song from a playlist? right clicking doesn't give a menu option to do it, and neither does the file menu. The highlight/delete option doesn't work either.
Also, I've ended up with several copies of the same songs in my library . Can i delete the excess tracks in one go without highlighting them?
    Thanks,
    Dom

Option-delete will remove a selected track from a playlist AND the library. Delete will just remove the track from a regular playlist.
Yes, you need to highlight all the songs you want to delete. Sort your library by song title. This should put all the dups together for easy highlighting and deleting.

  • No longer able to delete/add songs/playlists onto ipod touch from itunes...

Yesterday, I decided to plug my mom's ipod into my macbook to transfer some songs onto the ipod for her. After transferring songs onto her ipod, using my macbook and itunes, I plugged my ipod back in to sync and delete songs. However, that option is no longer working. My ipod syncs, but I'm not able to delete/add songs, playlists, etc... I tried deauthorizing the laptop and reauthorizing it through itunes, restarting my ipod and laptop, and reinstalling itunes. But, nothing seems to work. Help please!

Where can I download the latest version of iTunes 6?
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/itunes605forwindows.html
As noted by some others, a working flow appears to be:
    1) remove 7 using the control panel add/remove programs [some also report removing the new version of quicktime that came with 7 -- I did].
    2) find the file 'iTunes Library {dateyou_loaded7}.itl' [usually in 'My Documents/My Music/iTunes/Previous iTunes Libraryes'], copy it up one directory level, and re-name it 'iTunes Library.itl'.
    3) download and install the above version 605.
I had already installed the gen5 firmware upgrade that came with 7, and it seems to work fine with version 6, with no need to 'downgrade' the firmware.
    Your mileage may vary.

  • How do I delete a song from my iTunes, keep it in the cloud and in the playlist it resides?

I don't know why, but a few weeks ago I was able to do this... Now I cannot figure it out.
I want to delete the music from my computer, keeping it in the cloud (with the download button on the side), and keeping the clouded song in the playlist it belongs to. Everytime i delete the song, its out of the playlist!

    Hello!
Interesting question. I just tested it myself and it is working as expected. My first suggestion is to ensure you're running the latest version of iTunes.
Then simply delete the song from your library, do NOT check the box to also remove it from iCloud, click Delete Item, then click Move to Trash. The little cloud icon appears next to it in the list. Then go view the playlist and the song will still be there, again with a cloud icon next to it. Additionally, next to the playlist in the sidebar, there will be a iCloud download button as well.

  • I am trying to delete duplicate songs in my library, when I click on the duplicate and go to edit to delete it, it asks me if i want to delete the playlist!

I am trying to delete duplicate songs in my library, when I go to edit to delete it, it asks me if I want to delete the playlist!

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning
to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Delete all music by: go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Restore from backup. See:

    bostonshazzer,
What model iPod do you have?  This feature is not supported on all models. You are positive you are holding down the Select (Center) button with the song highlighted until it disappears?  Are you sure you are in your On-the-Go playlist and not just a regular one?

  • Why can't I delete a song(s) out of a playlist?

I'm a PC guy that recently converted to mac. Loving it so far.
In itunes I am having a tough time figuring out how to simply delete a song or video from certain playlist? I've tried hitting "delete" and I've tried hitting the "delete X" button but I'm not sure I'm doing that correctly.
I've tried deleting the actual file and then returning to delete it in itunes but it does nothing other than tell me that the link is invalid.
Am I missing the obvious on this?
    Thanks.

Couple of things, firstly you can delete a file from a playlist or smart playlist by pressing the Option and Delete keys, this will move the file to trash.
If all you want to do is exclude videos from a smart playlist then add a rule:
*Video Kind* is not *music video* (there are options for the other kinds there too)
or alternatively to exclude any videos:
    Kind does not contain video

  • How to delete multiple songs within playlist

Hi does anyone know how to delete multiple songs within a playlist on OS or Mac??  I have reached the limit in songs I can play offliine and would like to delete some of the songs that are on my playlist.  For example the last 100 songs.  I dont want to indiviually sit here and delete them one by one.  Thanks Ray

On ios i think the only way is to edit the playlist by clicking on the three dots. I dont own a mac, but on windows you can hold control and select the songs you want to delete. Or select a song, go to the last song you want to delete, hold shift and click on the song.

  • No free capacity even though I've deleted many playlists/songs

Help! I've deleted many songs but still my free capacity is still at Zero! How do I free up the space as I want to add on other new songs?

Jeff is right, if you don't delete the songs directly from your music list, it will not free up any space. If you are still having problems, try ejecting your iPod, turn it off, let it sit for a few, then re-plug it back in and see if it helps. If it still doesn't work, then I suggest you call Apple and ask them.

  • How to restore deleted playlists to an itouch after syncing with wrong device. Tried to search for device to restore under devices and it completely removed it as a device on itunes. Is there anyway to get the information back?

To start we have several users and devices on our itunes account....Several weeks ago I was using my itouch to create playlists for a few aerobics classes that I teach.  Right before I was about to unplug the itouch I got a notification that my itouch was full and didnt have any space left.  Since I was done with what I was doing at the time, I unplug my itouch and figured I would delete unwanted songs later to create more room. A week later, I went to sync my itouch into itunes and over the devices it told me that it was named another device and wanted to know if i wanted to sync the information to my itouch I had just plug in.  I had never seen this message before in all the other times I had used it, and at the time I didnt realize that it was giving my device the name of another user in my house. Without realizing it itunes started to sync the new information to my itouch.  I immediately unplugged the usb cable stopping the process.  I then replugged the usb cable in, hoping to get done what I needed to get done on my itouch thinking it might have just been a strange glitch. Also, since I hadn't notice any change on my itouch from the incorrect syncing, I continued to start itunes again.  This time it asked me the same question as before "did I want to sync the information from another ipod?". Since I didnt notice any changes before I just let it do the syncing not realizing at the time that it was earsing all the info I had on my itouch and replacing it with info coming from the other users ipod.
I contacted Apple and they gave me infomation on how I could go look for my itouch under devices and get the information back.  When I did this my itouch was no longer there under the devices and it was replaced with the new name that itunes had given my itouch.  This device is one of the first generation itouches and has never been backed up that I know of... So my question to you all is...Is there any way of getting my playlists back???? I spend countless hours creating these playlists for my classes and have been completely out of my mind trying to figure out how I can possibly get the infomation back. Please let me know if you think there might be a way to do this!!!

The devices that are listed are: 2 under the name of the device that synced incorrectly with mine and then 3 others that are not associated with my itouch. The name of the ipod, before the incorrect sycning is no longer under devices.  It has been replaced with the incorrect one because I can see the serial # of my ipod under the wrong name.
The playlists that are in my itunes library are from an ipod that I used a few times before I took this one over... Which happens to be the ipod that took on the ID of my itouch.
Both of these ipods used to be my kids.. I used my sons a few times and then switched to my daughters.  They each had their names attachted to their particular devices and now it just says my sons, which is the ipod that itunes was connecting to when all this happened. The really strange thing is my son doesnt use his ipod any longer and now uses his phone for music...So, it had been a while since that particular device was even synced to itunes!
    I hope this helps!

  • How do I delete duplicate songs, but keep a link in their original albums to the single copy of the song left, so it will play in each album in sequence as if it were still there?

    Greetings!
After importing my 300 or so CDs into iTunes, I found I have tons of duplicate songs.
Example: I have a song that came in a original album, then in again in a "Greatest Hits" album, then again in a "Hits of the 80's" album, and again in a soundtrack album. I have now have 4 copies of the exact same song.
How do I delete duplicate songs, but keep a link in their original albums back to the single copy of the song left, so it will play in each album in sequence as if it were still there?
I don't think this currently exists, but as my library keeps growing the duplicates keep growing.  It would be nice if Apple sees this and adds a way to link songs to multiple albums.
I don't want to create a custom playlist for every album that has a duplicate song or two (I'd have dozens of playlists) - thought about fixing it that way but not really practical.

To my knowledge, there is no way of doing what you want. The only workaround is to create playlists for the other albums containing the track, but that isn't practical for most people.
You could provide Apple with feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

  • Why wont itunes give me the option to delete a song from my computer as well as the itunes library??

I want to clean up my music library, but when I try to delete a song from iTunes it doesn't give me the option to delete the file for the song from my laptop. Is there a reason why??

If you are deleteing from a playlist, it won't ask to delete from the hard drive (unless you hold Shift and press Delete).
If you are deleting from the library and it is not asking you, go to iTunes prefs > Advanced and tick Reset all dialog warnings.

  • How can I delete EVERY song from my iPhone

I'm a user of Spotify so I have no need to have all of my songs on my iPhone, since I can just listen to all of them over the internet through Spotify.
I have an iPhone 3GS. I want to preserve as much hard drive space on my iPhone as I can and thus I want to delete every piece of music from my iPhone. When I tap that Music button on the home screen, I want it to bring up an empty screen, I want all of my songs blasted off into oblivion.
I've been spending the past hour trying to remove my songs and they just won't budge I don't use playlists. I simply have all of my music in my Music Library on iTunes. I have tried deleting every song from that library, syncing, with no luck. I've tried unticking everything, changing the sync options to only include ticked items, and it hasn't worked. I've tried enabling the manual settings, I went into my iPhone through iTunes, deleted every song and yet when I bring up the Music menu; every damned song is still there. I've tried disabling the syncing of music, then pressing the sync button (so that it syncs my other stuff, just not the music) and guess what; the **** songs are still there.
It really is annoying me now, so I thought I'd bring it to infinite wisdom of the minds of the internet. Anyone got an idea of how I can do it? I'm not great with Apple technology so I would appreciate any help anyone could give me. (I miss the days of cheap MP3 players when you could just go into Windows, select everything and tap the delete key.)
    Thanks in advance.

With Sync Music selected under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, deslecting Sync Music followed by a sync should remove all music from your iPhone. The same when switching from transferring music via the sync process to manually managing music and videos.
Since neither has worked, something is wrong.
I suggest restoring your iPhone with iTunes. Before doing so, don't have sync music selected under the Music tab and don't have manually manage music and videos selected under the Summary tab either so no music will be transferred to your iPhone after your iPhone is restored.
