Deleting preferences

I'm having an odd problem in AI CS6, and I first want to try trashing my preferences file, but I can't find it (sounding dumb).  When searching this forum's help files, I ran across references to user/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS6 Settings/en_US/ but I can't find that either (sounding even dumber).  I see users/myname/ but no library/preferences.  I try users/myname/roaming/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS 6 settings /en_us/x64  but nothing there gives me a file folder or a file named preferences (can't feel any dumber).  BTW, I am using the file options Show Hidden Files and Show Extensions, and I'm running PC Windows on a 64-bit machine.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, and what should I do instead?

If you're on Windows, then I'm not sure why you're looking for a path which refers to Mac path.
Please look here: C:\Users\<youruserprofilename>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS6 Settings\en_US\x64\AiPrefs

  • Indesign CC 2014 starts only by deleting preferences, stalls otherwise

Indesign CC 2014 Windows 7 all updates in place
For some inexplicable reason, if I attempt to start InDesign CC2014 by traditional means. (click on desktop icon or click on INDD file), the program stalls at "loading the application." If I delete preferences (shift+control+alt) during the starting sequence when I click on the desktop icon, the program will start and run normally. Any ideas on how to fix?

  • How to delete preferences?

Could someone please tell me how to go about deleting preferences for ITunes? I knew how to do it in OS9 but I have not yet figured out how to do it in Tiger. A friend of mine was listening to ITunes yesterday and writing a final paper when her G4 IBook crashed, told her the hard drive was Zeroed out and would not restart. I zapped the PRAM and it started fine so I am thinking that maybe if I trashed her ITunes preferences it might help her problem. I told her to get it backed up and try working without ITunes on and she had no problem the rest of the day.

and with the latest version of iTunes go into the User account to Start Items to get rid of the Helper thing or it will keep popping up in the Prefs.

I do not have a startup disk. I did try fsck (based on what I learned from your reply-thank you). This failed (fsck); here is the message:

  • Crashes when printing, deleted preferences file. Didn´t help. Lightroom version 5.6

    Printing module Lightroom
    using Lightroom templates
    Reinstalled Lightroom with latest update
Printing from Epson Easy photo print works fine
The problem must be a Lightroom issue. Searched forum for alternatives. And came up with deleting preferences file option

  • Forgot to check "delete preferences" option during uninstall...

I just uninstalled all of my CS6 programs but forgot to check the "delete preferences" option during the uninstallation process. Now I'm worried I have a bunch of junk left on my system.
I did a little digging and it seems like most of what was left behind is located in C:\Users\bitfidelity\AppData\Roaming\Adobe. Is this correct?

    Yes, that's correct
There are few preference saved at different location as well so you may also want to look at C:\Users\bitfidelity\AppData\Local\Adobe

  • Why is deleting preferences neccessary to prevent crashes?

Granted, I am relatively new to using Lightroom. I participated in the LR2 beta, provided suggestions in the adobe labs forum and am currently using the trail version of LR2. While reading a message in this forum, several comments were made regarding the deletion of preferences while trying to figure out why the persons machine kept freezing up on him. Could someone please explain why deleting preferences is necessary, and provide what steps to take to do so.
So far, LR2 is working great and I look forward to using it. I would just like to know if I need to delete preferences before I run into trouble.
Thanks, in advance, for your responses.
    Regards, JML

The presences trashing is a troubleshooting step if you are having severe stability issues. Lightroom should _NOT_ be crashing on a regular basis, but if it DOES crash, the odds are pretty good the preferences can become corrupted by the crash (or that the crash might be caused by corrupted preferences). So, this is a very specific step to take if you have or are crashing. Not something you need to do on a regular basis.
As for how to troubleshoot crashes and hangs,, it depends on you OS. Check the FAQS, in particular
Troubleshoot system errors or freezes in Photoshop Lightroom. It deals with Lightroom 1.x but the locations of the preferences are the samejust substitute Lightroom 2 for the original Lightroom name of the prefs.

  • I have set DELETE preferences but still don't have control!

I've read various posts and know exactly how to set my delete preferences to NEVER. Preferences/Accounts etc. So I have my trash set to never delete (vs one day, one week, one month)... but I only have the previous month's deleted email in the trash folder. Every day I check, and the corresponding day from a month ago is now the last date mail is saved. Anyone know what gives? The is the same on my home computer, and when I access Mac Mail from my computer at work.

Be wary of any advice I give about .mac, as I haven't used it ...
As far as I know, ,mac uses the imap protocol, so your mail messages are stored on a server (.mac). The deletion control settings you refer to are for mail stored in local mailboxes on your computer. I imagine it is possible to make similar settings in your account on the .mac server. Alternatively, download the mail from the server to your computer and the local settings will work - but then you won't have access to undeleted mail both at work and at home.

  • Can't start Photoshop without deleting preferences file

    Hi gang,
I have a Macbook Pro running Lion, OS X 10.7 that I purchased two months ago so it's relatively new. Just bought Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended and installed it on the computer a day ago. Software will not operate unless I hold option+command+shift when starting so that the preferences file is deleted. I'm hoping someone knows how to help me reset things.
I suspect that the problem stems from a plugin that I deposited into the plugins folder, because the software was working at first. I didn't piece this together until after the fact, but once I fired up the software a couple times after installing it, it worked fine each time. I noodled around and checked some things out to see what's new in CS5, then I went ahead and deposited a favorite plugin into the plugins folder. Things stopped working after this. Not positive the plugin is related, but thought I should mention it.
I removed the plugin of course, to no avail. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software three times. No difference. When I open the software without deleting the prefs file, it's just buggy and non-responsive. Can't start a new project, and thing just end up crashing every time. The software is useless without deleting the prefs file when firing it up.
Is there any hope of restoring things to normal? Thanks very much!

    Boilerplate-text:
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated?
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by keeping command-alt-shift pressed on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)
If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.

  • Indesign 5.5 won't open after deleteing preferences and uninstall/reinstall

I have had the Design Standard 5.5 suite installed for more than a year. A couple of times I have had trouble with Indesign and have successfully gotten it working again. My Indesign stopped opening again a couple of days ago. I tried deleting the preferences and the cached items as I have done previously (based on advice in these forums) and that didn't work. I uninstalled and reinstalled the program and it is still not opening. When I click on it, I get to "Starting up Service Registry" and it "disappears" without opening.
Any ideas on what I can do to get this program working again?
    Thanks!!

Well, I think we are getting closer! But I still need some help. I created a new user account and was able to re-login and InDesign opened just fine. But now I am not sure what to copy from my "test" user to my personal user. I tried copying these items
InDesign Defaults:Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\ (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).
InDesign SavedDataWindows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>\Caches\  (Note: Prior to version 6 [CS4] the language folder is not used).
But I still can't get it to start under me. (Actually, when I went into the "Roaming" one under me, that path didn't exist. So I just copied the whole thing from my test user over there. Maybe that's the issue?
Any final guidance is appreciated. I am getting gray hairs here!
    Andrea
    Hi,
I had similar problem. InDesign CS5 crash at startup, all other apps work fine.
    My op.system Windows XP SP3.
I solved the problem with following steps:
    1. Setup another user account (must be administrative) - let say "test"
    2. Login to the new account
    3. Start inDesign (in my case it started)
    4. Close inDesign
    5. Logout
    6. Login to your user account
    7. Copy preference files from "Documents and Settings\test\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign" to "Documents and Settings\your account\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign"
    8. Start inDesign
In my case it worked. All other actions described in this forum did not.
    Kind Regards,
    Zbigniew

  • How to delete preferences in Motion 5.1.1

Just thought I'd share this. I saw a post on fcp.co that they had introduced a way to delete the preferences for FCP in the latest update. I looked it up, and Motion 5.1.1 now has the same option.  If you hold down Command+Option when launching the application, you will get a dialog asking if you want to delete your preferences. Here's the link from the User Manual, under Resetting Motion Preferences:
    http://help.apple.com/motion/mac/5.1/#motnecc9c960

Thanks for pointing out this useful bit of information. It's good that the two related products are using the same method to do something. I assume FCPX and Motion are two separate teams so it's good that they communicate and adopt the same procedures to do something in their applications.

  • How can i reset my delete preferences

Hi, I recently update my itunes program and it changed my preference of deleting songs from both itunes and the computer.  Now itunes only deletes my files from the itunes program but not from my computer, how can I changed back to deleting the files from both itunes and computer?

    Hi Jeff,
    The link you indicated,

Has this suggestion for deleting the PC Adobe preferences info:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/genesisproject/2009/11/having_weird_behavior_with_an.html
Just to confirm, is this the name of the folder that needs to be deleted in order to reset the settings?

  • Is there any harm in deleting preferences too often?

Although it is always helpful (ie. things work more smoothly) after I delete the preferences, is there any concern in doing so?  It seems that I sometimes work faster than my computer would like me to work and that's when things begin to feel like they are being bogged down and I get the beach ball or skipping audio, etc.  Just curious if this could be a concern.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
    Midge

Not a problem as far as FCP X is concerned.
If you download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and perfectly safe, both to download and use).
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
With Preference Manager, you can backup the Prefs when FCP X (or any of the Apple Professional Applications) are working normally. Then when either of the applications are acting strangely, Trash the Preferences, then Restore from your backups (just a mouse-click).
If you trash the prefs and don't restore them, you will need to manually restore all your FCP X settings again, so it's a great idea to backup Preferences from time to time when FCP X is working well, then your backups are up to date.
These are my pet tips for improving performance:
FCP X runs very well (not perfectly, by any means) on my 2009 MacPro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 16 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
First, check the spec of your iMac against the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
Particularly your graphics card. If it's listed here, it's not suitable:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
If you are getting crashes, there is some conflict on the OS. Create a new (admin) user account on your system and use FCP X from there - if it runs a lot better, there's a conflict and a clean install would be recommended.
    Other ways to improve performance:
Keep projects to 20 mins or less. If you have a long project, work on 20 min sections then paste these into a final project for export.
Create Optimised media - most camera native files are highly compressed and need a great deal of processor power to play back - particularly if you add titles, filters or effects. ProRes 422 takes up much more hard drive space but is very lightly compressed. It edits and plays back superbly.
Hide Waveforms at all times when you don't need them (both in Browser and Storyline / Timeline). They take up a lot of processor power.
Create folders in the Project and Events libraries and put any projects you are not working on currently, in those folders. This will help a lot.
Move your Projects and Events to an external HD (make sure it's formatted OS Extended - with journaled on or off) and run from there.
The biggest single improvement I saw in performance was when I upgraded the RAM from 8 GB to 16.

  • Aperture library lost after deleting preferences/repair?

    Hi:
I tried opening Aperture this morning and got an error message saying: "There was an error opening the database for  the library <library_name>."
I found this article from Apple support (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805) on the problem.  I wasn't able to use the "first aid" tools (even with Option/Cmd held down, Aperture refuses to open) so I deleted my user preferences.
I was able to reopen Aperture, but now EVERYTHING is gone.  I use referenced files (apparently, a good thing in this case) so I know that the original RAW or TIFF files are there.  I also verified this independently through Finder.
However, I'm not sure where all my projects are, or my keywords/tags on the photos.  My fear is that this is all stored in the Aperture database, and that it's all gone at this point.  Is that the case?
By the way - I tried a repair, and nothing happened.  I'm guessing the library file is "zeroed out" at this point (everything gone) and so a repair job didn't have anything to repair.
Bottom line - how screwed am I at this point?
    Jim

    Hi Frank:
I really appreciate all your help, especially since I know you're doing this out of the kindness of your heart...
    OK, answers:
    All referenced files, nothing managed.
There's a backup (I think) of library from last month, I may end up reverting back to that.
RE: how the drive is formatted - I was pretty sure I'd formatted it OS X extended with journaling, but Disk Utilities show it's a Win NT filesystem.
Tried copying the library to my internal HDD, it won't even copy over (the copy function just says "Preparing to copy to desktop" but never completes).
I'll try the rebuild but since I (apparently) can't get Aperture to 'skip over' the new catalog it creates (as opposed to pointing it to the old catalog), then I don't know how the rebuild will turn out.
Been using it for a while, and there's enough work in it that it'll be a PITA to recreate - especially if I've lost my tags and my non-destructive edits.  If those are all still there somehow, someway, in XML files or whatever, that's cool.  Fortunately my file structure on the HDD is "/PHOTOS/<year>/<month/<shoot date and name>", and the structure for my projects is (was?) the same.  So if all I have to do is recreate the projects, not a big deal.

  • Menu entry under 'Tools' for connecting Bridge with Photoshop gone after deleting preferences

Hi, after I had problems with Photoshop HDR-Pro dialog not coming up, I deleted the preferences of both Brodge and Photoshop. Now HDR-Pro is working again, but just from inside Photoshop, not from Bridge. I don't see the menu entries under Tools to batch pictures in Photoshop. The tick in Bridge -> prefs -> start scripts -> auto collection cs5 is set. Actually I de-selected and selected, deleted prefs 3 times, it's still set now, but the menu doesn't show.
The first time I deleted Bridge's prefs, the Illustrator menu was gone as well. After deleting the prefs again, de-selecting and selecting the Illustrator bits in the start scripts, it's showing again. Only Photoshop is still missing. I read this article
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3941856#3941856
but it didn't help - the start scripts are set correctly in Bridge's preferences, and I've deleted the prefs several times now.
    Can anyone help?
    The versions:
    Bridge 4.1.0.54
    Photoshop 12.1 x64
    Thanks in advance
    Dagmar

The first time I deleted Bridge's prefs, the Illustrator menu was gone as well. After deleting the prefs again, de-selecting and selecting the Illustrator bits in the start scripts, it's showing again. Only Photoshop is still missing. I read this article
Don't know what you mean with deleting prefs, did you use the option key to reset the preferences? or do you mean deleting the Bridge plist file from the user library preference folder.
And in PS the same, did you use the key commands for refreshing preferences?
I understand that you have CS5.5 and it did work before? Also do system maintenance with check and repair disk permissions, (use Apple Disk Utility for this).

  • InDesign 5 'quit unexpectedly' after deleting preferences & even reinstalling

InDesign 5, after restarting my computer this morning, keeps crashing immediately when I try to open the software.
I have no idea why because it worked fine before the restart.
I tried deleting (all of them indicating from the forums) preferences:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe InDesign CS5.5
    ~/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign
    ~/Library/Caches/com.adobe.InDesign
    ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.InDesign.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.InDesign.plist.lockfile
    ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.adobe.InDesign.savedState
Tried that before and after restarting, doesn't work.
I even tried uninstalling and installing.
Can anyone out there help me?!
My error report at starting up:
    http://pastebin.com/RbRJAb2K

just to confirm, do i do this through system preference and set one of the printers as default? do i also need to directly connect (with wire) the printer to the computer? i'm not quite sure how printers relate to this but i'll do whatever. thanks for your patience btw.
