Deleting referenced masters whose versions are already deleted

I imported a bunch of pictures in my macbook pro as referenced masters from my camera. As I went through the photos there were several pictures that I wanted to delete so I simply moved them to the Trash and later emptied thinking the photos are removed.
But when I had a look at the folder, all the masters were still there. Is there a way I can remove those masters from that folder.

when you empty the trash in Ap3 you should get a dialog asking you if you want to move referenced files to the system trash. If you check that checkbox they will then end up in your system trash. If you don't nothing will happen to them, they will stay where you are.
I cannot test right now but if you are not getting that dialog there maybe a way to tell it to go away forever (maybe from last some previous point where you emptied your trash) you may want to reset your warnings in preferences to get it back.

Hi Jen.  My daughter just compleated her nursing program and is now working as a full time nurse.  Focus and study hard and soon you will be there too.  Now to the problem at hand.  I have the same problem.  I gave up on it and satisfied myself with my iPod without the upgrade.  Reason being I've read so many posts of people having problems after the upgrade.  But I'm sure other factors are involved.  Nevertheless here is the fix most say works to solve the problem:  What ever virus protection you have installed on your computer, disable it.  Then try to install the update. After that enable the protection. I had Kaspersky, and it does it's job well. The thinking is, the virus protection is blocking the upgrade.  Hope this works.   Charlie

  • Aperture 3 not deleting referenced masters

I have upgraded to Aperture 3 and unfortunately it does not delete the (newly imported) referenced master file.
Aperture 2 always asked whether I also wanted to delete the master or not, when deleting a version. Aperture 3 has not asked me this question yet. Is this by design or is something not working?
When a version is selected in an album and I select "File>Delete master and all versions" the versions are deleted, but when I go to the folder where the reference masters are located the file is still there. The files are in a folder on my Mac book pro.
    Thanks for any thoughts/solutions

    Aperture 3 added a "Trash".
The deleted versions go into the trash, and you have to empty the trash to truly delete them. At this point it will ask if you want to delete the referenced masters as well.
As a pro, I'd rather not have a trash... But oh well, gotta appease the newbies.

  • Deleting Masters and Versions and pics duplicating as versions

I'm working with a small library of some flower images and had done a 'quick and dirty' auto adjustment and easy rating [4]; then I went back and on the Versions [selected Adjustments are Applied to have only the versions show up in browser] noted some are Rejects [X]. I thought I could then delete the two images, one master and one version.
But, when I go in to delete the Master it just does it = without a warning [I have show warning selected in prefs] - but when I go in to delete a =Version 2 it gives me the Delete Masters Warning....in other words, Aperture is treating Versions like Masters and Masters like Versions.
Also when I go into List view to check things I find Master is [for instance] 9.47mb but so is Version 2 the same size = in other words when I do an adjustment and create a Version it's not just creating small kb size versions via data but is actually duplicating and then applying the adjustment.
These are pics in the library not referenced.
[I'd put a picture here but don't know how and hope my description makes sense]

Thanks = I reread it and am thinking of the images in that way. As I tried to explain, In the library were images which I reviewed and made adjustments to [auto adjustment plus rating]. Then I did a filter to show only Versions [in which images that show are where adjustments were applied] so that only Versions would so up, marked some as Rejects with X and planned to delete those but not the masters for them.
When I would go to delete the Version [its name would have Version 2 in it], it was treated as if it was a Master and the Delete Masters warning would come up. But when I would go to delete a Master [not a version] no such warning would come up at all even if there were a version and master associated together.
I went to List view to check and be sure and what I am seeing is that the Master has 9.4 mb in size but the Version which was created by the auto adjustment + rating ends up also with 9.4mb and not just a few K for the data -- so that what appears to me to be happening is that the Master image is, in fact, being duplicated and not just having data changes applied = there is no size differential between the Master and the Version, in other words.

  • Receive error when trying to delete referenced masters

When I try to empty the Aperture Trash and move referenced masters to the system trash, I receive an error that reads, "You don’t have access to the System Trash on the master files’ volume"
The masters are stored on a photos share on my Windows Home Server. I have admin rights to everything. At least I thought I did.
I can manually delete the masters by going through Finder, but how do I fix this so I can delete referenced masters through Aperture?
    Many thanks!

Please check whether clearing the Contribute preferences helps you.
To Clear the preference, quit Contribute, and then delete the Contribute  CS5  folder in C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local   Settings\Application Data\Adobe\ and also run the following command "   reg delete "HKCU\Software\Adobe\Contribute 6 " /f " if you are using  Contribute CS5.  Reconnect to the site and try the same scenario.
Note that, if you clear the preferences then no  connection will be listed  in Contribute, you need to recreate the  connections. It will be like a  fresh installation.

  • AE: Deleting Initiators which are already tied to request

    Hi All
Is there a way of deleting initiators which are already tied to requests? We would like clear the system of all initiators if this is not possible is there a way around it! We would like to use attributes assigned to those initiators in new initiators.
    Any assistance will be appreciated!

    Hi there,
it is possible to delete initiators!
    - find the path the initiator you want to delete is tied to
    - edit the path and check the "detour" box and deactivate the "active" box
    - save the path without an initiator (detours don't need initiators)
    - now you can delete your initiator
What is not possible is to delete the path (only when deleting the requests with the mentioned script).
    Regards,
    Daniela

  • Aperture 3 - Deleting Referenced Masters in Finder

Here's my scenario: I've recently installed Aperture 3, and imported many iPhoto Libraries into it. I currently have just over 100K photos in a managed library, and performance is slow. I'm switching now to referenced masters to (hopefully) improve performance. I suspect that I have several thousand duplicate photos (could be as high as 10K duplicates because my wife has mangled the iPhoto libraries over the years).
Once I've finished converting from managed masters to referenced masters, my plan was to run a duplicate checking app to delete all the dupes using the finder. The question is - if I delete a referenced master in the finder, will that screw up my Aperture library?
I did attempt to use Duplicate Annihilator on Aperture itself, but because my library is huge it would take about a week to complete, and I can never go seven days without rebooting (I travel a lot). I think because I have so many photos, I need to delete dupes in the finder.
Any advice would be appreciated . . .
    - Nick -

The one drawback to doing it outside of Aperture is that you will be left with a bunch of missing files.
You could setup a filter with *File Status* missing and then if you're sure there isn't anything in the result that is truly missing just delete them Aperture.
Haven't done this myself so can't say for certain it won;t cause problems but I don;t see why it should.

  • Deleting masters and versions in Aperture

After the dialog box, you should be pressing the <Enter> or <Return> key to confirm, not the <Delete> key.

  • Importing old pictures with wrong date stamp. After adjusting date they are landing in the correct folder of referenced masters.

I was thrilled to learn that with Aperture I could have one big library and using referenced masters, I can organize the pictures by date so I know where everything is and can backup to the cloud.  I started importing really old photos that were taken with god knows what camera and the date is wrong.  Since I had all these in date structured folders I could make a best guess on the date - not needing it to be exact, just so it shows up close enough in projects and the original lands in the right folder for future use & backup. I have come to learn that changing the metadata is only referring to how Aperture sees it.  In other words, images that were taken on 10/31/04 are still landing in the referenced masters folder on the date the camera said.  I now understand that the metadata date is not the date Aperture needs fixed.  Is the best way to fix this to delete the images from Aperture, find some tool that will adjust to the approximate real date, then reimport.  If so, can someone recommend a utility that does this? If I can fix this inside of Aperture, even better.  I saw on one of the discussions: "it's all about the Exif and IPTC and not about the file metatata."  Please feel free to learn me on that.  Cheers.

That answers some of it - the relocate files.  That will allow me to put the files in the right year/month folder.  I imported full folders into Aperture so need to edit the metadata date for multiple pictures at the same time.  I understand when you select multiple pictures and then ajust time, it adjusts in relation to the first picture.  In my case these things were taken by all sorts of crappy cameras & re-edited years later (2003 data).  So pictures taken on the same day have 2001, 2003 & 2007 dates. I really do just wnt to set all of them to the same (ballpark) date.
    So my goals are:
    1) have the pictures land in the right referenced folder - answered
    2) do a mass adjust time to the same date for a folder of images
    3) have the projects then land chronologically inside Aperture - not sure about this one yet
Thanks for your help, it's very much appreciated.

  • How do I download new versions of tracks that are already in my Library?

I downloaded about a hundred songs from iTunes between last night and this morning. A number of the tracks do not play to the end of the file, cutting off in the middle instead of playing to the end. I tried making an .mp3 copy of several of them, and they all generate a file error in iTunes. Obviously the tracks that I downloaded are corrupted in some way, so they need to be re-downloaded. The problem is that iTunes says they are already downloaded, so it won't let me re-download a new (hopefully clear) copy. Is there any way I can do this without having to pay for the tracks all over again?

What country are you in ? What you can re-download, and where, is listed on this page.
If you are in one of those countries where you can re-download music then delete the entry for them in iTunes (you don't have to delete the actual files, just the 'entries' for them in iTunes) and see if you can then re-download them - I think that if there is an entry for them in iTunes then it doesn't think that they need re-downloading as they are already there. If you are not in a country where you can re-download music for free then you can try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1933

  • Freeing up laptop HD - referenced masters

I'm working with a large project of my India trip as a I travel. I have it sub-divided into albums based on different places I've visited as I visit them (chronologically).
I'm working on my laptop so space is limited and I now want to delete some of the initial referenced masters and externally edited versions. Is relocate masters the correct way to do this? And what about relocating externally edited versions? As I'm on a slow system, I still use PS for editing.
I backup my entire system to two external FW drives using CCC. So I already have 'relocated masters' on external storage. So all I really want to do is delete the masters/externally edited files on my laptop but I don't want to cause a break in Aperture's links. Is there a way to take advantage of these external drive files in the whole relocating/reconnecting process? Or do I need to relocate separately?
One possible solution I can think of: Would moving the referenced masters and externally edited images to the trash and then use Manage Referenced Files to point the broken links to the equivalent images in one of my external drives be sensible? And what about the other backup drive? If the external drive whose images the aplibrary now links to failed, could I then use Manage Referenced Files to restore the path to the other backups on my second external drive?
    Thanks for any help,
    Ross

I think you're saying you've got the images both on your internal drive as managed and on external storage. You want to delete the managed images on your internal drive, and use the images on the external drives. If I have that right, and assuming you've made all the adjustments to the images that are managed, and wish to keep those adjustments, then your best bet is to actually delete the images on the external drive then relocate your masters from your library to the external drive. That way you'll get them off your internal HD, keep all your current adjustments, and eliminate duplicates.
As I reread your post I'm not positive I understand what you're trying to do. You can delete referenced images from within Aperture and check the box to delete the masters. This will move your images no matter where they are to the trash. If you've then got them someplace else, edited with PS, you can import those.

  • Aperture thinks a project has offline referenced masters - but it doesn't!

I've just been consolidating two Aperture libraries by exporting projects from one library and importing them into another. For the most part this has gone smoothly, but in one project all the images have the little badge with the red slash through it, to indicate that the referenced masters are offline.
But they're not! The project itself is 2.2 GB - so all the photos are actually in it - and when I click 'consolidate masters' for that project, Aperture tells me there are no referenced masters for this project. For every image that's missing a master (if that makes sense) there's a version that's NOT missing a master. So the data's there and I can work with the image - I'm just a bit worried about making radical moves without knowing exactly what's going on
I've tried deleting the project and reimporting it, but to no avail - also, when I delete the project, it tells me referenced masters are offline and can't be moved to the trash.
