Deleting & renaming files - is there a shortcut to finder?

I am a recent convert from PC to Mac. So far so good. However, one thing starts to drive me up the wall which is deleting/renaming files in programs such as photoshop, word, excel etc.etc.
As far as I can tell, this is only possible in the finder menu. Is this Correct? I am using a lot of folders and subfolders - sometimes 3-4 levels deep. Every time I need to change/delete a file or filename - lets say while in photoshop, I have to go to finder and click my way through several levels of folders to the actual file I need to change. This is somewhat annoying and timeconsuming.
Question 1: is there a way to do these operations in - lets say photoshop directly?
Question 2: If not, is there a shortcut key that would point me automatically to the file in finder where I can make the changes?
Your input would be very helpful and save me some aggravation.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for your input. You are correct as far as "save" and "save as" is concerned. Windows and Mac work the same way.
However, as far as I can tell, in Mac you can only "delete" or "rename" a file in "finder" which forces you to open up finder and locate the file in order to delete or change it.
In windows you can do these 2 functions directly in the program (such as photoshop, excel or words). You do not have to go to "explorer or root directory" to make these changes which I believe would be the equivalent of "finder".
In any case, Terence solved the problem. By command clicking the name (title) of the file in any program, it opens up the directory in "finder". This way makes it easy to select the file and do the changes.

  • Can't delete, rename files, or move to another folder

I had posted earlier about not being able to delete, rename files, or move to another folder. It never was resolved here, and I guess Apple still hasn't done anything about it. Here's a great workaround I found though in case others need something. Download the program called "Unlocker", it's free and you can get it at http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ When you get the message about the file being in use, even though QuickTime isn't even open, you can unlock the f'ing file and do whatever you want to then, move, uh DELETE, or rename, or whatever. Try it, it's the best thing going so far seeing Apple isn't doing anything about this problem.

    Hi there,
I am still struggling with this problem. Actually my coworker has the same machine, Apple pro with windows xp installed, but he does not have this problem with his quicktime 7.5. I uninstalled 7.5 and installed 7.2, but it did not solve the problem. The fact is that I don't have the problem in my laptop which I am using it in the office. I am still trouble shooting. Hopefully I can find an answer.
    Peace

  • Will reinstalling OS X Mavericks delete my files if there are no backup?

My iMac will not start up. It just powers on, then apple logo shows up with a loading bar underneath it and then powers down. I tried performing a disk repair, but it says that it could not be repaired, and to backup the data. Apple has told me to reinstall the software, but I am worried that it will delete my files if I do. Thank you!

  • Mistakenly deleted 3 files from iTunes, how can i find out which?

My iTunes library is manually managed.
I accidently deleted 3 files in my iTunes library: my iTunes library has 8921 songs. My music folder in the finder has 8924. So I basically 3 files on my finder are not in iTunes.
I don't want to empty my iTunes library and repopulate it with my music folder, because that would remove all my ratings, and disturb the real date added thing.
    Thanks for any suggestions
    Nick

Why not simply use the "Add to library" line in the file menu and target your music folder? Should just add back the 3 songs without changing anything else.

  • ITunes not deleting renamed files?

Have other experiences this in iTunes...
I'm pretty manic about tagging my files, so whenever I get files from friends and whatnot that aren't tagged properly, I agonize and do so in excrutiating detail. All that's fine.
But now that I go into several actual folders, iTunes hasn't gotten rid of all the older named files. All the newly retagged files are in their properly named folders, but some of the old ones are still in folders with old album names. There's also an abundance of files like "song title" followed by "song title 1". What's with all these duplicates? Anyone else seeing this annoying breakdown in iTunes command of the file system?
    Thanks in advance!

Similar things happen to me all the time. I have not encountered your exact problem, but a host of things like it. Maybe someone can explain exactly how iTunes "sees" audio files. For example how does it determine the order of songs in an album? I notice the file names start with 01, 02, 03, etc which do not show up in the itunes screen. But when I try to inject these numbers in the original filename to change the order of songs it does not work.
The one thing I do know is that when you remove a song from iTunes the original file is still there - it just is not recognized in your song list. You have to delete it with a separate action.

  • I saved a profile to my desktop then deleted it and it deleted other files which I can no longer find

I created a profile and saved it to the desktop. (I have read since then not to do this but it's too late). I then deleted the profile and all the files. When I did this it deleted everything I had saved on my desktop. I have searched the hard drive for the files and they are nowhere to be found. Is there anyway to recover them?

You will have to use an undelete utility like Recuva to get those files back.
    *Recuva: http://www.piriform.com/recuva
You should never specify an existing folder for a new profile unless that folder is an existing profile.
If you remove the files in the profile when you delete that profile via the Profile Manager then all files will be removed as you've found out.

  • Trash: Deletes more files then are listed in Trash Finder window

I am trying to clean up my HD.  I have deleted a bunch of files which show up in the Trash finder window (27 items).  When I attempt to securely delete them the Trash window shows over a 1000 items to delete.  How is this possible?  Are there hidden files?  How can I view them to make sure I am not deleting something I didn't put in the trash?
    Thanks

This is quite common, and it's a similar issue to every other Finder window, so you shouldn't be too surprised.
Your '27' count is just looking at the number of items (icons) in the Trash window. It's not taking into account embedded files. These most commonly occur with application files which are really bundles of files containing the program code as well as other resources such as icons, images, menus, internationalization resources, etc. It's not uncommon for one .app 'file' to actually consist of hundreds of elements - it's kind of like the same thing as one 'folder' icon containing hundreds of files (and sub-folders) within it.
The Finder (and most human eyes) would simply count to the top-level items, but when you actually empty the trash the OS looks at all those embedded files to determine the true count of items to be deleted.
As for whether you're deleting anything by mistake, just look at those items. If any of them are applications that likely accounts for the count discrepancy. If they're folders, just look in them to see what else will be deleted. In either case you've always got your Time Machine backup to restore from, right?

  • Renaming file information in Itunes and in finder

    Hello,
I've renamed all songs in my ipod, but the song names in my computer (I saved a copy in finder) remain the same, is there a way to change both of them? Or I would have to save a copy of all my songs in the itunes library, rename all songs, then drag a copy to my computer?
If I happen to lose everything in my ipod, I don't want to rename all songs in my computer and drag them to my ipod again. Please advice, thank you.

Sometimes I think ppl post stuff just to here there self talk. Like you old man. For one you can change the "original file" name as long as you don't change the file type. But to all who or out there trying to rename thousands of music names here's how you do it fast if you don't might spending a little cash. "TuneUp" is about $40 or $50 but the time it will save is crazy. Just for example. I had around 2500 songs with no names or album covers. I just got "TuneUp" and already finshed with all of them. Now the only thing I complain about is that it changes the song in Itunes and not the original file. So I will ask if there is a program or quick way to change the "Itunes Name" of the song in itunes for the orginal file. That way when I come to Back up my hard drive you can know the songs you have on there. Other wise I will be looking at numbers or other names that is not the name of the song.

  • Help, I renamed files in Picasa and LR cant find them

I hope someone can help me here - I still use Picasa and LR3 (new to LR3, havent made the full switch as I'm still trying to get a grip on the LR3 learning curve)
What I did was change the folder names in Picasa (and found out I cannot undo folder name changes). I can locate the files in LR3 by keyword, but dont know how to reassosiate the files to their new folder.
Whats the the best way for LR3 to find these files again? I dont want to have to delete and reload the images, but will if its easier
    thanks in advance

    @Rob Cole - why is LR4 better?
    In a nutshell: better quality.
On some photos, the difference may be negligible, on other photos: not negligible, no not negligible at all..
IMO, PV2012 is trickier to master than PV2010, but well worth the effort...
Warning: it's possible for one to have a psychological attachment to the characteristic results of PV2010, and until learning PV2012, you may prefer PV2010 renditions in some ways. After getting used to PV2012 though I think most people agree the results are most often superior. As example, some people who used extreme Lr3 fill for effect have noticed the same effect is not achievable in PV2012 - PV2012's result is generally more accurate, losing some of the "effect" that is possible via Lr3 fill.
Along with better quality, there is much more flexibility in toning via the basics. You can increase or decrease brightness of and intra-region contrast in shadows, midtones, & highlights, independently, and fine tune the end-points, without ever touching the tone curve.
Also, PV2012 can recover image detail from the highlights and shadows that would just be lost in PV2010, and better handling of clipping at the endpoints usually.
It really rocks once you get the hang of it - enjoy!
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • How do you find duplicates in the same album? I keep creating albums and it's frustrating because I keep having to go back and personally scan for any duplicates. Isn't there a shortcut to finding these?

I'm knew to the iMac, although I've been using my Macbook Pro 2011 for some time and I love it. I've had an iPad and used the iPhone 5 and love the streamlined way you can share pics etc. between all devices. However, I've never used the iPhoto program until now. I am trying to organize my photos into albums and it is frustrating because I select photos from the main "Photos" on the Left Sidebar and because I have so many photos I tend to put duplicates into my albums. Then I have to spend hours searching to make sure there are no duplicates before I upload them to my website. This is tedious and time consuming. Surely there is an easier way to find all the duplicates IN THE ALBUMS I CREATE. I've looked everywhere and I can't find a sorting tool to put all the duplicates side by side so I can delete the proper ones.

If they are duplicates then sorting on title will put them together, no? If you have two photos called IMG_1234.jpg or 'Last Xmas 01', then they'll have the same name.

  • Tried to delete an FM book, but won't delete; however files are missing

I'm using RH7 in TCS1 in Windows Explorer.
I imported FM book files by reference into my project. I had forgotten to check abook file prior to import and didn't notice that the book file did not have the necessary graphics.  So I fixed the file, then tried to update the book file in RH7.  The graphics did not import into RH, so I thought I would start over from scratch and delete the book file in RH.  It will not delete and causes RH to crash.  The delete option is available, but it doesn't delete them.
So I went into Windows Explorer and deleted the files from there.  Then I get a message that says files are missing, and that I need to delete them from Project Manager which is what I was trying to do in the first place.
Can someone please help me delete these files?

Just an update to this posting.  I did not have the latest RoboHelp patches installed.  For some reason, RH wouldn't let me install
them.  So I had to have a complete uninstall of RH, then reinstall it.  Once I did
that I installed all of the patches and my book files were deleted.

Download OmniDiskSweeper from the Internet (free) and open it.  It will produce a display i a sequential format showing what you have on your MBP and the space each item is taking.  This should assist you in identifying all of your disk space 'hogs'.

  • ITunes won't delete music files from default external hard drive . . . what to do?!

I really don't want to manually delete 6 GB of stuff that's not in my library but still in the music folder. Yes . . . the external hard drive is listed as the default music location. THANK YOU!

Hmm, perhaps it wasn't when you deleted the files, or there is a permissions issue. Test by adding back a known redundant file, then deleting from iTunes. Does it get deleted from the hard drive? If so, great add back the entire media folder, then delete everything added today. If not...
Right-click on your main media folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and system full control to this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.
    Now try again...
I also have a script called KillSelectedFiles which is useful when the source files are located outside of the designated iTunes Media folder but In your case it shouldn't be necessary.
