Deleting Solaris 8

Good day all!
I have just bought an old Sparc Ultra1 and it has Solaris 8 installed on it. Of course, everything is password protected. What I want to do is to install Linux on my Sparc but I can't get rid of my Solaris partition.
I have to tell you that Solaris, Linux, Sun, Sparc are brand new topics for me, I bought this Sparc so I could learn. Which way is the easiest way to completely wipe a hard disk on a Sparc? Please, keep in mind that I don't have ANY Solaris CDs or Floppy disks, so is there any third party software that will run on a Sparc and let me wipe a drive?
Thanks for your help!
Jeff

As part of the Linux install, you should be able to partition the disk anyway you like. Once you remove the partitions that held Solaris you have removed Solaris. There is no "uninstall" needed. The Linux partitioning software recognizes Sun disk partitions and allows you to manipulate them (ie delete them) just as you would MS-DOS FAT partitions (as well as a host of others). Good luck with the install.

  • Solaris + Windows 7 .. delete Solaris Partition .. how do i boot from GRUB?

i had Solaris and W7 partitions -- together summing to the entire disk size -- but i needed to expand W7 partition. i was not able to resize the ZFS so i deleted it; i can now only boot as far as GRUB "BASH-like commands" window [GRUB> prompt], which rejects everything i enter.
the ultimate goal is to expand the W7 partition and effect another Solaris install (and possibly another primary partition -- Linux?)
    how can i recover?

You saved my obtuse butt again
... THANK YOU AGAIN ALAN !!
i was contemplating this strategy of the W7 install dvd repair mechanism, but i refrained because of the imagined risk of destroying my W7 install -- i was not going to attempt it unless someone knowledgeable confirmed it.
the W7 repair took ~ 25 minutes -- it installed a recovery partition.
my original idea was to uninstall GRUB, but i was anxious about that solution too.

    hi everyone
here is how I fixed my dual boot & internet connectivity failure problems. I'm explaining in detail to help any Solaris newbie (like me) having same problems: ( as I didn't find any REAL Help thru Sun Help Documents / Pages )
My special thanx to " Phil Brown " ( who helped me alott on this )
First to get rid of Dell's Diagnostic Partition & System Recovery Partition I re-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition & at installation I made 4 Partitions of my Dell 9150 ( x86 Intel Pentium Dual Core ) 238 GB Hard Drive.
    (1) C: 100 GB for Windows XP ( NTFS )
    (2) D: 80 GB for Solaris 10 ( RAW )
    (3) E: 50 GB for Linux ( RAW , which I haven't installed yet )
    (4) F: 6 GB (RAW)
    (5) G: 2 GB Un-Allocated Space
Restarted PC after Win XP installation & installed Partition Magic 8 . In PM8 I formatted Solaris partition as FAT 32 (at Solaris installation it changed to Solaris format) & Linux as Linux EXT 3 . Rebooted the PC. I Started Solaris 10 11/06 installation from the DVD I burned from Sun downloads.
    Here's how I installed Solaris 10 11/06 :
    (1) On the next screen after "Loading Stage 2 ... " I selected " Solaris "
    (2) Selected " Solaris Interactive (default) installation
    (3) Hit "enter" to accept proposed Windows configuration screen it displayed

    (39) At sign-in screen, I signed in as, user name: " root " & enterd password (which I typed at installation)
    (40) I choose JAVA Desktop System
When it was fully up, the Internet was working right away. Restarted again to check Windows. Selected " Windows " at reboot screen & Windows was working just fine.
It took me few allnighters to figure these out, I hope these will helpful to Solaris newbies like me. Still I can't figure out ... How to install any software (obviously designed for Solaris 10 (x86) ) onto Solaris, but thats a different issue.

"A Linux fdisk partition was found on this disk (c1d0), which is the default bootdisk. Having a Linux fdisk partition is not supported"
It might not be supported, but it works fine for me on my thinkpad :-) .
    redhat/solaris/xp.
You can't just use the linux grub, though, because it won't understand
solaris 'slices within partitions'. You need to get Solaris to install
grub itself (in fact, you can't stop it doing so, which is rather unfair),
and then add in the linux * xp entries to Solaris's /boot/grub/menu.lst
(== grub.conf) to get it to pick up fedora & xp. Chainloading xp worked
fine for me. Chainloading RHEL4/5 doesn't, so I had to cat the grub.conf
from red hat on to the end of solaris's menu.lst. Stick red hat's grub.conf
on a USB pen or just write it down before putting Solaris on, otherwise you'll
have to boot linux rescue of a red hat CD in order to get hold of it after
    Solaris's grub takes over.

  • Solaris 10 with Windows 2000 HELP!

    Hi,
I'm having a terrible time with Solaris 10 installation and configuration.
I installed W2k on a NTFS partition. I shrinked the partiton with Partition Magic so I have enough place for Solaris.
I installed Solaris using the rest of the disk space and completed sucessfully.
The system then asked me where I want to boot and I said W2K. Once I went to W2K I found that my DVD-Rom wasn't recognized. Also, I couldn't run Partition Magic as it was giving me a message about partition table is corupt.
Then on the next boot I could not for the life of me get into Solaris. There was no choice anymore.
Can someone please help me with this issue? I'm trying like crazy for weeks now and all I need is some kind of step-by-step help if possible.
    Thanks in advance,
    Chaim Bochner

Resizing a Windows partition assumes that this partition has to be defragmented before. Furhter in nearly every cases I know Windows has always to be installed at first operating system. It is a good advice when the amount of primary partitons on one HD are not more then four at all, specially when Windows is on it. This number is quickly reached because Solaris needs as I know three primary partitions for itselfs. Installing further operating systems after Windows, Windows losts its attribut as master partition. That means Windows might be not recognized any more. The problems increase by resizing partitions. Unfortunately Soraris does not support realy the usage with several operating systems on one HD and its tools on board are very purely.
There are two strategies to solve the problem: First I would delete Solaris from the HD so Windows is the first Operatin System and starts well, again. Then size the Windows partion after defragmenting as you want. Afterwards make a boot disk from Windows. Then I would install Solaris, but the Grub Loader I would install on a floppy disk and not on the HD to avoid Solaris from writing in the master boot record. Finally you need a boot loader that starts from a floppy disk. Such boot loaders can be found at Internet or from Linux.
My second strategy is, depends on the size of the HD, to install a very small Linux patition at the last operating system. The Linux boot loader LILO can manage several operating systems on the one HD very well.
My advice to Sun: Look what competitors operating systems can do nowadays and learn now. Talk to your customers what they need. Dont wait for the next 30 years.
    I wish much success.
    Kind regards from Berlin, Germany

  • Install 11g on solaris 11 11/11

Can someone give me some idea on how to install oracle database 11g on solaris 11 11/11?
I checked the oracle manual, but it seems to me solaris 11 11/11 only supports 11g 2.0.3.0, which is only available on oracle support? If I only have access to free source like 11g 2.0.2.0, is it possible for me to install the database 11g on solaris 11 11/11?
    Thanks!

Unfortunately, I had installed only solaris 11 11/11 on my laptop. Does that mean I have to install a solaris 10 and get rid of 11 in order to install database 11g?
If I have to use solaris 10 instead of solaris 11. It goes back to my original question: with my windows 7 and solaris 11 11/11, I couldn't delete solaris 11 and install 10. Because I intend to do it with a USB drive. I post my question here:
how to install solaris 10 8/11 with USB?
    Many thanks!

  • Booting from usb disk

    hello
I'm new in solaris and I need help very much.
I installed Solaris 10 for x86 on external 3.5'' usb HD but on boot it hangs and a perpetual black screen appears.I've read about usb legacy and I disabled it but now BIOS doesn't see usb disk.
I tried to install grub on a floppy disk; however if legacy is disabled grub start but disk partition is not found(obviously); if I enable legacy disk is seen but i get error "Selected item cannot fit in memory".
I searched Sun site and the net for other infos but nothing;it seems no people had my same problem.
My PC has an athlon64 3200(I've alo updated BIOS) 1 GB ram and a Maxtor SATA HD with WinXP.
ps: Initially I wanted installing on sata HD but solaris doesn't see it and I didn't find sata drivers for it.
    PLEASE help me.

    Thanks for your effort!!
I deleted solaris and I'll continue to use Debian

    Hello,
In Solaris 10, Cluster 3.2, two node:local zone cluster.
The SAN disks do not auto-failover when I do a switch on the resource group. Instead, to fail over, I must:
    - clrg online fails
    - manually mount the SAN disks to the node
    - clrg online success
To fail over to other node, must
    - clrg switch [2nd node] fails with messages:

  • Strange delete behavior in Solaris 10 with NFS mounts

We are using the apache commons-io framework to delete a directory in a Solaris 10 environment. The code works well on our dev and qa boxes, but when we load it into our production envrionment we get intermittent failures where the files in a directory are not being deleted and therefore when we try to delete the directory it fails to delete.
We suspect that this may be some kind of NFS problem in Solaris where it may take longer to delete a file than if it is on a local drive and therefore the code reaches the deletedir before the OS actually removes the files and this cause the delete directory failure because files are still present.
Has anyone seen this in an NFS environment with Solaris? We are on Java 1.4.2_15 and we are using apache commons-io 1.3.1.

The apache commons-io framework contains a method to delete a directory by recursively deleting all files and subdirectories. Intermittently, we are seeing some of the files in a subdirectory remain and then when delete is called to remove the directory (from within the commons-io framework deletedir method) we get an IOException. This only occurs on an NFS mounted file system on our production system. Our dev and qa systems are also on an NFS but it is a different one and appears to be loaded differently and the behavior for dev and qa consistently works as expected.
It appears to be some kind of latency issue related to the way java deletes files on the NFS, but no conclusive evidence so far.
We have not tried this with a newer version of java since we are presently constrained to 1.4 :-(

  • AUDIT action (create, delete, privilege escalation, set and change password from users account and group) users and admins in Solaris 10

    Hello.
in Solaris 10 i need auditing process create, delete, privilege escalation, set and change password and etc... from users account and group.
    I set settings:
    in file syslog.conf:
    *.info;mail.none;cron.none;audit.notice            @IP-Remote-syslog-server-SIEM
    in file   /etc/security/audit_control:
    dir:/var/audit
    flags:lo,ad,ex,cc,am,no,fc,fd
    minfree:20
    naflags:lo
    plugin:name=audit_syslog.so;p_flags=lo,ad,ex,cc,am,no
    in file   /etc/security/audit_user:
    root:lo,ad:no
Now I see in the logs only the fact of a connection via SSH and run processes on behalf of users. Creation. delete users, change passwords for some reason do not is logged.
Many users. For each individual write permissions in the file /etc/security/audit_user not possible, it is likely to forget any new user (or there is a possibility in this file one line to describe the audits for all accounts?)
    Where is the mistake?

You are most likely hitting Bug 15779000 user/role/groupadd/mod/del don't audit their use.
And the fix is only available in S11.2.

Does anyone know if/how I can remove old, obsoleted patch versions to free up some space? Is it recommended to use patchrm -f to remove old patch versions? I am hoping that I can avoid re-installing Solaris 10 and, in doing so, make my / partition larger.
Also, I have noticed that Sun Update Manager (SUM) cannot install all available patches. Some patches are evidently signed, and will not install. The only way I have been able to install them is to separately download the unsigned version of the patch and use patchadd -Gd. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong, or can I somehow reconfigure SUM to change this behavior?

Command patchrm will remove patch and restore old version of patched files. Saved files are stored in /var/sadm/pkg/"PKG_NAME"/save/"PATCH_NO". You can remove these files, but you will not able to restore these files with patchrm. I found this example somewhere in the internet. It removes all saved patches older then 365 days.
    Example:
    find /var/sadm/pkg/*/save/??????-?? -type d -mtime +365 -prune | xargs rm -r
I use smpatch (simple "smpatch update" command) utility, but i think it is probably same as SUM. smpatch downloads patches to /var/sadm/spool. When patches are successfully installed then they are deleted from this directory otherwise they remain there. They are downloaded as jar archives /var/sadm/spool/??????-??.jar and then unpacked into var/sadm/spool/??????-??.jar.dir. When you delete these files/directories, smpatch will just have to download them again when it is necessary. Log files can be found in /var/sadm/patch/??????-??.
I have only problems with patches for Sun Studio. I must patchadd -G them manually from /var/sadm/spool. Sometime smpatch wants to install absurd patches but then installing simply failed.
I must say, that if you delete files, you do it at your own risk!!!

  • Deleting the flashback recovery area and the files (Oracle 10g on Solaris 8

    Hi,
We have a dev. db which is small about 3 gb in all (crd files). for this I had enabled flashback and also put it in archivelog mode. then the db_recovery_file_dest_size grew to 3 gb. since space is an issue, I turned off the flashback feature. (by the command: ALTER DATABASE FLASHBACK OFF;)
Tomorrow I will also make it into noarchivelog mode. My question is: it is having lots of archived logs (may be 3 gb or more) in the flashback recovey area. What is the correct syntax to delete them? There is a warning in alert log which says that use RMAN delete command but I am not aware of exact syntax.
    Thanks
    Nirav

You can use variations of delete. (As you say there are many files, incude noprompt)
Once the database goes into noarchivelog mode, the archived redo logs are essentially worthless. They would be useful/necessary if you wanted to restore the database to a point in time prior to going noarchive, but if you don't need that, the two ways you are looking at deleting (depending how you go about it) are at the OS level and within the database (what Oracle knows or remembers about the archived redo logs and where they were sent to via the arch process). The RMAN approach is cleaner, assuming you were using that.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/maint009.htm#sthref776
Delete unnecessary files from the flash recovery area using the RMAN DELETE command. (Note that if you use host operating system commands to delete files, then the database will not be aware of the resulting free space. You can run the RMAN CROSSCHECK command to have RMAN re-check the contents of the flash recovery area and identify expired files, and then use the DELETE EXPIRED command to remove missing files from the RMAN repository.)

  • Installation problem on Solaris 10

    Dear All,
We are trying to install j2sdk 1.4.2_13 on solaris server zone. I have downloaded j2sdk-1_4_2_13-nb-5_0-solsparc-ml.bin
But when I try to execute this:
    #./j2sdk-1_4_2_13-nb-5_0-solsparc-ml.bin
It gives me error: The installer is unable to run in graphical mode. Try running the installer with the -console or -silent flag
    Tried with -console:
The wizard cannot continue because of the following error: Invalid command line option: console is not supported (10
    01) (403)
WARNING: could not delete temporary file /tmp/ismp001/2599368
WARNING: could not delete temporary file /tmp/ismp001/6183226
WARNING: could not delete temporary file /tmp/ismp001/1222839
    Then tried with -silent:
This time command just completed w/o any output at all.
Please suggest what can I do?
    regards, Sean.

    Dear Siddhesh,
    Thanks for your reply.
I tried using X Manager GUI for my Solaris. But when I double click the j2sdk-1_4_2_13-nb-5_0-solsparc-ml.bin file to run it, it simply denies saying:
The filename "j2sdk-1_4_2_13-nb-5_0-solsparc-ml.bin" indicates that this file is of type "Unknown type". The contents of the file indicate that the file is of type "Shell script". If you open this file, the file might present a security risk to your system.
Do not open the file unless you created the file yourself, or received the file from a trusted source. To open the file, rename the file to the correct extension for "Shell script", then open the file normally. Alternatively, use the Open With menu to choose a specific application for the file.
    Also /tmp has full authorizations:
    drwxrwxrwt   7 root     sys          557 Jun 24 08:34 tmp
I dont have Hummingbird for X11 forwarding with this client. Do I have any other option??
    regards, Sean.

  • New to Solaris, Some Samba and NTFS issues.

Hi Im new to solaris and trying out ZFS which has been great.
Im haivng some trouble that I cant find up to date info on so here goes:
First how do you mount an NTFS volume in Solaris 11 Express?
I need to access the data on an NTFS drive to populate my new ZFS tank.
Secondly, I have read only access on my samba shares from windows machines but my smb.conf looks right. a copy of my smb.conf will follow
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
    # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
    # For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,
    # read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:
    # Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the
    # Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
    # to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.
