Deleting specific files

There are some files in finder that I try to send to the trash that require a password. When I type in my administrator password it still doesn't send the file to the TC.

These may be files that are constantly being written to by the operating system.
I would not delete any file that requires authentication, unless you yourself created it. If it is a file you suspect being damaged or unnecessary, ask here first how to delete it.

  • Cannot delete specific files.

    I am unable to delete certain files, but I can delete others. Finder says "The operation cannot be completed because the item...is in use." I have tried:
    *Alt+Empty Trash
    *Secure delete
    *Empty trash from the Terminal
    *Repair permissions
    *Verify disk
    *Various utilities (Trash it!, OnyX, etc.)
    *Restart
    *Closed all applications
    I have noticed that if I try to delete from the Terminal it says "rm: /Users/mymacrules/.Trash/Cannot Delete/nl.lproj: Directory not empty". I also tried to move one file that would not delete from the trash, this file disappears when I click on it, but is there after restart. As long as that specific file is on the desktop it also makes another folder disappear. Even though I can't see it in Finder I can see it with the "ls" command. Any ideas?

    Right. The rm command by default will not delete nonempty directories. To force it to, use the recursive flag:
    rm -r /Users/mymacrules/.Trash/Cannot Delete/nl.lproj
    But keep in mind that I'm just a Unix person...people like Joshz who know MacOS better than me may know good reasons to not use the Terminal to try to empty the trash.

  • Deleting specific files in backup

    As a matter of course, when a project is finished I delete the files from my hard disk and also enter time machine and delete the files from the backup by highlighting the file and then pressing the widget button which gives me a window and I instruct it to delete all backups of this file, then enter my passowrd in another window and the backup is gone.  Now, for some reason when I press the widget button the window which appears does not give me the option to delete all backups of the file.  Any thoughts?

  • I deleted a specific file folder from my Seagate backup drive, via Time Machine. Instead of only deleting that file, it deleted ALL my files for that date.

    1. Why? I was quite obviously selecting one file folder ONLY.
    2. Is there any way to retrieve the lost items?
    3. How do I avoid this happening in the future?

    Never had any issues while deleting specific files/folders from a time machine backup.
    However, regarding the original post, what do you mean by "file folder"? Did you select a FILE for deletion, or a FOLDER? These two terms tend to be quite different, you know.
    If you selected a FOLDER, then ALL FILES inside the folder have been deleted. If you selected a single FILE, then only that file should have been deleted. "Delete all backups of..." is a completely different story.

  • Deleting all files in a directory

    Hi,
    Is it possible to use cffile to delete all files in a
    directory. I have a function that creates a file in seperate parts
    and places the finished file into a folder. But I need a check to
    delete all files currently existing in said folder. I understand it
    is possible to query a folder for existing files and then use that
    query with cffile to delete the files... I just don't know how to
    do it.
    Thanks for your help

    I am not postivie, but I think I recall learning that the
    delete all function is prohibited via CF. You can delete specific
    files, though.
    If this is, in fact, the case, you could query the directory,
    and then loop through the resultant query, deleting each file one
    at a time.

  • The latest issue of Pages for iPad: 1. Very slow. 2. Late in reacting to typing. 3. When I go to a specific file, informs me that some images were deleted and therefore file has been changed. Then when OPEN option used, opens file slowly. Please, help!

    What I have to do to correct the following problems with Pages app. For iPad:
    Hesitates to display results of typing, some times for 5-6 characters;
    Very slow in opening files;
    Before opening of a specific file displays message: DOCUMENT DETAILS. SOME CHANGES WERE MADE TO YOUR DOCUMENT. SOME IMAGES ARE MISSING BECAUSE THEY WERE DELETED FROM YOUR DOCUMENT. We'll, nothing is missing. But it takes forever to open this file. The previous issue of Pages worked very good. But they would not let me to go back to it. Please, help!

    Tmobile did the exact same thing to me. So that is customer service at work in general. Nice try though lol.
    To the OP
    I see you said You paid for shipping, did you Insure it? Claim insurance on it. If you did not, It may not be Verizon or your fault in the sense of the phone not making it to the warehouse. There are people out in the postal world that will steal phones that are not insured. It could have been a Verizon employee, i suppose.
    But, if this was to be a bought in court, if you shipped it with out insurance, sadly your at fault.
    Do you still have the Serial number of your old phone? If so, you should be able to track where your phone is (if it is reported as a defect/damaged) If so, you may be able to use that as proof. If it does not show up as a defect or what ever they determine use as a loss, then you know it did not make it to the warehouse to be checked in. I would suspect Apple or Verizon could tell you what the Serial number came up as.

  • How to delete a specific file type from a folder

    Hi,
    I have folders with lots of zip or rar files, once I decompress those I want to delete the compressed files specifically. Is there any way I could manage that through Automator?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Niel for the script, unfortunately I am too ignorant about running these on my own, I did save it in my user script library, but I would need instructions to run it. I would be really grateful.
    I did try making up my own workflow using the given actions in Automator, the first action was to 'find specific files in finder' ending with .zip and .rar and then choosing another action which 'moves selected files to trash'. Unfortunately it ended up running only if I specify the path to the specific .zip file, which defeats the purpose. Any suggestions on the proposed workflow? Thanks in advance.

    I wanted to delete specific attachment file(ex: ALTDESK.ZIP) through Conversion Channel.
    So I set up like below..
    1) In mappings file

    CONVERSIONS
    IN-CHAN=tcp_intranet;OUT-CHAN=tcp_local;CONVERT Yes
    ==============
    I only want to delete attached file from tcp_intranet to tcp_local.

    echo "STATUS=178030178" >> $OUTPUT_OPTIONS
    else
    cp $INPUT_FILE $OUTPUT_FILE
    fi
    =========================
    4) The problems I face are
    - All of zip files which are filtered is deleted. As you can see 2) I only want to delete ALTDESK.ZIP file
    But, all of the zip-compressed files are deleted at the moment.
    - This converison channel is work(even if all zip-compressed files are deleted). But sometimes this is not
    working(2 or 3 times out of 10). I don not know why.
    - Above all, I am not sure 2) and 3) settings are good. English is a second language to me. So it was
    not easy to understand conversion channel setting in Admin Guide.
    - How can I see the out put of "$OUTPUT_OPTIONS" ? I do not know where I can see that.
    Is there anybody to help me ?

    The section of the admin guide which can help is:
    http://docs.sun.com/source/816-6009-10/channel2.htm#42283
    Here there is an explanation of how the mime headers of the message part would align with the entries one would put into the conversions file entry. (The document has an error where it talks about APPARENT_NAME and APPARENT_FILENAME. It should really say the words "NAME" and "FILENAME" respectively).
    Based on that document, the MIME headers of your message part :
    Content-Type: application/x-zip-compressed
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
    Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=ALTDESK.ZIP
    will align with a conversions file settiong of:
    in-channel=tcp_intranet; out-channel=tcp_local;
    in-type=application; in-subtype=x-zip-compressed;
    parameter-symbol-0=NAME; parameter-copy-0=*;
    dparameter-symbol-0=FILENAME; dparameter-copy-0=*;
    message-header-file=2; original-header-file=1;
    override-header-file=1; override-option-file=1;
    command="/product/leeky/convert.sh"
    and a /product/leeky/convert.sh script which reads something like:
    #!/bin/sh
    grep "$FILENAME" /product/leek/badfiles.list
    if [ $? -eq 1 ]; then
    echo "STATUS=178030178" >> $OUTPUT_OPTIONS
    else
    grep "$NAME" /product/leek/badfiles.list
    if [ $? -eq 1 ]; then
    echo "STATUS=178030178" >> $OUTPUT_OPTIONS
    else
    cp $INPUT_FILE $OUTPUT_FILE
    fi
    fi
    The lines:
    parameter-symbol-0=NAME; parameter-copy-0=*;
    dparameter-symbol-0=FILENAME; dparameter-copy-0=*;
    tells the conversion channel to make the environment variable $NAME avaliable to your program with a value corresponding to the "name=" clause on the Content-Type line of the MIME headers. The environment variable $FILENAME is made avalable to your program and takes on the value extracted from the filename=" clause on the content-disposition line of the MIME headers.
    The document at :
    http://docs.sun.com/source/816-6092-10/conversion.html
    may help provide other examples.

  • How to either hide or delete specific computer files Time Machine

    Hi i have a MBP late 2011 with 10.8.2 on it, and i use a time capsule to store a large amount of files that i use on both my mac and my windows 7 laptops. I am getting annoyed by all the unnessicary or junk files placed in all my stuff such as:
    .ini
    thumbs.db
    .AppleDouble
    .DS_Store
    :2e*
    I would like it so i just dont see these files on either my windows 7 computer or my mac. I have my folder options on my windows 7 laptop set to hide hidden files. Is there a way to set these files to be hidden on a PC? If not is there an application on either windows 7 or mac that can clean these files from my time capsule? I know how to use terminal and CMD well enough to do a step by step.... Also i know how to change windows registry on windows 7.
    Summary:
    Time Capsule used by both Windows 7 PC and MBP
    Time Capsule is FULL of operating system files listed above
    I want to hide or delete all of these files from existence on the time capsule for BOTH my Mac and my Windows 7 computers
    If hiding them on windows/mac i would like to do this once and forever hold my peace
    if deleting them it would be easier on me if there were either a Mac or Windows application or progaram that will do it
    I can use CMD and Terminal very well, you wouldnt need to explain how to open them or such, just say a brief step by step.. Such as: 1) open terminal 2) "insert promt here" )3" next promt/ input"
    On windows i have used Windows Registry many times to edit and tweak thingsdont have to explain anything- just post which Hikey to go to, what to search and then what to edit
    Sorry that's a mouthful but i figured i can save the IT's/ DEV people out there some work by saying exactly what i want and what i know.

    You cannot delete those files.. they are OS files, and created by the OS to track changes etc.
    The Mac by default should not show hidden files. I am not sure why you are showing them unless you turned that on at some point.
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/58709/how-to-view-hidden-files-in-finde r
    That includes the command to turn off show hidden files.
    As for windows, the Unix type file marking will be completely unknown to explorer.. so you would have to go through each file type to hide extension. Windows by default nowadays does hide extensions.. if that is not working then I suspect it cannot actually recognise it.

  • Weird open command stuck under menu bar for just one specific file

    I'm having a weird problem where a little arrow in a small grey box sits under the menu bar, no matter which program is active. If I roll over it, an icon for a quicktime file shows. Clicking it open a specific file. It's one I had dragged to the desktop from the trash. If I click the icon, it opens the file from the trash. If I delete the trash, the little grey box and arrow stays there, pointing to the file in the trash even though it doesn't exist anymore. I cannot get rid of it!
    Here are some screenshots since this is hard to explain.

    I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
    Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
    The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
    How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

    Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
    In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Unable to delete a file

    I'm unable to delete a a file from the filesystem.
    String fileName = "dummy.xml"
    boolean delete = (new File(fileName)).delete();It's not deleting this file from the filesystem.

    Can anything else delete that file? Is the fileopen?
    I don't know what you mean by can anything else
    delete the file.I mean can you delete the file from the command line, a window, whatever. Is it just Java's delete that is having this problem or is it the file system?
    No this is not opened/or use.How do you know?
    DO I have to specify a path for this. Certainly. How else would Java know which file to delete?
    If yes, please read on ........
    the path where this xml file resides could by
    anywhere in the file system. If it is how do I access
    it since there is no specific location (it is left to
    the user's choise to save the file anywhere he
    wants)Keep the user's choice.

    How do you delete a file from an iPad?
    There are 2 versions of a document file on my iPad.
    I want to get rid of the obsolete one.
    The iPad Users Guide does not describe how to delete a document file.
    This is very frustrating!

    The iPad Guide is for the iPad itself, not other apps you may install.
    If you use Pages then read the online help here: http://help.apple.com/pages/ipad/2.2/ - specifically this: http://help.apple.com/pages/ipad/2.2/#/tancfc4d5c02
