Deleting the network disk

Hello all,
I wanted to know if there was a way to delete the network disk listed in the Startup Disk control panel?
-Thanks.

Hi, PSST -
None that I'm aware of. There may be a way to do it using ResEdit on one of the system's files, but which file that is and what resource in that file to alter is not something I'm aware of.
Changes made in Startup Disk control panel are entered in the Startup Disk Preferences file (in the Preferences folder in System Folder); I believe that info is transferred to PRAM when the machine is restarted or shut down, rather than immediately.
If your concern is someone (accidentally or willfully) changing the Startup Disk selection to Network Disk, you can try -
• removing the Startup Disk control panel from the Control Panels folder and hiding it (one way to do that is to make it invisible). Make sure that your preferred boot volume has been selected before removing it.
• locking the Startup Disk Preferences file. Though this is easily undone by someone savvy to unlocking and locking files, it may suffice to prevent a casual user from changing the boot volume.

Time Machine is giving an error message.  Time Machine couldnt complete the backup.  I am using the Seagate GoFlex Home.  Error message states Time Machine could not delete the backup disk image "/volumes/Go Flex Home Backup/iMAc.sparsebundle".  Does anybody have any ideas?

I have deleted all files in the Time Machine backup via Windows, Finder, and GoFlex UI.
I think this is your problem.. you need to follow the exact setup from seagate to get TM running again.. please read the manual... I do not have one but I do have another brand of NAS and setting up TM involves a fairly complex set of instructions.. because it is not a native Apple device.. your computer does not recognise it as TM capable.. you need to use the work around the manual will explain.

This past month I have been having problems connecting to my home wireless connection. I have a MacBook Pro OSX Version 10.6.8. Previously I had no problems whatsoever. I have tried unplugging the wireless router, turning off the wirless airport, deleting the network name from my list of servers and trying to reconnect this way. These methods have worked temporarily, but the same problem keeps coming back. Most of the time my personal wireless connection does not even come up among the list of available networks. My fellow flatmates have PCs and both of them are able to connect to the network without problem.
The router is a d-link model DIR-615. I am not tech savy, so if any other information need to be provided in order to better understand my situation, please let me know.
    Please help me!

If I open the list of networks in a window it says "connection timeout," but if I just select it from the drop down it tries for awhile and then stops with no prompt. When I try to run network diagnostics it says "sorry, we can't connect to the internet" (or some solution-free variation of that)

  • "Time Machine could not delete the backup disk"

This morning, I got the "Time Machine must create a new backup for you" message referred to here:  http://pondini.org/TM/C13.html
I went ahead and told it "start new backup" but after a few minutes, got this message, ending in error message -1:  "Time Machine could not delete the backup disk."  It did not reference a sparsebundle file or some other specific file name as I've seen in some other threads, and I haven't been able to find this exact issue anywhere in the forum or on Pondini's page.
I went ahead and told it manually to do a new backup, but I am concerned that it will "lie to me" about the verifiability of the files per Pondini's page above (orange box at the bottom).  I'll attempt to force it to manually verify once this backup completes to see what happens, I guess.
    I'd appreciate any input.

And now an effort to manually start a backup produces this error:  "This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 233.73 GB but only 188.30 GB are available."

    Hi,
I'm a little to quick for my own good when it comes to using the mouse. I accidentally dragged the network button out of the sidebar in the finder and don't know how to get it back.
    Can anyone help?

Go to Finder > Preferences, select the Sidebar tab, and check the box next to Network.

  • Airport Extreme is toast; how to read the network disk via USB?

My Airport Extreme Base Station is toast; light is green, but it won't respond to anything and the MacBook no longer sees it. Tried resetting it; this thing is done.
Well, as I was writing earlier, I have a hard drive connected to the Base Station I've been using for Time Machine backups. Seeing as now my Base Station is dead, I need to hook this hard drive up directly to the MacBook using USB or FireWire. Well, I've done that, and Time Machine has no clue how to access this drive. Using the "Browse Other Time Machine Volumes" does not bring up this drive.
I have some absolutely critical data I need to reach, and it's more than frustrating knowing it's on this hard drive, yet I'm completely unable to access it... I've been good and backed up my data in case of loss, only to have the backup seem to not work at the same time.

...is there a way I can force my MBP to only connect to the n base station ?
Don't use the 802.11b/g/n AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to extend the 802.11b/g AEBS's network. Not only must this use 802.11g for the connection between the 2 AEBSs, but that connection uses WDS which cuts your wireless bandwidth in half. So the MacBook Pro may connect to the 802.11b/g/n AEBS with 802.11n but the data transfer speed is limited to 27 Mbps.
Instead connect the 2 AEBS's vie Ethernet and create a dual-band network. You will find threads describing this and it is also documented in Apple's documentation.

What you see here is a classical problem. Your storage is too slow,
which unfortunately is "normal" for Netware iSCSI. Your workstation is
using a GB connection, right? The "freez" you see is not really a
freeze, it *will* recover on it's own, but it seems frozen when the
Netware file cache is full. Your workstation writes the data faster to
the server than the disk (iscsi) can write. I'm afraid there's nothing
    you can do, sorry. :(

  • Disk Utility won't let me delete the partition disk

can some body help me for that ...?

What specific steps have you tried so far. Is your disk full (with only a few GB left on it)? When you go to Disk Utility, are you selecting your drive device (above the listed volumes) or are you selecting your boot volume or other volumes in an attempt to split them up?

  • Hi. Does anyone know how to delete my guest network from the list of network choices that everyone in the neighborhood sees when picking a network?  Followed helpful suggestions on this site to delete the netwk but it still appears.  Appreciate any help!

Hi.  I'm trying to make my guest network disappear from the list of network choices that appears to everyone in the neighborhood.  Even though I followed the great suggestions on how to delete the network, it's still appearing in the list that everyone sees.  It has my name and would prefer to get rid of it.
    Please help!  Many thanks!

Thank you for not only the tip but also especially the research showing that for anybody other that those using Wi-Fi for the first time the network wouldn't disappear.  I wanted it to disappear for everyone so.....I finally solved it by resetting the Airport Extreme to the factory settings and starting over from scratch!  It worked! Yay!!!!!
So, for everyone that has had this problem (and I've read many of the same complaints in different places on the Internet), you must go into Airport Utility and check the box stating that you want to reset it to the factory settings.  Do not do it with a paper clip and the reset button on the box; I tried that first and it did not work.  You must reset it via the Airport Utility.  Then just start over and you will have the choice to NOT check the box to Enable Guests.  If you want to enable guests, just be sure not to use your name or you're back to the same problem. Apple is so great with everything...wouldn't it have been so easy for them to just put this in the manual somewhere?????  Thanks for all your help.    Hope this helps others!

  • User permission on SMB mounted network disk

I have a Buffalo TeraStation automounted via "NetInfo Manager" in my G5. But only the user that I used to mount the disk, and the root user can access the mounted disk. Other users in the same machine can't get permission to the network disk.
Does anyone know how do I add the permission for other users? Thanks!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Ok found a sollution, i tried a couple of things, it boils down to this.
    login as admin user
    1. demote the network user to a local user,
use workgroup manager for it use export in menu to export user from LDAP
import to Local directory, reset the password and delete the LDAP user.
    2. you chould now be able to localy login to the account, do that.
    3. open the terminal and run the following commands (probably need sudo for it and you need to change <username> to the user you want to change)
         chmod -R -N /Users/<username>/
         chown -R <username>:staff /Users/<username>
         chmod -R 700 /Users/<username>
    4. check that every thing in you're account is working again as should.
    5. promote local user to network user.
use workgroup manager for it use export in menu to export user from Local
import to LDAP directory, reset the password and delete the Local user.
this did the trick for me, hope it helps.

  • Sharing iTunes library between 2 computers and 2 iPods via network disk?

    Hi,
Me and the missus each got a laptop -hers a PC and mine a MacBook.
We both use iTunes and we've both got an iPod.
Recently I bought an Aiport Express and hooked it up with a 1TB WD MyBook -is there any way that we can share our iTunes library via the network disk, so that we can 1. have full read/write access from both laptops and 2. both sync our iPods?
Furthermore, is there a way for iTunes to monitor the music folder, so instead of me dragging music into iTunes (e.g. CD's that were ripped with other software than iTunes) iTunes would just update every once in a while, to check for new mp3's (kinda like Picasa does with pictures)?
More questions most likely will pop up, but this is the most pressing ones.
    Thanks in advance
    /Jakob F.

*is there a way for iTunes to monitor the music folder, so instead of me dragging music into iTunes*
iTunes doesn't support folder watching, anything you add to a folder on your hard drive has to be manually added to the iTunes Library: Adding Content to iTunes
You could have a look at this Applescript for folder watching on a Mac: Doug's Applescripts - Folder Actions and iTunes or this program for Windows: iTunes Folder Watch for Windows
You'd need to do a deeper bit of research on both as I don't know if either would work from a folder that's effectively not on either computer

  • How do I get my old printer off the network?

    Hello
I have a Lexmark Z1480 - if I go onto Bonjour I can see the network webpage my my printer configurations...
I have uninstalled all Lexmark software etc as best I could and that part seems OK...
There is still however the Lexmark network webpage that my wireless printer was using to print wirelessly on my network...
How can I get rid of this webpage - I just want shot of it!!
    Many Thanks,
    Mr Totsy

    Ok...here goes...
Uninstalled all Lexmark drivers, utilities, software junk from the HD...
Dragged and dropped the ones that didn't go at the 'uninstall' into the Trash...the machine is now completely clear
When I switch the printer on, the wireless WIFI icon on the side of the printer is still glowing 'green'...
It is clearly still connected to my wireless network somehow...
I want to install a new printer onto my network and i'm sure the software that comes with the new printer will allow me to do that no problem...
When I click on the printers network webpage (click on 'show all bookmarks'; select Bonjour; it's listed below the Bonjour intro page) it has all the settings which allow the printer to work correctly on my home network...
Here is the million dollar question...how do I delete that page? It is password protected and no doubt it will be difficult to crack, but wouldn't it be much more secure for me if it wasn't there to be cracked in the first place?
Any help on how to delete the network connection for my printer would be very much appreciated...it is still there after the uninstall process...
Any and all please wade into the debate...the more help the better...I'm a bit of a luddite when it comes to tech stuff like this...
There are plenty of Mac Experts who could give me a hand here !!!!!
    Many Thanks,

  • My time Machine keeps saying, "Time Machine could not complete the backup. This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 345.74 GB but only 289.80 are available." I have already excluded files. I have a 1tb external drive. HELP!!!

For over two weeks now I have been frustated and not having my TIme Machine back up to my 1tb external drive. I dont understand why now its a problem.  It keeps saying
"This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 345.74GB but only 289.80GB are avialable.  Time Machine needs work space on the bakup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a large backup disk or make the bakup smaller by excluding files." So I have already excluded almost all of my files, and even deleted the backup disk yet, that quote still keeps popping up. I am truly at a wall with this. I have a Mac OS X version 10.7.5. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE????

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.
