Deleting thumbnails from Organiser

If I delete thumbnails from the Organiser main window, the same thumbnails are also deleted from my Collections and tagged files.
Is it necessary for the Organiser to work that way or am I missing something? I just wanted to have less thumnnails to scroll through and once they are tagged it seemed logical to delete the thumbnails from the main window.
Thanks
John

John,
In addition to suggestions such as using a Show tag, it seems that for some cases the Find menu choice of "find untagged items" might be useful for you.
Another general comment is that you probably do not want to place all photos in Collections. I use Collections to make specific arrangements of photos for specific purposes like a slide show. If I have photos from an event like a family birthday party, I make a Tag for the event and then also apply people tags. Only when I am ready to use the photos for something like a slide show where I also want to control sequence, do I make a Collection.
Sometimes people start by using a Collection instead of a Tag for an Event. A Tag has more flexibilty for searching and is therefore almost always better for identification of the photos.

  • Delete Thumbnails from iPhoto? (deleted originals from Finder)

Hi, I don't use iPhoto (find it too constrictive) but a friend asked for help with using it. It appears he was trying to clean out his large photo collection, but decided to do it from the Finder (now why would anyone in their right mind think you could delete files using the Finder?!?)
Unfortunately, he now says that the files are not gone from iPhoto. I'm assuming he's still seeing the thumbnail images that iPhoto creates.
    - Is there 'any' way to find all of the missing files within iPhoto so you can delete them and/or their thumbnails from the iPhoto library?
I know how to do this in iView easy enough, but didn't see a 'find missing' command in iPhoto.
I told him that in the future, to do 'ALL' housekeeping from within the "i" programs that ship with a Mac. They seem to like to keep complete control of where everything is, how it's filed, how it's labled, etc. That's probably why I don't prefer to use them. Any exceptions to this??
    Thanks!

Anybody have any ideas?? I'm sure there must be some people who have run into this.

  • Thumbnails from deleted photos

The thumbnails from deleted photos are showing up instead of the correct thumbnails. When I click on the thumbnail, a completely different photo opens. I have emptied my trash.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Sounds like you have a damaged database file in the library. Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Word for Mac. Duplicate/Delete Selection from Thumbnails

I love my Pages, but the people who are using the documents I create are Word only. How can I duplicate and delete Selections from the Thumbnail Sidebar in Word for Mac? And how can they do the same thing in regular Word on their PC?

OK, well, a quick web search turned up this:
    http://mac.microsoft.com/help/office/12/en-us/word/item/f37a450f-f847-489e-b0da- b69df48cd740
    That should help.
For future questions, you should generally ask in the most appropriate hardware or Mac OS X forum. You'll be more likely to get help that way. This forum is for questions about the Communities themselves.

  • Extract thumbnails from PE7 Organiser

Recently an external drive failed irrecoverably and I lost a lot of photographs. However, even though the photos are no longer on the system, PE7 Organiser still displays thumbnails of them.  I want to extract these from Organiser into separate thumbnail-sized jpegs (or whatever) so that I have a low-res record of the pictures I have lost.  Obvously I can store each pageful on the clipboard and manually crop each thumbnail out and save it,  but I had hoped there was a more efficient way. I can program in VB and C++ so if I can locate the file in which the thumbnails are stored, I can probably write something to extract them.
Can someone tell me where PE7 Organiser stores the thumbnails?

    @dj_paige:
Hmmm... well, if PE can read the cache file, then so can any program that knows how the file is laid out -  but finding that out might be quite a task, unless some helpful Adobe employee can point me to the appropriate literature!

Files exist in the Windows "Recycle Bin" until you empty it. To do that, you would right click on the icon, then select "Empty Recycle Bin", then they're gone forever, no turning back.
Tags, once written to a photo are forever. The only explanation I have for this, would be one; if these are downloaded photos, tags may have been set by the originator, or possibility two; a data base faiilure in PSE may be picking up tags that are actually on another one of your photos. If the tags are in fact, not a tag that you've created, then the former is likely the explanation.
As far as creating individual folders for photos, that's rather easy to do. First you pick a location, whether it is another drive , or a separate folder within "My Pictures", the copy the pictures from the camera card directly to there with Windows "copy and paste". After that, you can drag them into the organizer, or use "File" > "Get Photos from Files and Folders" to import them to PSE.
That being said, once a photo is where you want it, and has been imported to PSE....DO NOT further tamper with it in Windows.
IMO, you need to learn a bit more about negotiating and creating the files and folders in Windows itself, before you try to set up a file and folder system for your images. PSE is the "great babysitter" when it comes to guiding inexperienced users to their images.
That said, when PSE screws up, we still wind up answering a lot of paniced user's questions, all of whom think the PSE has "lost all their images".

  • Delete photo from iPhoto library and HDD

Hopefully I'm not repeating a previous thread...
Not being an expert, am I correct in saying that iPhoto only changes its version of the photo when editing it?
Also, if you delete the photo by moving it to the trash can, it doesn't physically delete it from the HDD? (When you empty the trash can)
This causes a problem for a few reasons.
I have just loaded Medialink PS3 which allows the iMac to serve the PS3. (BTW - Good product)
If you point Medialink to the original HDD folder then this still includes photos I thought I had deleted.
Also If I want to burn a cd with the photo folder external to iPhoto , the "deleted" photos are also burnt.
I copied all of the photos from a windows PC, and Picasa allowed you to physically delet from its own folder as well as the HDD.
    Doesn't iPhoto 09 allow this?
What would iPhoto do if I went through and cleaned up the external folder and deleted jpgs or edited using Canon editing software? If using the external editor, would iPhoto reflect the changes?
    Sorry if this is verbose.
    regards,

You might want to have a llook at the iPhoto tutorials. They cover a lot of these basics.
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#iphoto-hero
And the version of iPhoto you are using?
I'm not at all sure that a Referenced Library is what you want. In fact I strongly recommend against it. But however:
    *How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    +Some Other Comments+
iPhoto will not touch any file outside its library. Period.
It will copy files on import and leave existing files untouched,
It will delete files within the Library but not outside the Library.
When you choose to go with a Referenced Library you are deciding that You want to manage the Files. You want to import them from the camera, you want to sort them however you want and you want to delete them yourself. That's the point of a referenced Library.
I just did a test by editing a photo using Canon Professional and the changes were not reflected in iPhoto. And vise versa.
The point of iPhoto is that you interface with your Photos via the Application. Like Addressbook for your contacts, iTunes for your Music, it's the go-to app for your Photos.
So, you want to edit Photos, you go to iPhoto and use the External Editor:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.

  • Script to make 'delete' file from system and not just library svp.

I would like something, possibly a script, to replace the delete option in iTunes so that a file deleted from within iTunes is actually deleted from the HDD. I have downloaded a script that can do this but the option ad to be called from the script menu and was not convenient, so I am looking for a way to amend or replace the menu option to achieve this in a natural fashion.

Okay, here I found this page: http://ask.metafilter.com/18737/How-can-I-make-iTunes-delete-songs-again
which is nice and informative. What I have found is that in order to delete files natively from within iTunes the default settings of keeping your music files in the iTunes music folder (which can be modified to another directory in iTune's preferences) must be left untouched. This is because iTunes will only delete files from the HDD if they reside in the music folder iTunes refences to. Its a nice structured system that iTunes itself keeps organised so its the better option, as oposed to having files everywhere.
In order to reset the iTunes dialog messages, the file "com.apple.iTunes.plist" in the "~/Library/Preferences/" dir must be deleted - which resets everything, as the documentation suggests you will know because the copyright agreement will launch when iTunes is started. Please make sure iTunes is off before deleting the file. The documentation also suggests deleting another file but I didn't do this and it worked for me.
However the ability to delete movies from the HDD is not an option from within iTunes, I suggest finding a script that will move all movies in a certain playlist to the recycle bin folder

  • How to delete files from an attached camera after downloading?

New to Aperture 2. I am sure to have a lot of exploring to do but for now I am looking for a way to delete files from an attached camera after downloading like you can with iPhoto. Is this possible?

While I might be a bit paranoid, I prefer to format in the camera after verifying that the import came out OK. It is a small price to pay to make sure that my images are actually on the computer. I don't do anything fancy, just make sure that the thumbnails come up correctly, and maybe perform an edit.
While it was not my images, thank goodness, I did get bit in a similar fashion. I use a "watch fob" style GPS unit for Geocoding. I have hoodahgeo configured to delete my tracks after import. Well, after one session I forgot to update my images with the gps information. As you can guess, when I re-opened HoodahGeo to try and re-geotag, the tracks were gone, so I was out of luck.

  • Unable to delete photos from iPad(1)

    Hi,
Firstly I apologise for the length of this submission but I need to detail all steps taken to date do you folks can see what I have tried ....and failed!
I run a kids charity and each year taken hundreds of photos. They are organised into events for each days activity. They re always translferred from my Camera Card onto my desktop Mac (Big Mac) and then sync'd to the Ipad.
At the end of the group visit I then putall photos into the one event and name it, i.e. Group visit 2012. This has always worked well and after syn would be the same on the Ipad.
However, after doing this I found I had the Group Visit 2012 event on the Ipad but also, about 150 photos from different days "outside" the Group event, as if they were events of there own. This onlyappeared on the Ipad not on Iphoto on the Big Mac. AS I cannot delete them from the Ipad I started to search this forum for advice.
So far this is what I have done: I emptied the trash on the Big Mac Iphoto. I then turned off the wirelss sync on the Ipad, connected it directly to the Big Mac and via Itunes unchecked, "Sync all photos". When this was finished I restarted the Ipad and, as it should have been, there were no photos preset at all.
I went back to the Big Mac, check that there were no suprious photos anywhere in Iphoto and that the trash was emptied. Reconnected the Ipad and set a Sync going. It showed a sync progressing transferring back all the p hotos from Iphoto on the Big Mac. When it was finished I checked the Ipad but all the odd photos were back again!!!!!!!  I even tried deleting some of hte photos on the Big Mac that were in the main group visit event but also showing as seperate event items on the ipad, then emptied the trash so at this point the photos do not exist at all. Re syncd with the Ipad expecting them to disappear but they are still there!
So, does anyone have any suggesions how I can get rid of these photos from the Ipad without having to just wipe the whole thing and revery back to factory?
many thanks to all who take the time to read and to all those who offer any help.
    Alphacenturi
    keep laughing.............

You still have to unsync them to remove then. Sync to an empty folder in iTunes and that should remove them. Create a folder on your hard drive and just leave it empty.
Connect your iPad to your computer and launch iTunes.
Select the iPad under the devices heading in the left sidebar. If you don't see the sidebar go to View>Show Sidebar from the iTunes menu.
Click on the Photos tab on the right at the top of the window.
Using the Sync Photos from drop down menu, select the empty folder on your hard drive.
Make sure that the Sync Photos From heading has a checkmark in the box next to the heading
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes.

  • Unable to delete photos from my ipad2 .

I am unable to delete photos from my ipad2. I am able to select the photos to delete but when I press the red delete button nothing happens. Is anyone else having this experience? Is there a known problem. Is there a solution?

You don't say what type of photos - were they taken with the iPad or synced from your computer ?
Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/wesites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad - either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view. Photos that were synced from your computer are deleted by removing them from where they were synced from and then re-syncing (if you were able to delete them directly on the iPad, then the next time you synced photos they would be put back onto the iPad, unless you remembered to also remove them from your computer).

DVDs are encoded into MPEG2, which iMovie cannot edit. So you need to convert the DVD back to something else. For highest quality, I recommend that you convert the DVD to Apple Intermediate Codec. There is a free tool called MPEG Streamclip that will do this. You will also need to install the Apple QuickTIme MPEG2 Playback Component.
    Here are the details.
    1) Download and install the Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Component ($20) - available online from Apple.
    2) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
    3) Start MPEG Streamclip
    4) Insert your DVD into your Mac. If DVD Player or Front Row starts automatically quit those.
    5) Open a Finder window. Navigate to your DVD to the Video_TS folder.
    6) Drag the .VOB files from the Video_TS folder and drop then into MPEG Streamclip.
    7) If MPEG Streamclip offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes.
    8) Use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (or h.264 if you prefer)
9a) Optional: You can deinterlace your footage in this step, if you like
9b) optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month.
9c) Optional: If you don't want to make one huge clip out of your DVD, you can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o. Then do steps 8 through 10 and repeat until you have done this for all clips you want.
    10) Save the resulting file in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
    11) Open iMovie.
    12) In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/From File and choose the file you saved in steps 8, 9, 10.
    13) iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit.

  • Deleting Photos from my hard drive

I have to create some more room on my hard Drive I have backed it up. I have over 10,000 pictures in iphoto and I have deleted 8000 from my originals file however the thumbnails in the photo albums still exist? how do I get rid of them.
When I back up my photos does it keep my photo albums titles or do I need to keep them in photo even though they do not have pictures?

    Hi there
    I highly recommend iPhotoDiet
    http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~fuhrer/personal/freestuff/iphotodiet/
It's very good at clearing up your iPhoto library. When you rotate an image or make any changes to it, iPhoto saves an extra copy. It means you get a highly bloated library in no time at all. iPhoto Diet finds all these extra thumbnails and deletes them.
It can take a while to sift through the whole thing first time around, but it is very good.
    Hope this is helpful

You need to keep the keys pressed for several seconds. Close down Elements. Hold down the CtrlShiftAlt keys and simultaneously click on the Edit button on the welcome screen. Release the three keys and look behind the welcome screen by closing it. Or hold down the keys whilst clicking on the desktop icon for the Editor or PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe in the Programs folder. Keep holding down all three keys until you get the settings option.
