Deleting Thumbs.db

I recently learned how to use Spotlight to delete every file of a certain name on my hard drive. I used the technique to purge some websites I imported from my PC. But I ran into a problem when I tackled Thumbs.db, because files of that name are also found in Photoshop - and perhaps other programs.
Someone told me it would probably be OK to delete all these files, as they would likely be automatically recreated by any software programs that use them. I'm a little reluctant to take that chance, but I could reinstall Photoshop if I messed things up.
But I wondered if anyone can tell me if there are any Thumbs.db files native to Leopard? In other words, if I delete all these files, might I mess up my operating system or some associated Apple software programs somehow?
As I understand it, Thumbs.db is designed to cache thumbnail images. However, it's apparently a Microsoft creation, so I don't understand why it's in Photoshop - unless they are two different files that simply share the same name.
Thanks.

you can trash them. They serve no purpose in OS X. You will not do any harm to OS X.

someone told me to try iFunbox and delete thumbs file from filesystem so i did and now i have the same pics but only thumbnails when i click on one of them its black screen.
mow after restarting my phone and syncing all photos and videos from camera roll are gone i think i messed up so bad and photo library folder looks so messy like a long black screen
can someone tell me what to do ? i don't wanna restore and lose all my apps/games
    thank you

    You cannot remove photo library.
It will always be there.  This is where all photos synced to iphone reside.
    Have you tried a reset?
If that fails, then you will likely need to restore.

  • Photoshop Elements with too many bugs

I have been using your Photoshop elements for a lot of years now and a lot of different versions.
This is because I have been very satisfied with the program and its quality.
Now I have bought the latest version 12 and have found it totally impossible to use.
What have happened with your quality?
1   When I click on "Organise" I am always thrown out of the program completely. The only way to come to my albums is to click to "Editor" and then go through the backdoor and in "Editor" click on "Organise". This is not the way I want it to be!
2   I have been using my albums in Elements versions 5, 6, 9 and 10 without any problems regarding time delays. I am using raw-format so I am used to wait a little (=  some seconds) before the photo appears. This has however not been any problem for me!
In version 12 a lot of photos are shown only with hourglasses and the ones that originally are shown correctly will change to hourglasses after a period of time. After that time I am sitting looking upon only a lot of hourglasses.
These hourglasses never changes to any photo irrespective how long time I wait.
Thus, I cannot use this programme.
3   For many of my albums a lot of photos are shown indication for "no link". For the same installation this has never happened in previous versions.
In the same album photos are shown both as photos or as indications as "no link". All photos are placed in the same catalogue and I cannot understand the difference.
Thus, I cannot use this programme.

Try deleting the thumbnail cache. Start by closing Elements and click the Windows start button >> Computer.  Navigate to:
    C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\MyCatalog
Inside the My Catalog folder (or whatever name you gave your catalog) you should find a CACHE file:
    thumb.5.cache
Highlight that file and delete it.
After deleting thumb.5.cache restart the elements Organizer and wait. It should regenerate a new set of thumbnails.
N.B. if you can’t immediately find the ProgramData folder it’s probably a hidden system file.
Here's how to display hidden files and folders.
Click the Windows Start Button >> Control Panel >> Folder Options
(Folder Options could be located under Appearance and Personalization or All Control Panel Items; or find it in Windows Explorer,  choose Tools >> Folder Options)
In the folder options dialog click the View tab.
Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files, folders, and drives, and then click OK.

  • Is my K9N Diamond defective?

I have had quite a few problems so this is gonna be a long one.
    Hi everyone.
Recently (1½ weeks ago), i bought all the parts i needed for a new computer. Heres the list:
    MSI K9N-Diamond
    AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+ EE (Energy Efficient 65Watt) + Zalman CNPS9500-AM2 CPU cooler
    Corsair XMS2 (2x 1024MB, DDR2-800, 5-5-5-12-T1)
    Thermaltake 680Watt
     - +3.3v = 28A
     - +5v = 30A
     - +121 = 14A
     - +122 = 23A
     - +123 = 15A
    XFX GeForce 7900GT, 256MB PCI-E
2x WD Caviar Raid Edition 320GB SATAII, with NCQ
    And a floppy drive
Problems started from day one. First time boot, i enter BIOS. Change various stuff (like disabling Seriel/Paralell ports, disabling IEEE1394, setting boot order, enabling RAID controller and enabling all devices). I then enter RAID controller setup (F10), put my 2 WD drives in a raid0 array for maximum performance.
Pop in my WinXP cd, boot, press F6, loading BOTH the required drivers from the floppy i made using MSI cd in my old computer. I see one big drive with roughly 600GB. I make one partition on 16GB for Windows. Choose quick NTFS format, and setup starts copying files.
Then the trouble started, after copying alot of files, i suddenly got a message that setup was unable to copy the file: ABC.XYZ
I just thought: Argh, my cd is probally dusty, Open cdrom, look at cd. No scratches, no dust, no fingerprints... I clean the Phantom dust off the CD at put it in again, but it still cant copy. I restart the computer, starting over from beginning, remove partition and make a new one.
But same results, the setup copies some files but the stops with an "unable to copy" error, only this time its another file.
I tried serveral times, everytim a new file at a new random location in the copy process.
As i have no spare Windows CD, i went to my old computer, downloaded a new WinCD, burned it and tried again... but same results.
I started looking around various forums and found that other ppl had problems with the raid controller, and disabling would fix their problems. I really want to run Raid0 so this is kinda a last resort for me, but i tried it anyways... Enter Raid setup and remove the strip, enter BIOS and disable RAID controller, reboot and retry installing windows.
To my surprise, Windows Setup could actually copy the files and install Windows with no problems whatsoever.
I looked on MSI website and found that a new BIOS was up with the following bugfix:
"Fixed system can not auto boot from Nvidia Stripe 465.77G when onchip raid is enable."
It sounded familar to my problem so I flashed the new BIOS, reset CMOS, booted and made the usual changes in BIOS, made a new strip array in Raid controller setup.
I proceed with installing Windows the same way as described above, but same "cannot copy file xyz.abc" error.
So i destroy the raid array, disable raid controller and install windows again on single disks.
    Next problem.
After windows is installed, I install all the drivers from MSI CD and the Creative Sound Blaster CD. I have a Denon 5.1 Surround Reciever hooked up to Coaxial S/PDIF on my computer. In Creative speaker setup, i choose "5.1 Speakers" and click test... but i get no sound. I see the "Digital Output Only" option and enable it and test again... this time i get sound, but ONLY from front left and front right speakers. Furthermore, i NEED the analog output aswell so "Digital Output Only" option should not be enabled in my case. I checked Creative homepage and found this: "On all Audigy series cards, S/PDIF cannot be disabled". That leaves me to think that S/PDIF should work regardless of that "Digital Output Only" setting. Furthermore, when i activate that option, not only does it disable the analog output but also the analog input (Microphone in this case, which i need).
The weird thing is that analog output works fine with surround sound (tried with some 5.1 headphones).
    Next problem
Now ive been running with singledisk setup (non raid) for a week. But i have an alarming amount of BSoD errors. Its not just one BSoD, but all kinds of different errors. It is noteable that most of these errors are disk or driver related. After I got alot of different, i started writing them down. Heres a few:
    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    0x0A (0x0000FFDF, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0xSomeAddress)
"Typically due to a bad driver, or faulty or incompatible hardware or software. Technically, this error condition means that a kernel-mode process or driver tried to access a memory location to which it did not have permission, or at a kernel Interrupt ReQuest Level (IRQL) that was too high. (A kernel-mode process can access only other processes that have an IRQL lower than, or equal to, its own)"
    KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
0x8E (0xC0000005, rest of parameters is junk)
"A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler didn’t catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues (which sometimes means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS upgrade)."
The following 2 errors happened alot while i was copying data from my old computer through network WHILE playing a game to kill time.
    KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
    0x7A (0xjunk, 0xC0000185, 0xjunk, 0xjunk)
This error gave me the filename Win32k.sys with the address being the same as parameter 3 in the error code.
"A page of kernel data was not found in the pagefile and could not be read into memory. This might be due to incompatible disk or controller drivers, firmware, or hardware."
    KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR
    0x77 (0xC0000185, 0xC0000185, 0x00000000, 0x00Frandom)
"A page of kernel data requested from the pagefile could not be found or read into memory. This message also can indicate disk hardware failure, disk data corruption, or possible virus infection."
While downloading some lost data via BitTorrent and watching a movie (on the computer), I got this error a few times (30 or so minuttes apart):
    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    0xD1 (0x00000064, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0xjunk)
A filename was supplied: NVTcp.sys (A quick search revealed this as being nVidia Firewall, so i unistalled nVidia NAM)
"The system attempted to access pageable memory using a kernel process IRQL that was too high. The most typical cause is a bad device driver (one that uses improper addresses). It can also be caused by caused by faulty or mismatched RAM, or a damaged pagefile."
Also got a few 0xF4 errors.
Most of these errors suggest RAM failure, so i started testing with Memtest86+ and let it run over night. 10 passes, 0 errors.
    Next problem
This one is a bit more serious to me. As you might have read above, i was downloading some lost data via BitTorrent. This is how i lost it.
I have an External Maxtor 300GB HDD with USB connection. I use this to store movies when i go to friends and such.
Yesterday i plugged it in for the first time using front panel USB, Windows popped up and told me new hardware installed and bla bla.
I browsed the HDD and i saw a "thumbs.db". I dont like those hidden windows files (and i have them disabled), so i fired up a search for Thumbs.db. When search was finished, i selected all and pressed delete. DING "Windows cannot delete Thumbs.db. File not found.". I browsed the file using explorer and tried deleting it, but same error.
    Start->Run->CMD
    g:\>chkdsk /f /r
    CHKDSK cannot scan RAW-Filesystem.
The file system is NTFS btw. So i safely removed and replugged the device, this time windows did not recognice the device. I tried different USB port (still front panel) and the drive got installed but was unaccessible, until i reformated it.
Could this be connected to above bluescreen and potential hardware errors that the HDD got wiped when i plugged it in or is this just bad coincidence?
    Please help!

Disable memory EPP mode and retest. ("SLI-Ready Memory" from BIOS, enabled by default)
your board support(feature only on nVidia nForce 590 SLI that's mean only for K9N Diamond) this newest feature provide enhance performance via Enhanced Performance Profiles stored in SPD Memory. if your system memory do not support this feature and option is "Auto" or "Enabled" issues are expected. Sli Ready Memory:
EPP: This is an open memory standard put forth by Corsair and nVIDIA which takes over where JEDEC's SPD leaves off. As the Enhanced Performance Profiles description implies, it adds performance profiles to the memory SPD in addition to the conservative compatibility settings already programmed in. EPP compliant memory is dubbed "SLI Ready" memory on nVidia platforms (great marketing on nVIDIA's part) and allows the system to dynamically tighten up memory timings and increase voltages for better performance with no fuss. Whether you're a novice or experienced computer user, the benefits of EPP are immediate. Corsair is the initial memory manufacturer out the door with this new technology but others are already following suit.

  • Thumbnails for TIF files are not latest image-CS3

When I save a (flattened) image in TIF, I get only a partial thumbnail--often a previous layer or selection or something from the clipboard. This is in CS3 (on XP) but also used to happen in PS7.

Since you mentioned XP I am assuming your issue is Windows Explorer.
Right click on the file and select refresh thumbnail. I am thinking this is a database issue and is not updating. If that does not do it, then delete thumbs.db.
If both of those don't work, then I would assume trashing the preference file for photoshop would be next.
Thats about all I can think of for now.

  • Script to automatically make a stack with a RAW+jpg pair of images

While on my last trip, I accidently setup my camera to take Raw + small jpg. No big deal, that isn't too much memory, so I didn't really worry about it. When I got home, the jpg files were copied to my hard drive along with the raw files. So, I went to delete the jpgs and I realized something. Bridge runs very fast when it's drawing thumbnails and previews of small jpg images. I got to thinking. Wouldn't it be cool to make a script that would take your raw+jpg from the camera and convert each pair into a stack with the jpg on top. This would enable bridge to run much more quickly since it wouldn't need to render all those raw image thumbs and previews.
Hmmm....now where to start....I looked around at the scripting language for photoshop. since I have written a little bit of javascript, I thought I would start there, but I can't find where the stack property is kept in metadata or the DOM.
Any ideas of where I might turn from here?

Wie kann ich die Miniaturansichten wieder aktivieren?

  • I can't delete the .thumb.db file from a client computer

In my LAN I have a main computer, the server, that shares a folder. Other users of the LAN can access to the foler and copy, modify and delete files. However, many times when the user try to delete a folder get an error that says that the file thumb
can't be delete because the file explorer has opened the file. That's is not true.
The user has the needed permissions to delete the files, but for some reason he can't.
I know that one solution is to show icons instead of miniature in the file explorer, but it is not a solution in this case, because the user uses many photos and it's easier to see the miniatures instead of the icons.
How can I solve the problem and delete this file? Any easy and permanent solution? because this occurs in many folders and the user don't have a hugh knowledgement of windows.
    Thank so much.

    Hi,
We can disable the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files via Group policy to fix this issue:
    1.Run gpedit.msc
    2.Navigate to:
       User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\File Explorer
3.Set “Turn off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files” to Enable.
4.You may need to log off or force group policy to update before this takes effect, I am not sure.
To force group policy to update, run gpupdate /force
Now you will need to clean the thumbs.db files that are already created. To do this we are gonna use the disk cleanup tool.
Press again Windows key + R to start run and write there cleanmgr then Enter。
This will start the Disk cleanup tool. Select the drive you want to clean , if you have more drives you gonna have to repeat this for each drive.
Disk cleanup tool will calculate for a bit what files can be deleted and then the following window will appear.
Make sure the Thumbnails is checked and press OK .  That is it. Now you can delete those folders you want to go away.

  • Deleting multiple "thumb.db" cause OSX to hang totally

I plug in a USB Fat32 drive with about 50% capacity usage. On the drive hold lots of my pictures. Window's system have left behind a lot of thumbs.db file and I would like to delete them. I open finder and using the find option search only in the usb drive and for filenames. once the list of thumbs.db filename is listed I selected all and chose to move them to trash. I have tried both selecting via the drop down menu and using command and delete button. gave it a couple more tried but it just hang the system completely. anyone else encounter this? can this problem be replicated on another system? I was trying to delete about 149 files at one go.

I presume the drive is FAT32. Leopard may not be able to remove those files or worse, mess up the drive completely.
I suggest removing these files in a Windows environment.

  • After deleting some unnecessary Apps in my Macbook Pro, I plugged my thumb drive to discover that I can't open my files, which I normally can, because they've turned into ".lnk" files. Please help.

I have files in my thumb drive that I cant open. Inside my thumb drive, I've organized files in folders but I have files I havent put in folders yet. Those files turned into .lnk files.
My theory is, my thumb drive caught a virus from another laptop because I copied files from my colleagues laptop.

There are no viruses for a Mac, new theory required. .lnk files are aliases to a file, what did you delete?

If one drive works and the other doesn't that points the finger at the errant drive. They are cheap, replace it. To check formatting right click it in Finder and choose Get Info and look for Format type. Finally do you eject it when removing it or do you just pull it out of the USB connection?

    You are both right.

My system trash finally emptied when I discovered "trash it!" is not longer supported by the most recent osx.  Then I found an updated version of Onyx that did work with that trash emptying problem.
I have a total of 5,723 photos in my library.  A macdevelopers group recently started suggesting a multi library manager for iphoto to overcome some kind of library quota limitations with iphoto as opposed to "more advanced" photo handling, storing and editing programs.  If I went to a mult library manager for iphoto would that cure the apparent incongruent data retrieval problem in iphoto 11 regarding 13,346 phantom photos that will not securely delete?
Are there any other possible solutions out there?

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your

NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Can't rename or delete folders because thumbs.db is accessed / locked

    Hy techguys!
I have a problem deleteing or renaming folders on a network share.
When I look at the opened files on the Server I noticed that the Thumbs.db in the folder is opened by a user.
But the User have already closed the folder.
If i disconnect the Session on the Server the folder can be renamed or deleted.
The other way is to wait and the Session will close automatically. This lasts between minutes to houres?
Anyone an Idea why the connection to the thumbs.db were not closed?
    Thanks
    Stefan

I want to delete a file off a thumb drive but get error 1407 which won't let me delete or trash the file.  What do I do?

Hmmm, what Format is the Thumb drive?
    In the Mac/AFP world...

Is there perhaps a colon or Backslash, or slash in the filename?
