Deleting two years of sent messages

How do I delete two years of Sent messages?  I do NOT want to delete the messages one by one.  I want to delete a large number of messages (maybe a thousand or so) all at one time.

You can do this one of two ways:
Actually delete them for good--Select them with Shift-Click to grab a range of many all in one group, hit the Delete key, then go to the Trash icon in Mail, the select all and then Delete key again.
You could archive them for later reference--Create a folder to archive them somewhere in the Finder and have that folder visible from Mail; Shift-click to select the whole range of mails you desire; drag them into the folder you just created. Then delete them from the Sent folder as above.

  • Sent messages help!?

I have two copies of sent messages on Nokia PC Suite. I want to make those two backups (sent messages only) merge together. However I found that to be impossible. I also tried to use Nokia Communication Center, by copying the sent messages to draft then exporting it. Then I restored the other backup, and did the same thing, later one I added them two sent messages together in drafts, however i cant copy/import from drafts to sent messages folder.
How can i add them two sent messages backups together?
    Thanks,
    Kawa

You can't merge the backups, but what you could do is export them to a CSV file using Communication Centre in PC Suite, copy/paste them into a single document, then import them back into the phone. then you could make a complete backup of all of the messages if that's what you aim to do.
If the messages in your phone are not the same ones included in the backup, then make a backup of them to protect.
Now remove those messages and remove the lmessages from one of the old backup files to the phone.
Go to Communication Centre and select the folder you want, then go Edit>Select All, then File>Expor. Choose a filename and make sure that CSV is selected as the file format.
No delete those messages from the phone, and restoremessages from the other oldbackup to the phone and repeat the same process. You can then open both files in a CSV-compatibleprogram such as Excel, and copy/paste into a single document which you save; making sure to preserve the CSV format. You might want to sort the file into order by the date columne so you can check if there are any messages that existed in both backups - delete any duplicated lines and save again (if using Excel, sort by selecting Sort from the Data menu).
Now delete messages from the phone, go to Communication Centre again and select File>Import, search for the new file and select it.
This is fiddly to do, but it's a handy way to merge two lots of message data.

  • Sent messages only appear in the sent folder after restarting Thunderbird

Hi, my problem is that sent messages do not appear in the sent folder unless I restart Thunderbird. I have the sent 'copies' box de-checked as if not although it syncs I end up with two copies (of sent messages).
I am using Thunderbird 31.2.0 on OSX Yosemite connecting via IMAP to ZOHO mail with STARTTLS on 587 for SMTP.
Hope you can advise, I've tried SSL/TLS on 465 also and it is the same. It's a bit of an inconvenience not being able to view the sent messages.
    Many thanks

Interesting to know (the RFC violation) but as you say, perhaps not relevant as such, although if ZOHO wasn't auto-placing a copy in sent then I could check the 'place a copy in' option and it would work ok.
Anyhow, I tried your recommendations and yes, I use both an Android and an iPad to also check my mail but with both disconnected from Wi-Fi the problem still persists. There are a few warnings being reported in the TB error console on the Mac but they just relate to 'mso-table-lspace' for my INBOX.
And for info in Thunderbird on my Ubuntu laptop the problem is exactly the same -
'Place a copy' checked - Messages instantly appear in the sent folder but there are two copies.
'Place a copy' de-checked/Cached connections = 5 - Messages only appear in the sent folder after restarting Thunderbird
'Place a copy' de-checked/Cached connections = 1 - Messages appear in the sent folder on clicking out of the folder and back in.
On Ubuntu there is nothing at all in the error console.
I can work with how things are at this stage as I don't live in the sent folder (rather the inbox), and when you click into it (with the connections cache at 1) the messages do appear, so I suppose that's actually ok.

  • Two copies of sent mail appearing in sent box

Hi, how do I get help from microsoft?? I need help with outlook sending two copies of outgoing mail to me sent box. One copy inly is delivered to recipients.

    Hi,
If you are using IMAP accounts, Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013 save a sent message in the IMAP account's Sent message folder and your IMAP mail provider may also save a copy. Therefore, it results that two messages are listed in the Sent Items folder every
    time you send a message.
To resolve the issue, please follow Clark Kent’s suggestion to
choose the option for Do not save copies of sent items and send a test message to see if the problem persists. For more information about this issue, please refer to the following article:

  • Copy of sent messages?

Is it possible to set up Mail to keep a second copy of a sent message, other than the one in the "Sent" folder? Specifically, I'd like to have a second copy placed into a separate folder. There are other family members who use Mail and who inadvertently delete some of my sent messages when deleting their own, before I've had a chance to go into the Sent folder and manually move the ones I want to keep.
While I know Mail rules don't apply to outgoing mail, I was hoping maybe there was another way to tell it keep a secondary copy of sent messages.
If not, is there anyway to retrieve sent messages if they have been deleted (and also deleted from the Trash folder), other than software like FileSalvage?
    Thanks

Thanks for the input....I don't think that's the right solution for me at this point, but I appreciate the advice.
How about creating a separate computer login/user
account for each family member that uses your
computer so no one else accesses your messages or
email accounts or other any data stored in your Home
    folder/directory?
Besides a Smart Mailbox (which is not an actual
mailbox), there is no way that I'm aware of to keep a
2nd copy of sent messages in a separate mailbox and
even if possible, what will prevent other family
members from deleting messages from this 2nd mailbox
    also?
Separate computer login accounts without admin
privileges and disabling automatic login is your
    answer.

  • Is there a way to sync old sent messages from an online server into Mail?

When I got my new Mac, I already had several years of sent messages stored on an online server (Gmail). Is there any way to get these messages into the Sent mailbox in Mail?

You can set up your Gmail account in Mail as an IMAP account. Once done, you can view them in Mail or copy them to any folder on your Mac.

  • Ahhh Renamed Mailbox and all Sent Messages GONE!

I have years of sent messages I need to get back to now suddenly gone after I renamed my mailbox in Accounts. I NEED them back, and can't find them anywhere on my computer, or through my webmail. All I wanted to do was rename it a little to make selecting the right mailbox a little easier, I had no idea this would happen (and it shouldn't). HELP!

Alright, false alarm, kind of. It turns out for some reason all of my sent messages randomly went to another sent account, go figure. They are all there, I just had to manually move them back (thank god for rules!) Can you just make this work like it should Apple?
However, I am still seeing something which is kind of weird. Hundreds of my messages from several different accounts are reading sent dates before the accounts were even open. Why is this happening? Thanks.

  • Sent Messages deleted?

I had nearly two years' worth of sent messages saved in Mail. Today I noticed that all of them up to about two days ago were gone. They are still on the server, but they have, for some reason, disappeared from the Mail app, which is really frustrating because the online email client isn't nice and searchable like a computer.
Is this a problem of Mail or the account type or what? I deleted the account and re-added it to no avail (I'd done this a few times in the past since getting my Mac, and the Sent items have always replenished themselves). What should I do?

    Neil,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
This is issue, as you are experiencing it, and with the message about not being downloaded, is a result of an indexing problem. You need to use Rebuild on the Sent mailbox. If more than one account, open the Sent mailbox for each separate account. Click on Mailbox in the menubar, and choose Rebuild.
Wait patiently for Mail to complete the Rebuild (which is rebuilding the index) and be aware that briefly all messages will disappear, before reappearing. See:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/3.0/en/10047.html
The comment about fast internet connection would really only apply to IMAP style accounts.
Btw, what version of OSX are you running? You have posted in the forum for Mail in Leopard, but your info says you are running 10.3 (Panther)?

  • 755p treo...phone's email "gets" messages from two years ago...super old mail...how can I get my newer messages?

I've got a Treo 755p...and I'm happy with it, except email has never worked right.  When I connect to my gmail account to "get" messages, all it downloads are 350 messages from the year 2008.  I've got to keep downloading, and deleteing 350 messages at a time which are two years old.  What can I do with the phone or at gmail to "get" the more recent mail.  It seems there must be a way to eliminate these old messages and concentrate on newer messages.
Thanks for the help, I appreciate it and do enjoy the phone.  I've got a wireless keyboard coming and that seems like an awesome accessory.  Thanks again!!
Post relates to: Treo 755p (Sprint)

I feel your pain. I awoke this morning to check my text messages on my iPhone (I'm away working in Norway) only to notice a text my girlfriend sent over the night. The title bar over the message listed her Italian mobile number instead of her name. I thought that odd, only to realize that virtually all of my contacts have disappeared from the iCloud. Even more strange, there appears to be no order, rhyme nor reason, or any form of sense as to what has been deleted. If this (and a few other issues I have with post-Jobs Apple) is indicative of Apple's trajectory, they're not going to be around long. I'm beyond ******-off over this and I'll be thinking very hard about buying Apple products in the future.

  • Two years ago before my computer was stolen I sent everything to my cloud I now have a new computer how do I access my cloud and everything I saved there?

two years ago before my computer was stolen I sent everything to my cloud I now have a new computer how do I access my cloud and everything I saved there?

I assume you mean you saved it to the MobileMe iDisk - you were a paid subscriber to this? MobileMe closed last August (after a year's worth of warning emails and online notices) and if you didn't retrieve your files from the iDisk they have been deleted and are not recoverable by any means. There is no equivalent facility in iCloud.

  • Iphone deletes sent messages on my mac

Hi guys - I have searched on this subject but to no avail.
When I sync my iPhone with my mac, it deletes all my messages from my Sent Folder on both my Mac and .mac and only keeps the ones on my iPhone (approx 34 messages)
This means if I want to search for an old email that I have sent from my Mac - I cannot find it which could be disastrous!
Is there anyway that I can set it so it doesn't delete messages from my mac or do I just have to turn off syncing mail?

I am sure that your iPhone has absolutely nothing to do with this. Your iPhone and iTunes does not sync messages in Mail. All that is sync'd is simply the account information (name, type, password).
What is more likely happening, is that you have set Mail to not retain sent messages locally, and the server side with sent messages to be auto deleted once sent, or upon quitting Mail. Or you have set up IMAP like settings, in that a deletion on one client (either Mail or iPhone) deletes the message from the server
You only need to sync your Mail accounts one time, then you can turn it off. You would turn it back on, when you modify account settings in Mail, add a new account that you also want on your phone, and you simply don't want to double enter that information again on the iPhone.

  • After upgrading to iOS 5 I have lost all my sent messages'all my deleted messages have returned ,2 of which I also can't delete!

After upgrading to ios5 all my sent messages disappeared,my deleted messages returned,a couple of which I also cannot delete!Anyone any ideas?I am thinking I should have stayed with ios4,as ios5 seems to be pitched at iPad 2 users.

Thanks for the clarification.    Yes, I do access my email from 2 different sources.
FYI, I use the POP mailserver as I need most of the information to be loaded onto my PC while on a plane / not connected to the interenet.
The primary use of mail on my iPhone is to be available as much as possible - even when I'm away from my office.
Thanks again for your help.   I'll start deleting them in segments of 100.......

  • How can I retrieve deleted Mail inbox mail messages and sent messages?

I moved location and found (once again) that I could not send messages. In the past I have moved between Apple support and BT support to fix the problem. This time the BT IT technical support guy took over the screen, created a new account, made sure I could send messages and said goodbye.
In fixing the problem he deleted my existing BT Email Account and along with it 8 months worth of email history. I had backups to 5th April and hose are now restored but missing form 5th April to yesterday. With my old PC I could always retrieve stuff I'd deleted (as it never really disappeared from the computer)
Does anyone know if my deleted email box contents are still siting hidden somewhere on my laptop and if so how I can get them back? (I've only just started using Macs so still very green!)
    Cheers
    ZoeG

    Zoe,
Welcome to the Discussions, and to Macs.
Each time you remove an email account there is a warning that the mailboxes associated with that account will be lost -- that is a very accurate message, and they no longer exist. The BT tech was simply clueless, but ought not to have been so cavalier!
Any messages that remain on the server, however, can again be downloaded -- are you able to view the POP server to see what remains on it? The Sent messages would not be there, of course.

  • Old sent messages from 2 years ago are missing!

I've been using Apple Mail for years, never reallyneeded to go back for any reason. But I'm now searching for a message I sent back 2 years ago. Although it seems that my sent items only go back to just over a year! I always assumed that would remain there until I files them. Does anyone know how I can retrieve my old sent messages?

I would try the Rebuild command. Your mail database may have been messed up.

  • Sent messages re-appearing from years ago.

Today I checked for something I sent over the weekend in my Sent items in the Mail client on my Mac, and discovered that a lot of emails I sent over a year ago (up to 3 years ago) have magically appeared in my sent mail as having been sent only a couple of days ago.
This means that if I look at 'today' I have about 50 sent messages, when in reality I have only sent about 15, the other 30 or so being made up from messages I sent on this day over the past 3 years.
Any ideas on how to fix?? I've tried re-building the mailbox with no luck.
    Thanks
