Deleting User Account and associated files

How can I delete a user and the accounts associated files and documents ONLY for that user account?

Thanks for the speedy responses.  No, I'm not trying to restrict users.  I am selling my iMac and wanted to leave the programs in tact for the new user and just wipe everything off that is associated with me.  I have MS Office Suite on the iMac and offered to leave it there for the person I'm selling to since I don't use it anymore anyway.  I think in deleting my user account, I lost the Office Suite.  I'm just in the middle of it all right now so not 100% sure.  Thanks so much for your good help.

  • Creating a new user account and transferring files from old account

I am now having more problems than I can handle with my Leopard installation...problems such as applications that refuse quit no matter what ~ even after attempting force quit them and/or attempting to "sudo kill -9 PID", and now that I am having problems with Adobe Lightroom not even being able to remain open on my user account for more than 10 seconds max before it crashes without provocation (yet runs fine on a troubleshooting account I created on the same machine), I would now like to create a new user account on my MacPro Leopard 10.5.6 and transfer my files from the previous (problematic) user account, but I've never done so in the past...
Can someone give me a basic rundown of how to go about doing this as a means of troubleshooting my current sickly user account (and if you could also please let me know which files I should avoid restoring to the newly created user account so that I don't screw that one up as well, I would appreciate it)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

While logged into the troubleshooting account (assuming that it's an admin account—if not create a new one and log into it), backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • Deleting user account and their /home directory

    hi,
I'm a parent volunteer helping to admin a mac lab at my son's K-5 public school. The lab is running o/s 10.5 server on a mini with about 30 imacs as clients.
I noticed that when I delete a user in workgroup admin, the user's home directory is not deleted at the same time. Is there a way to force the home directory of a user to be deleted at the same time a user is deleted. Its extremely tedious to have to delete the home directories manually.
This question was previously posted under Open Directory forum, but I've not received any replies so I thought I would try here. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Workgroup Manager only deletes the user record in Open Directory. There is no known preference that I know of that will delete their data (the home folder) at the same time.

  • What exactly happens to my apps and settings when i create a new user account, and delete all the other user accounts?

Such apps and settings that apply to icloud, appstore, and itunes. I know the apps will still be in the new account and any other purchased apps will be in the appstore for re-download. But what will happen I delete user accounts and choose not to save any folders or files of the soon to be deleted user accound? I don't have a disk to do a clean install and I'm trying to give my super old macbook pro to a friend and I want to make sure the laptop is his and everything of mine is gone. Will erasing free space do that trick?

If it is not installed in HD>Applications folder and installed in a user account then it's gone with the user account. It's that simple.

  • New Macbook Air setup problem with deleting user account

I recently changed from a MBP to a MBA and upon completing my migration data from old mac to new one I had an extra user account. So I have my admin account and a guest account and a third account that I don't want. Upon trying to delete this account it show "deleting user account and home folder" but it has been doing this for more than an hour therefore it will not let me exit system preferences. Any help on this?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "need configuration data ... " However, if both computers are on your network then you should be able to synchronize various files or folders using backup software. However, to start you will need to enable File Sharing on one of the computers.
For help with this select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu. Search for "file sharing." You should find several links on how to configure it on your computer. Also see Mac 101- File sharing and Tutorial- File sharing in OS X - MacFixIt.
Once file sharing is set up you can then try a backup utility to do the synching. Most backup utilities not only do backups but can also be configured to synchronize files and/or folders. Here are some possibilities:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    1. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    2. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    3. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    4. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    5. Data Backup (Commercial)
    6. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    7. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
    8. SyncTwoFolders (Freeware)
9, Data Lore (Commercial - exclusively for network file transfers over Bonjour.)
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Hope this helps get you started.

  • Multiple User Accounts and Migrating from a hard drive from  MacBook

After spilling a drink on my old MacBook, which was running a current version of Snow Leopard, I had to pull out my hard drive and migrate my settings and all to a new MacBook Pro. When I first started I didn’t use the set up assistant because I didn’t have a fire wire connection and didn’t realize it was still possible with a USB connection. So I set up a new user account and started to copy files. (ie music, pictures, ect) I then realized I had no idea what I was doing and discovered the Migration Assistant. I ran that and it was great. Everything worked. Problem being, it set up a new user account and duplicated everything I had copied. So now I had 60+GB of duplicated files. Is it possible to remove the bad user account and all files copied into that account? Or should I reset to Manufactures setting? Is that possible?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Sure. Just log on with an account you're going to keep (preferably an Admin account), go to +System Preferences > Accounts+ and select and delete the one in question. You'll get a prompt that allows you to delete the home folder along with it.

  • Deleting a User Account and All the Files

Hello , I would like to delete my daughters user account and everything in it to Free Up much needed hard drive space that it is taking up because the user now has their own Macbook Pro.
I am the administrator and I am tringy to delete her account using system preferences , but I just get both the spinning progress circle and the dreaded spinning beach ball at the same time which just keeps spinning ... on and on and on .. after I go through the prompts asking me if I really want to delete the account.
    Any help ?

Yeah but OSX is strange, you need lots if free space to delete files, you need more free space for more memory, you need more free space even for a larger hard drive!
    That should be enough though.
Go to the Users folder and do a Get info on her folder, what size is it?
Maybe try deleting her Documents folder ther instead of in her account, does that work?

  • AUDIT action (create, delete, privilege escalation, set and change password from users account and group) users and admins in Solaris 10

    Hello.
in Solaris 10 i need auditing process create, delete, privilege escalation, set and change password and etc... from users account and group.
    I set settings:
    in file syslog.conf:
    *.info;mail.none;cron.none;audit.notice            @IP-Remote-syslog-server-SIEM
    in file   /etc/security/audit_control:
    dir:/var/audit
    flags:lo,ad,ex,cc,am,no,fc,fd
    minfree:20
    naflags:lo
    plugin:name=audit_syslog.so;p_flags=lo,ad,ex,cc,am,no
    in file   /etc/security/audit_user:
    root:lo,ad:no
Now I see in the logs only the fact of a connection via SSH and run processes on behalf of users. Creation. delete users, change passwords for some reason do not is logged.
Many users. For each individual write permissions in the file /etc/security/audit_user not possible, it is likely to forget any new user (or there is a possibility in this file one line to describe the audits for all accounts?)
    Where is the mistake?

You are most likely hitting Bug 15779000 user/role/groupadd/mod/del don't audit their use.
And the fix is only available in S11.2.

  • I deleted an user account and need to recover an iPhoto library + albums

I deleted a user - and didn't realize that my main iPhoto Library belonged to that user. I want to somehow recover the photos AND albums so that I can import them into another user's iPhoto without having to sift thru thousands of photos to repiclate the original albums.
I am both users - I just run two accounts on the same computer. I have almost all of the photos in my other user account but not my last vacation nor any album information. So I'm currently stuck with 80% of my photos and no album information until I figure this out.
The deleted user account is present and I can get a disk image of it. I just don't know how to procede. I tried dropping the album xtml file into iPhoto but that didn't work. (D'uh) Is there a fix for this?
    TIA

Hi Brooks, The right way to do it is to import the photos from within iPhoto. iPhoto doesn't like it when you drop stuff in from within Finder. Ditto iTunes.
    Open iPhoto>File>Import to library...
Navigate to the albums in the deleted user folder, click 'Import'.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to recover deleted account and its files ?

I have 2 accounts on my iMac and deleted accidentally one of the accounts and its files. Since both accounts are backed up via time machine, can I recover the deleted account?
I tried to find it on time machine but with no success. Could someone help how to trace the deleted account on time machine?
    Many thanks
    Tom

+I have 2 accounts on my iMac and deleted accidentally one of the accounts and its files.+
In your admin account, go into the Accounts preference pane and recreate the account, if you deleted it from the list. If you didn't delete it, do so now and then create it again. That will create a new home folder for the user. Then log in as that user and restore the files.
