Deleting Virtual Copies From Library, Burning Collections & Part of Library

Hello! I am new to this software; I have LR 2.0
From the library, I selected/highlighted the photos that I wanted to put into a new collection, then clicked the plus symbol above "Collections." I was then asked if, when putting the selected photos into that collection, I wanted to make a virtual copy in the library. I wasn't exactly sure what this meant, so I checked the box. Now, obviously, I have duplicates of all of my selected photos in my library. My collections folder turned out just how I wanted. However, I would prefer not to have a cluttered library. Is there a way to delete the virtual copies without removing them from my collection?
Also, I plan on burning a disc for a client. I want to include the entire photoshoot (what's in the library) but I would also like to have a sub-folder on the CDROM of my selected favorites/best (which remain in the collection.) How can I do this? Do I export the collection folder separately?
Thank you!

  • Can you retrieve deleted virtual copies from Lightroom?

    Hello,
I removed a catalog from LR3 and re-imported it and my develop settings are intact however, my virtual copies are all missing. Is there a way to get those copies re-imported back into LR or could they be in a cache file somewhere on my computer?
    Help!!!

That depends on your OS and/or if you did change the defaults.

  • (Finding and) deleting virtual copies

    Hi.
Somehow I have managed to create virtual copies of 1000 or so photos. This happened (I believe) while trying to clean up a collection folder. So what I want to do now, is to sort out - and isolate? - the virtual copies created accidently. I tried using Library Filter/Virtual Copies and the sorting by edit time, but still it seems it will take some time to find the ones that were made virtual copies by intent and those which weren't. As I also have done quite a lot of editing work prior to this accident, I'd rather not go back to a previous back-up.
So, to sum it up: what is the best way to find only the virtual copies created since, let's say 10 o'clock this morning?
    Thanks in advance,
    ole k

I may be a bit slow, but I still don't quite get this: LR  is able to sort (in Smart Collection) by Added Order, but there is no way of seeing when the VC was actually created?
Please also see my last question rgd. what I should put in the box next to "Contains". (o or 0 or nothing?). Whenever I make a VC, in the metadata list i t will be called "Copy 1". This means that my smart collection will include both the VCs that I've made intentionally and those made by mistake, right - I mean as long as it's got "Copy #" in the name box? In case, I can't quite make the number of files listed match with what I'd expect to find there, but if you suggest that using this method and then sort descending (why not ascending?) and then deleting, I'll trust you and do just that.
BTW, you (John) were absolutely right about the source of this confusion, I had - of some reason - checked the box next to Create Virtual Copy in the Create Collection menu. Needless to say, it is no longer checked . . . . .

  • Trouble with share/burn for part of library

Trying to use the share/burn command.  I select parts of the library I want to back up, but IPhoto thinks I want to burn the entire library and says there is insufficient space on the target DVD.  I select the year by ticking the corresponding box which turns blue.  I've done this before without difficulty.
    Using iPhoto 6, OS10.6.8

Also how many photos are in the year's selection to be burned?  The resulting library that is burned will be larger than just the size of the photos selected.  It will include all edited versions, database files, and other files the library requires.  It can get over the size allotted for the disk.  For a DVD I try to limit the size of the selected photos to 4 GB or less.
Unless you plan to never upgrade to iPhoto 9 (11) or later I'd give some serious thought to what Terence has to say.  To be able to move on up the chain at some time in the future to the latest version of iPhoto and Mac I'd get an external HD formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and copy the entire library to it.  You can keep it updated with backup software that does incremental backups, i.e. copying only those new or modified file to the EHD.  Three such apps are Synk, Synk Pro and ChronoSync.

  • I have an iPad 2 and i wish to delete photos from the moments/collections part but the trash can is blanked out??

As it states above i have an ipad 2 where over the years its had photos put onto it from various devices, i now wish to delete a few but it wont allow me to do so, does anyone know how to solve my issue? i have tried connectin to my macbook pro but cant find the images.

connect to the mac.  open i photo.  the pad will show up in the left navigation pane.  Import all of the pictures from the pad to the mac. Then resync using itunes, selecting only the picture you want back on the pad to be there.  You can make those selections in the photos tab.
If you then want to clean them off your mac, just delete them.
The deal is, you cannot delete synced picture on the pad, you need to 'replace' them via a new sync.

  • Deleting a font from the favorites collection (in Mail)

This is certainly something I can live with if I have to but while I can easily add fonts to my "favorites" collection I see NO way to get rid of them. None. Going to "add to favorites" does not give the option to remove from favorites. As usual, Apple Help is no help
    dual 2.3 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   8 gig RA<</span>

    Hi Chris,
Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I didn't explain the situation properly. When in Mail, if I access Fonts (Apple T) I see, in the Collection area, a list of 12 Collections, beginning with "All Fonts" and ending with "Web". Numbers 2&3, between "All Fonts" and "Chinese", are "Favorites" and "Recently Used". There are several interesting things to note about these two Collections (in addition to the problem I first described). For one thing, if I select either of them then "Family" becomes the only category to the right ("Typeface" goes away). That makes sense, I suppose. Also, if I select either of them the "-" option goes away, so those two Collections are not deleteable. If I select "Recently Used" there is never anything in it and, finally, if I go to "Manage Fonts" those two Collections, Favorites and Recently Used, are not seen.
So, I now have three fonts in that "Favorites" Collection, one of which is, in fact, my favorite and two of which are not. There is no way to remove the two non-favorites from that dialogue box. They will not drag anywhere and "Add Fonts" option does simply that. There is no option to remove. If I go to "Manage Fonts" the "Favorites" (and the "Recently Used") Collection is not seen. If I go to ~/Library/Fonts/ that's all there are-fonts. If I go to ~/Library/FontCollections/ then I see nine collections (Chinese through Web) plus one named "com.apple.Favorites.collection". Sounds as though we're getting close! But, sadly, these aren't folders, they're Collections. If I try to open on it tries to open with Adobe Bridge which is less than helpful.
Do you have any other thoughts? As I said, I can live (long and prosperously) with this. It just isn't the way it should be.
    Thanks,
    gerard

  • How do I deleter a keyword from a keyword collection?

When I remove the keyword from all clips, it still appears on the keyword collection list under the event in the event list in the left hand column.  How can I get delete the keyword entirely from the list of keywords.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I'm going off topic here a bit, but I want to address the awkward termonolgy used in FCPX, of which this is a perfect example. A single word should not be called a collection, I can understand how desert56 had difficulty here, I reacted the same way. If something is a collection, it's more than one thing, calling a single item a collection makes no sense, it should be called a keyword IN the collection.
As well, when I started using FCPX a few weeks ago, my first encounter with Events and Projects caused me to stumble quite bit because those two words are often used interchageably in day to day conversation. It's especially confusing when I'm used to the old Final Cut terminology of bins and timeline. So I just call the Events the raw or original footage and the Projects the timeline or edited footage when I explain FCPX to anyone. If Apple used better labels for these items, it would be easier to get started in FCPX.

  • How to Delete certain rows from table view collection

    Hi Experts,
I need to display result on the basis of certain process type. So i have used code like below.
           lv_iterator =   me->typed_context->searchresult->collection_wrapper->get_iterator( ).
           lv_entity = lv_iterator->get_first( ).
           WHILE lv_entity IS BOUND.
             CLEAR:lv_object.
             lv_object = lv_entity->get_property_as_string( iv_attr_name = 'PROCESS_TYPE' ).
             IF lv_object <> 'XXX'.
               lr_entity ?= lv_entity.
              me->typed_context->searchresult->collection_wrapper->remove( lv_entity ).
              lr_entity->delete( ).
             ENDIF.
             lv_entity = lv_iterator->get_next( ).
           ENDWHILE.
But only some of the entities from the collection are getting removed. Still some wrong entities exists which i cant even able to delete it by using ,
              me->typed_context->searchresult->collection_wrapper->remove( lv_entity ).
              lr_entity->delete( ).
    Am i missing anything here?
    Regards,
    Santhosh

    Hi Santhosh,
Maybe that is happening because you're removing elements from an object (collection_wrapper) inside your loop.
Can you try to create an collection wrapper copy by using GET_COPY method, and then use and loop the iterator on your copied object, and remove the unwanted entities on your main object?
    Kind regards,
    Garcia

  • Deleting a virtual copy from a collection

    Hi!
I just tried to implement a workflow based on collections and sometimes virtual copies instead of folders. But I ran into a problem quickly: I found no way to delete a virtual copy directly from a collection. Here is what I tried to do:
    - packing each shooting in a separate folder (like before)
    - creating a new Collection Set for this shooting and inside this one Collection "all" where I put all photos in
    - creating other Collections for the tasks that I need e.g. "print", "blog", "photobook for parents", ...
Then my idea was to use only virtual copies in these task-Collections. Creating the copies and working with them works great, as I expected. Only one little problem came out:
    - When I look to the old folder, all virtual copies are shown there -- and counted. So the displayed number of photos is nearly useless to me. Hasn't that been different in LR1 or 2?! Is there a way to change this behaviour?
But this is not the main problem. The main problem is:
    - When I decide not to use a photo from a task (which is removing the virtual copy from the collection), I found no way to *delete* the virtual copy. It is only *removed* from the collection. So I have lots of unused dead virtual copies in the original folder (which makes the displayed number even more useless).
I found one complicate workaround: Not deleting the virtual copy, but marking it with "x" as "abgelehnt" (forgot the english word, sorry :-) and later deleting all marked photos.
But even if I try hard, I will forget this sometimes.
So is there at least a way to show all virtual copies, which are not in a collection?
I found ways to either make a filter or a smart collection with only virtual copies. And I can right-click on each and look in the submenu "go to collection..." to see whether is is member of a collection. But I found no way to make this with a smart collection, because the option "not empty" is not available for the collection field.
I just found the very very complicate solution:
    - go to the folder, delete the "keep" flag from all virtual copies
    - set the "keep" flag on all photos
    - go to each collection and set the "keep" flag on all copies (or photos)
    - deleting all copies without the keep flag
This will of course also delete all virtual copies which are used in collections which I forgot to choose.
So I would like one of two things:
    - an option "delete virtual copies if removed from a collection and not member of another collection"
    - or a filter/smart collection way of showing virtual copies which are not member of any collection
At the moment, I think I will keep my old workflow which was to work with folders and snapshots. Which is also by no means free of drawbacks. Hmm, then again, when comparing: My old workflow has the risk of loosing work (when changing anything without having made a snapshow), but the new workflow has only the disadvantage of having garbage and of not knowing the number of real photos...  sounds better maybe ;-)
But maybe there is a solution for my problems?!?! Help please ;-)
    Greetings, Joerg

I found no way to delete a virtual copy directly from a collection.
    Ctrl+Alt+Chift+Delete.
Hasn't that been different in LR1 or 2?!
    No.
Is there a way to change this behaviour?
No. But if you say, you have an "all" collection in your shoot set, you can see the number there. Why judge the count from the folder? You can also use the Library Filter to filter by negatives and/or virtual copies. You can use smart collections somehow, to filter out VCs.
So is there at least a way to show all virtual copies, which are not in a collection?
Create a smart collection with the following rules:
    Copy name contains "copy"
       and
    Collection does not contain "a e u i o"
an option "delete virtual copies if removed from a collection and not member of another collection"
Use the SC above, select all, and hit Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Delete.
    - or a filter/smart collection way of showing virtual copies which are not member of any collection
    Same as above.

  • Lightroom Virtual Copies when creating publish gallery

When I create a publish gallery, I have the option of creating virtual copies. However, I notice the virtual copy stays with the original image, along with showing in the publish gallery. I would have figured the copy would only show in the publish gallery. Since I can't immediately tell where the vitual copy is linked to, it makes it confusing sometimes if I go back to re-edit. I want to isolate the photo from the orignal copy so lightroom doesn't want to republish any future edits to that file. Using lightroom 3.6. I've searched on this behavior and haven't found any helpful information.
Any suggestions on how to more effectively use this in my workflow?

With "publish gallery" you mean a collection under a Publish Service?
I have not checked with LR4.2 how this behaves, but with normal collections you should get only the virtual copies as members.
But you can remove the masters from the collection, using the filter: when in the collection, choose only master files in the filter bar, no virtual copies nor videos. Then select them all and choose simple delete: this will not remove from catalog ( as a splash-delete would do), but simply revoke their collection membership. Unlock the filter and you should have only the virtual copies left in your collection.

  • Virtual Copies Not Showing Up

So, going along and doing some editing by creating virtual copies and now new copies I make aren't showing up. It stopped doing that and now it's doing it again. I've accidentally made six virtual copies, then it stacked them together but wouldn't unstack when I right clicked. With this photo, I've created a virtual copy but in the grid it doesn't show up at all:
But other virtual copies from the other day do:
I have no idea why this happened. How do I get all my photos, including ALL virtual copies to show up in the grid? Unstacking is not an option:
    I'm so confused. Thanks.

    Nope, didn't undo afterwards.
    @ dj_paige
    >Are you in a collection when you create the virtual copy?
I was. I've done it before and no problem at all, my copies always show up. I feel really silly because I've just gone to All Photos and there are all my virtual copies. Do you know why they wouldn't show in the collection? And when I pop back and forth in collections/all photos, I lose my place. Is there a way to come back to the same place?
    Thank you very much.

  • How do I remove a few files from a burn folder?

I cannot believe I have to ask such a simple question; WHY is everyhting so difficult and complicated with Macs?! I have a DVD in the Mac; I put a number of files into the 'burn folder' which appears automatically. It tells me there are too many files to burn (I have no way of calculating the exact amount to fill the DVD, so have to use trial & error).
On a Windows PC there would be a little button saying 'remove'; you simply highlight a few folders at a time & click 'remove' - & bingo - they vanish from the folder to be burned. But it seems I have to actually send these 'alias' files to the trash in order to get them out of the burn folder? I saw another discussion on here that suggests this will delete the original files? HOW stupid and badly designed is that?!! I tried sending some to the trash but this takes forever; it does not seem to have deleted the originals, but I would like someone to confirm this please - and please can someone tell me how to delete the contents / some of the contents of a burn folder if I've made a simple mistake in what I've added to it? There HAS to be some way of getting rid of files without deleting the originals - surely?!

Pardon me for jumping in, but in my experience deleting an alias from a burn folder (or elsewhere) leaves the original intact.  I don't know why deleting the alias files takes so long on your system - on mine, a mid-2011 mini with 8GB RAM running 10.7.5, it happens pretty immediately.  I didn't initially like the Burn Folder concept, but since I've gotten used to it, it's OK - although it seems to add some unnecesary complexity if I want, for example, to move some (but not all) of the files in a folder onto a CD/DVD.
To delete aliases of files that I don't want burned, I (right-click) (control-click) (two finger tap) on the alias, then select "Move to Trash".  That's not the only way it can be done, of course.
As baltwo used it, I think "WAG" is supposed to indicate a sort of guess.  A "burning maven" would be a person with extensive knowledge of burning CDs and DVDs on a Mac.  Since none have weighed in, there must be some sort of maven convention going on.
But, yes, what you've described should work fine.  If you're super concerned about files being deleted when you delete an alias to them and don't have an up-to-date backup, just make a copy of the file (not the alias) in a different folder.
    Good luck

  • I have seven(7) podcasts on my iPhone 4 that iTunes will not delete. iTunes copies them from the phone to the library and will not  delete them from the phone when deleted from the library.

I have seven(7) podcasts on my iPhone 4 that iTunes will not delete. iTunes copies them from the phone to the library and will not delete them from the phone when deleted from the library. I have replayed the podcasts over and over and they still won't delete. Podcasts are WSJ Tech briefings.

This happens to several of my podcasts whenever an updated iOS comes out. You can delete the episode directly from the phone by swiping it from left to right. That seems to fix the issue (they drop off the phone and dont reappear on iTunes). It's as if iTunes stops tracking the play count for some shows.
    Hope this helps!

  • No warning when deleting a Master image that is linked to Virtual Copies?!

Scenario: I am trying to clear out old images to free up storage space, so I go back though thousands of images looking for weak . unrequired shots.
Problem; when dealing with "mass deletions" it is near impossible to detect which images are "Master copies" from which I have any number of Virtual Copies. And when you hit delete you might well be ruining Virtual Copies without knowing it.
Surely there is a way to warn you that pics, X, Y & Z are linked to Xcopy1, YCopy1 & Zcopy1 etc, and give you an IMAGE SPECIFIC option to see those copies and make a choice of delete the master or not? I can't beleive Adobe think its user-freindly to have people trawl through each image to check before a deletion?
I know others have expressed similar concerns, and it seems a REALLY glaring omission in an otherwise decent ptoduct.
Comments from Adobe staff more than welcome.

your responce to the observation from the above forum member is a little inelegant and harsh. It is a very good way of telling you where there are VC's of images, but as you said, your methods are your own. Doing things your way and then asking for help and then biting like that is, well up to you how you reply to those offering help and positive suggestions
I dont' expect Adobe would be so prescriptive and +1 your comment and request is a very valid one

  • Virtual copies and smart collections

    Previous answer not satisfactory.
Are virtual copies considered by LR to be the same image. Then why have them. They are different especially after I add more processing.
Therefore when i make a smart collection of aspect = square and rating is 3
all versions should show up. Not the way it seems to work   LR5.7 on Mac 10.9
Then I sort at top for 2014 and select to go into a regular collection Best squares of 2014.
As it works now it is useless because I have to rely on memory to know I made a different version based on a virtual copy.
I consider this a bug... Again read my other post today.
If all you can do in collection is just the easy filters what is the point. I can do it manually.
If this take rocket scientist to code an algorithm to figure out virtual copies are different than originals then get them on it ASAP.
This is what gets me. If you know they don't work put it right out front on the help page what IT DOESN"T DO. BE HONEST
YOU are getting paid for that. Why should a customer have to waste his time when feature is obviously deficient.

Disclaimer: I have no idea what you're talking about, nor did I read your other post today. That said, here are a couple of points which may be pertinent:
    * Virtual copies are 100% different photos (in the catalog database, in collections, etc..).
    * Internally, the main difference between a virtual copy and a real copy is that the virtual copy omits the associated file and records the associated (master) photo instead.
PS - I recommend understanding how it works before jumping to conclusions about how it doesn't..
Note: be aware that there are master-photo/virtual-copy attribute filters in the library module (which remain active in develop module..).
