Delivery question on audio...

We are delivering a digibeta of a spot we just created, I just got an email in regards of the delivery. "Please have them delievered to ** on digibeta tape with a beauty and mattes, and any effets should be on split audio tracks." What i dont' really understand is the 'any effects should be on split audio tracks.' Does anyone know what they mean by this. And have any advice on delivery? Thanks in advance.

Hello there...
your audio will have to be mixed down and exported as an AIFF, then re-imported, with what's called an M & E (music and effects) on one audio track and VO (voice over) on the other.
The term 'effects' really applies to any sync sound/ambient sound that is in your production, that accompanies what is viewed on the screen.
The delivery requirments do vary depending on the final destination ie-broadcast, corporate etc, so before i start telling you every detail of how i prep my audio for master tapes, perhaps you could give some more info.

  • Video/Audio Delivery Questions

    Hi Everyone-
I'm really excited about the possibilities of Adobe AIR,
specifically to further our vision of desktop, content rich apps
with video/audio, as well as taking that capability to digital
    signage.
    Just a few questions:
    - Does Adobe offer an 'out of the box' solution like they use
    in the Media Player?
    - How difficult is it to develop an AIR app similar to the
    examples by AOL and Yahoo?
    - What experience will developers need to create it?
    (laungauges, etc.)
Any help you can provide is appreciated. This ia a great

  • Help, basic question, no audio output?

I have a Mac Pro running latest version of Logic Pro. I'm not new to audio software (come from a Cakewalk background on the Windows platform), but I'm relatively new to Mac Pro and Logic Pro.
I seem unable to get any audio output from my setup when using a Logic Midi Track (i.e. GM Device Piano).
    My hardware:
    Mac Pro
M-Audio Axiom 25 Keyboard/controller (connected via USB to Mac Pro)
MOTU UltraLite (connected via FireWire to Mac Pro)
M-Audio ProjectMix I/O (connected via FireWire to Mac Pro)
I can bring up the Loop Browser and play loops and place loops in the Arrange view but I can't seem to use my USB/MIDI M-Audio Keyboard to generate any Audio via the Motu.
Also, I can see the Midi events in the Logic Transport Window.
If I load up garageband the M-Audio & Motu Ultralite work just fine, so I'm confused as to what I'm not doing right in Logic Pro? It must be something really basic I'm missing.
Sorry for such a basic lame question, but I'm stumped!
    Thanks, Rob.

well of course there is no official word on when an update to logic will arrive with a significant GUI overhaul. personally I hope that such a step is taken carefully.. this software is the backbone of many people's working life, so and big changes to the interface are hopefully being considered and integrated carefully.
I'd hope that a major overhaul to the logic UI won't just be cosmetic. there is a lot of legacy code left over from emagic days that do not make use of the latest OSX technology and so are not optimised. an example - look at how slow the screenset changes are. there is always a delay in response time to when you change a screenset, in some cases this can actually be slower than it was on older machines running OS9. as far as I can tell this is because it's all part of some custom graphics code in logic and doesn't make use of OSX quartz and probably not the graphics card effectively either. as a comparison, look at how incredibly responsive exposé is. it always seems to stay that responsive regardless of CPU load, so there has got to be a way to make the GUI features of logic perform just as snappily as the system ones.
same goes for the painful, annoying delay in mouse click response time, which is worse since OSX than it was under os9. a rewrite of logic's UI will hopefully sort this problem out too.
these things may seem like irrelevant nitpicks, but trust me, when you become a power user and you are cutting audio and throwing parts of your arrangement around like nobody's business, the sticky slow response of the GUI really penalises you.

  • Follow up question. importing audio

    Hello,
thanks to all that responded to my question about importing audio from itunes to FCP5. I finally got it onto my timeline, but before I did that I burned it to a cd, and used that to import it to FCP. Probably more steps than necessary, but I finally was able to get into the timeline that way. THE PROBLEM HOWEVER, is that the audio sounds scratchy, or slightly staticy (wierd word) I burned it in 48kHz and 16 bit AIFF,as you all recommended, but it still sounds crappy. Anymore suggestions?? Could disc space be the problem?
I have a huge project going and only about 10 gigs of space
    THANKS,
    Jen

When you buy a song, or a CD, you bought the right to listen to that song to your hearts content. Make as many copies as you want, but only for YOU. Your song. Play it at a party..fine.
But put marry that song with video, and you have entered new territory. To do that you need to buy additional rights. Just like you'd need to buy rights if you play music at a wedding, or play music for people to listen to when they are on HOLD at your business.
Adding it to family video is "technically" illegal. Will the FBI hunt you down...well, after the government went after a lady for owing $1.16 in taxes by siezing her house, I wouldn't be surprised.

  • Question 4 Audio Pros using MBP booted in Win XP- do Win audio apps work?

Are any of you audio pros successfully using windows audio apps on a MBP booted into Win XP?
I understand that most pros will use native Mac audio applications under Mac OS X - there are obviously plenty to handle almost any job. However... the fact is, there are some very cool audio applications available for use under Windows exclusively.
While I do currently own a PC, I have owned dozens of macs in the past (ranging from the 33MHz Quadra 950, through the PowerBook G4 1GHz & PowerMac Dual G4 1.25GHz - all while working as a professional audio engineer). With that said, my experience with virtually booting into Windows with a Mac was horrible at best - specificially when attempting to use Windows for specialized audio work. But I haven't worked on a Mac since the fall of 2004. In the past 3 years, a lot has changed with the Mac line.
If you're an audio pro who has had success using audio applications made for windows on a MacBook Pro 2.2 or 2.4GHz, would you please let us know which Windows audio application(s) you have used with success?
(Please, if you do not have direct experience using audio applications for Windows on your MacBook Pro, please refrain from posting. I'm looking for comments from professionals with first hand experience, not opinions on what might or might not work. My most sincere thanks in advance.)

It appears that you CAN use audio programs under Parallels without issue... I'm SOLD on this MBP. Thanks to oxxle from Germany for the assistance answering this question.

  • Message Queuing and Once Only Delivery Question

Okay... not looking for too detailed information as you'll lose me.  Was hoping someone could clear something up for me.  In the Websphere world Websphere uses MQ as it's queuing mechanism internally to guarantee once-only delivery of messages.  Now I know XI can integrate with MQ (or other messaging systems, JMS,etc...)but certainly XI guarantees once-only delivery without any of those components.  My question is is XI's "queuing" mechanism proprietary or can, for instance, an external system somehow "put" or "get" information to/from that "queue"?

    Shaun,
As far as my knowledge goes, I don't think external system can use the queuing mechanism of XI.

  • BOM Delivery Question

Hello! I have researching a support ticket regarding a BOM Sales Order and I am still learning about this part of the system. The issue or question I am researching is that a sales order was created with a BOM and the components had the same delivery group. The person was able to create a delivery for one of the items and do a Post Goods Issue. The person who has posed this question thought that the items had to be delivered together since they belong to the same delivery group. Is this correct? I have done several searches and am unable to find an answer.
    Thanks!

Don't need the answer to this anymore.

  • Question about Audio line-in/optical in/Audio out/optical out

I have a late 2009 27" iMac (v3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo). I note that on Apple's description of the rear ports, what I thought were simply headphone (Audio Out) and microphone (Audio In) jacks are described as:
    1. Headphone/optical digital [S/PDIF] audio out:
    "Line/Headphone output
"The headphone output is automatically selected for audio output if no external S/PDIF optical digital output device is detected. The headphone output supports a stereo data stream at bit depths of 16, 20, or 24 bits per sample and at sample rates of 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, or 96 kHz. The headphone output volume can be adjusted from 0.0 dB to -64 dB..."
The headphone output volume can be adjusted from 0.0 dB to -64 dB."
    and
    2. Audio line-in/optical in:
    "Line input
"The analog line input operates independently from all other audio input ports and is always available. The line input supports recording at bit depths of 16, 20, or 24 bits per sample and at sample rates of 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, or 96 kHz. Audio recorded from the line input is presented as a stereo data stream. You can adjust the line input gain from -16 dB to +30 dB..."
"The digital audio input has the following electrical characteristics (nominal specifications), based on input of a 1 kHz sine wave at 0 dBFS input level, 24-bit sample depth, and 44.1 kHz sample rate (unless otherwise specified below):
FSI – input sample rates: 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, or 96 kHz
    Bits per sample: 16, 20, or 24
    Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR): >130 dB
    Total harmonic distortion + noise (THD+N): <-130 dB (0.0003%)
    Sound output/digital audio output port"
While, as an Olde School audiophile guy (62, and I still have vinyl!), I generally understand the gist of all this, I'm not at all hip to what S/PDIF optical digital output and/or digital audio input can do for me. So my questions are:
    1. Can somebody please wise me up to the usage(s) of these optical inputs and outputs on the iMac?
    2. The Apple description says,under "Line/Headphone output":
"PCM: 16, 20, or 24 bits per sample at sample rates of 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, or 96 kHz
AC-3: 16 bits per sample at sample rates of 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz, 96 kHz, 176.4 kHz, or 192 kHz"
    and under "Line input
"The analog line input operates independently from all other audio input ports and is always available. The line input supports recording at bit depths of 16, 20, or 24 bits per sample and at sample rates of 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, or 96 kHz. Audio recorded from the line input is presented as a stereo data stream. You can adjust the line input gain from -16 dB to +30 dB."
How -- where -- do I adjust these bit depth and sample rates?
    Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the info. Turns out there's an even easier way to do it than using the "Audio Midi Setup": through the prefs in the latest (and probably some previous) version of VLC, which is currently Version 1.0.2 Goldeneye (Intel 64bit).
Now if we could only get full native resolution (or at least 1080p) HDMI input into the Mini-DPs of our 2560 x 1440-capable 27" iMacs and actually have it display something WAY better than 720p (half the resolution of which the 27" iMac is capable) to which Apple limited it, without having to buy a third-party $270.00 HDMI-to Mini-DPP converter and scaler. Call me crazy, but it seems kinda silly to have to pay another $300 to buy a device that will scale the 27" iMac's resolution back up to a measly 1080p, let alone its native 2560 x 1440. But, as the
As a side note, can anyone tell me -- perhaps the elusive and chimerical, but omniscient and omnipotent "communityhosts" of Apple.com -- why, in my original post in this thread, the phrase "1. Headphone/optical digital S/PDIF audio out" had the acronym "S/PDIF" stricken through, like it was a particularly egregious Anglo-Saxonism? Wikipedia defines the acronym thus: "S/PDIF is a data link layer protocol and a set of physical layer specifications for carrying digital audio signals between devices and components over either optical or electrical cable. The name stands for Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format."
If I have inadvertently broken another arcane, abstruse, and/or inscrutable canon of the rules (http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa) governing what may or not be asked or said on these avowedly "user-driven" discussions, allow me to beg for forgiveness beforehand, pleading ignorance, and ask that Apple's "community hosts" or administrators would expand upon and make very clear, in their "Apple Discussions Terms of Use," a comprehensive list of terms, subjects, lines of discussion, references to certain items, products, people, policies, etc. that are simply disallowed in the forum.
It is extremely depressing and frustrating to spend however long it takes -- and it takes ME a long time, as I have a 60-year-ingrained tendency towards verbosity -- to ask and post a question or message, only to have the message never even posted to the forum, but, without any sort of consultation with me so that I may learn from, and correct, my errors, uncaringly consigned to the illimitable void by hands to whom there is no appeal or orison.
    It seems unfair.

  • Beginner question: Two audio tracks become one - how to undo?

I know this surely is a beginners' problem, i hope for a quick reply anyway. I've imported material I had before logged with AVID Liquid, into Premiere CS4. In order to get video and audio together I had to put video and audio in a new sequence by hand. I then loaded this seqeunce into the source monitor to be able to cut my material (one video track, two audio tracks (one from a directional mic, which I don't always want))  from there. But when I paste a clip in my editing sequence I only get video plus ONE audio track in the stereo track. But I need both audio tracks because sometimes I'm going to delete one of them. So my question: How do I get video and BOTH audio tracks from one sequence to the other?
Thank you very much, you've had much patience with me with similiar questions.
    Niklas

To do what you want, you won't be able to work with the media as a single clip.  You'd have to go into the sequence with the video and two audio tracks, and pick out what you want from there instead of the Source monitor.  Make your cuts, laso the clips you're using, then do a Cut/Paste from the main sequence into the edit sequence.  Make sense?

  • Two questions about Audio Tracks

I need to make several adjustments to an audio track of an interview to remove the voice of the interviewer who would give the occasional "uh-huh" etc., sometimes overlapping (though usually not) with the interviewee.
The way I've been doing this is to pull down the db level at those points in the timeline.
    My questions:
    1. Is this the best way to do it?
    2. Regardless of the answer to question 1, why is it that sometimes when I use the pen tool in one stereo track, it will automatically affect the other at the same time, and other times I need to do each stereo track separately?
    Thanks a lot.

If you recorded with two mikes, which it sounds like you did, you really recorded two distinct tracks, and you ought to bring them in as dual mono tracks, rather than stereo. (A capture setting.) Go to the Modify pulldown and uncheck "stereo pair." Then you should be able to adjust to your heart's content.
Did you record any room tone? It's very useful to fill in the gaps you create by eliminating words. Nothing detracts from an otherwise compelling show like bad audio! If you don't have any room tone, look for a section where no one is saying anything and there is no clothing rustle, etc, FROM THE TRACK where you are making deletions. Use that to fill the holes.

  • Question Regarding Audio in MPEG-2 Compression

    Hi,
I have recently been on holiday and wish to compress some stock footage which is taking up ridiculous amounts of space on my Mac. Not only will it be saving me precious HDD space, but I wish to put it on DVD at a later date too and know that MPEG 2 is the standard for SD DVDs.
My problem is with the audio when compressing for MPEG-2. I Understand that both have to be compressed separately so I'm converting the video with a dolby soundtrack, but how do I join them again?
Alternatively, theres the option of checking a box so the audio is multiplexed however the end result always seems to be a file thats unreadable by all applications on my Mac (All software is up to date and I own the entire FCP studio)?
It's a slightly 'Noobish' question I guess, and I'm thinking I'm in the wrong section altogether now oops and maybe I should be looking up how to use DVD Studio Pro?
But any help/ Guidance would be great for an amateur like myself who's just starting out with trying to get his head around the Pro Suites.
    Thanks in Advance.

You don't need to join them again ! You must import both audio and video files in DVDSP and place them in the same track.
You must choose the right DVD enoding preset depending on your footage lenght in minutes and encode your video as MPEG2 and your audio to Dolby 2 (AC3). Giving both files same name (i.e. movie1.mpg & movie1.ac3) will help you to organize your assets in DVDSP.
Visit the DVDSP forum and use the Search feature. You'll find a lot of good info in previous posts.
    Hope that helps !

  • Question Slide Audio

I have a question slide that has audio to recite the question and then audio for the correct and incorrect explanations. However, if the user hits submit prior to the question audio finishing, the two tracks play over one another. How do I stop this?
    Thanks!

To do something like this in Captivate 5 you're probably going to need to create something in AS3, e.g. a Static Widget that does something similar to what you accomplished before in AS2.
If you already know AS2 then learning AS3 shouldn't be all that difficult for you.  There are plenty of resources on the web.

  • Three questions on audio volume, widescreen, export

    Hello,
I am in the heat of building my 40 minute slideshow imovie hd6 to idvd 08 project with some important questions.
first question: I have lots of voice audio and music loops which have been nicely edited, cleaned, normalized - all WAV files, high output, no distortion. I imported these to test into imovie then idvd and played on TV, and it was really LOUD. And some of the voices distorted a bit, and the music almost blew my speakers. I had the volume way down. Is idvd normalizing all the audio? What is happening? If I understand it, I can workaround it in Audacity. Just drop the gain a bit?
second question: I am confused about the standard vs. widescreen. I have been thinking about doing the project in widescreen, the dvds will be distributed to folks, free of charge. My format is PAL, I live in Spain. A film making friend told me that 50% of people had widescreen tv's these days. I'm confused.
third question: I want to both make a dvd with idvd and also have a master copy to give to production company who would rather have it in .mov format to make copies. What is the best way to export getting maximum quality of image and sound, but that I can transport to someone?
    thank you,
    Jenifer
ps I have crossposted to imovie hd6.

    Hi
    1.
iMovie 1 to HD 6 mainly are intended for two kind of materials (as I get it)
    • Video - StreamingDV (as from a miniDV Camera) and via FireWire
    • Audio - Except from Camera also .aiff 48kHz 16-bit
    I would
    • Convert the audio to .aiff 48kHz 16-bit
    2.
Don't really understand. Most DVD-player can be set to match the Play-back device
    eg Widescreen or CTR-TV
    3.
DVD is a final product with a very reduced quality.
I only use miniDV tape and standard 4x3 TV-video as my material and to keep Maximum
Quality I always Copy-back to tape and deliver this. Then the reciever get's
    100% of original quality.
If You use 16x9 HD then I don't know if Copy-back to tape is a working solution
for You. There are HDV-Cameras using a very similar tape as miniDV and this
    should also keep Max Quality.
