Delkin Archival Gold DVD's not reliable
I'm burning Delkin Archival Gold DVD's on my IMAC G5. All the pictures burn but the DVD pops out at the end and I get a message that the DVD is unreliable and unable to verify. But when I actually put the DVD in to read it, all of the pictures are there. This is not happening with any other DVD or CD products. Any ideas what is going on and should I be worried about the reliability of those I've already burned? Thanks. Lisa Kyle

Can't copy files to archival gold DVD-Rs
I could use a little help. For some reason I am unable to copy files from my computer to Delkin archival gold DVD-Rs. My computer has 2 Optiarc DVD RW-AD 7170As. I have no trouble copyfing files using other CDs or DVDs. The archival DVDs can be used without problems on my MacBook. Would appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks.
Well, I could probably locate another manufacturer's archival DVDs...but it just seems odd that the ones I have work just fine in my laptop but not on desk top.

I got a Mac Pro a few months ago and I am not able to burn the gold archival dvds. Do I have to buy a separate dvd burner now?

THE CASE FOR GOLD...
1. Gold is ( assumptivly ) not prone to "rot" as aluminum in laser disc and CD's
2. Gold has better ( infra-red/red light ) reflective properties.
OTHERWISE NO BASIS FOR ASSUMING GOLD DISCS ARE BETTER SUITED FOR ARCHIVING. -
Archival Gold CD-Rs worth the cost?
I was in a local photo shop yesterday and the owner was really hammering me about backing up my photos. I do quarterly backus to CD or DVD and I periodically copy my entire iPhoto library to an external drive.
He recommended Archival Gold eFilm CD-Rs. Said they are 24k gold coated and will last 300yrs. He also recommened that I print my pics from a photo lab. All of this is good advice but I wasn't sure if he was just trying to sell me stuff. The CD-Rs are over $1 each, so they aren't cheap.
Does anyone have any opinions (or facts) on if we should be spending a bit more on high quality CD-Rs? Or are these things just the same as standard CD-Rs I buy at Best Buy or CompUSA? I'm willing to spend the extra if it will help preserve my photos longer.

I've no info on those or similar discs but you might post the question over at the iDVD or DVD StudioPro forums. Some very knowledgeable professionals frequent them and will definitely have an opinion.
Generally it's reported that we can expect 30 years life expectancywith proper care. Personally, I don't think I'd go for them. I backup each years worth of photos on iDVD via slideshows and the source files on data DVD disks and then distribute to my kids. So I've got 3 copies out there at any one time. I've read that putting a copy into a safe deposit box is a good idea, controlled environment and all. Light is an enemy of discs. I'm like you I also have backups on my external HDs so do have redundancy.
One thing I did go away from was putting paper labels on disks. Although I've not had any problems with them yet, as time goes on and they dry out I don't know what to expect. I know use printable discs and print the info on it with an Epson R200. -
I have a DVD Acrobat Pro 9. I upgraded laptops and trying to install but the DVD is not readable. How can I get a new DVD or Download Acrobat Pro 1. The product is registered and I have the serial number. PS: Contacting Adobe on this issue is impossible... direct support stinks.
Download AA 9 Pro from http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html. Make a new backup for your archive. You might also take the DVD to your library to see if it is a drive problem. You might also carefully clean the DVD with water and soap (do not use anything that would scratch the surface or you have destroyed it for sure) and see if that solves the problem. This is particularly an issue if you have finger prints or other crud on the DVD. However, it could also be a bad drive as I mentioned. Hopefully the download solves your problem in any case (I would backup the download to CD and/or backup HD).

When you said in your first reply:

It would be more accurate to say that a DVD-R is it's own format, as Eric stated, and certainly can never be a DVD-Video - even if authored properly. The DVD Forum is very clear that the DVD-Video logo cannot be placed on a DVD-R format disc, because they are not the same format (you can put the DVD-R logo on a DVD-R disc). Mainly this is because these two optical formats are completely different in structure, and because only replicated discs can achieve the reliability in players (which you mentioned) required of a product bearing the DVD-Video logo - the main mass distribution format targeting consumers. That's the short of the story.
And when you said in your second reply:
"A DVD-Video is a DVD disc that contains data that conforms to the DVD-Video standard. Otherwise is wouldn't play in a DVD player. It does not matter whether the disc is burned or replicated."
Again, if the disc was burned, it's not a DVD-Video. It's one of the recordable formats (DVD+R/W is an optical format not recognized by the DVD Forum, but with similar characteristics. It's leadin can contain the DVD_ROM book type bit setting, that can trick players into thinking a replicated disc has been stuck in it, however).
And a DVD-Video disc is a replicated / manufactured disc that has certain lead-in data which a DVD-R can never emulate, because it's lead-in area is glossed over in manufacturing (to prevent bit for bit copying of manufactured DVDs) with set data in its lead-in area. So it's crucial, whether or not a disc has been burned or replicated. Again, only replicated discs can bear the DVD-Video logo.
And when you said:

As I (and Eric) mentioned, DVD-R is a format, with books specified for it by the DVD Forum. DVD+RW is also a format, but not specified by the DVD Forum. But yes, DVD-R and DVD+RW and one you forgot - DVD-ROM (replicated DVD-Video) are also all optical media.

A DVD in the slot-loading drive will not eject. My iBook reads the disk as it appears on my desktop and I can play the DVD. But as soon as I hit the eject key (F12), it makes a weird sound, like it's trying to eject, but the DVD will not eject. Can some one tell me what I can do? I have tried all the normal procedures, like holding the track pad while starting up, doing the Firmware thing at start-up, etc... All I get is the weird spinning sound, but no disk ejected. Please some one tell me what I need to do. Thank you in advance!
When open firmware doesn't work, it sounds like a hardware problem with the ejector. I would take the machine into service and let them know you tried the open firmware method.

And note that disks which have been written on by sharpie or other type of pen, or a sticky applied to them can cause the drive to age prematurely. Airport Extreme's support for streaming video NOT reliable for RealPlayer
AIRPORT EXTREME BASE STATIONS DO NOT RELIABLY PROVIDE STREAMING SUPPORT USING NORMAL TRANSPORTS FOR REALPLAYER.
Based on a problem I've had for a long time and information provided in RealPlayer OnLine Help, it appears that the Airport Extreme Base Stations do not reliably provide streaming support using normal transports for RealPlayer.
HERE'S THE REASON FOR CONCLUDING THAT
Even after updating with the latest software and firmware available for my Airport Extreme Base Station, RealPlayer will not play streaming video when my iMac is online via my Airport Extreme Base Station.
(The configuration is iMac (non-wireless) --> Ethernet cable --> Airport Extreme Base Station --> DSL modem.
Note that with that configuration I can browse the internet and play audio through RealPlayer - even though I cannot play streaming video.
In contrast, when my iMac is connected directly to my DSL modem via an Ethernet cable, then I have no trouble playing streaming video in RealPlayer.
HERE'S THE "WORK AROUND" SOLUTION I'M USING
In RealPlayer/Preferences/Transport, I selected to use HTTP transport exclusively.

Problem backing up library to DVD - disk not recognised
Hi all,
I have just tried to back up my iTunes library (approx. 7000 songs) to Sony DVD-R (for General Version 2.1 / 16X-Speed DVD-R Revision 6.0, 7 DVDs in total).
There didn't seem to be any problem with the burning process - I am using an HP Pavilion laptop (bought in 2005) with DVD R/RW.
When the backup was complete, I tried inserting the first DVD to check it had worked - however, nothing was recognised by iTunes (latest version - 7.3.2) and when I looked at the disc in Windows Explorer it appeared to be empty.
However, there was no indication when I was burning the files that there was a problem - it seemed to work perfectly.
Should I try a different brand of DVD? I tried to burn some pictures to the same kind of disk, through Windows XP, and it did not work, so it may well be that the brand of DVD is not compatible with my laptop.
I am also considering backing up using an external hard drive - is this a reliable method? Is it just a case of copying my iTunes folder over to the external drive?
Also, would it be a good idea to copy to an external drive in stages, to avoid corrupting files, or could I do it in one single step?
There is no problem with my laptop (yet!), but I am keen to back this library up as I know how quickly things can change with computers!

Hi there - my home video is taking up too much room on my computer, so I want to archive to DVD. I have 8.5 gb double layer DVDS to burn to, but even when I reduce the size of my movie to less than 8.5 gb it tells me that the movie is too large to burn. What is my best option for getting my video off the computer, but in such a way that I can easily get it back on for future editing, viewing and sharing? I anticipate that I am going to need an awful lot of DVD's if I use this method, and do not even know how small I am going to have to make the projects to get them on to DVD in any case. Any help with this will be most appreciated! Cheers Ruth
Many thanks for your reply. I have just bought my first external hard drive for the purpose of backing up. It is a Maxtor 500gb, and you can schedule automatic back up with it. Would you archive your movie files to this, or would it be better to have another separate external hard drive dedicated to the movies only? THANKS AGAIN! Ruth

Importing AVCHD video archived onto DVDs using Roxio Toast ?
Can Final Cut Express import AVCHD video that has been archived onto DVDs using Roxio Toast 10 Titanium? The video is originally shot on an AVCHD camcorder (Canon HF-10), then burned into DVDs preserving the AVCHD files using Roxio Toast Titanium. I'm just wondering if you can simply insert the DVDs and import the AVCHD files into FCE. Has anyone tried it? Does it work?
The only thing that matters is that the entire folder structure is preserved from the chip. If the software is picking out the video files then it will not work. The whole folder structure which is a data wrapper for the media is needed by FCE. It doesn't matter if you use Toast or Disk Utility to make the data disc.

Archival Grade DVDs (that actually last)
Concern has been expressed in these forums about the longevity of DVD storage. Many of us have spent considerable time converting our old VHS and 8mm family tapes to DVD for posterity (= so our grandchildren can see how we were. This is supposed to be a good thing).
I am attracted to a recent offering from Verbatim: Archival Grade DVD. Whilst they don't say so on their website:

the outlets that sell them market them as 'able to last 100 years'. None of us will be able to put that to the test, but clearly these DVDs are intended for long term secure storage. Note that they are for max 8x burn speed.
Here in the UK, where they have only recently appeared, they cost about 3-4 times as much as the standard Verbatim DVD-R, but if their claims are true, well worth it, at around £1 ($2) a disk.
I have nothing to do with Verbatim, will not receive any reward for bringing this to your attention, and no animals were hurt in the making of this post.

a few using a cheap brand DVD. Recently, I found
that my Apple or home DVD players would no longer
play the cheap brand DVD. BUT, I was able to make a
copy of it and burn it to a name brand DVD from which
I can now watch the movie.
So, if you continue to copy your DVD to brand name
DVDs every couple of years, you'll always have a good
copy. Plus, as technology advances, you can upgrade
your digital copy to the newest standard.
I still have documents I created in 1986 with my
Atari 1040 computer because I kept importing the
documents to the current technology.
Just some food for thought.
Is it not better to save to a harddisc as a -img? the new tec of new hardiscs is a constant as a archival medium and then burn with whatever media avilbel in 100 years! After several tries my redo logs are applied now. I think in my case it had to do with the tnsnames.ora. At this moment I have both database in both tnsnames.ora files using the SID and not the SERVICE_NAME.
Now I want to use DGMGRL. Adding a configuration and a stand-by database is working fine, but when I try to enable the configuration DGMGRL gives no feedback and it looks like it is hanging. The log, although says that it succeeded.
In another session 'show configuration' results in the following, confirming that the enable succeeded.
DGMGRL> show configuration
Configuration
Name: avhtest
Enabled: YES
Protection Mode: MaxPerformance
Fast-Start Failover: DISABLED
Databases:
avhtest - Primary database
avhtestls53 - Physical standby database
Current status for "avhtest":

It there anybody that experienced the same problem and/or knows the solution to this?
