Dell 24" multi-useage?

I am very happy with the 2 24" Dell monitors we have (and got a very sweet deal on).
Two things I was wondering about:
a). If I were to connect the S-Video connector from one screen to the DSR-11, would I then see a proper video signal (i.e. would that do away with an external monitor), which could be used to accurately judge the image, including colour correction?
b). If I turn the display up, how do I get OSX to recognize it? It would be cool using that layout for the Browser window.

a) No. You shouldn't consider it for two reasons... the gamma response will not be the same as what you'd see on an external video monitor, so color correction is dicey, and a computer's monitor is a progressive scan device, so monitoring interlaced video isn't going to work well at all.
However there are boxes from AJA , Matrox and Decklink that will help aleviate this. Still, a properly setup video monitor is best by far.
b) Just connect the second display to your computer's display card and OS X will see it automatically. This idea of using it as a second monitor displaying your Browser is a good one indeed. It's what most all of us do with two computer displays. Then in the display preference, there's a pop up window to turn it 90 degrees to do what you'd like.

    Am interested in hearing from anyone who has used Solaris 8 on either a Compaq or Dell server with multiple CPUs. Have a client interested in such a configuration, but am concerned that since that isn't a bundle option, that I may be helping to steer them down a difficult road.

  • Headphone output stopped working (snd-hda, Dell XPS 13)

    Update: I got it working! See my second post; I will leave this here as a reference for those with the same problem.
    My headphone output stopped working, and my integrated microphone also stopped working. The speakers work fine, though.
    AFAIK, I didn't do anything, and am quite baffled as to why this is. It's worked fine for half a year.
    I have a Dell XPS 13; it came installed with Ubuntu, I booted that, where it *does* work (just to eliminate hardware problems).
    I'm running 3.16.4-1; I also downgraded to 3.16.3, which didn't help.
    I'm testing with speaker-test and mplayer -ao alsa; I normally use PulseAudio, but eliminating that for testing seemed like a sane thing to do. It doesn't work either way.
    I also downloaded the hda_analyzer, that has a lot of options, but I'm not sure what most of them mean...
    The closest I've been able to get at the problem is this:

    This is required to get this to work in the first place, and always has worked; I tried some other options, to no avail. the enable=0,1 is to disable the HDMI output (disabling this has no effect either).

    Update: I mucked about more after making this post; I installed gnome-alsa-mixer and checked the "internal mic" option and "Auto-Mute mode" (both were off), after this my headphone output works again, and does the built-in microphone (!)
    I have no idea how I ended up in this "broken" situation, or even what this option does, or how to use it without gnome-alsa-mixer (I had to install 15 packages to get this, as I normally don't use gnome)... Sound on Linux still seems no better than when I started using it 15 years ago :-( (I spent about 5 hours on this...)

  • Choppy dvd/mpegs RS482M4 motherboard

    Newbie here, first puter I have built in about 5 years. Boy have things changed LOL. Using the RS482M4 motherboard, AMD3000 CPU and 1 gig Corsair memory Enermax'disco' case w/ 350w power supply.(for now) windowsXPsp2 OS.
    Only have two real issues.
    1. front headphone jack cant get to work (not a real big deal), this is for my 11yr old who doesnt use them anyway
    2. video is choppy, and if I drag an open window quickly across the screen it kind of leaves a 'trail' (and yes I am sober when I am doing this)
    I assigned 256m of the memory to the video in the bios, made it very marginally better. Is there a driver I should install from the disc or ????
    I have used this board for troubleshooting help (search function rocks  ) and figured i would stop lurkin and say hi....

    Depends on how you want to use it?  If you are planning on outputting to StandardTV via TV out & using it only for video/media playback & basic business apps, go with Nvidia -they have superior TVout quality, according to those in the know. The 6600 vanilla 128mb ram (non-GT model) is pretty good as they supply an HDTV component/composite adaptor for futureproofing & designed for use with Nvidia's Purevideo codecs (if you want to get that extensive). I have the MSI NX660LE in my HTPC. Not sure if there is an issue with using it in conjunction with my X1 projector. Am in the process of trying to sort it out. If you're in the States I'd go with the vanilla model for the cost.
    If you are planning on a multi-useage including some gaming, I'd go with a 256mb GT model. A great source of info is www.htpcnews.com it has it's own sub-section on video cards.

  • Will Thunderbolt allow multiple external displays?

    The news about Thunderbolt mentions the ability to "daisy chain" up to 6 devices to the port.
    Have there been any details released about the potential of driving multiple external monitors with Thunderbolt?
    I have two 24" monitors that I'd like to use instead of the laptop display, but the Mini-Displayport only allows for a single external monitor (and yes, I've tried using both Dell's Multi Monitor Hub and Matrox's DualHead2Go devices with no luck).

  • Portable Data Card errors in Windows 8 Pro with Windows Media Pack.

    I use MicroSD Cards for a lot of audio media for access in a Tablet, phone, miniPC and mp3/4 Players. 
    When I put mSDs into the PC they are not recognized by WMPlayer and therefore unavailable for sync, but if I use a usb adapter then they are***.
      I have loaded an mp3 Player plus microSD and both appear in Explorer as Drives X and Y and in WMP as Player and  mSD1 respectively.    I then withdrew the
    Card and placed it in the PC reader. The Card is now added as Z and I can still access it in WMP and make changes to it via Sync.  WMP description of the Card is identical (mSD1).
          Drive Y remains and also reloads, even when not present, with Player X.  If I remove the mp3 Player or close WMP the connection to the PC
    mounted card (Z) is lost!  
    I believe that Win 8 is probably the cause. The PC Card Reader is running the latest drivers. 
    I have reinstalled WMPack.
    My PC, a laptop Dell Vostro1510 multi boots Win XP and Vista, has no problems with WMP 11 in the other OSs because the mSD Cards show and sync without problem.
    Whatever the cause, data cards are becoming more frequent in use for music etc., on my phone or other portable device and I know I am not the only person to have this problem
    ***A very basic usb Various Format Card Adapter shows all Cards as locked or read only, whilst another SD only, with an activity LED, works OK. Both show as 
    alpha:\ + contents. Both show in WMP but properties are unchanged from File Explorer. Since I have not used the MULTI much I cannot reliably recall if it was ever any different. All mSD Cards are in an adapter to SD size and not locked.
    Note:I have tried to find a solution in Windows Community
    on the basis that WMP12 was at fault but without success, despite Barb Bowman’s efforts.

    The cause is a laptop that was only supported by Dell to Windows Vista.
    The drivers for the O2 micro card reader are the first suspect.
    The BIOS is the second.
    And finally the chipset.
    Enter device manager and uninstall the card reader. Then, right-click computer at the top and select "scan for hardware changes" to reinstall the card reader.
    Reboot the computer and enter the BIOS on start-up. Is it version A15? If not update it.
    Dell downloads
    Visit Intel and run the Intel driver update
    tool. It is ok to install the Husdawg utility. You can uninstall it when completed.
    The cards may need to be reformatted if and when you get the hardware working ok.
    It may just be the case that the notebook hardware is incompatible. Dell did not support it for Windows 7 for a reason.

    El servicio técnico (nivel Oro) llamado “Adoble Gold Technical Support”, ya no se tendrá que comprar por separado, sino que vendrá incluido sin costo adicional en el pago anual de la Plataforma DPS. Este servicio técnico permite obtener apoyo para casos o dudas acerca de los siguientes componentes de DPS “Folio Builder” (creador de .Folio), “Distribution Service” (Servicio de Distribución), “Viewer Builder Service” (Servicio de Creación de Visualizador) y “Adobe Content Viewer” (Visualizador de Adobe). Se brindará apoyo telefónico, por correo electrónico y vía Web, con disponibilidad 24 x7 (todos los días) contando con un tiempo de respuesta desde 1 hora hasta 1 día hábil dependiendo de la prioridad del asunto. Los clientes podrán especificar hasta un máximo de 4 personas como responsables técnicos que tendrán derecho a solicitar y recibir este servicio de apoyo técnico.
    Además del servicio anterior, para las cuentas que sean de nivel Enterprise exclusivamente, Adobe ofrecerá apoyo a Desarrolladores de software (Adobe Developer Support). Este soporte técnico cubrirá temas relacionados con los APIs y extensibilidad de los servicios y aplicación (Apps) que son ofrecidos a clientes nivel Enterprise (consulte descripción más abajo). Este apoyo a desarrolladores estará disponible de Lunes a Viernes. Los clientes podrán nombrar hasta un máximo de 4 personas como responsables que podrán recibir este tipo de apoyo especial.
    El paquete de arranque de DPS ahora incluye 5000 descargas (downloads) .folio en el costo anual del primer año
    Ambas versiones de DPS, la Profesional y la Enterprise, ahora incluyen sin costo adicional 5000 descargas de publicaciones en .folio válidas para usarse durante el primer año de suscripción. Una vez que esta cantidad de descargas se agote, los clientes deberán obtener más descargas mediante  la compra de un paquete de servicios de distribución (ver abajo precios)

    Adobe carga una cuota mensual fija para acceder a los servicios de DPS y para obtener actualizaciones periódicas. A esto anterior se la llama “Costo de la Plataforma” (Plattform Fee). Esta cuota incluye acceso a todos los servicios DPS y ahora incluye Soporte Técnico nivel Oro (Adobe Gold Support) y 5000 descargas de archivos .folio distribuidas a sus aplicaciones (Apps) multi .folio a partir del Servicio de Distribución de Adobe. Una vez que las 5000 descargas son agotadas, se deberá adquirir por adelantado un paquete de servicios de descargas en distintas cantidades disponibles.
    El Costo de la Plataforma es el siguiente:
    •                Para Edición Profesional Edition el costo es €4,260 por año.
    •               Para Edición Enterprise inicia desde €34,500 por año y aumenta según el tipo de licencia corporativa que se tenga.
    El Costo de la Plataforma se deberá liquidar por adelantado de forma anual.
    Adobe cobra además cuotas sobre las descargas (downloads) de archivos .folio a los dispositivos lectores soportados, estas cuotas son llamas “cuotas de servicios de distribución”, y solo son necesarias para aplicaciones (Apps) que sean del tipo multi .folio. Estas cuotas de descargas podrán ser cobradas al momento de inscripción a una nueva cuenta DPS o bien en cualquier momento posterior en la que se encuentre activa la cuenta. El servicio de distribución no es necesario para aplicaciones de un solo .folio (single .folio).     Introducción a Adobe InDesign CS5.5, y a Adobe Digital Publishing Suite (DPS)
    Adobe InDesign CS5.5 es un software que se utiliza para crear revistas, periódicos, catálogos y publicaciones empresariales  digitales y producir archivos .folio a partir de tales documentos. Para crear las publicaciones se necesita solamente Adobe InDesign CS5.5. Ahora bien, Adobe Digital Publishing Suite (DPS) es un conjunto de servicios basados en Internet y tecnología de generación de visualizadores (viewers) que permite la distribución de archivos .folio a una amplia variedad de dispositivos “Tablet”, a través de sitios de comercio de aplicaciones.   • Shop vicariously through me!!!

    There are quite a few of these "what should I buy?" posts and everyone seems to love giving their opinions so consider this:
    I'm in Japan and I'll be here at least another year. I live in a tiny apartment with a tiny desk, my Logic use has outgrown my PBG4 and I'm tired of being hamstrung by this tiny screen.
    My first instinct is to buy a Mac Pro and one of those big Dell/BenQ multi-input displays. That way Logic is all set for horsepower and display size and I can even watch movies and play Gran Turismo on a nice big screen. Trouble is, this all has to go home (USA) someday. Putting a mac pro and a 24" display through baggage on a plane makes me nervous and I wonder if shipping it is very cost-effective and/or safe.
    An imac would be a more streamlined solution and it should suffice for Logic but it's probably only a little easier to ship home and then I wouldn't have the display input options I could get with a third-party display.
    I could get a MB/MBP and a big external display but then I'd worry about outgrowing the hardware again and I'm not really sure all that will fit on my desk.
    Any suggestions?

    You can only use this BADI for customer defined fields. It will not allow you to change standard fields.

  • Dell multi button mouse

    I've attached a Dell mouse, which has left and right buttons, a track wheel, and two additional buttons which usually go back and forward in applications when pressed.
    Looking at the mouse System Preferences Help file, it shows that if I have a multi function mouse, then additional options should come up, however these have not appeared.
    Is there a way to get this mouse to work correctly? Although it's only for convenience sakes, it would still be nice to have these functions.
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    Pretty much all mice come with software for OS X to support their scroll wheels, extra buttons and such. I've been using a Logitech MX300 since the day I bought my G5. Works just ducky!

  • Multi touch pad not working Dell XPS

    The multi touch features on my touchpad are not working on Firefox 9.0.1. Dell XPS L702X with Synaptics PS/2 TouchPad. Multi touch works on all other programs, including IE. While attempting to use multitouch, for example scrolling, the icon changes to show that it is working - but it is not.

    Silly question....
    Has the trackpad been turned off by any chance? A lot of laptops come with a button you press or hold to turn the trackpad itself off (or may be a function button using the F keys)

  • Can I connect and use a Dell projection unit..several years old...with my new Macbook Pro?  do i just need an adaptor for the multi-pin plug?

    I would like to use my old Dell projection unit with my new Macbook Pro laptop, but obviously there is no such plug in the Macbook.  Is there an adaptor I can connect and make it work?  Without the old "F" keys, how do I get the Macbook to provide output to the projection unit?  I don't see an icon on a button anywhere?
    Thanks for any help...  trying to become a good Apple user.

    You have to determine what connection options are available on the projector.  You probably will need a Mini-displayport (Thunderbolt) adapter. that can accommodate the projector.

  • Query: Incetive Compensation (OIC); Multi-dimensional Rate Table Useage

    Hello,
    I have a compensation calculation scenario, where the outcome for a plan element takes the outcome of multiple preceding plan elements as factors in calculating the earnings factor. I'm trying to understand the mapping between dimensions of the rate table and data used against them.
    To elaborate :
    1.) I have plan element one which calculates the total units sold on a particular product.
    Plan Element PE1 (intermediate calculation) -
    Input = count of units from orders, with eligible products
    Output = Input
    2.) I have another plan element which calculates the revenue attainment from eligible products
    Plan Element PE2 (intermediate calculation) -
    Input = SUM (Transaction Amount) from eligible transaction (products)
    Output = same as input (output not significant here)
    Performance = (Input Expression) / Goal
    3.) This third plan element calculates commission based on the outcome of the above two plan elements
    Plan Element PE3 (commission calc) -
    Input - Expression 1 - Commission Payed from PE1 (same as output from PE1, as no rate table there)
    Input - Expression 2 - Performance from PE2
    This PE has a rate table defined on these two dimensions:
    Perf -> 0% -80 % 80 - 100 % 100% - 200%
    units
    below 100 5 % 10 % 15%
    above 100 7 % 12 % 17%
    Output - Rate Table Result * ( Fixed Amount )
    My question is, when we have specified multiple input expressions for a formula, does the engine take :
    -> outcome of the input expression(n) to be the amount used for dimension(n) and
    -> outcome of input expression (n+1) to be used as amount used for dimension(n+1)
    so on and so forth ? Is it positional mapping between input expressions and rate table dimensions?

  • How I tried fix my partitions and restore a Dell Diagnostic Partition.

    UPDATED: 2 September 2012
    UPDATE: Now that I reflect back on the incidence, I realize that the Dell Utility partition had lost its ability to boot long before I had messed up my partition table. But I realized it only when I was testing all my partitions after fixing the partition table. But as I have already written this long post, lets just keep it here for future reference of anyone else stumbling across a similar problem. Read on to know about my experience.
    RECOMMENDATION: I do not recommend trying out all the steps below as they did not completely solve the problem for me. If you need the Diagnostic Utility, download the update package from Dell's support website for your model. This package can be used to create a boot-able USB drive and/or CD/DVD. These work fine and are pretty fast also.
    Something strange happened to me and I am now reporting my experience in trying to solve it (somewhat unsuccessfully!!)
    First of all, my setup is: Dell Studio 1555 laptop. I dual boot Windows 7 and Archlinux. So here's how it went:
    After using the partitioning tool Gparted under Archlinux to resize a partition, I found a problem had occurred. The Partition was NTFS formatted and all of my data files were stored on it. The partition worked fine under Archlinux as I was able to access my files fine under it. But in Windows, although the partition was listed under Windows explorer, it wanted to format it!! When I tried to access the partition it gave an error that it was not formatted (
    The drive is not formatted, do you want to format it now?
    ). Of course, that was not right and Gparted had messed something up. I fixed that using Testdisk under Archlinux (See the Details). So now the partition problem under windows was fixed. But now another problem cropped up under Archlinux. When I booted into Archlinux and started Gparted to confirm everything was fine I saw something strange in Gparted. The whole space on my hard disk was marked as "unallocated" under Gparted. Windows and Archlinux could "see" the partitions. By this I mean that I was able to boot fine under both my OSes. And I could access all my files under all my partitions. But somehow Gparted was not able to "see" them. Gparted was reporting my whole disk to be marked as unallocated. After that I researched a lot and lots of stuff happened experimenting to fix the problem. I used a lot of utilities. But actually only one fixed the problem-fixparts from the gptfdisk package. But it seemed like a lot of work trying to get the problem fixed (See the Details).
    Now we get to the point in discussion. I was able to get my partitions back under Gparted. But I lost the Dell Diagnostics Utility partition's ability to boot up. [Actually, now that I reflect back on the incidence, I realize that the Dell Utility partition had lost its ability to boot long before I had messed up my partition table. But I realized it only when I was testing all my partition after fixing the partition table. But more on this later.] It gave an error that the partition was not found.
    So, in short: After all this restoring partitions' visibility under Gparted, I realized that the Dell Utility partition on my Studio 1555 was not booting up. To explain this, it means that when I press F-12 when starting the laptop and select Diagnostics from the menu to run the Diagnostic Utility and after running the Pre-boot System Assesment tests when I consented to boot the Diagnostic Utility partition, it gave me the error that the partition was not found. When I tried to run the "Dell 32 Bit Diagnostics (Graphical User Interface version)" update package under Windows, it resulted in a similar error: Partition not found.
    For some background on what makes the Dell Utility partition so special, please read this thread and the third post on this thread.
    WARNING: You and only you are responsible for your data. Please make a backup before performing any of the partitioning steps below.
    NOTE: Please read the entire post before actually performing the steps.
    So, to try and fix this I did the following:
    Boot into Windows 7.
    Open Disk Management under the Computer Management console (To open the Computer Management console, right click on Computer in the Start menu and select Manage).
    Reformat the Dell Diagnostic Utility partition as FAT(not FAT32). This is the first partition on the drive (marked as Healthy (OEM Partition) under the Status column). [This step may not be required, however I had done it. See Notes below.]
    UPDATE: After reading around a bit I found that these steps to format the partition might not actually be necessary. Simply changing the type of the partition (as detailed below) might also work. However as I had done that, lets just keep these steps over here.
    Reboot into a Linux distribution Live CD (I had Ubuntu 10.10). Or, If you dual boot with a Linux distribution that does not complain about the now inconsistent fstab entry, you can also boot into that distribution directly. I had to boot into Live CD to fix my /etc/fstab.
    UPDATE: After considering all the aspects from start to end I have come to a conclusion regarding the efficacy of this method on dual boot machines with Windows and Linux installed. I doubt anyone with a dual boot Windows/Linux setup would be able to boot into the Dell Diagnostic Utility even with the Utility Partition restored. This is detailed below.
    (As noted above my Archlinux install did not boot up after I had reformatted  my Dell Diagnostic Utility partition. This is because I was mounting the Dell Utility partition at boot using fstab inside Archlinux. And I was using the UUID to mount the partition. After reformatting the partition its UUID changed. So, it wouldn't mount. And because of how my fstab was setup Archlinux won't boot. So, I had to boot into a live environment to fix this. This step applied only to me. YRMV.) Fix the fstab entry.
    (This step also applied to me.) Boot into the repaired Linux Distribution.
    And open a Terminal.
    In the open terminal run fdisk on your drive, e.g.,
    fdisk /dev/sda

    Download the required Diagnostics Update Package from the Drivers Download page for your model. Got mine from here.
    Run the downloaded package under the OS you it downloaded for. That is, run the .exe on Windows. Or, if you downloaded the .bin file for Linux then first make it executable:
    chmod u+x CL1367A0.bin
    And now run it under a Linux distribution with an older version of python installed (I think <2.7). I say this because the .bin package didn't run on an updated Archlinux for me, probably because it has the latest python. I ran it from the Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD and it ran fine under that.
    On Windows, If you are not automatically prompted with an option to update your Utility Partition then you need to browse to the location where the package was extracted (for me it was C:\dell\drivers\R239866).
    Now you need to manually run the extracted file (for me it was DDDP.exe). Most probably you'll need to right-click it and run it as an Administrator. And if all went well, it will extract/update the diagnostic utilities to/on the Dell Utility Partition.
    I believe the above steps should be sufficient for someone who's lucky and who's update package is smart enough. However these steps were not sufficient for me. My "Partition not found" error was gone because I had changed the partition type. And so the update package was able to recognize the partition and extract the necessary files to it. But I was still not able to boot the utility partition. After the Pre-boot System Assessment although I no longer got the "Partition not found" error, but I was just dropped onto the GRUB boot menu prompt.
    [UPDATE: As stated above, I realize that the recovery partition had lost its ability to boot long before I had messed up my partition table. But I realized it only when I was testing all my partition after fixing the partition table. Please refer to this forum thread for further Details. I  do not think that it is possible longer to boot from the Dell Utility Parttion on my setup which has GRUB installed to the MBR. But the rest of the post documents my attempts to slove the problem without the knowledge from the forum post.]
    Anyways, it was a pain to again and again set up/update the partition and test it after waiting half an hour or so for the Pre-boot System Assessment to complete. But I was determined to solve the problem at-least partially, until next time. So I created a GRUB entry to boot the Utility partition. Assuming the partition is the first partition on the drive (which is the case here), the grub entry is simply:
    title Dell Utility
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    chainloader +1
    I tried downloading an older update package. I updated my Partition with it. And tested. Still, I was unsuccessful. I researched a little bit and found this link. Out of frustration,I decided to use brute force this time . So, the below are the steps which let me have at-least a glimpse of The Dell Diagnostic Utility booting up from the partition:
    Backup your partition table using the sfdisk command (not fdisk).
    Follow the instructions in the link I gave above (i.e., http://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/1123) and build your Utility Partition from scratch.
    Now after that when you try to boot into the OS you'll be presented with an blue bar on top. This is because the mkup batch file from the Dell Diagnostic/Drivers CD/DVD wiped your partition table and rewrote it with only one partition on it- the Dell utility partition.
    Boot into a Live environment and restore your partition table from the backup created earlier using sfdisk.
    Now boot with a Windows disc to repair your Windows boot problem. This applied to me but may not apply to you.
    Again boot into a live environment and restore GRUB to MBR.
    After a reboot press F-12 to get to the BIOS boot menu and select Diagnostics.
    Let the Pre-boot Assessment run and after its complete it will ask you to press any key to boot the Dell Utility partition. Do that.
    You'll notice your still dropped into GRUB instead of getting the Diagnostics GUI.
    Now when on GRUB prompt don't boot any other OS.
    Press any key (other than <Enter>, that is ) to stop the timer if you have one set.
    Now look carefully at the boot menu.
    Remember I told you that I had created a GRUB menu entry to boot the Dell Utility partition. Select that. And if you are lucky you might just be able boot the partition. This worked for me (finally!).
    After this initial run I was unable to run the Diagnostics GUI from the GRUB menu entry again. I haven't tried to re-run the Pre-boot Assessment and wait to see, if I'm able to boot it from there. But now, I'm satisfied that at-least the file there are in a running condition.
    Also, the update package can be used to create boot-able USB drives or boot-able CD/DVDs which can run the Diagnostics just fine. They are almost as fast as the partition (especially the USB which seems even faster). They are recommend, instead of going into this trouble to recreate the partition. That is unless you are a purist/perfectionist .
    Notes:
    At first, I panicked and tried a lot of steps that are not exactly documented above for the sake of convenience to others who might refer.
    I have thus rewritten the post in a manner to make it very general in nature as it did not become very fruitful for myself.  If you attempt to use this guide, use common sense where necessary .
    Of course, if you are trying to build a Utility partition on a bare hard drive or you're feeling adventurous, you can always follow this link .

    The file seems to create the CD/DVD/Image and USB just fine. So I used this only to create a CD image which I then wrote on a blank CD which seems to work fine. Also, I played around a bit and had some partial success in booting the partition. I've updated my original opening post with the new findings.
    Whew!! what a waste of time! Never want to do all of this again .
