DELL 2500 - freeze! v early in boot-latest kernel 'iomem', 'prefetch'

Hi everyone....! Well, a problem is an opportunity right!!? :--)
Here's the short version:
All fine on the old Dell Inspiron 2500, 1 ghz PIII intel basically UNTIL an -Syu a couple of weeks ago.
It was time to wipe the old test laptop anyways so now I've become certain that the problem is:
something about the new 2.6.28 kernel ... narrowed it down by doing an 06.08 cd base install no problems.
update JUST the kernel and what it HAd to have to do so and it freezes after about 2 seconds of the boot sequence.
Can only give partial unless someone can tell me IF there WOULD be alog file if I do a recovery boot and find it.
Normal boot gives stuff like this:
system 00:01: iomem range 0xff8000000-0xfffffff counld not be reserved
and the last line of the freeze is PREFETCH window: 0x00000030000000-0x00000037ffffff
Stuff like that... sorry i've not more though I'm typing it out.
SO:
Tried it by doing the grub thing:  acpi=off
The boot gets a LOT further... though after loading udev it says:
Code: Bad EIP value.
EIP: (and a bunch of number code)
[end trace 4661116e59009c2a ]---
note: fsck.ext2[906] exited with preempt_count 1
Warning... fsch.ext2 for device /dev/sda1 exited with signal 11
THEN there's a [fail] and then the stock FILESSYSTEM CHECK FAILED info and the option to give root password or Control-D to continue.
So I do an fsck and get the same info as above bad EIP etc. plus the stuff that was above the BAD EIP that I didn't mention earlier which is about 12 lines of weird code... weird to me that is... hehehe
Any ideas?
Figuring the new kernel doesn't like old laptops...
thanks for reading!

I've just again tried to install on the old laptop with the 2.6.28 version of the kernel (I think 2.6.27 was a problem as well)
Anyways... above I mention learing how to downgrade a couple of package....madwifi and kernel 2.6 which worked... And I think learned to ignor them with pacman so I could upgrade everything other than those two.
So... I've just tried to install the latest 2009.02 cd img hoping that the recent kernel release may have solved the kernel panic iomem and prefetch and EID and ton of other issues that rendered te laptop usless as it would not boot...
Anyhow..
I found this and by adding it to the boot string and than agter booting writing it nito the menu.lst it works great!  You probably know about hitting 'e' at the first arch boot window, slecting the first line and then hitting 'e' again.... scrolling over if need be and adding this to the line... hit return then 'b' for boot... then after it boots or installs do the menu.lst mod to write the line in permanently...
Anyways this has totally for the time solved my BIG problems...
pci=noacpi nobiospnp noapic nolapic
Here's some good stuff to go with it.

  • Can't boot latest kernel on Ivy Bridge

    Hi,
I’m trying to use Arch on my new machine. It’s a basically an Intel Core i7-3770 an Intel DZ77BH-55K motherboard.
I tried installing with the latest install media (2013.01.04), but I could not even boot with it: as soon as the kernel loads, the computers reboots. I then used Archboot 2012.10: the 3.6.2 has the same problem, but the LTS (3.0.46) boots fine, so I installed with it.
So as of now, it runs on the LTS kernel (3.0.60), but I have many troubles with graphics (small KMS console, video tearing, X freeze, reboot, etc.), and I thought using a more recent kernel would help (I have already read the wiki on Intel Graphics, and other posts).
If I remove i915 from mkinitcpio.conf and comment the line in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf, the 3.7.4 kernel can boot, but only for a few seconds and the reboots (I think it’s when the i915 module is loaded).
    Any help appreciated, thanks

  • BLACK SCREEN startup with 3 beeps, FREEZES when unplugged, Splash screen freeze, HEAT-UP TO BOOT

BLACK SCREEN startup with 3 beeps, FREEZES when power unplugged, IF IT BOOTS splash screen freezes, OVERHEATING REQUIRED TO BOOT - 0x7B, Event 41 kernel-powe
Issue: One day I unplug the power, the screen freezes and I get frozen music sound. I shut down, start up, I get 3 beeps (1 short 2 long), which indicates a Video failure according to the Thinkpad Laptop beep code list.
How I solve the issue day-to-day: I turn the heat up - I disconnect the battery and hard drive and plug in the power then turn it on. I will wait until the underneath is searing hot with a blanket blocking the fan's flow of air, I mean way hot because any cooler and it won't start. Plug stuff back in, Hard drive first, Battery second, turn off with power button hold, unplug power, replug power.
I turn it on, no beeps, it goes past the first Lenovo screen, then gives me a prompt because it "didn't shut down properly" and continue regular startup. What happens next is the Windows logo appears, and just as the animated windows logo starts to move (you see 2 small colored dots on the screen), it freezes. I see this every time, I know naturally that it means that the laptop is still too hot to go past that point, so I shut it down and try again. After about 5 - 10 tries it will go past the splash screen and into the login area, then it's all fine.
Sometimes when I unplug the power from the back by accident it will freeze. By accident I mean that the connector wiggles it's self out easily. This unplug freezing thing started happening about 1 week before the 3 beep black screen problem started rolling, so I'm putting 2 together.
    Errors:
I got a Blue Screen of Death the first time I started it up with the overheating ritual, but I never got it since. It was 0X7B. I ended up changing a setting in BIOS from AHCI to Compatibility Mode, and I passed everything without the BSOD again. I have always had it on AHCI.
I got another Blue Screen of Death about a week ago, but came as it was on already and I had been using it, and said something about disabling Cache or Shadowing in BIOS. I never got it since.
    BIOS:
Also, the time was set to 1988 or something in the BIOS.
    Event Viewer events found:
    1. Kernel-Power, Summary page.
There are critical events for a few things like Kernel-Power, Event ID 41, Task Category (63). There are 19 of them, each day 1 or 2 of them but mostly 1, so this maybe corresponds to my daily ritual.
"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
    2. Kernel-Processor-Power - Event ID 37, task category (7)
"The speed of processor 1 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report."
    3. LMS - HCMI - Event ID 2, Task Category: none
"LMS Service cannot connect to HECI driver".
I came across a very sluggish performing control panel for Nvidia before and after this problem, and I tried installing a newer version, which I had to jump through a few hoops to do, like uninstalling first, not just updating. At first it said that the driver wasnt made for the system, or that it wasnt compatible or something, which was wrong. I made it work somehow, but it was still sluggish after install. I rolled it back to an earlier driver, and now it works fine oddly. No sluggish performance / slight freeze window thing going on. No problem at all.
MSCONFIG.exe, Boot Advanced Options: I have tried twice to change this 1 setting, check box "Number of processors" and change to 2 processors, because I do have 2 processors. I have been able to change this in the past, but it does not save the setting now, and I believe this option was selected before I started having problems, and settings did not disappear then.
What could this be. The small round BIOS battery? The video card like everyone presumes? (I.E. the entire motherboard replacement), Software? The wiggly power input area? (Not enough power getting in?), Firmware of some sort? The BIOS software being wrong?

You wont get good Nvidia ones on Ebay/forumes anywhere.
I'd beg to differ on both accounts.
*61 series nVidia-based ThinkPads from late January through July of 2008 are a 50/50 shot, since the old chips were mixed with the new ones. Any machine built in August and later can be deemed "safe".
As for the forums (I don't do feebay) there are people who sell genuine, properly-tested planars. However, these do not come at bargain basement prices, and with a good reason if I may add.
    Good luck.

  • Booting the kernel freezes

    Hello,
I'm trying to install Arch Linux on an old computer (AMD Athlon 900MHz) but the system freezes at boot. All I can see on screen is:
    Loading boot/i686/vmlinuz.......
    Loading boot/i686/archiso.img.....................................ready
Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok
    Decompressing Linux... Parsing ELF... done.
    Booting the kernel
and then freezes. I've tried adding "nomodeset noacpi noapic nolapic acpi=off loglevel=7 debug" with no success and no debug information.
This computer is running a Linux 2.6.32 kernel right now and I wanted to update it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

Should I try net install or anything like that?
Are you using latest install iso?
If so, it is already net install, it only allows you to install if you have an internet connection and will install all packages from arch servers.
The specs are more than the minimum requirements, at lest for what i've been reading arrond. The only problem i see is the PATA hdd, because latest arch kernel's don't support it anymore, there is a workarround for it at least
    pcie_aspm=force
The other thing i don't know is if your VIA chipset is still supported in new kernels!

  • OS X freezes then won't boot up on restart

Recently OS X keeps suddenly freezing for no apparent reason. I would restart my computer only to have it freeze again after a few minutes up to a few hours. However now when attempting to restart OS X won't boot up, it essentially freezes when trying to load OS X. Started computer using ctrl-commmand-power and OS X would load and function normally, then freeze after a while. Now OS X won't load at all, and simply freezes when trying to boot up (freezes on Apple icon and swirl during start up).
    What do I do!?

My OS X was running fine for more than a month (I don't know why, I didn't do anything to it, one day it was just operating as normal) however now it is freezing again during start up. I booted up with the OS X install disk and repaired disk permissions, as well as repaired disk. Utilities fixed some disk permissions, and then said no repairs were needed for the disk. Ran the apple hardware test, and it found no problems. Tried to run extended diagnostics and it seems to freeze while doing that. I also ran a virus scan (with some freeware ClamXav, which made it freeze a few times before it successfully completed), and tested my memory (with freeware Rember) all of which found no problems (although I'm not sure how reliable those programs are).
Does this still seem like a hard drive issue? Or could it be something with my RAM (I have 2gb), or something else?
I just want to make sure I know what the issue is before I start pouring money into my mbp.

After resetting my backbook pro to factory settings, it freezes every time it boots up. What's the problem?

by the way, you can also try to safe boot up your mac for safe mode. maybe it can work and you can deal with problem there.
    for safe boot:
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

  • SharePoint document library, showing one version earlier than the latest in the metadata and version history...

    Hi,
We have a production site collection in which all of the document libraries seem to be showing one version earlier than
the latest. For example, if we check-in the file today, the version history shows all versions except the current. The same is true for the Date Modified and Modified by fields. This happens with site
    owners account.
This is a very strange behavior and I can not find any information on the internet. Anyone with a similar issue?

Didn't you update the system time and date, on any Sharepoint Server, or SQL Server?
Make sure all your Farm Servers (Applicational, Front-Ends and SQL) have the same date and time defined.

Anyone knows if paralels is also not comparable with the new imacs?
    http://bgr.com/2012/12/19/new-imac-early-adopters-boot-camp-259318/

It is because of the 3TB drive. Since BC needs to create a FAT volume for Windows to install to it can't do that on that large a drive, 2TB limit.
There was a post the other day how to get around this and use BC to install Windows. It has to do with Partitioning the drive to a smaller size from a Boot disc/USB thumb.

  • [Solved] Intermittent graphical issues during boot w/ kernel 3.5.3

Before, my computer booted every time, no problem. Then I updated my system from pacman and got the new kernel, and ever since then it freezes up completely during the boot process... Sometimes. Not always.
When it happens, it is during the "triggering udev events" part (where the screen resolution changes from the early boot resolution to the normal resolution at which the consoles normally stay). It *always* printed out these messages during that portion before: (not verbatim but these are taken from /var/log/errors.log, and they correspond).
    Aug 29 10:52:28 destruct-o-bot kernel: [    5.035681] sp5100_tco: mmio address 0xb8fe00 already in use
    Aug 29 10:52:28 destruct-o-bot kernel: [    5.569406] kvm: disabled by bios
    Aug 29 10:52:28 destruct-o-bot kernel: [    5.646396] microcode: failed to load file amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin
    Aug 29 10:52:28 destruct-o-bot kernel: [    5.649536] microcode: failed to load file amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin
The KVM error message is new. But it started happening at the same time as the hard freezes did.
There are three paths that happen: The computer might get to the triggering udev events, blank the screen as though it were switching resolutions and then never turn the screen back on but freeze up hard. Or, it might black the screen as though changing resolutions as usual, but then turn back on to a screen of vertical lines (black and gray), and be frozen up hard. Or, it might boot normally.
I didn't see anything in dmesg, but then again I don't really know what to look for. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

The random blank screen during startup is still there with Kernel 3.5.6. Did a "blind" dmesg this time. I don't really know about these log-files but I did a vimdiff with the dmesg of a proper rreboot and found the difference in the latest radeon entries which didn't show up in the proper-boot-dmesg:

  • No more soundcard detected HDA-Intel Realtek ALC268, latest kernel?

    Hi!
I think this happened with the latest kernel upgrade?
now at boot up, when alsa loads it shows an error:
Unknown hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Realtek ALC268" "HDA:numbersss, numbersss, numbersss" "hexavalue" "hexavalue"
    any idea?

    yep... I have tried that...
    options snd-hda-intel index=0
    then tried
    options snd-hda-intel model=auto
(and model laptop, and model dell)
    then tried
    options snd-hda-intel model=auto enable=1 index=0
    /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf have this
    alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
there is no error... it is like alsa "sees" the card, but just play to "nothing"?...
the user is in audio group (as it was before, when all was working ok)
    it is not muted...
    no idea what to do

  • Can not load modules during boot with kernel 2.6.31

Every time i install kernel 2.6.31 (ever since it got into core), after reboot i receive message
    FATAL: module ... not found
with every module in my rc.conf, or sometimes with this message:
FATAL: could not load /lib/modules/2.6.30-ARCH/modules.dep no such file or directory
Before those errors the boot script complaisn about hardware clock (right after the Arch Linux line):
Could not access the hardware clock via any known method.
After that I can still start X but my keyboard and mouse are completely dead. The console works fine, i just can not load any module per hand, some daemon can not be started - obviously.
Latest kernel 2.6.30 works fine. Is this a problem of 2.6.31 ?

    /lib/modules/2.6.30-ARCH/
That is very strange... it's not booting into .31
It's an install problem because that dir shouldn't be there after updating kernel26.
I know you said you installed from core, but was it a custom install? Did you change the PKGBUILD in anyway?
After installing .31, before rebooting do depmod 2.6.31-ARCH
    Then do mkinitcpio -p kernel26
Post the output of the second one.

  • After latest kernel update Grub freaks out

Out of three machine that I have Arch running on, all have grabbed the latest kernel update, only only of them is unable to boot.  Grub does not like something that it is finding here is the error that I get:
    Booting 'Arch Linux'
    root (hd0,5)
Filesystem type is jfs, partition type 0x83
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/c248a2d9-7fd9-48a4-ad-49-551246f36bee resume=/dev/sda5 ro vga=773
Error 2: Bad file or directory type
    Press any key to continue...
I already loaded I live cd to make sure that the uuid of the partition did not change and it has not, also the vmlinuz26 and kernel image are in the /boot directory.  Is this a one off problem or are other people seeing this issue, wanting to make sure this is not some kind of bug that need reported.  I am going to try just using /dev/sda6 instead of the UUID just to make sure that is not the problem (one of the working machines is setup using this method, the other is going through /dev/mapper because it uses LVM)

I have tried rebuilding the the kernel image and even tried reinstalling grub with no luck.  After not having a usable system for several days I ended up just having to reinstall and maybe found out more about the problem.  Using the net install image and a 64 bit install this time making a EXT2 boot and a root partition of JFS right after install I get a panic during boot about how the system can't find a valid filesystem on what would be root partition.  Even when passing the "rootfstype=jfs" to the kernel line in grub it still errors out telling me that it is "Bailing out, your on your own.  Good luck!" (pretty funny error messages if you are not ripping your hair out).  After that I redid the install this time making a EXT4 root partition and everything is working.
It seems to me that this all points to a problem with JFS on 64 bit systems, my other systems are all 32 bit and usign JFS root just fine... can anyone else confirm this?
