Dell 2850 with usb floppy install (problems)

Hi All,
I have a Dell Poweredge 2850 that I am trying to get 10 running on. It requires the PERC4 driver which I downloaded from the sun download site. The usb floppy works fine for the initial load, but once install reaches the end of D1, it asks for the floppy again, and cannot find it. I assume this is because the USB filters are not up and running at that poin. Any ideas on a workaround?
Thanks in advance

Problem is that the USB mass storage driver use a different
device name than PS/2 floppies -- /dev/dsk/c*t0d0p0 (USB) instead
of /dev/diskette (PS/2). The installer knows nothing about
the USB mass storgae floppy device name /dev/dsk/c*t0d0p0;
the installer tries to find the ITU floppy on /dev/diskette.

  • Tips for working with USB floppy drives

I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on working with USB floppy drives in Archlinux.
One thing I've noticed is that trying to use mkfs.msdos on my USB floppy drive directly doesn't seem to result in a usable disk (it's mountable, but reports that I don't have enough space available to copy files), but if I use the command on an image file the same size as a floppy disk and then use dd to copy the blank image to my USB drive I get a disk that's perfectly usable.  Anybody know what the deal is with that or how I might be able to successfully format a disk in fewer steps (other than keeping the blank images around and just using dd to format the floppies, haha)?
Also, I'd like to hear any other tips or tricks any of you have for working with USB floppy drives.  They just seem so much more usable under Windows as opposed to Linux, and that disappoints me a little.

jmetal88 wrote:Okay, thanks guys.  I haven't figured out the issue yet, but you're helping me narrow it down.  I decided to run a df -h command after each try of formatting the disk this time.  I tried the low-level ufiformat command followed by a mkfs.msdos on the device, using a 720k disk, and df -h showed 700k free on the file system.  It's just not making the file system large enough (I believe the file I was trying to copy over was 710k or so).  When I run mkfs.msdos on a 720k disk image and then dd the image over to the drive, df -h shows 713k free after mounting the drive.  Any idea why mkfs.msdos isn't filling out the full 720k on the disk itself, but is on the image?
I would assume this happens because (as far as I can tell from skimming through the source over the course of a few minutes) mkfs.fat only applies floppy size heuristics to fd and lo devices -- your USB floppy drive is treated as a hard drive, and that leads to less-than-ideal default parameters. Run
    fsck.fat -v
on the more spacious filesystem to figure out what options need to be set when you attempt formatting an actual disk. Or just make things easier by keeping newly-formatted blank disk images on hand so that dd and (maybe) ufiformat are all you need to worry about.

  • Portege R100 - can I reinstall WXP with USB floppy & USB drive?

I have recently corrupted my R100 through a virus attack. In spite of belatedly cleaning things up with Norton it now goes very slowly and I believe the only way forward is through a total XP reinstall.
I have the original recovery CDs and a USB floppy drive but not a PCMIA CDRom. As luck would have it my USB CDRom is broken. How do I get out of this situation? I am about to throw out an old desktop and would be happy to use the XP retail on the R100 if needed. Moreover is there any way to start the format & install process from a bootable floppy and then install the bulk of the OS from a USB drive - having been populated previously with copies of CD contents? Desperate people dream up desperate methods!
I have read some other threads on XP recovery issues but they are not entirely coincident with my circumstances. Any help on this front would be very gratefully received.
    Thanks in advance.

If you can get the setup files onto the R100 HDD using a FAT32 partition, you can install Windows from the HDD after booting from an MSDOS boot disk. (MSDOS cannot see NTFS drives).
You can use a 1.8" USB HDD Adapter to copy the Setup files to the R100 HDD from another PC. The Adapter wouldn't be expensive.

  • MSI KSN Neo2 USB floppy boot problem

    Hi all,
I've just put together a PC using the MSI K8N Neo2 to replace my gigabyte. I've got an option on these boards (nforce3) to boot from a USB floppy and did so several times with the gigabyte (memtest and 6800ultra bios flash). For some reason however, the MSI refuses to do so. I get to POST and then I get a "detecting IDE drives...." and that's it. The machine freezes. I can't F10 or DEL, I have to Ctrl, Alt Del and pull out the floppy before it will post. I've done the obvious things like 1st in Boot order, floppy seek etc, as far as I'm aware everything's the same as the gigabyte. If I plug it in once in windows, it's recognised and works fine. Any suggestions would be very welcome.
    Many Thanks in advance.

I don't know if I can give any more details,

-Gainward Geforce 3 ti 200 golden edition

When I boot I see Gainward logo then monitor goes black (not power save just black), when i reset it will happen again. Diagnostic leds does some tests but hangs on "Sing on bios". I have tried to reset with jumpers, different cables with differend harddrives. Different memory slots. Tonight different memories. Motherboard and prosessor is 1 day old every else is from my old computer which was 2000+ Athlon with epox via kt333. Don't know what to test anymore and I don't have any spare parts to test what is broke or is it just memories? but why it don't hang on memory test etc.

  • Floppy install problems

I'm trying to install arch on my toshiba laptop, it doesn't have either cd or usb, but an ethernet jack and a floppy reader. The floppy bootup works perfectly fine, but when I come to the part of selecting what mirror I wish to download the package-list from all returns errors ("Error fetching package list from server"). Does anyone know how to fix this?
Oh, the internet connection works perfectly fine I'm able to ping websites e.g. google.

I was able to get to the package selection screen using the floppy install but now it failed to download pacman.  It told me to try again and now it says "Do you want to keep the downloaded packages?  You can delete them later by running 'pacman -S --clean'"  I choose "yes"  and it repeatedly says "One or more packages failed to download.  ou can try again by re-selecting  Install packages from the main menu.  on the info console ctrl-alt-f5 I get the following messages
    :: Synchronizing ackage databases. . .
warning: failed to get filesieze for current.db.tar.gz
warning: failed to get mtime for current.db.tar.gz
failed downloading current.db.tar.gz from mir1.archlinuxfr.org:  550 failed to open file.
    failed to synchronize current
error: could not open sync database: current
    have you used --refresh yet?
When I try to use this package set ftp://mir1.archlinuxfr.org/archlinux/current/os/i686/
it cannot file the packages.txt file because it isn't in it's own folder called 'setup' which is where the floppy disk install is told to locate the file.
I had been using ftp://mir1.archlinuxfr.org/archlinux/0.7.1/os/i686/ since it does have the setup directory but it just won't work.  So obviously the floppy images I downloaded from mir1.archlinuxfr.org are pointless and I am up the creek without a paddle.  I wish I had a working cd-rom drive as life would be so much easier.
That quote from the official installation guide, while helpful to some, has no effect on my situation.  Obviously the floppy disk install method is no longer in service so I'll just have to wait to try arch linux.  Unfortunately, this also means I am without a computer until I can get said cd-rom drive.
The main point is that FLOPPY DRIVE FTP INSTALL NO LONGER IS SUPPORTED.  Am I correct?

This is a problem when a Microsoft web camera is installed prior to the boot up of the computer
The webcam works fine if it is installed after the boot up.
When any type of USB product that does not have an OS is installed in any USB port the computer freezes at the BIOS POST screen and will not finish the POST unless the USB device is removed. If there is an OS on the USB device it boots normally to that device and it also boots normally to the installed OS if the USB device is not installed.
Contacted HP Support and was told to update the BIOS, which I had already done. Then I was told that the computer was out of warranty and I could pay for the service if I wanted help. I agreed to pay if the problem was fixed. This brought a reply that they did not know if the problem could be fixed.
The next day I received an email with Critical Alerts, one showing the BIOS update I had already installed and 2 other non critical updates.
Since HP did not show any interest in fixing this problem I am posting it here to see if anyone else has had this problem.

    Hi,
Boot into the bios and change the boot priority order and save the setting change.  Look under the Storage TAB drop down and then Boot Order. Highlight USB and press enter and then the down arrow to move it below the hard drive.  Save the changes when you exit the bios.

  • How to use a Dell Printer (with USB)

I have a dell all-in-one printer 964 that I would like to use (via USB) with my Macbook Pro. When I try to use it, it's looking for a driver and forcing me to choose one. Dell is not in the list. I can download the driver from dell, but it's an .exe file.
What can I do to get these 2 to work together? Anything?
    Thanks in advance.
I'm new to Mac... switching from a Dell.

I may be able to offer a small glimmer of hope.
The dirty little secret about Dell's printers is they're all actually Lexmarks in different cases. You might, then, be able to get a Lexmark driver to recognize your Dell as one of its own. Unfortunately, the Lexmark that the 964 is apparently derived from, the x8350, does not offer Mac drivers.
However, you may be able to use one of the two following drivers:
    For the Lexmark X9350
    http://www.downloaddelivery.com/srfilecache/9300%20Series%20Web%20Installer.dmg
    For the Lexmark X5450
    http://www.downloaddelivery.com/srfilecache/5400%20Series%20Web%20Installer.dmg
No guarantees, but those drivers may help.
All else fails? I'm a fan of HP's printers.

  • 0404 USB Software Install Problems

Just purchased E-Mu 0404. I plugged into USB & p.c.recognised it OK. After software install, p.c. hung on reboot so I had to crash it! After reboot, p.c. hung at registration so had to crash it again. Decided to start a fresh so removed programme & drivers & tried a new install. Flash window starts it's preamble OK with country & language, but as soon as it gets to the install section I get the message "Drivers have previously been installed on this machine without re booting. Please re boot & try again" Every time I reboot I get the same message. I've tried downloading new software but the same thing happens.
    Can anyone help

Sound like there is something left over in your windows registry from the messed up install.
Surest way to fix it is to back up all your important data, format your OS drive, and reinstall windows and the 0404 drivers
If you're not willing to do that, you can try to manually remove every instance or trace of the messed up EMU drivers from your registry by trying the following:
click start-> run-> type in "regedit" and hit enter/ok. Inside regedit go to edit -> find -> and type in "emu" and hit search, delete every instance that shows up, and hit F3 to continue searching after each object is found.
also make sure all the files/folders are removed from your "Program Files\Creative Professional" folder
    HOPE THAT HALPS

I also just bought a 4630 and have the same problem (Windows XP) BUT after finally figuring out how to enter numbers on the key pad I was able to get the device to recognize and accept my wireless connection HOWEVER when attempting to print the software claims it could not communicate with the printer BUT the printer worked just fine and I was able to get at least 8 pages of high quality text.

  • Purchased a USB Floppy Drive..Having trouble installing?

I'm trying to install, having trouble understanding pdf manuel. Can anyone explain in true laymen terms. I have intel mac and trying to learn the cp language. How do you get the mac to read the floppy when it is inserted?
ALL INFO FROM YOU EXPERTS WILL BE OF GREAT VALUE
    Thank you
    Lisa

    Hi, Lisa.
If you have a USB Floppy Drive, all you need to do is connect it to one of the USB ports on your Mac. Then insert floppy. That's it.
Performance of floppy drives under Mac OS X is notoriously slow compared to under Mac OS 9, but they work. With a Mac, there's no software to install: it's truly plug-and-play with USB floppy drives.
What specific brand and model number of USB floppy drive did you buy?
My wife has a Targus model PA905 external USB floppy drive that works properly with all our Macs and her work PC.
    Good luck!

    USB floppy drives?

oh yes, you are unfamiliar with windows sharing. no prob.
First off you have to set up a network on your windows PC. I don't know how savvy you are with your PC, but basically you have run the network setup wizard. You might also have to set up a protocol in your network properties (usually IPX will do the trick). If you click on the windows start button and see a network button near the my computer button you are most of the way there.
Once you have your computer set up for networking you need to enable sharing, which you also do in the network properties (there is a checkbox somewhere).
Lastly, you need to specify which folder(s) you want to share! Just right click on the drive (D: for example) in my computer and click 'sharing'. Naviagate the menus and enable sharing.
Your MBP is already set up for talking to windows networks, so just go to finder and click on networks, pick the workgroup that you specified when you set up your network on your windows machine and click ok. A connection to your external drive should appear. Now you can drag and drop all the files you want.
Sorry if this is confusing, but I can't really rememeber all this stuff off the top of my head.
If you want more clarification, search for 'how to share in windows XP' or something like that.
    Good luck

  • More Dell 2850 problems

With prior help, I got the PERC4 drivers loaded after cd1...reboot went ok, but then when it prompted for cd2, it could not read it. Basically, it seems to be the same problem as with the floppy. • Hi I'm trying to install an HP C4180 printer as net printer through Alicegate router (Thompson technicolor). Printer works ok when connected with USB to Macbook air, but cannot be seen on the printer installation configuration. Mac OSx 10.7 (Lion)

    Hi folks.
From this morning I'm trying to "see" an HP printer C4180 connected on the USB port of the wi-fi router (TIM Alicegate ADSL2 Wifi+N, manufacturer Technicolor).
I installed latest drivers and checked everything is ok and works fine until printer is connected directly with USB to my Macbook Air.
Then I connect the USB to the router and try to find the printer.
On Alice help suggest to find it by ging to system preferences, then printers, add printer with "+", select "windows" sheet. There I can see - not always in reality, but sometimes - the "workgroup" in the left column, select, "alicegate" in second column, select, and here instead of finding the printer list there is a pop up saying that "the server version you are trying to connect to is not supported".
Reading other forums, it may seem that the problem is Lion not yet supporting this kind of connection.
Here a photo of the situation when the message occurs:
