Dell and Apple share same wireless signal?

I have a fairly new Macbook C2D and a Playstation 3 as well as a Dell laptop and a Dell desktop that belongs to other members of my family in the same house. My question is about a wireless router. We have DSL internet that is about to be installed in about a week and in order to all share the internet all over the house I was going to opt for a wireless router to avoid running ethernet cables everywhere. However, I was wondering if I buy a Linksys (sp?) router or another name brand will all of our computers be able to share the same wireless signal? I didn't know if mine being an Apple and a Sony and theirs being Dells if it would matter. Also, can 4 computers share the same wireless signal anyway? I apologize if these are stupid questions but I have unfortunately had dial-up internet my entire life and know nothing about DSL (is it really that much faster?) or wireless at all. Please help! Thanks in advance!

As long as all the computers have a wireless card i.e. airport, linksys, atheros... you shouldn't have any probs. remember that the more people using the internet, chances are, it's going to be slower. and yes, dsl is faster.

I just purchased an Apple TV.  I have a pc running windows 7.  It is connected to a router and the router is connected to a wireless router.  I connect my iPhone, iPad and apple tv to wireless network but do not know how to put the pc on the wifi network so the Apple TV can do home share.

I don't mean to be facetious but sometimes the simplest things are overlooked.  To connect to your library you have to have the computer where the iTunes library is located running and with iTunes open.  It also needs to be on the same network.  My network is dual band and works with either stream but a friend of mine does not.  He has to set the computer and the Apple TV to the same band.  Hope this helps.

  • Mac and windows sharing a wireless signal ??

I am in the process of choosing a new system - leaning towards the new imac with the Intel chip. I am also buying my daughter a laptop for college next year, but she won't touch a mac, it must be windows (yes, she is in need of more education). Anyway I am going to move from dial up to DSL and wireless. My main question concerns compatibility - I haven't bought either system, but want to make sure that both systems can share/receive the signal. More important than what works best, is what doesn't work.
Any help would be appreciated. I may not be able to get back to the board for a couple days though. Thanks.
    still choosing new system(s)

A Windows laptop with an 802.11g adapter will work fine on an Airport network.
A Mac with an Airport Extreme card will work fine on an 802.11g network.
Airport Extreme is Apple's name for 802.11g

  • My daughter and i share same itunes account but we want to separate and have our own. if i change "our" account to "her" account how can i set up a new "for me only" account and retrieve all my contacts and apps

my daughter and i share the same i tunes account but want to have our own now. how can i set up a new account just for me and still move or transfer my existing apps, contacts etc?

Yes, with the credentials of the account that the media/content was purchased with.
Content is permanently tied to the account it is purchased with and cannot be merged, moved, or transferred to another account.

  • I am just a little embarrased... i have a new dell and an old ipod.  i want to put a cd in my dell and copy it onto my old ipod...dell and apple do not seem to be talking to each other... how in **** do i do this!

i am just a little embarrased... i have a new dell and an old ipod.  i want to copy a cd from my new dell onto my old ipod but absolutely nothing comes up on the screen to do this....

You will first have to install the OS that shipped with the Mac. After that, you can upgrade it to Mavericks.

  • Connecting two WRV200's to share same wireless and wired network

I am looking at purchasing a second WRV200.  I want to have both wired together on the same network along with having them include the wireless on both to the same network. i.e. having two wired locations and two wireless AP's to get on to the one network.
Is there a way to configure two WRV200's to do this?
    Regards...

Yes. You can use the access point inside the WRV200 bypassing all the router functions. You configure the second WRV with a free LAN IP address inside your main LAN (e.g. 192.168.1.2 if 192.168.1.1 is your main router). You disable the DHCP server on the second WRV. Then you wire a numbered LAN port of the second WRV to your existing LAN. Do not use the internet port of the second WRV. Now you only use the wireless access point and the switch inside the WRV.
To create a single wireless roaming network you set up the wireless on both WRVs with identical wireless settings (SSID, wireless security, keys, etc.) The only difference should be in the allocation of channels. They should not use the same channel to avoid interference.

  • HT1595 It takes literally hours to load a move and I have good wireless signal...what's up with that?

It is taking literally hours for movies to load on Apple TV using both NETFLIX and iTunes.  I have a strong wifi signal and according to the connection test, all is well.  What's up with that?

Wifi signal and connection test don't really give a good indication of where things are at
Check speedtest.net to see actual connection speed, needs at least 6mbps consistently for instant HD stream
Check istumbler.net or netstumbler to verify interference
Male sure you are on the ISPs DNS (settings - network - configure DNS - automatic)

  • I have a brand new Macbook Pro and I can't connect it to my printer which is a Dell 1110. I have called/emailed Dell and Apple. Apple gave me a list of steps and the final step is to navigate my driver and I can't find it. Where can I find it?

This is the link that was given to me and I am using the USB instalation steps:
    http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?docid=41 5661#Issue0_1

I have been Googling for a while now and it appears that there is no driver for the newer Mac OS'es....for the Dell 1110.....a mention of Gutenprint generic drivers and for Samsung drivers (they make the printer for Dell) is all I found...

  • Slightly Off Topic: Toshiba join Dell and Apple to recall the Battery

For someone who feel bad about apple recall battery program (affected only for certain G4 iBook and or G4 Powerbook ~ not MacBook or MacBook Pro), this link might make you fell better that we are not the only one (or two ~ Dell recall it first).

    Peace Out.

mailbfr uses rsync and thus adds only changes after the first backup. So it's a good idea to use different directories once a week.
Your cron job looks ok (you used the syntax I gave you to get it, right?) and mailbfr doesn't care whether it's run interactively or not.
What do your logs tell you? Cron output gets send to "root" on your system. If you haven't done so, add an alias so that mail for "root" comes to your mailbox.
Does cron per se actually run? Check /system/library/launchdaemons/com.vix.cron.plist

  • NEED HELP TO SET UP SMALL NETWORK - WIRELESS SIGNAL FROM NOVATEL U760 USB

    Hello -
I need help setting up a small network in my new home in Florida, which has no wired broadband capability - not cable, not dsl. My options are satellite (which I'd like to avoid) or wireless broadband via Millenicom (or now Virgin Mobile) using their Novatel U760 USB stick.
Here are the network components - someone please tell me how to set this up:
PC #1 (has wireless card, but I've connected it by ethernet to the router)
PC #2 (no wireless card; connected via ethernet to router)
MACBOOK, 1 1/2 years old (2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 gigs RAM), running OS 10.58, connected wirelessly to router.
AIRPORT EXTREME BASE STATION, Model A1143.
I'm not thrilled about using a wireless 3G signal as my primary one, (sprint network, claims 600 - 1400 kbps speed), but it costs 1/2 to 1/3 of what a slightly faster satellite signal would.
I have not ordered this service yet. Before I do, I'd like a clear understanding that I can, in fact, set up my simple network, which I'd probably do the same as it's now configured with cable broadband - both PC's plug via
ethernet into the Airport Extreme router, the MacBook connects wirelessly - AND,
    my question is this:
Can I plug the wireless card - a Novatel U760 USB-stick device - straight into that USB slot in the Airport Extreme base station and will it automatically recognize that device?
Or, do I have to plug it into the MacBook and somehow share that wireless signal between the 2 PC's (only 1 of which has a wireless card, so I'd have to get a card for PC #2)?
And help anyone can provide will be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Em

    from the Airport FAQ #14:
"Question: Can I connect my Soundsticks or other USB speakers to AirPort Express?
Answer: No. The USB port is for connecting a printer, not for other devices."
Im assuming other devices include USB modems.
So, I would say your cheaper route would be to get a second wireless card and just share your internet connection from one of your PC.

  • Powerbook G4 Can't "See" Wireless Signal from Ubee Modem/Router

I was given a G4 Powerbook while out of town and it found the wireless signal in an apartment complex and a major airport just fine. But upon returning home it can't "see" the signal from my (Time Warner, Road Runner Extreme) Ubee modem/router. My Mac Mini's Airport sees the Ubee wireless signal fine, but the older Powerbook G4 can't. (The Airport signal in the menu bar has "bars" but they are grayed out.
Can an older G4 connect with the newer Ubee modem/router? Are there security settings that will allow this?
    Tx,
    WK

CRMDVM -- Thanks for the helpful info -- you are probably right on both counts:
The apartments where I picked up a signal is in an "old folks" apt. complex, meaning the router I was picking up was probably old -- compatible with the G4 lineage. And the Atlanta airport probably has a wireless system to allow the vast number of old and new computers that people carry to connect.
My Mac Mini connects via WPA2 Personal security code, and I set the G4 to the same security (in the Network preference pane) but still nothing. The Airport wireless icon in the menu bar is still grayed out -- it isn't the "blank" icon as when Airport is turned off. It has the wireless wave lines in the icon, but just grayed out.
Maybe the G4 is just too old to "see" the newer wireless signal from the new modem/router.
Thanks again for your help -- you definitely provided more than I knew. (btw, I'm just above you in Union County in Stallings).
    WK

  • HT3702 I am able to purchase music, but I cannot purchase movies, credit card processing unavailable.  On computer and Apple TV.

Tried to purchase movies on computer and apple tv, same issue.

The security code is the 3 or 4 digit code outside of the actual card number (and NOT the same as your PIN). It is usually located on the front of AMEX cards and on the back of Visa and MC. You typically wouldn't need that for purchases in a physical store. Log into your AppleID, modify the payment method  and set it with the proper code.

  • Apple TV 2G (Airplay and Homesharing) can only stream from devices on the same wireless access point range??

    connection:
40 Mbps Fiber Broadband connection using:
    Devices:
    1. Main Modem/router (AP1): Huawei HG8245 (provided by ISP) - Wireless enabled.
    2. Remote Access point (AP2): Linksys/Cisco E3200 Wireless gigabyte router flashed with DD-WRT v24-sp2 (06/14/11) mini (Cascaded -wired- LAN to LAN from main modem).
    3. Wireless Repeater to cover a dead spot  (AP3): Linksys/Cisco E1000 wireless repeater.
    4. Apple Tv (AT2G) with home sharing/airplay enabled.
5.( Ipad) with home sharing on itunes enabled.
    6. Win7 (PC) using iTunes with Home sharing enabled.
all devices are updated to their latest firmware.
In order to cover a large 3 story house with Wifi. I had (AP1) is located on the first floor, while (AP2) is located in the basement floor directly wired by LAN to LAN with (AP1). (AP3) is located on the Ground floor away from the living room to repeat wireless network into the back yard. While (AT2G) is located in the living room on the ground floor right in the middle of both (AP1) + (AP2) while connected via Wifi.
Network SSID, security, passphrase and wireless settings of (AP2) are identical to (AP1) to create a single big LAN/WLAN roaming network where all devices connected to both wireless access points can find/share the others. As understood, it's refered to as bridging.
I have noticed that my iphone/ipad does not show the airplay button anywhere within the wireless network. it seems that the apple TV randomly choses to connect to the AP with stronger signal, or switch to the other in case of a reboot to one of them.
to elaborate further, if i was sitting in the living room (groundfloor), trying to airplay some you tube contents via Wifi to my Apple TV, i may not find the airplay button available all the time, i found out the reason is while i'm wirelessly connected to AP1, the Apple TV was connected to AP2 and both deviced cannot detect each others to enable my purpose. that goes the same for Home Sharing. only if my Ipad/PC and Apple Tv are on the same wireless AP. they would detect each others immediately.
although, the second AP (AP2) is suppose to extend my wireless network of the same subnet in which any device connected can be found.
After all sorts of trial and error tweaking my router/access point, I thought the problem would be due to the Linksys 3200 capability of bridging WLAN and lacks few protocols that enables my purpose. i have flashed the firmware to a DD-WRT, but again, problem was not solved.
I have not tried having my Apple Tv wired to either router/AP, but i assume it may work well if i do so. i still need to solve this wireless connection issue though.
Am i the only one with this problem, would there be something wrong with my setup?
    Your feedback is highly appreciated.

You may or may not already have your network set up correctly, it's just that I can't tell from what you have said.
I have a main router provided by my ISP, I have several other Airport Extremes and Airport expresses connected by Ethernet, all set up to bridge the network created by the main router.
Each maker has their own settings, but bridging should be reasonably obvious. In simple terms my main router distributes IP addresses to all devices, the Airports bridge that network by passing these addresses to the devices from the main router. A base station that isn't in bridging mode will distribute its own addresses to the devices connected to it.
I don't really follow your next point.
instruction for configuration vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, the best course of action here is to refer to the manual. If everything is set up properly the addresses of everything on your network will have identical sets of numbers for the first 3 of 4 groups of numbers that make up an address, the last set must always be different. I think the part you are referring to with your DD-WRT is the option to have Ethernet and wifi bridged or not.
Some routers may be easier to configure than others, but generally speaking they should all work with the Apple TV. 5Ghz is less likely to suffer interference but it is much more likely to be blocked by solid objects, it may or may not be an advantage.

  • HT3819 Home Share issue: I have a Mac and Apple TV. Both are log into the same Wifi network and the same iTunes account (I can view purchased movies on AppleTV). Home Sharing shows 'ON' for both devices. BUT...AppleTV shows no computers. Itunes sidebar-no

Has anyone else found solution to Apple devices not 'seeing' each other on Home Share?  I have a Macbook Air (new Nov'12) and Apple TV (new Dec'12). Software updated on both. Both are logged into the same Wifi network and the same iTunes account (I can view movies purchased from iTunes on my AppleTV). Home Sharing shows 'ON' for both devices. BUT...AppleTV shows no computers... and ... Itunes sidebar does not have a 'Shared' area at all.  Help please as without this functionality, my Apple TV only provides portal to purchased (i.e. Netflix,...) content which I can get from Wii or Xbox.
I have already tried the following without success:
    1. Homeshare DID work the first day after I setup Apple TV... but the next day it has not worked since then.
    2. Powered off 30 sec then re-started (Apple TV & Macbook & iTunes login)
    3. Checked Firewall settings per Home Sharing troubleshooting guide (correct settings)
    4. Turning on Photostream in iPhoto and selecting iPhoto within iTunes and then checking to see if Photostream shows anything on AppleTV (it shows 'on' for my iTunes account but 'Zero' pictures found ... despite the >3,000 pictures showing avail in iTunes).
I also have 'Remote" app on my iPhone 4, with Home Sharing turned on (same Wifi network)... it has a very similar message as the Apple TV and same result that despite all devices having HomeShare 'on' they cannot see each other:  "Remote will automatically find the iTunes libraries and Apple TVs that have Home Sharing turned on using the account xxxx (it lists my correct itunes account name)."

I solved this by reset of the Wifi (unplug cable and power to both modem and wifi ... wait 60 sec ... plug in modem cable and power ... plug in wifi power and LAN to modem ... restart AppleTV and Mac ... Turn Home Share 'OFF' in iTunes then back "ON" ... it took ~60 sec for the AppleTV to pick up my Mac in computers.
