I have a new Dell laptop with Integrated SB Audity HD software edition. The computer does not have the option to record "what you hear" only the "CD" and "Line in" options are available. What can I do to start recording "what you hear"

I've been shopping for a laptop, and noticed this option from Dell. I planned to get a 24-bit external Li've! card or a audigy NX from ebay before I saw it
I have a Audigy 2 ZS in my desktop (that I'm getting rid of) right now. Does the software edition sound as good? It's not a gaming laptop, so I don't care if it takes CPU cycles.

Your best bet for a laptop would be the PCMCIA Audigy 2 ZS. This features the same hardware processing features like the Audigy 2 ZS. If you have a newer laptop, then you may also want to see the X-Fi XtremeAudio ExpressCard. It isn't hardware, but it's software engine may sound better than the Audigy in games.

They FINALLY came out with a Universal Binary version of Kontakt Player. Unfortunately, I still have to wait for them to process the Garritan Personal Orchestra samples for the new player, so no great orchestral instruments for me just yet.

Looking for DELL Webcam Central software and the webcam software updates

My laptop is DELL XPSM1530. I read that the webcam was made by Creative Technology.
Recently, I read in DELL.com that there is a software named DELL Webcam Central.
It was said that it can improve the camera performance.
I have looked for it in DELL.com but I did not found it and I also have looked it here but I got nothing.
Where can I get it? Is it the same as Webcam Manager / Webcam Central that has been installed in my laptop here?
And if it the same, where can I have the software updates?

Software Editing Issue

I am using CS4 and i am trying to continue editing a project and it keeps freezing up and not responding, causing me to havce to close the program, but when I reopen, and start to edit, it does the same thing.
Also, there is a gold bar that keeps generating in the lower right hand corner and it says, "Generating Peak File for 2009-05-21 13.20.26 Jim Ho...", which is piece of video footage I was going to use, but did not and did clear from the project.
Why is this happening, as I have done many projects and never had this happen until now?

Downloading Adobe on a Dell--Open Office software?

I have downloaded Adobe Reader on my Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop (Windows 7 operating system, 3 GB RAM, Intel Pentium Processor) on three separate occasions, hoping I will be able to use it to view PDF documents. This would help me enormously in viewing time-sensitive documents. Each of the downloads have failed. The predominant issue I can think of is that I do not have Microsoft Office on my laptop--instead I have OpenOffice, which may be the problem. Each time, when I attempt to open PDF files, they convert to WordPad and appear as gibberish. Is there a solution to this, apart from installing the various Microsoft Office programs?

You do not need Microsoft Office (or any other Office suite) to download/install/use Adobe Reader.
The simplest way to fix the Reader's file associations is to uninstall & reinstall it; download the full installer from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

Software Editing Advice

I am very new to video editing. I started using Macs about a year ago. Right now, I am using and intel-based Mac book pro.
I would like to start creating videos from DVD and other assorted AVI files in order to post movies on YouTube. My question: Is Final Cut Express HD overkill? I have been playing with iMovie and GarageBand and iPhoto, but I have a feeling I will want to go beyond their limitations. Basically, I want to edit video and music to create movies.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

ITunes v/s Dell printer software - Help needed! At the end of my tether!

HI there In Jan I purachsed a new Dell printer and since this I have been unable to use my IPOD due to an error. I have been in contact with Dell, the IT dep rang me and advised that as the IPOD was mainly designed to work with the MAC system sometimes an error can occur when using XP. I advised him that this was a "joke"! He advised that the software is not compatable! I previously had DEll printer and software and had no issues, I advised him of this and he basically told me that the error sometimes happens and sometimes it does not - its the luck of the draw! He advised me to speak with apple (what reason I dont know). I have complained to Dell however half the time I feel like I am talking to a brick wall, they dont want to listen! I advised them to send me some new software to enable me to use both my printer and IPOD (I also get the same error on my digital camera) OR collect my printer so that I can purchase a new one that will work! Has anyone any ideas what I can do next as at th moment I cant use my IPOD or camera. Best wiskes Tinky111.

I have finally sorted this with Dell.

HT1414 In syncing my iphone to my itunes account, it proceeds fine until step 6/6 music. Then there is a message that I tunes software has stopped working. This has happened multiple times. I am on a windows 7 Dell laptop. Thank you.

It sounds like we are running into issues with the iTunes software connecting to your device. If possible, lets try plugging your iPhone 5 in with a different cable. Also, try plugging it in to a different USB port on your computer:

UPDATE for DELL SB Live

I need help deciding if I should update Sound Blaster Li've 5. from Dell. I have gone to the update page but everything I read to check if I need the update does not match what is in my computer.
I currently have SB Li've build version: SBL5-DLSTD-W3-LB; Rev# A00-00. This information is from the OEM install CD that came with the computer. Play Center v3.02.29 currently installed.
I was not able to find the ctavd2k.sys and ha0kx2k.sys in the [windows dir]\System32\drivers but I did find a driver ctoss2k dated 9/22/03. There is a glitch with the juke box, when I try to view it full screen I can not drag it to fit the screen and I only see part of it. Welcome to SB Li've! WDM Dell. Creative and Dell Hell have merged to make upgrading the SB LIVe to XP from ME a living hell. I have a Dell Dimension 800 with, unfortunately, a SB Li've card. When you go for the gold and then get cheap, this is what happens.
For more than a week I have been trying to upgrade SB. I went onto both Dell and Creative before updating. I downloaded more than seven HUGE files from Creative and three from Dell.
WINDOWS tells you to UNINSTALL your DRIVERS in order to make them compatible for the upgrade. CREATIVE tells you to UNINSTALL the Creative play center and all the other mixers, headquarters, etc. and to REINSTALL THEM-- Then, creative tells you if you have this DIGITAL DELL AUDIO CARD installed, all you need to do is download SBL5DL-DRVPACK_LB and the patch. Fair enough.
GUESS WHAT the MESSAGE IS CREATIVE? THERE IS NO SOUNDBLASTER AUDIO CARD INSTALLED-Duh--OKAY, Reinstall WDM hardware. BAD MOVE. Restore, Restore, Restore
Pick the installation dri've--no. DRVPACK is exe file and drivers needs an inf file.
--OKAY. I installed the STAND ALONE LIVE VERSION. DUH-- Now I have a creative play center and all the other things--BUT NO RECORDER. When trying to install the updated, RECORDER NOT FOUND. Of course it's not found, it was removed in order to upgrade. And if one reinstalls, one gets no task manager when they reboot.
Now, Control panel says I have a sound blaster li've card (duh-how come creative doesn't know it)
And I have XP web installed also,. I also have three folders (creative, soundblaster, creative playcenter2)
WHat I don't have is A DRIVER THAT RECOGNIZES MY DELL CARD and SOFTWARE THAT UPDATES CORRECTLY TO XP.
ANYONE ELSE have this problem. HAS ANYONE FIXE IT? My SB card is listed as E8E0 in device manager with PCI slot 4 as its location.

I purchased a creative cloud membership but it still asks me for a serial number when I try to open software

I had Photoshop CC, Dreamweaver CC, and Illustrator CC installed as a trial. The trial has now run out and I purchased an account for a full subscription to all adobe software, but in the creative cloud app it keeps prompting me as "your trial has expired" and when I click "license this software" it prompts me with a serial number screen. All uninstalled apps have a "try" or "buy" button next to them when I assume it should say "install" since I've paid for them.
Some things I've read on forums and have tried with no success:
uninstalling and reinstalling all apps including creative cloud desktop manager
used the adobe cleaner utility to clean all leftover adobe files, then tried reinstalling software
edited the hosts file to remove any additional lines.
changed my language settings to International english.
tried signing in and out
I was told this computer had pirated adobe software installed on it at one time. Not sure if this is responsible for why this has been so problematic. Please help, Ive spent hours trying to figure this out. ps i'm on a mac.

I have just checked your account and found that you indeed have bought a Creative Cloud for Teams subscription but you have assigned the single seat to another user hence you ( If you are using your own Adobe ID ) are getting the trial error message.
Two options : Either reassign the seat to your self or add an additional seat and invite your self in the same Team.

Prosumer looking for the right desktop to edit hd footage...

I have a question for all of you, but before I ask the question I have searched high and low for an answer to my question and although I've found people in similar situations, I need to find an answer for my specific needs. Okay here it goes, I have an had camera Sony Sr11 and I want to edit the footage, somewhat flawlessly, I want it to run as smooth as possible b/cuz my current laptop (dell 1520 2.4 Ghz, 4GB Ram, non-dedicated graphics) isn't cutting it. I'm not a film student or anything I just like to make movies it's a hobby and I do it for family and friends that sort of thing. I intend on using final cut express to get that particular job done, I also have thousands of photos..and I don't plan on putting them on the hard drive of my computer, they're kept in an external hard drive. I like to edit those as well I wanted to use aperture for that. So the two main programs I want to use are final cut express hd and aperture...now for the third thing...I do a little gaming and I mean a little..I play sims 2 and I want to eventually play sims 3...so I want a computer that can run those games at the highest settings...compared to other games I don't think that's asking much but I don't want medium settings I want high settings...
So those are my main concerns...running final cut express, aperture, sims 2 and eventually sims 3...should I get the new Imac 24" 3.06 Ghz or should I bite the bullet save a little longer and get the mac pro with an external screen maybe hp or dell...oh and one more question do you have to be a "computer major" to get the adc discount b/cuz I'm a pharmacy student???

the discount is available to any one who's a registered student w/ a valid ID- check w/ your school bookstore, take your ID to an Apple Store or check out the Education Store here on apple.com for the requirements. the current iMacs are so new, there may not be anyone who has used it for gaming.... but you might want to check MacWorld in a few days to see if they have new Benchmark tests or Reviews that may help you decide about gaming or just keep the Dell for gaming. to edit the HDD, AVCHD, any not tape-based video over Firewire, you will need an Intel Mac & i suggest you get as much RAM as you can afford, try Crucial or OWC to get it for way less than Apple.

[Solved] No sound on Dell XPS 13 2015 (9343) with BIOS A03

I have been unable to get sound to work on my new 2015 Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition running kernel 4.0.1-1-ARCH. Arch is the only OS installed.
I have checked the wiki page and this forum post, which seems to indicate it should work with this configuration out of the box.
However, audio does not play through the speakers (the speakers were working in the original Ubuntu 14.04 installation) and when I tried to un-mute the volume, as described in the ALSA wiki page I received the following message:
$ amixer sset Master unmute
amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Master',0
I am not sure what other pertinent information to post, please forgive my ignorance and let me know. Thank you for your assistance.

I have installed the patched kernel and rebooted twice but am still encountering the same problem. The only difference to altercation's instructions is that the aur package has been updated:

The channel which is set at 20 gives a continuous "beep" (sine tone?) through headphones, when they are plugged into the jack.

The only other thing I have noticed in ~20 minutes of use are some graphical artefacts and flickering that occur with this kernel. I have previously set the Intel graphics acceleration to uxa, as described in the wiki, because of issues with virtual terminals and resuming from suspend. The graphical issues I am currently encountering are very minor, however.
Update:
Thanks to fumlead for this post. The problem seems to have been that the wrong card was set as default. Creating /etc/asound.conf and adding this:
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
has solved the problem under both the stock and aur kernels. I am going to stick with the stock kernel because of the graphical issues encountered with the alternate kernel. I am not currently using the audio jack for a microphone, which I believe should work for the alternate kernel but not the stock one.
There is a small bug with the speakers not automatically being silenced when headphones are plugged in, but hopefully that will be fixed in kernel 4.1.
