Dell Backup and Recovery - Factory Recovery fails, need advice.

Back story:
I have tried this three times on three separate laptops, with poor results. Windows 7 on two of them and 8.1 one one, on all three the recovery partition is corrupt.I first boot it off of a live disk and backup any desired files. Then I boot, press F8, choose "Repair your computer" and discover that "Dell Factory Image Restore" is not one of the available options... so I boot the pc off of a different live disk and remove a bunch of "viruses", then I boot it off of the internal harddrive.In Windows I find that "Dell Backup and Recovery" may or may not be on the pc. It may or may not have ever been run before. If it is absent I download it and install it. When I run DBaR it tells me it needs to update, don't power off or disconnect the machine from the internet, etc. I then wait HOURS for this part to complete. When done it...

    Uninstall it.  Reboot.  Then install.  Reboot.
    All of this should be done as Run as Administrator or it will fail.

  • How to restore a Time machine backup and get a recovery partition?

    Hi,
    I'm quite confused!
    I restored from a Time Machine backup and then setup boot camp (and removed that partition a while back) and now I don't have a recovery partition. (Can't enable File Vault and

    My new MacBook Pro didn't come with any CDs.
    Apparently I need the recovery partition to reinstall Lion from the internet.
    "Recovery HD offers on-disk recovery tools, allows you to restore from Time Machine backups, reinstall OS X Lion over the Internet..."
    The recommended solution from Apple seems to be reinstall with your OSX 10.6 CD (which I don't have) and then upgrade to Lion (which seems like a PITA).
    Info from : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649
    What process should I follow to restore my recovery partition and apply the current state of the machine from a backup?
    (the process should not involve anything I don't have, like USB memory sticks, Lion CDs, etc....)
    Supplementary questions which are only relevant if the answer is "you can't" (which would seem to be a major bug!) :
    Or is there a clever method to install a recovery partition onto an existing disk (which clearly has space for it)? I have searched for it but all the results I found have either not mentioned that it works without reinstalling but look like it's needed, or do say "reinstall".
    If I install Lion to an external disk, can I boot from that and use the recovery disk assistant tool to restore the partition to my internal disk? (Which I assume I'll need to do to get FileVault to work) ?
    Thanks,

    If your iPhone is jailbroken then it doesn't have a virus.

  • Filevault repair failed, need advice on data recovery options.

    As you may have seen from my previous posting, my main user Filevault account was corrupted and every attempt to repair it has failed. Since the repair was a failure, I would like some advice on what the best data recovery software would be. Since I don't feel like paying money for anything I would prefer you to give advice on software I can get for free. However if its absolutely necessary to use a purchased software to get best results then feel free to tell me. Often I hear that a lot of the Linux software have a great reputation in data recovery ability. I am able to get Linux on my Mac because I have a Knoppix CD and a Qemu emulator that would enable it to work so be sure to mention any of those options. Just try to tell me what the best way to recover the data would be. Thanks.

    Internal SATA drives, preferably in a RAID configuration. You can fit up to 4 in a macpro, including the system drive. They're cheap and reliable, and you could easily fit the capacity you currently have with your externals into the three spare slots.
    If you can't get enough capacity this way then you need to look into an external RAID like the G-RAID.
    A firewire daisy chain is far from the ideal storage solution for HD.

  • Restoring from Lion Time Machine backup and keeping Lion recovery partition

    I am installing a new hard drive in my MacBook Pro. I have a Time Machine backup of everything, but I'm aware that just restoring the Time Machine backup to the new drive will not restore the Lion recovery drive/partition. What is the best way to move my data to the new drive? Am I best doing a clean install and moving everything over by hand from the Time Machine backup?

    I've just done this. I booted from a Lion Recovery USB stick then restored from a Time Capsule. I had no RecoveryHD partition after it.
    However, if you download and run the Lion installer once you log in to your desktop it will re-create the RecoveryHD partition. Long way round though.
    Best solution is to make a bootable USB (8GB) or DVD from the Lion installer App. Then do a new install of Lion to get the Recovery HD partition created. Once installed you can restart and boot up using the newly created Recovery HD and restore your entire computer from the Time Capsule. Hey presto, your computer should be back to the way it was.

  • Export backups failing - Need advice

    Hello All,
    We have a 10.2.0.3 database for which we have to take export backups everyday in maintainence window, when only batch jobs and other non essentials SQL's are running on the database.
    The export command we have used in our script is as under:
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/exp / file=$ORACLE_DUMP_FILE compress=y full=y direct=n buffer=20480000 consistent=y statistics=none log=$ORACLE_LOGAtleast 3-4 times in a week, the export backup us failing with ORA-01555 errors like the one below:
    EXP-00008: ORACLE error 1555 encountered
    ORA-01555: snapshot too old: rollback segment number 10 with name "_SYSSMU10$" too small
    EXP-00000: Export terminated unsuccessfullyMy DB is configured as:
    SQL> show parameter undo_

    undo_management                      string      AUTO
    undo_retention                       integer     54000
    undo_tablespace                      string      UNDOTBSAlso:
    SQL> select max(tuned_undoretention) from v$undostat;
    MAX(TUNED_UNDORETENTION)
                       75598The Max value is reached somewhere in the evening, but our job runs at
    SQL> select begin_time from v$undostat where TUNED_UNDORETENTION = 75598;
    BEGIN_TIME
    29/05/2012 17:39:46At the time (as per my log file) when my export job failed, the above value was:
    SQL> select TUNED_UNDORETENTION from v$undostat where BEGIN_TIME like '29/05/2012 16:2%';
    TUNED_UNDORETENTION

    Hello. Thanks for the inputs on CONSISTENT option. There are pre-laid change mgmt processes in every organisation which needs to be maintained/taken in account before such changes are made, and that too, with client approvals, etc. Since it was not a feasible option to get EXPDP or RMAN implemented at this point, so was this question raised.
    There is a small issue, however, if we use CONSISTENT=N. Below is an extract from asktom.oracle.com:
    >
    imagine if you started an export at 9am of the EMP and DEPT tables.
    EMP started exporting at 9am and DEPT at 9:15am.
    Now, the EMP data would be "as of 9am", but the DEPT data would be as of 9:15am. What if
    you import that data now -- will it work? maybe, maybe not -- perhaps at 9:10am, someone
    fired the last employee in department 50 and deleted department 50. Your EMP export
    would have them in this deptno, your DEPT export would not have this deptno. The import
    would fail.
    If you use consistent=y, Oracle will export all of the data "as of 9am", so deptno=50
    will be included in all tables and the import will succeed.
    >
    That's one of the risks involved.
    Is there any other solution we can have in place for this issue? Thanks.

  • Backup and restore of music failed...

    Turing Test, you attempted to assist me earlier with this - Im sorry, I could not reply for some reason; but it didnt work.  I thank you for your attempt.
    As my previous post indicated.  I am running Windows 7 -- iTunes 10.5.2.
    I have imported all my music from .WAV (cd's) to MP3 format (so they are all now MP3 files).  The Tags appear to be fine in the external directory that I copied them to; but when I loaded them into the iTunes Music directory from the external drive via folders - it copied them into an Unknown Album and Unknown Artist.  Also, several indicate the Artist; but also have an Unknown Album....
    This all happened after I upgraded to 10.5.2.
    I only copied the Music Folder over for backup - thus my library file never was copied.
    I attempted to use your VB tools and they did not work.  I am thinking because they were no longer .WAV files.
    Any other thoughts?  I do sincerely thank you for any help.  If you like, I could have you remote into my workstation sometime.
    -Richard

    Thank you so verrrrrry much for your patience with me.
    I have the music files and they appear to now have gone into folders of the Unknown Artist\Unknown Album.  I also have several that appear to have a known artist; but no known album... this is weird and it all happened after I upgraded to 10.5.2 -- but too, maybe it was because I copied the files (music files that is) to the external drive and then reimaged and then attempted to do an import of the folders.  I only copied the iTunes music folder perse to the external drive and did not do a backup of it.  The old library file does NOT exist, you are correct in that assumption..
    To do my backup - I copied only the music folder to the external drive.  I apologize, I do not know which release of the Vx.x tages they are... I can see the files and the proper tags when I go thru file manager on Win7 pro.  I attempted the restore via loading the music folder.  I have as you suggested disabled the Keep and Copy options.. to no avail.  I wish I could send you an external drive and then you could or at least attempt it as well.
    I am terribly sorry how I can't seem to follow you technically.  and the sad thing is I work with computers too.
    Blessings to you for putting up with my incompetence.

  • Upgrading Unity 4.0.5 to version 8 and replacing the server. Need advice for most efficient upgrade path.

    Hello,
    I need to upgrade Unity 4.0.5 without failover to Unity 8, and we are replacing the server as well.
    What would be the most efficient upgrade path for this?
    Thanks!!

    Brian,
    The most efficient path is to use COBRAS.  I have a number of posts explaining the overall process.  At the highest-level, this allows you to build out the new Unity 8x environment, get it integrated with AD/Exchange, and then build out configurations that don't migrate over (there are a few which are highlighted in the COBRAS help).  From there, you migrate data over from the 4x system.  There may or may not be a few steps along the way but they are outlined in numerous posts I've contributed to regarding COBRAS and also in the COBRAS Help which is located at www.ciscounitytools.com.

  • Efficient loading and rendering of multiple images: Need advice

    I have an application that allows the user to customize and display full-screen consoles of various information. The console can have a background image. Additionally, the console can contain any number of components...one of which is a "Image" component.
    Both the console background and the image component can refer to multiple images...if multiple images are referenced, the displayed image switches every X seconds.
    The application has a repository into which users can load their images so that they are managed by the app.
    Now, my problem:
    In the old version of my application, I loaded ALL images into memory at startup and when users added them to the repository. This way, each image was available for display very quickly. When it needed to be displayed, I'd just scale it appropriately and display it. Problem is that this used a LOT of memory...I have the full image in memory AND the scaled image in memory.
    In the newer version of my application, I now load images from disk on demand. When an image needs to be displayed, it's loaded from disk, scaled and displayed. This uses MUCH less memory...but I'm finding that it's slow and can block my user interface from updating...
    I guess I'm probably looking at something in between where I cache the images that MIGHT be displayed by a console. That's better than loading ALL images into memory, and it's better than ALWAYS going to disk. It's just a matter of the logic around finding out what images need to be loaded...loading them in a background thread, blah blah blah.
    Anyone had to deal with a problem like this? Any suggestions?
    Here's my class that acts as the proxy to the image on disk:
    public class ImageProxy extends PersistentComponent {
         public static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
         public static final String PROP_URL = "URL";
         private URL url;
         public ImageProxy (URL url, String name) throws InstantiationException {
              this.setName(name);
              this.setURL(url);
         public void setURL (URL url) {
              URL oldURL = this.url;
              this.url = url;
              this.changes.firePropertyChange(PROP_URL, oldURL, url);
         public static ImageProxy createImageProxy(File file, XMLParseLog parseLog)
                   throws InstantiationException {
              parseLog.inform("Creating new image");
              parseLog.right();
              ImageProxy newImageProxy = null;
              try {
                   newImageProxy = new ImageProxy(file.toURL(), file.getName());
                   newImageProxy.setSizeOnDisk(file.length());
                   newImageProxy.setLastModified(new Date(file.lastModified()));
              } catch (InstantiationException e) {
                   parseLog.error(e.getMessage());
                   parseLog.left();
                   throw e;
              } catch (MalformedURLException e) {
                   parseLog.error(e.getMessage());
                   parseLog.left();
                   throw new InstantiationException(e.getMessage());
              parseLog.left();
              return newImageProxy;
          * Returns the theImage.
          * @return ImageIcon
         public BufferedImage getImage() {
              try {
                   return ImageIO.read(this.url);
              } catch (IOException e) {
                   return new BufferedImage(100,100,BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
         public URL getURL() {
              return url;
    }The other option (and it's an easier option) I was thinking of was to have the image proxy class cache the BufferedImage itself upon the first request.
    That way, only used images are loaded into memory. I could also then have a thread that would occasionally sweep through all the image proxies and clear out the buffered images of the ones that haven't been requested in X minutes.

    I had a similar problem, but with prepared SQL statements--Our solution was similar to your last comment. Without going into the details, we basically made a circular queue that cached the prepared statements, in the system we were using a the time you could only have a set number of prepared statements--and it was not very many, the queue had an aging function so when we had to have a new prepared statement we would use the handle to the one that had the most ancient last referenced time. In this manner we made sure that those statements that were being referenced frequently were the ones that were available.
    This does have a few weaknesses:
    1 - you still have to stringently manage your limited resources, in your case you're going
    to have to tune and do trial and error to find that sweet spot to balance your app.
    2 - if you have a bunch of 1 timers, then there is no benefit.

  • CC update is REALLY confusing and problem filled... need advice please

    I have 2 macs. On one, I just clicked on the update all in the CC desktop notification...what a mistake that was! LR would not work at all and PS installed a new version and (I think) updated my old version. But the new version does not have all my plugins working with it - it asked me if I wanted to migrate something (presets or something) and I said yes, but that did not seem to work either.
    My question are:
    1- do I really want to update Photoshop CC AND Photoshop cc 2014???
    2- is there no way to just update the existing version so all the plugins work without an hour or so of figuring out how to reinstall  them???
    The LR problem I finally solved by downloading 5.5 manually and manually installing over the bad CC desktop install.
    whew... what a bungle from Adobe...they are so proud of their new glitzy Web site and new apps and can't even update existing ones with out disaster... I've turned off auto download forever !!!
    thanks for the help and for letting me vent ... so much anxiety and wasted time...
    cheers,
    tom

    The main cause of slow system is due to certain heavy applications running in the background
    We agree on that.
    or because of duplicate and hidden files.
    Files visible, hidden, the same as other files, do not do anything, unless they happen to cause the disk to be completely or nearly full.  Otherwise they are just 1's and 0's.  They are passive (speaking as a paid file system developer).
    These files can't be easily removed.
    If they can't be removed, then they are essential to the proper operation of the operating system (such as /private/var/vm/swapfie(s)).  And if you have huge swapfile(s), then it is an indication of running too many RAM hungry apps concurrently, or a Mac that could use more RAM.
    So I think using speed up Mac software is the best solution.
    Hang around these forums long enough and you will see that in many cases those speed up, clean up, anti-malware apps "ARE" the "certain heavy applications running in the background" to use your own words.  It has been the experience of the long time forum contributors that once these 3rd party utilities are removed, most performance issues and system panics go away.

  • Dell Inprision 2330 Backup and Recovery error message 0x4001100200001005

    A week ago, there were problems with the computer Dell Inprision 2330, and I'm using a Dell Backup and Recovery to restore the disk C to the image stored on the dvd disks. 3 days ago the computer began to hang when windows starts. I decided again to restore the system with dvd, but this time got the error message 0x4001100200001005.
    Tried to restore the image to another drive, but the error appears again.
    Other recovery media then dvd-disks "dell backup and recovery" I don't have.
    Please help.

    I was very disappointed with this buggy system recovery. After I got tired of trying to restore the system, I found a post "Download Windows 8.1 Retail and OEM.iso". Did everything according to instructions. Now the computer is running. Activation performed automatically.

  • FIRST TIMER: Backups and recovery. [W530]

    First time ever attempting to create recovery media, so the questions may be numerous.
    For the first time creating backup media for Factory Recovery image, how much space is required on the medium?
    I would prefer to have it stored onto a USB stick because they are much easier to store and keep track of...
    Also, If i wanted to switch from the 500gb HDD that I ordered with the thinkpad to a SSD in the future would running the Factory Recovery media onto that drive create an exact image compared to the one on the HDD (included with preloaded partition "Q: Lenovo_Recovery")  If not, how would I go about transfering the data?
    W530 i7-3840Qm. Quad K1000M. 16GB RAM. 16GB mSSD(expresscache). 500gb HDD

    The Backup program copies the data in your Windows partition to another drive, so you need as much free space in your backup drive as you have used space in your Windows partition. It also takes a correspondingly long time to complete, so keep that in mind.
    In order to make an exact copy of the whole drive, you need imaging software like Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost, or something similar.
    Thinkpad W530, i7-3720QM, 1920x1080 screen, 32GB RAM, dual SSDs (Samsung 830, Crucial M4 mSATA), Quadro K2000M, 9-cell battery, DVD burner, backlit keyboard, Bluetooth, Intel 6300 wireless card
