Dell Dimension E510

I would appreciate assistance to determine how to resolve a problem with PC reboots.   I have not been able to determine the exact frequency of the reboot, however, I am aware that the PC stays up at least 15 minutes sometimes hours and then reboots.
The PC reboots and after login I see the message:
IDT Audio system tray application has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.  If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
Please provide any recommendations.    The system is configured with Windows XP Professional and has 512M memory.
Regards,

I have an E510.
The IDT tray issue probably has nothing to do with your reboot problem.  If it's rebooting by itself there are several possibilities. One is the power supply, there have been an abnormal amount of E510/5150 power supplies failing (several hundered reported on this forum alone).  Normally when it fails the indication is a flashing amber power light but since it's rebooting itself a power supply issue could cause this.  There can be many other reasons, hardware - e.g. CPU overheating if it's not getting adequate cool air flow - a computer desk compartment is a worst case for air flow (have you ever cleaned out the dust from inside the PC and the CPU cooling assembly?) or could be a Windows issue.  You'll have to eliminate potential problem areas such as the cooling issues first and then go on to other, and it may be a "shotgun" approach where you start replacing parts (and if it gets to that I would start with the power supply which is a standard ATX style - not a Dell custom).
On the "IDT" issue.  You shoud NOT be using IDT drivers or software for the SigmaTel Integrated Audio.  Although IDT is the new name for SigmaTel (IDT bought SigmaTel about a year ago) we have seen a lot of problems with IDT labeled drivers, and in one case Microsoft "pushed" out an IDT Codec update last spring and all the SigmaTel audio's failed in one way or another and the ONLY way to fix it was to either do a System Restore back to a date prior to installing the IDT Codec or a complete reinstall.  The ONLY drivers you should use are the SigmaTel drivers from either the Dell Resource CD that came with the PC or from the Dell downloads for the E510/5150 (the 5150 is the European version of the E510).
I replaced the stock Dell power supply in my E510, before it failed, as I did some hardware upgrades and added additional hardware including an upgraded Video card and needed more power.  I have a 550 watt Antec Tru Power Trio in my E510.

  • Video card dell dimension 3000

    Hey, everybody.
Im planning to buy a new video card for my ; dell dimension 3000,  Intel(R) , Celeron(R) CPU 2.4GHz, 2.00 gb of ram, and I believe power supply is 250 W.
    So here is the bunch of questions;
    1. Seems like my computer uses a pci type memory cards, my question here is can I use these wide known pci e cards?
    2. Second one is I seen that there are different sizes of video cards out there for sale, so how do I figure out which one I should use, I mean is there a maximum number of mb that my computer supports or I could use any size of video card?
..and I think so far I do not have more questions about my video memory card purchase.
*all help would be appreciated Thanks*

    1. you will not be able to use a PCI-E card in the Dimension 3000.
    2. Your choices are very limted on PCI videocards and the performance increase is not worth the money that a new card will cost you. You could go with a 512mb PCI card but with the slow celeron processor and and low end power supply. You still will not be able to play of the new games that are out right now.
It's time for a new computer.

I downloaded the latest version of iTunes to Windows XP then connected my first generation iPhone to the different USB ports available on the Dell Dimension 4100, not one of them allowed the iphone to be recognized.  The Troubleshooter did not locate drivers other than what are already in the system.  Is there a work around?  Is it the iphone or Windows XP?  Where do I locate drivers?  Why can't my devices just get along?

  • Connections for Inspire 5200 on a Dell Dimension

Is anyone aware of the proper connections to utilize the built-in 5.1 audio on a Dell Dimension 8400?
Are there any suggestions on which speaker system would be the best for a Dell Dimension if I should decide to replace my speakers?
Dell's online owner's manual shows that the black jack is for surround and the white jack is for the center. I have the jack for the speaker system's FRONT speakers plugged into the surround jack and the CENTER/WOOFER plugged into the center jack.
It would be nice to have real 5.1 sound coming from my computer since it's supposed to be able to handle it without using an Audigy card. I have an Audigy card in another computer, but I don't want to pull it if I don't have to.

    cconklin,
Not sure about your onboard audio but you should connect the onboard audio Front jack to the speaker system front input jack, Rear/Surround jack to the speaker rear input jack and lastly the Center jack to the speaker Center/Subwoofer input.

  • Unable to install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on a Dell Dimension 4400

I just bought a Dell Dimension 4400 computer. I tried many times to install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on it. My operating system is Windows XP Professional. It seems nothing to do with the Operating system because I installed the database on a HP computer with Windows XP professional. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

There are many documented issues regarding P4 processors with [OUI] Oracle Universal Installer for Oracle 8.1.x
Oracle Metalink has some recommended patches and etc but I can only comment what is working for me. Keep in mind I only install these clients, I don't work on databases that actually use them. So if there is another piece that is dependant on the java version shipped with the cd, this may not solve everything.
Workaround #1 [To install and be able to run OUI at a later time]
1.) Install the Sun Java Runtime 1.2.2.11 [http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.2/jre/download-windows.html].
    a) Make sure that the system path enviroment (Properties of My Computer, not inside a cmd window) has c:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.2\bin and c:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.2\bin\classic before any Oracle related path. Don't have any other JRE in the path.
2.) Copy the cd to a network source or local directory and do a search for all "symcjit.dll" and rename "symcjit.old"
3.) Run the installer, this should install the client
Workaround #2 [Just to install.. not for mass deployment]
If you have access to an Oracle 9i CD, use the OUI 2 installer that comes with that and redirect the "source" to where your 8.1.7 client is.

  • Solaris 8 on Dell Dimension 4100 (**ACPI Tables)

I downloaded Solaris 8 Binaries and created Device Configuration Assistant bootable diskette. When I try to boot up my system (Dell Dimension 4100) with the bootable diskette I created to install solaris on one partition, it pops up an error message before the device configuration assistant gets loaded. It says
WARNING:ACPI Tables not in reclaim memory
    prom_panic:kmem_free block already free.
Could anyone guide me how do I get over it??

After thrashing for 2 weeks with the onboard 7880 SCSI and onboard 7890 RAID controllers, I was finally able to load up Solaris 8 on a Poweredge 2400. (4/01 build)
The only way I was able to do it was configure the server as below:
7880 SCSI: CD-ROM drive only device on this controller, set to ID 5.
7890 RAID controller: Disabled. Dont' believe Dell or Adaptec, this card will not work with Solaris 7 or 8. Even with the RAID chip removed and running as standard SCSI controller, it still would not work.
Adaptec 2940 U2W: 9G Quantum Atlas V drive with HP SureStore DAT 24i drive.
PERC II RAID controller yanked out of older 4100 system, 3 drives running RAID 5.
Important note: Do not attach anything to the 7880 controller besides the CD. The system will not boot if attempting to boot to the HD or if you attempt to boot from CD, it will hang at the adp.bef file.
    Hope this helps..

  • Connecting MacBook Pro to Dell Dimension

I have a MacBook Pro, a Dell Dimension and a 24" Dell Monitor. Im trying to connect the two computers to one monitor, keyboard and mouse. Its my understanding that a KVM switch should work but my main concern is that Im trying to use a wireless mac keyboard and a wireless mac mighty mouse. Also, Im going to need to have enough outputs on the switch to be able to share the speakers, a USB printer (Epson R220) and the USB card reader thats built into the monitor. Is there a KVM switch that will be able to handle this?
Is there a better way to be able to share these computers?
    Please help!

Wheather the wireless keyboard and mouse will work seems to depend on the adapter / bluetooth software stack being used.
Some people have had success with the DLink DBT-120 adapter, some don't. I have tried it with DBT-120 as well and it did not work. However, I tried it with the version that is currently sold in retail stores, which is the "C1" build version. This one uses a Bluetooth software stack from Toshiba and that seems to be the issue. The B1 version that some people where successful with apparently uses a WIDCOMM stack, and that seems to be the key.
Now, some people are saying that you have to have the DBT-120 adapter and a certain old version of the WIDCOMM stack, 1.4.2.10, to get it to work. But after searching the web quite a bit, I believe I found a better solution that will work with ANY bluetooth adapter (or built in bluetooth) that uses ANY version of the WIDCOMM stack.
    Here is what you do:
    1. Install you Bluetooth adapter as described by the manufacturer and reboot your machine.
    2. Switch the Apple wireless mouse on into pairing mode and watch the lower right side of your screen closely for messages from windows. There will be a message saying that pairing failed because of a missing code. Click on that message and in the window that opens enter 0000 as code. Now your mouse should work.
    3. Press Win Start button, choose Run and then type regedit and press enter to access windows registry editor.
    4. In the registry editor search for and select -> HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Widcomm\BtConfig\General
    5. Set the key 'PinCodeWord' to a decimal value of 1111
    6. Set the key 'UseFixedPin' to a decimal value of 1
    7. Then attempt pairing. When you get to the greyed PIN screen type 1111 using OTHER keyboard THAN Apple Bluetooth keyboard.
    8. Press the Return key on the Apple keyboard on the number pad, not the regular Retrun key.
    7. Enjoy your nice Apple wireless keyboard and mouse.
I am currently typing this with the Apple wireless keyboard and mouse on a HP laptop. The bluetooth adapter is from Belkin and the WIDCOMM stack is 4.x.

  • Dell Dimension desktop sometimes won't communicate with my HP Photosmart 6510 wireless printer

At random times, when trying to print from Dell Dimension desktop to HP Photosmart 6510 wireless printer, I get a message that the computer can't communicate with the printer.  The printer shows that it is connected to the Internet. I haven't changed any settings.   Each time this happens, I unplug the printer and router, but it doesn't fix the problem.  After about 20 minutes or so, it prints normally.  It always happens at the most inopportune times.  Any suggestions about how I can keep this from recurring?

These settings are for setting up your wireless printer to stay connected to your router, keeps wireless devices better connected and makes your router secure and hack proof.
    1. Set a static IP in the printer (see step 6) outside the DHCP range of the router (check your manual).
    2. Verify in the printer that 'Auto Off' is disabled.  Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by going to the
printers IP address in your browsers address bar, click  Settings Tab/Auto Off.  Or use the Printer
        Assistant, Printer Home Page (EWS).
In the router:  (Refer to your router manual for information)
    3. Use a fixed wireless channel like 1,6 or 11, never 'auto', try channel 1 first then the rest.
    4. Set router to 20Mhz only, or 145Mbps depending on router.
    5. Always use WPA2-AES (Personal) encryption, but you can try ‘mixed’ mode.
    6. Disable WPS and never use it and disable UPnP for the routers security.  Nobody can hack your
system now and helps with wireless connectivity (if you want to know why, search the web).
    7. If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz bands), make sure the SSID’s are NOT the same,
they must be different for all bands, even for any Guest networks.
    8. Save all settings.  Power off both, wait 5 mins.  Power on router wait 3 mins.
    9. Power on printer and verify it reconnects to router.

    Hi Ian404,
Sounds like the issue is with the computer. Have you tried uninstalling the printer, and then reinstall using the current software?
Try using the scrubber built into the CD or Download.
    From Original installation CD:
    1. Insert CD into drive, and then cancel the installer
    2. Open My Computer, and then right click on the CD drive and chose open
    3. Open folder Util
    4. Open folder CCC
    5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
    6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
    7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools
    8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player
    http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

  • Solaris 10 - Installing Errors - Dell Dimension 4100

    Hello All,
I am tring to install Solaris 10 on a Dell Dimension 4100 system. I am getting an error, then the system reboots.
I am able to boot the Solaris 10 (03/05) DVD, I downloaded.
I get prompted : "Type of Installation you want to perform"
No matter which option I chose - I get the same results.
I get the msg: "Booting Kernel/Unix"
I then get the msg : "Configuring devices"
The screen flashing with information, then the computer reboots.
    Computer Specs:
    PIII 866mhz
    256MB RAM
    ATI 32MB Radeon
    40G HD
    DVD Writer
    CD Writer
    3COM NIC
    SB Live
I checked in the BIOS - nothing about ACPI.
I am able to install multiple distros of Linux with no issues. I have not try to install any of the BSD's.
I tried to install Solaris 8, but I was unable. The issue was an open memory slot. I have 1 256mb memory card.
I was able to install Solaris 9 but I had an issue with a virus on my Windows side. I had to completly format the drive.
I have read alot aboiut Solaris 10 and wanted to give it try. I have installed via VMware.
I am tring to install only the Solaris 10 - no other OS will be on the HD.
    Thank you in Advance,
    Harry

I don't know why Solaris is so good at finding faulty ram. Windows seems to instal but will crash randomly (Nothing unusual there :) so it's hard to say the memory is bad). I don't really use Linux that much so Ive never run it on a machine with faulty ram.
If we have a machine which is acting up in windows we simply try to boot solaris. If it fails then we change the ram and it usually fixes the problem. It's just our experience.
I hope that the second sim fixes your problem
    Good Luck

  • Dma for dell dimension 4700 sata

Hello, I am running SJD release 2. I installed xine for wmv and dvd. The dvd plays but the video is jerky. hdparm -d1 /dev/sr0 doesn't work with "device doesn't support dma". same for the hard drive hda. In order to install and boot I have to set the bios hard drive operation (sata, pata) to "combination" or I won't see the hard drive to boot from. It will not boot with the bios drive operation setting set to "normal". I just found out from the dell site that dma will not work with the drive operation setting in "combination". The box has 8 dma channels too. Am I SOL on DMA for the dvd and hard drive with SJD on a dell dimension 4700? I saw a patch at sunsolve for dell sata devices, but the page said all the SJD patches were at the online update, so they were for solaris and I had no access to it anyways. Does anyone know of an SJD release 2 equivalent patch for this? I haven't been able to connect to the online update for the last several days, whereas a few months ago I was able to. I can get to the site to download them manually, but have no idea which one or how to search for it.

Dell's really don't mind having other hardware installed...in fact, it's actually very easy to do. In the two dells that I've owned, they both took new memory, new hard disks, and some assorted PCI cards. I'm still unsure why everyone says Dells suck with upgrading.
The fact that the problem occurred on three different computers shows me that the card is dead. I'm not surprised the card was detected on one machine, as that happened to me when my card died. Sometimes it would be detected, other times it wouldn't. Sometimes I could almost get through the driver installs, other times it wouldn't do anything.

  • ACPI tables, Resource conflict, Dell Dimension 8100 - need Solaris 7

I just bought a new Dell Dimension 8100 and I am getting the same error as SunilPP, "ACPI tables not in reclaim memory" and "Recourse conflict, both devices are added NON ACPI device ...".
One of the solutions suggested on this forum is to install Solaris 7 and upgrade to 8. Does anyone know where I can download Solaris 7 for Intel?
    Thanks,
    mraible

Solaris 7 is not available on line. This can be purchased on-line at www.store.sun.com or 1-800-sun-0404.
BTW, I don't believe you can upgrade to Solaris 8. The ACPI support code was introduced in Solaris 8 -- part of DCA (Device Configuration
Assitant) code where it provides additional PCI device info if the
motherboard supports it. This WARNING: ACPI Tables Not In Reclaim
Memory is a bug yet to be fixed.
You could load Solaris 7 and wait for the fix, then load a new OS which
    has the fix.
