Dell Inspiron 1521 suspend/hibernate not working

Hi all, new Arch user here. I've tried working through the Acpid and Pm-utils wiki articles, but it's all just too confusing. I installed both the programs, and when I run either pm-suspend or pm-hibernate as root, All I get is my screen goes black. I press keys, open close the lid, but it just doesn't do anything, and power remains on when testing pm-hibernate. The only way out of it is to hard-reboot the laptop.
I am not sure where to start with all this. Here is my log from running pm-suspend:
Initial commandline parameters:

Sun May 22 11:52:39 MDT 2011: performing suspend

karol wrote:Can poweroff and reboot successfully?
I was so happy for the successful suspend and I didn't check the hibernation or reboot.
I read your post and I checked it at once.
Fortunately, everything works fine.
penguin geek wrote:I applied the fix as described on the site, and suspend works! Sadly, hibernate does not. It still does not power down
I use the uswsusp method for suspending to disk: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Su … ate-script

If you purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive, it will only work with select Apple devices. It won't work, for example, on my Late 2011 model that has a SuperDrive built-in, but it will work with an Air, Retina model, new 'drive-less' iMacs, etc.
As far as I know, though, you can only hack the drive to work with some other Apple devices, but not with Windows PCs. Which is a shame as other, less expensive DVD/CD devices will work with just about any machine.

  • Dell laptop headphone jack does not work when playing audio and video in Firefox 27

My problem is similar to the one posted in this thread: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/986978?esab=a&s=laptop+headphones+don%27t+work+with+firefox&r=2&fpa=1&as=s
I believe it has little to nothing to do with extensions.
I have just installed Firefox 27 on the Dell Inspiron 3520 laptop of a friend. She is an unsophisticated user who has a computer for email, simple web browsing, and watching YouTube and other online videos. Because she frequently seems to end up with junk on her machine, I wanted to switch her over to Firefox so I could install ad and script blockers that would hopefully slow down the frequency of adware and malware roosting in her system.
The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 3520 with an Intel celeron CPU (64-bit), running Windows 8. There are standard end-user applications installed (Adobe Reader, VLC Media Player, etc.), but no tweaking utilities, etc. The audio drivers are Cirrus Logic High Definition Audio.
I've been troubleshooting the laptop today trying to track down why the integrated speakers continue to work when the headphones are plugged in, with no sound coming through the headphones. Because I had run a series of virus / malware / adware scans just before installing Firefox, I thought I had mistakenly deleted some system audio files.
It finally became clear after toggling multiple settings, playing with Windows and Dell sound settings, and experimenting, that the headphone audio jack still works as it should in the system itself (for example, playing videos through VLC Media Player) and in Internet Explorer. It is only in Firefox that plugging in the headphones does not send audio through the headphones nor cut out the integrated speakers.
Sometimes there is a silencing of the integrated speakers for a few seconds, but then the audio kicks in again. (I am using YouTube and a certain movie streaming website to test the audio).
However, if the headphones are plugged in before starting the videos, the sound comes through the headphones, but unplugging the headphones, then reinserting them, stimulates problem again. Not only that, but then in YouTube the video will stall and can't be restarted until the page is reloaded.
Again, this is a fresh Firefox install of less than 24 hours, with only Adblock, Adblock Plus Pop-up Addition, Flashblock, and NoScript installed. There are no themes installed and most of the Options are the defaults that are set upon installation.
I have both disabled the add-ons and uninstalled them entirely before testing the headphone funtionality. In both instances the problem persisted. I've also uninstalled and let Windows re-install the Cirrus audio drivers.
Does anyone else have any insight into this problem, and any potential solutions other than "start in Safe Mode" and "reset Firefox"?

Firefox can switch audio devices within ~ a + or - 10 minute period or so (Just a guess). At which point it latches onto the audio device and will never change until the entire process is shutdown (read last paragraph, there is an exception)
Ive had this problem for a few months now, at least. And I switch back and forth from my sound system and my wireless USB headset.
If anything will fix this i believe it would be disabling "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" in the properties of your default audio device, but i doubt it. I think this is an issue regarding the code in firefox itself.
I'd like to see this turned into a default feature, being able to disable and enable the ability to stay on whichever device was the default at the time of launch, or to always play on the current default device, even if its changed. That or being able to choose a specific device/devices (WOULD LOVE TO THIS).
Other than that I dont really have a solution, and I kind of doubt anyone will unless its addressed in the next update.
Oh I thought of one solution that doesnt require restarting firefox, disable the current audio device and the sound will automatically switch to the next available device. Or possibly when a new device is introduced?? I havent done much testing on the matter though. This is just my best guess based on my personal experience with firefox.

  • Hibernate not working but why

I have followed the wiki and added "resume=/dev/sda2" to my kernel paramteters. (sda2 being my swap partition). I have added the 'resume' hook to mkinitcpio.conf, and also regenerated it with "mkinitcpio -p linux" as outlined in the wiki page on suspend/hibernate.
When i run 'systemctl hibernate' it appears to actually go into hibernation, but then when i turn it on again it boots from scratch.
Oddly I notice that in dmesg it shows my kernel parameters but 'resume=/dev/sda2' is missing ! I don't understand why/how, and I even got rid of all other boot entires with uefibootmgr and double checked which the current one was, and it shows right there that the current one does have 'resume' appended to the kernel parameters, yet in dmesg it's missing ! If that's unclear what I mean is
from efibootmgr (note #0006 which is current and first in boot order, has the resume paramter added):

im sure i've messed something up... is there anywhere else kernel parameters are stored? Or is there some command I'm forgetting to 'refresh' efibootmgr after adding the new line, sort of like how you have to do /sbin/lilo after changing lilo config? As you can probably tell I am booting EFI direct from kernel, no bootloader installed.
Or maybe I should remove Boot0000 entirely? But again it says BootCurrent is 0006 so I don't get it!!

  • Suspendable plug not working in portal

    Hello
    I am having two DC.
DC 1 is an web dynpro application which has a suspend plug (ToDC2) in its interface view.
DC 2 is another web dynpro application which is having a default inbound plug in its interface view.
Now, I am using URL of DC2 application to navigate from DC1 to DC2.
    String urlToTargetApp =
         WDURLGenerator.getApplicationURL(deployableObjectPart, urlParameters);
    wdThis.wdGetApp1ApplInterfaceViewController()
         .wdFirePlugToDC2(urlToTargetApp);
This scenario is working fine if I execute my application directly outside portal.
But in portal it gives me following error :
com.sap.tc.webdynpro.services.exceptions.WDRuntimeException: Suspend-Plug must no be triggered when running in portal. Use portal navigation instead to navigate to another application!
Now, I have read it in SDN contributed articles that above error must have come only if i would have been using an exit plug instead of suspend plug.
In case of suspend plug you need to just set an application property "sap.suspendable.application = true" if using application within portal, as this will make it work.
But it is not working here !
    Any comments please.

  • [SOLVED] Dell XPS m1530 internal microphone not working

I have installed alsamixer and have my sound drivers and output working great. I am running Arch x86_64 and installed bin32-skype. It appears the internal microphone on the laptop is not working. I have already gone into alsamixer and enabled each capture device and turned each up to full volume. I have tried testing with both audacity and skype, and neither appear to work. Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

  • Systemd: Suspend and Hibernate not working

    Hi,
When I try to hibernate my Notebook using systemd with 'systemctl hibernate', it sometimes (from time to time it even works) fails with the error message "a dependency job for hibernate.target failed". In the journal I see the following:

    :x
Any ideas? Furthermore, during hibernate (when it works) my screen first gets black, the system comes back and only then it really hibernates.
Others suggest switching to linux-lts. Does that really make sense? Isn't this a systemd issue?
suspend sometimes fails to work either (screen gets blank, but system weaks up after a few seconds again):

Thanks, but I do not call systemd-sleep manually, I just do the ordinary "systemctl hibernate".
Unfortunately, the error "A dependency job for hibernate.target failed. See 'journalctl -xn' for details" just happened again. Alas, I'm not able to debug it according to the manual (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/sy … emd_errors). When I try to get the log messages for the PID that causes hibernate.service to fail, I don't see anything suspicious in the logs:

  • Hibernate not working on my MacBook Pro - it just turns off

Ive had this machine for 2 years, and it has NEVER managed to hibernate.
The battery runs for about an hour, then at about 20% left it just shuts down the machine, losing all my work. I have looked everywhere for an option to change this, but cant find one.
Its driving me mad - I have lost so much work its not funny. Now I carry the power supply everywhere, and can never use the battery. I want my Dell back!
I am shocked to learn that some other people dosn't have this problem, when the machine powers off when the battery runs out, and they power it back on when recharging, they get the same state as before the machine shut itself down. WOW!
    I did this:
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
    And got this:
    hibernatemode 3
    Which seems correct.
Also, I hardly ever suspend the machine by shutting the lid either - many times when I open the lid after, the screen is blank, but everything else is still working. no about of prodding will get the screen to work again, and I have to hold down the power button to reboot. I think the problem is if it gets woken up while the book is still closed it goes into headless mode, and there is no way to get out of it.
The macs sleep handling is much worse than XP, and that was pretty bad.
    Ideas?
    Simon.

    hobbss,
When I do the terminal thing (aka grep hibernate) I too get those results. Have you tried reseting the SMC. The System Management Controller is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is on the logic board of the computer. As the name implies, it is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping.
Over time, the settings in the System Management Controller may become unusable, which can result in operational anomalies with the computer. Examples include not turning on, not waking from sleep, not charging the battery, or not recognizing the AC Adapter, among others.
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the computer's battery.
    3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
    4. Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
    5. Press the power button to restart the computer

  • Suspend / Sleep not working anymore

    Hi all,
for some short time now, my Mac Mini (Intel) doesn't go to suspend anymore. When I try to put it to sleep with the remote control, it powers down as expected but immediatly powers on again.
I tried to look in the logs (sudo dmesg) and all I could find was som entry from bluetooth. Bluetooth is disabled, though. The only bluetooth thingy running is the bluetooth applikation in the menubar.
    Am I missing something?
    Cold-1

    Hi Pos,
thanks for the fast reply. I tried everything in your list. I even disabled almost all widgets, killed all unneccessary processes (SmartMon, Quickslver, iCal, ...), disconnected all USB devices, but no luck. I also looked at the log again and I must admit that I just went through it to fast. It is not the bluetooth device that causes the awake, it's... I just don't know.
    here is an exerpt:

The state change from sleep to awake is really instantaniously.
The strange thing is, the sleeping mode that kicks in with the screensaver works flawlessly, only the sleeping mode activated by the remote or the Apple menu does not.
I am very close to reinstall everything.

  • Hibernate not working with linux 3.7

    Greetings folks.
Since kernel 3.7 I have not been able to hibernate my computer. Suspension, though, works fine.
I do not know how to log that kernel panic, I manage to shoot a video with my mobile phone and apparently there is a
    WARNING: at arch/x86/kernel/smp.c:119 native_smp_send_reschedule
    and
    kernel BUG at kernel/hrtimer.c:1259!
I would like to provide more detailed information, please, tell me how I could log that KP in a file and if you need anything else.
Needless to say that with the kernel 3.6 everything works fine.

It seems that it has been fixed in 3.7.5. From the changelog:
The 'intel_idle_probe' probes the CPU and sets the CPU notifier.
But if later on during the module initialization we fail (say
in cpuidle_register_driver), we stop loading, but we neglect
to unregister the CPU notifier.  This means that during CPU
hotplug events the system will fail:
This patch fixes that by moving the CPU notifier registration
as the last item to be done by the module.

  • IPad and iPhone on Dell Precision 6500 USB3 ports: not working

    Hello,
I just got a new laptop (a Dell precision 6500) with 2 USB3 ports. Unfortunately, when I try to connect my iPad or iPhone 4G to these ports, the device will enter a loop of connection/disconnection or simply have a "device not recognized" message.
No other devices connected to these ports have any issue (I tried disk, mouse, keyboard and scanner). When I connect the iPad/iPhone to the "legacy" USB 2.0 or to the USB2/eSATA port, they work just fine.
    Any idea ?

Look like those devices don't like USB 3. Your the first one that I have seen post anything concerning Apple devices and USB 3.

I have unable to scan from my L 7500 since it was installed. HP support's comment was "known problem". Not helpful. Has anyone been able to get functionality working? Thank you.

    Hello BRUCEBERGER,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to see if I can help get the Officejet L7700 series printer up and scanning for you. To best assist you, please answer the below questions.
How is the printer connected to the computer, USB, Ethernet or Wireless?
What happens when you try to scan, is there an error, etc?
Will the printer print from the computer?
Is the printer able to make a copy from the front panel menu?
In the mean time, run the Print and Scan Dr and let me know the results / steps it goes through in attempt to "Fix Scanning".
    Cheers,
    JERENDS

  • Dell T7910 installed GTX 980 - not working

Installing a Nvidia GTX 980 video card into a T7910, the computer will not boot. Just sits there with the power on. Power light on, no indications of anything else.
    Any suggestions?

  • MSI X58 Platinum - power button after hibernate not working

    Hi,
I have MSI X58 Platinum board that is having a problem recovering from hibernate state.
When I press the power button, it will turn on for about 2 seconds before shutting off again. Nothing is shown on the screen.
After pressing the power button several times more, it will then power up again and wake up from the hibernation. Everything is back to normal after that.
It used to work fine where single press to the power button is all it takes to wake up.
Has anyone experience this problem? It has no problem going to hibernate state (S3).
    Thanks.
