Dell Inspiron 15r 5520 FORGOTTEN?!

Hello,
At some point last year I purchased from a retailer in Romania, this Dell Inspiron 15r 5520 laptop for the not so small price of 3000 lei, local currency, which at today's exchange rate equals $760.
The laptop worked OK-ish and I was pretty happy with it until recently.
You see, I don't use this laptop all the time as I have a workstation at home so I just tend to use it once in a while. I decided to wipe the laptop's memory clean and do a fresh instal of Windows 7 64 bit and all the drivers about 3 weeks ago. Since then, I've been having A LOT OF ISSUES due to the fact that the drivers on this machine ar so old that they don't really work any more with ANY GAME! Mind you, I had not played games on this machine that much before but when I did, I did encounter huge issues with AMD Switchable graphics not working properly and the game ending up running on the blasted Intel HD4000.
Now this is the end of my patience though! I am tired of having to MAKE DO with something I HAVE PAID A LOT OF MONEY FOR just because DELL WON'T BOTHER TO UPDATE THE BLASTED DRIVERS!
I am tired of having issues every tine I try to play a game on this machine, that hardware wise can more than deal with that game. The only game that I am trying to play is EVE Online.
I have tried downloading the latest Intel HD4000 Drivers and AMD Drivers for the AMD 7670M Graphics Card that I have in the machine. I have tried to install them but they didn't work properly because of the way DELL BUILDS AND ISSUES THEIR DRIVERS!
Does DELL HAVE ANY FIX ON THIS? Any indications on how to use the latest drivers without the whole thing crashing? OR DO I JUST THROW THIS OUT THE WINDOW AND GO WITH A MORE SERIOUS MANUFACTURER?
I am serious disappointed with DELLs services and drivers so far.
Please assist.
Thank you!

First, you do not have a system with a dedicated video card.  You have a hybrid AMD-Intel MUX-less system - software controlled hybrid video.
The AMD GPU is simply a co-processor - only the Intel GPU has a physical connection to the display panel, so ALL video data, even if it is processed through the AMD GPU, passes through the Intel GPU on its way to the screen.  The Intel GPU will always show active, and primary in the system.
Does the Catalyst Control Panel allow the selection of the AMD GPU?  If it does, the system is working properly (though note that Windows will still see the Intel GPU as primary, as will most diagnostic test  utilities).  Second thing:  not all games support hybrid video, and even among those that do, there are often settings that need to be changed.
Finally, you must temper your expectations of the video chip in the system - it is not a gaming GPU or system of any caliber.  It's now about 3-4 years old, and the GPU wasn't cutting edge even when it was new.  It's a low- to mid-range system with a low- to mid-range GPU for its time.
As for drives, you can source them from Intel and AMD (but note that updating one demands you update the other, as they must work in tandem).  The hardware in the system cannot control the GPUs -- that's done by the software (drivers).
That's the thing. I CANNOT UPDATE THEM AT ALL. And both Intel and AMD pointed out to Dell saying that because of the way Dell delivers the drivers the up to date drivers will NEVER EVER work when I e-mailed them for support.
If I update both drivers, which I have tried FYI, as I HAVE MENTIONED IN MY ORIGINAL POST,  the AMD GPU will NOT WORK ANY MORE.
The CCC allows me to select which GPU gets used for whatever program I want but the problem is that since the drivers haven't been updated by Dell in such a long time, none of the current programs/games know how to use this old system of switching graphics software any more and they take the Intel HD4000 as default whatever you do.
LE: And also, please keep in mind that I'm not expecting to be able to play at MAX Details and things like that. I have no high expectations for this system. But what I do expect is to at least be able to RUN the bloody thing.

When I connect my iPhone 4 to my Dell inspiron 15R the laptop recognises the phone as a personal hotspot but it does not trigger the box for me to input the code to allow tethering.  Why does this happen when my old iPhone 4 (which Apple have just replaced) did produce the box and tethering afterwards was automatic?
Thanks in advance, Colin from Leicester, England.

ME TOO.  NOW MY IPHONE 6 PLUS IS SAME LIKE YOU.
iphone is diabled- connect to iTunes because i forget passcode.
i cannot connect iTunes because it's always asking to enter passcode on iphone.
So, i cannot make restore my iphone 6+. And then, I cann't erase "device" in icloud.
My iphone is new. No icloud. didn't connect to itune backage.
That's why I try to connect iTunes but it need to enter passcode.
So, my iphone just keep "iphone is disbled-connect to iTunes".

  • Dell Inspiron 15R and Photoshop CS5?

Currently looking at buying a DELL inspiron 15R for my 16yr old daughter.  She is interested in graphic design and will be studing it next year so also getting Photoshop CS5.
    Specs I'm looking at are:
    Intel® Core™ i3-370M Processor (2.4Ghz, 4Threads, 3M cache)
15.6 Widescreen HD WLED Glossy Display with TrueLife™ (1366x768)
    4GB RAM
    500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
    Intel® HD Graphics
Does this laptop have the necessary 'grunt' for photoshop.  It exceeds system requirement for photoshop CS5. but specs are usually slower than reality.
SHould i update the chip to an i5?  Intel Core i5 460M (2.53GHz/3MB cache)
or alternatively should I change the video card to a dedicated card option ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 - 1GB?
    Thanks in Advance.

From my personal experience, I wouldn't go for an Integrated card. This is one of the most important components for Photoshop, so invest in a decent graphics card (ATI or NVidia). It doesn't have to be a really exepensive one - I have been using ATI Radeon with 256MB of RAM on my Dell Studio for almost two years and it still rocks! (even when I work with 3D in Ps CS5 Extended).
I would also invest in more RAM (this can be added easily - I bought extra 4GB as my Studio came with 3GB).
I wouldn't worry about the processor - I'm on Intel Core 2 Duo - and it works very very well, it's very quick which is very important as I'm training Photoshop.
    I hope this helps.

  • Dell Inspiron 15R wont turn on (continuous beeping)

Dell Inspiron 15R (5537) suddenly wouldn't want to start. When boot up, nothing seem to appear, blank screen, no logo, no text, nothing. there is a continuous beeping, it not 2 beep or 5 beep or any number of beep, it just beep continuously, never ending, until I turn off the laptop.
Did some searching around on the web, forum, and so far I attempted:
-Checked ram and hard-drive to see if it fully connect.
-Turn off computer, unplug battery and ac power, press the power button for 30 sec.
still haven't resolve the problem yet.
Next, I try to do a Pre-boot System Assessment, FN+Power. Took SEVERAL attempt to finally got it to run Pre-boot System Assessment. Hold FN + Power, hear beeping, turn it off, Hold FN + Power, hear beeping, turn it off.
Did that for about 20 times and finally got Pre-boot System Assessment instead of the beeping.

This is the result I got from it, Currently doing the remaining memory test. It taking a long time, ill have an update once that is done, it stuck on 98%.

This paper discusses troubleshooting steps for notebooks that are not turning on.  Typically it could be one of three issues,  No power (no power to the notebook), No post (the system has power but is not fully turning on), or No boot (the system has power, it is turning on, but it is not booting to the Operating system).
From your post it is obvious that the notebook has power,  but it isn't fully turning on.  I would have to say that this is a No post problem. This paper will go over further troubleshooting steps to help determine the problem.
If the notebook is not starting up or showing a blank screen:
Remove any peripheral devices that are attached to the computer.
    Peripherals include:
    Printers
    Scanners
    Media Card Readers
Mobile devices such as smart phones or tablets or portable digital assistants or MP3 players
    Digital cameras or video recorders
    USB storage devices
Remove the computer from a docking station if it is in one
Remove any CDs or DVDs in the optical drive
Remove the AC adapter from the computer and remove the AC power cord from the wall outlet.
Remove the computer's battery. For instructions on how to do this, consult the Online Owner's Manual.
Press and hold the computer power button for 15 seconds.
Insert the AC adapter plug and make sure it is seated properly.
Plug in the AC power cord to a known good working outlet.
Press the power button to see if the computer turns on.
If the computer starts, turn it off and put the battery back in.
Press the power button to see if the computer turns on.
If the computer starts, turn it off and continue replacing peripheral components until you determine
which one is causing the failure.
Please let me know if this helps out.
    TB
I did what you told me, there is power coming it, it just wont start, like i can hear the fan running, the power led is lid up, it just wont boot into anything, screen is blank and there is a continuous beeping sound, beep ... beep ... beep .. beep..  beep ... beep ... beep .. beep..  beep ... beep ... beep .. beep..  beep ... beep ... beep .. beep..  beep ... beep ... beep .. beep..  beep ... beep ... beep .. beep.. it goes on and on.
if i keep turning it on and off, if im lucky, very rarely, it boot into the OS or into Pre-boot System Assessment. Once it boot into the window OS, i attempt to do a factory reset, but as soon as it restart it fail to continue and just beep.
    any other suggestions?

Are you sure it's a 30" display?  The 30" has a DVI plug.  They never made a dual-link ADC.
If it is a smaller display with ADC

  • Just bought a new DELL Inspiron 15R laptop, can't get Arch iso to boot

Just bought a brand new laptop and I've been really wanting to try Archlinux (coming from Fedora)
I hit F2 to go into my boot settings and I enabled "legacy" mode. I then changed the boot order to CD/DVD first, I saved the settings and rebooted the machine with the Archlinux ISO in the drive.  (this is the 10.1.2013) version of the ISO.
When the machine reboots I can see the little CD/DVD drive LED light up for a second or 2 but it's like it's not seeing the CD as a bootable CD.  I tried searching all over but I'm still stuck, desperate for help here.  Just to make sure it wasn't something wrong with the CD I tried the same CD in another machine and right away it came up with the Archlinux menu screen.
I have since installed Kali/Debian on this new machine with no problems (the new DELL) - I still want to do a dual boot with both Kali/Debian and Archlinux.  Any ideas on what I can try?

You can use the bootstrap tar.gz files that are found in the same directory as the iso on every mirror.  If you go to the download page, select the mirror of your choice, you will see a file called "archlinux-bootstrap-2013.10.01-x86_64.tar.gz" (one for i686 also).  That is what you need.
Unpack it whereever you think is appropriate, if you have enough RAM you can use /tmp.  Then after setting up the partitions in the host (Kali/Debian, or whatever), you can arch-chroot to that unpacked directory.  There you will find all the tools necessary to install (pacman and the arch-install-scripts).
This method has one issue though, and that is that the arch-chroot script (and maybe others) requires some pretty new versions of various things.  In particular, I think that a pretty new version of bash is required.  So I am not sure about the viability of this solution on anything debian, as their stable repos tend to be pretty conservative.  It also means that you need to have a pretty good understanding of the install process, as you will still mostly follow the beginners guide, but it will require a few changes in the procedure.
    Good luck.

  • Compatibility between Inspiron 15R N5010 (5010-7015) and WD black^2 (WD1001X06XDTL) dual drive 2.5''

    Hello,
    I own a Dell Inspiron 15R N5010 (5010-7015) / i5 / 4GB RAM / 320GB HDD and I am interested in upgrading the internal hard drive to the dual drive series from WD (black^2 - WD1001X06XDTL).
The system supports SATA2 and a variety of capacities between 160GB and 640GB for 5400rpm and only for 320GB and 500GB on 7200rpm according to the manual.
Is there any possibility that I could upgrade to a WD Black2, or I will face compatibility issues?
Does the specific model (N5010) support that technology? The only list I was able to find was this one: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11024/~/wd-black%C2%B2-dual-drive-computer-compatibility-list
If not, are there any other alternatives for a hard drive upgrade [i.e. Seagate 1TB Laptop SSHD (STBD1000400)] that would have full compatibility?
As you can see I am looking for anything as close to an SSD but not an SSD.

The Black2 functions as any standard SSD and hard drive -- as long as the OS you're running supports it (it's software-controlled), you're set.  It'll work with Windows 7 or Windows 8, no problem. It won't (unless something has recently changed) work with Linux, though.

  • Switchable graphic card problem dell inspiron 5521 15r hd7670m

    I have a dell inspiron 5521 15r with 1gb hd7670m dedicated
i installed the drivers they work fine but games give low fps as the seem to be running on intel hd 4000.
plz help i think gpu is not giving any performance .

    Hi umairrafiq13,
Just to make sure, have you assigned AMD Graphics to the games you play? If not, follow the steps below to enable switchable graphics:
Right click an empty area on the desktop.
Select “ATI Catalyst Control Center” from the context menu that appears.
Click Power and select Switchable Graphics
Choose an application (in your case the games) from the list or browse and select an application and assign the appropriate GPU.
If Switchable graphics is configured properly, please install GPU-Z and check under “Sensors” tab in the application while running the game in the background. It will show you the GPU being used as AMD Graphics.
Note: This 3rd party application is exclusively my suggestion based on the personal research and experience. Usage of this application is purely based on your discretion.
By the way, which is the benchmarking application you are using to check the FPS for the games and what are the games you are benchmarking?

  • Alps Touchpad detected as PS2 Generic mouse on Dell Inspiron N5110 15R

I Started this thread 2 months ago , at first I was asking for a solution and I didn't get one , So I repeated that thread on different distros forums but I get the same results because of a simple fact that there is no one have solution !! , So I realized that the best way to solve this problem is to gather our forces here so we can create a solution
The Bug :  xinput-list shows PS/2  Generic mouse instead of  Alps touchpad  so multi-touch gestures is not possible ( Probably an unknown alps protocol )
The Effected Laptops : Dell Inspiron N5110 ,  Acer Aspire V3-771G-9875  , ......... (You name it)
Update 1- installing kernel 3.5.2 from test repos didn't solve the problem
Update 2- installing  psmouse-elantech from AUR (as wiki says )  didn't solve the problem it only made xinput-list identifies it as ps/2 elantech mouse
Update 3- installing psmouse-alps from AUR don't have any impact
Update 4- installing extra/xf86-input-evdev and extra/xf86-input-synaptics  don't have any impact
Update 5- Here are bug reports links :

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/977063
    https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45201
Update 6- I contacted Dell ,They says it's Alps responsibility and i contacted alps , They says it's Dell responsibility  ( I hate those shitty formal replies )
Update 7- After Some Google-ing  I found that a developer managed to brake the unknown alps protocol on dell latitude E6230 which is very similar to our alps protocol , so If any developer owns n5110 please take a look at this  http://markmail.org/message/r62dimyqb6f … te:results  you might find a clue or a trace to brake that protocol
In the end please keep this thread alive as possible with every new finding , Suggestion ,workaround , possible solution until we solve this F***N bug

  • [SOLVED] Function Keys Problem On Dell Inspiron N5010

Yesterday I bought a new laptop (Dell Inspiron N5010) and immediately installed Arch Linux on it. But when I launched the installation framework, I needed to use fdisk to partition my drive manually and to open another tty, ctrl + alt + f2 or up to f7, none of them worked. When I use f4 or f5 for example, it changes the brightness of the screen cause these keys have icons on them which represent the brightness control. So I quitted, took care of that fdisk issue and got back, installed Arch Linux successfully. When launched in GNOME 3, nothing was changed. It still uses f1, f2, ... and so on as "just function keys" without using "Fn" key. It's fine somehow cause my system automatically detected those keys, I can use every single function of my keyboard. But without using Fn key, I can't actually use any fx key for my own use. For example, I can't use Tilda anymore cause when I use only f1, it tries to open monitor control stuff.
    So... any ideas?
Edit: It seems that this problem is all about Arch Linux. A friend of mine has the same laptop and he has just tried Mint Debian RC and function keys worked properly. So, there's a problem and it seems it's related to Arch Linux (or maybe Xorg version, somehow?).

Now since i switched it off in the bios All I have to do is hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to the terminal. But in order to turn off wifi from the F key (for example) I have to hit Fn+F2. It's switched.
I can't tell you how this was helpful. I've never noticed that there was an option in BIOS's Advanced menu for this. I updated it as "Function Key" and it solved my problem, thanks.

  • StarTech Adapter not working with Dell Inspiron 15, model 3521

Side Note: I wrote a reply to a thread that was from 2013. I do apologize because the link was sent to me by my bf and I did not realize how old it was. Since my reply has to be approved I can't delete it.
Current Issue: StarTech Adapter not working with Dell Inspiron 15 model 3521
I bought my Dell laptop last year and at first I did not realize that it had only one audio jack (combo, as the specifications manual says), I only noticed when I was trying to plug in my Ozone Rage ST headset.
I searched online threads and found out that I needed an adapter and most people mentioned Headset Buddy. I couldn't find any adapters for sale in my country (or employees didn't really know what I was talking about) and since Headset Buddy is a bit expensive, I decided to try StarTech Headset adapter for headsets with separate headphone/microphone plugs - 3.5mm 4 position to 2x 3 position 3.5mm M/F www.amazon.com/.../ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top.
It arrived today and let me tell you that I can't make it work. I can hear everything but I can't get the external mic to work or even be detected. I have always used my headset (mostly for gaming) and I prefer to use my external mic rather than the internal one. First I connected my headphone and mic jacks to the adapter and only after that did I connect it to the laptop combo jack. I also tried vice-versa. It didn't work, regardless of the order. I even tried with a different headset and it still didn't work. What else can I do?
I have also found a thread on Dell forums saying that Headset Buddy doesn't even work on Dell Inspiron 15, model 3521. So since it doesn't work and I'm assuming StarTech doesn't, either, what am I to do/buy?! I am getting extremely frustrated and I'm very disappointed with Dell because the brand should have included with the laptop a proper working adapter for these situations and not make its customers buy an extra accessory to make whatever working gear they already had function. It just doesn't make sense to me! Either make the changes work properly or simply don't touch anything. I spent some of my savings on this laptop which, overall, is great but now I am being forced to spend more on an item to allow me to use my headset. I am running out of options here and even Dell can't seem to tell its customers with 100% certainty what really works for this specific model.
If I can't make the adapter work, I just hope I can return it, otherwise I'll end up with no refund and with a piece of equipment I have no other use for!
    Any thoughts?

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
This is the first time I was forced to buy adapters such as these so I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if there's anything else I can do to make it work. When I plug the adapter to my Dell, the laptop presents me with several options such as: headphones, headphone, speakers, skull candy headphones, etc (maybe some may have different names but since I see them in Portuguese, I'm not quite sure how they appear for someone who has the computer in English), I have picked different options and it still doesn't work, the only noticeable changes are sound quality related, I guess.
