Dell Latitude E6510 Black screen before posting during cold boot

When I cold boot my laptop,I get about 10sec of black screen before the laptop posts..1st gen. i5 core,4gb DDR3 80GB Intel X25-M Nvidia NVS 3100 graphics with 512MB RAM.

I received a new XPS13 9343 last week and unpacked it yesterday (Friday 4/24/2015). When I first opened the lid and powered it up there was no display. It was completely black, not blank. I went to close the lid and when slightly jarring it I noticed that the initial screen appeared but briefly.
After analyzing the symptom I decided:
It is a physical issue - not firmware related
While I apply very slight pressure compressing the lower right corner of the display it will function
It is the LCD backlight that is intermittent as the image is perfect otherwise and turns on an off with pressure not quite instantaneously
Once the laptop warms (2 minutes) the display becomes completely reliable and unaffected by lid motion
My bet is that this is a problem with the conductive rubber mounting strip used to make the many connections to the LCD panel. Envision a very thin foam double sided tape with the characteristic that current can only flow front to back through the thin dimension of the tape. Adjacent pads (connection points) are not shorted by the tape and pads (carefully) aligned on the other side of the tape are connected. Its very ingenious actually.
In my case probably the circuit for the LCD backlight is at the end of a strip on the bottom right. It didn't properly bond during production. Probably once current flows through it (when I compress the display or hold the lid in just the right position) the adhesive warms and grabs hold. It probably doesn't take much to pass the low currents involved. I wonder if after some use or exposure to warmer operating conditions if it might not finally bond permanently and the issue go away?
Anyway this is what happens when you present an engineer with a problem, it gets over analyzed. You would like to think that within hours of posting this a bunch of production engineers will run over to all of the fixtures in their facilities that are used to assemble the displays and make sure there isn't one out of adjustment. Uneven clamping force or some such science.
The problem now for me is in finding out if I need to replace it and how much of a pain that is going to be. Unfortunately now I don't want to migrate from my prior laptop if I am going to have to send this one off someplace.
In some way this represents a security feature. Haha. I mean there is a trick to getting the thing to come up that I would only know. Another level of security at no extra charge. Still, one wishes to not have a quality concern floating in the back of your mind.
But, this might be your issue too. Anyone else have this experience?

  • Wrong sampling rate from Sound Input Read VI on Dell Latitude E6510

    Hi,
    When I
receive data from the sound card with the Sound Input Read VI, the actual
sampling rate is not equal to the sampling rate set in the Sound Input
Configure VI. I estimate the sampling ratio by dividing the number of samples received
by the difference between the first and the last t0 from Sound Input Read. For
example, if the sampling rate is set to 7000 S/s, the actual sampling rate is
around 6900 S/s. If the sampling rate is set to 7050 S/s, the actual sampling
    rate is around 7200.
    This problem appears when the
code is run on my Dell Latitude E6510 machine. When I run the
same code on my Lenovo ThinkPad, the sampling rate is correct.
    The Labview application I
am developing is to be used to acquire data synchronously from several sources,
including the sound card input. It is therefore important that the sampling rate
    is correct.
    If anybody has any idea
about what may cause this problem, and a way to fix it, I would be grateful.
    Ole

It has been a trend the last years that sound card only support some sampling rates, not a range. You should refer to your sound card manual for this kind of information.  You should also be aware of that the NI sound interface is junk, and they do care about it either. Use the WaveIO interface instead See the link. But I am quite sure your problem is related to the sound card hardware not some NI driver issue

Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted

  • Sat A665 - S6092 black screen before windows startup

I got a problem, it is strange. Sometimes windows starts and sometimes it doesnt. I normally press the power button, then it appear toshiba logo, then it appears a little line blinking at the top of the black screen and then it goes completely black, nothing happens. If I press ctrl + alt + del it reboots, but it I press the power button it turns off roughly. Sometimes I reboot 2 times and windows starts, sometimes 10 times and it starts, and sometimes it starts normally. What can I do? Thank you

I have the same problem with my Sat665d for about 1mth. Finally it got worse and worse. Problem is that your hard drive is failing and that you should back up your files asap while you still can. Toshiba is replacing my hard drive. I'm packing my laptop in the box they sent me. It's all prepaid shipping etc. Fed ex is picking it up in the morning. My laptop was under the 1yr manufactures warranty. So i hope yours is under warranty, otherwise you have to pay for new hard drive. They are relatively cheap about $60.00 -$100.00 depending how big it is. I hope this helps you before it's to late.

  • Dell Latitude E6410 Blank Screen

I have Arch installed on an external USB drive. It works fine on two different laptops using ATI cards and using the generic ati driver. Now I'm trying it on a Dell Latitude E6410 which has an nVidia card (NVS 3100M). At first I had both the generic ati and the vesa drivers installed. With just these two, X started, but it was simply a bunch of colored pixels randomly assorted. Using the generic xf86-video-nv yielded an error and X wouldn't start. Using nouveau I got a little closer, except rather than not starting or displaying strange color assortments, the screen simply seemed to either go black or turn off. I've looked around and apparently nouveau does work with this graphics card, but I'm not sure why it isn't right now.

nickramos wrote:Ok, I did get it to work on the laptop using nouveau, but only by adding configuration options to xorg.
But now, because of this, my ATI computers won't load X. Is there any way to make it so that the correct driver is loaded depending on the machine being used?
That's the hard part. That's what I was talking about.
Of course you can manually switch the configs  and reboot.
You need to hack initscripts or sth like that
    if $hostname = ati do

  • Firefox opens to a black screen / Previous post is not helping

    Product Detected
    Intel® HD Graphics 3000
I have thoroughly (I think) read the other posts / questions regarding this issue. Like others, I'm experience a completely black screen when opening the new version of Firefox. I can't do (or click on) anything...and it won't open in safe mode.
I'm not very tech-savvy...but I did manage to get to the point where I had Intel do an auto-check to see about updating the graphics card (which was the other recommended fix).
I have a four-year-old Lenovo ThinkPad, BTW. I got the following message:
    Current Driver Installed
    8.15.10.2321
A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer.
Is there anything else I can do before I contact Lenovo (never fun). I guess not using Firefox is the obvious answer here...but it is my favorite browser. Urgh. Thanks in advance for any advice.

hello, what is the exact product name/number of your thinkpad?

  • Black screen before Windows installation

I have already installed Windows 7 before and I had no problems with the installation. The reason why I decided to reinstall Windows is when I was trying to start BootCamp I only got black screen. This started to happen after  I did hard reboot. I did this because Windows freezed.
I deleted Windows on my MacBook and then I tried to install Windows again. After BootCamp Assistant splited hard drive (1st part for Mac OS X,  2nd part for Windows) OS X shutted down and after that I heard Mac sound (sound when You start Mac). And then I can only see black screen ( also there was a console cursor for a second ).
Why black screen started to happen?
    and
    How can I avoid it?

  • Black screen before going to sleep

With the "dim screen..." option box UNCHECKED, instead of dimming the screen before putting the display to sleep, the screen turns black. The same kinda black as if you dim your backlight to 0.
So I can still see some windows etc... but the backlight is just not working.
This is very annoying cause it turns my screen to black after one minute when I am on the battery and it makes it impossible to read a text.
I believe this is a bug... what do you think, o you have the same problem?
PS: Of course my sleep setting is set to a much longer time (15 minutes) so it is not related to that.

  • Black screen before startup

Hey I've got a hp pavilion dv6 that has just gone down on me. The display just went black and now when I turn it on it just stays black screen, no light at all the screen. I've tried unplugging the battery and AC and holding down the power button for 30-60 seconds. Been trying for 30 minutes now, also tried reseating the memory in the laptop. The caps lock light is on BUT NOT FLASHING. The F12 light is on aswell as the light closest to the cd drive, the 2 lights in either side of the AC plugin is not on. But the AC is working though cause I can tun it on while battery is out and AC is in
Any ideas what the problem might be?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi @ Nicklas4600,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums,  Now just to help me out a bit here with your issue.
When you press the power button you get no response except the LED on for the F12 button and on either side of the power connection as well as the optical drive LED.  These LED's stay on constant or do any of them flash in any way.  As well could you post back with a little more information for me.
    1) Is there any fan sound when you press the power button.
    2) When the optical drive LED comes on is there any noise coming from the drive.
    3) What are the colour of the LED's.
Other information that I will need is your complete model and product number.  Here is a link that will show you where to find this information.

  • Z77 mpower replaced, black screen after post.

Ok so I've loved my setup for a year solid, until the other day when my Z77 Mpower started smoking from under one of the heatspreaders. I'm all set for an RMA, but in the meantime I had to buy another Mpower board. This is my work PC, and I cannot wait the 2+ weeks for a replacement. So I bought another mobo of the same model and just got done swapping everything out. Now I get post fine, but when loading windows I just get a black screen.
    I've:
    Updated bios to latest
Taken out all but one stick of RAM
Tried both on-board and discreet GPU
Tried safe mode (stops at "please wait" and doesn't go any further)
    Tried startup repair (black screen)
Tried reinstalling windows (freezes after "Windows is loading files..." at the "Starting Windows" screen.
My drives and such all show up fine in bios. No errors on the board. I don't hear the windows chime when trying to boot windows normally.
    4 or 8gb ddr3, MSI 670GTX, mushkin 240gb SSD(boot), 640gb WD HD(data)
Please help, as this PC is my Iivelyhood and sanity.

Update: after clean memtest and trying everything under the sun including a new PSU, I've finally made a discovery. I can finally boot to OS if I enable only 1 core of the procesor. This is under CPU features of the overclock menu.
Now I'll reseat the CPU, check for bent pins, etc. If this changes nothing, do I assume that my CPU is damaged or there's something wrong with the new board? I guess the only way to know for sure is to have another CPU or board, of which I have neither at this time.

  • Black screen - No Post FX790-GD70

I was adding a 2nd hard disk and accidentally "plugged" the sata cable into the ide port (i know it sounds ridiculous) and the box froze up... so i unplugged everything, rebooted and it got stuck after it initialized the USB it sits at this screen - i  then cleared the CMOS and unplugged everything except the video card and now it just posts to a black screen...... arrrrrrg! what can i do? This is a total noob move and I was in a rush and I'm kicking myself for potentially shorting out my board which was running like a champ earlier today...... what can I do? I left it unplugged for about 30 min and tried again and it just sits there with nothing on the screen......

Better update to the latest version but board will in any case be updateable with the new cpu installed (unlike on Intel boards where unsupported cpus usually cause no posting).

  • Black screen no post p7n sli-fi tried almost everything

i just got my new motherboard. And i know the heatpipe will get very hot due the 750i chipset.
First i tried to start the motherboard and it worked (out of the case).
Then i wanted to put better cooling paste on the northbridge/southbridge and pcie expander.
So i removed the entire heatpipe, this was very easy and did not require a lot of force.
I found that only less than half the chip (pcie expander chip) was covered with thermal paste (fabric).
i removed all the fabric thermalgrease and put my own zalman thermal grease on it.
Pushed back in the pushpins on the board and i was done.
After that i connected all the cables (8 pins, 20 pins, vga power,) and the hardware (processor, memory and graphic card)
When i wanted to boot the thing it didn't, only fans, leds and a black screen.
    I tried everything:
    - tried the motherboard out of the case (never went in there though)
    - tried cmos reset with power cable remove and without battery
    - tried other memory
    - tried other psu
    - tried other graphics card
    - tried swapping memory in different slots
    - tried swapping graphic card in diffrent slots
    - checked if there are failures (scratches on the board, dust, thermal paste or for bent pinns)
    - reseated cables and the cpu
    - also tried speaker thingy but i get no sounds at all
But the only thing i get is a black screen and nothing,
If anyone have a idea how i can boot this board... i will merry him/her for sure xD
    specs:
    e6400 @2.13 ghz
    2x1g GEIL ultra DDR2-800mhz 1.9-2.1v
    coolermaster realpower m630w
    hkc 580w (test)
    1x1g kingston memory ddr2-667mhz (test)
    2x Asus 9600gt 512mb

Since its worked before your intervention{Replacing the heatpipe}, seems you have damaged something or you are missing something small like power cable or have some shorting issue.

  • Black Screen before installing windows 7. Lets solve once and for all.

I have a late 2008 macbook pro and have been trying to install windows 7 through boot camp for a number of days now. I have read every forum on the internet and have tried every popular solution (i.e. resetting pram, smc, unplugging, changing screen resolution, etc.) and nothing has worked. I know there are many other people with this problem but none of them have solutions. I had windows 7 installed a few months ago but it stopped working and I had to delete it. Just yesterday I reinstalled Snow Leopard and still nothing. I created the partition and tried to install windows but it just goes to the blinking cursor for one second, then a black screen. I have tried everything possible and nothing works.
Please lets try to get this problem solved because out of every single forum on the internet, none of them have solved this problem.

I think after weeks of searching I have finally narrowed it down, based on what I have read, to a disk drive problem. It seems to be something wrong with the EFI or the entire disk drive in general. I am taking it to the apple store tomorrow and I highly doubt they will do anything.

  • HT4407 Help: Encountered black screen before Windows 7 was installed. .

How can I fix it and complete Windows 7 installation? Thanks for your kind advice in advance.

  • IPod 4G black screen, unresponsive, stuck during restore

Hi there, I would like to know if anyone has had this problem and if it has been resolved. I've encountered myself to be stuck in this loop of "waiting for ipod" when trying to restore the ipod to ios 6.1.3. It was previously on ios 6.1.2. This is my GF's ipod and she had told me she was using it just fine, but once putting it into her bag, and checking it again the screen had gone entirely black. She'd charge it assuming it was dead but it had gone into a recovery/DFU mode loop. Everytime I plug it into my computer I receive a message that it is in recovery mode and must be restored. I remind you again that no combination of buttons will cure the screen at this point. Holding home + power button for a few seconds for a soft reset just shows the same message when plugged in. Anyway, as I try to update, the screen turns on showing the apple logo and loading bar, but then once the step gets to "waiting for ipod" nothing works. I've tried letting it sit there for over 2 hours, but nothing. I have yet to find a solution, and it's become quite frustrating. Please let me know if you have any idea how to fix this. I've tried messing around using different methods such as iRec, TinyUmbrella, Redsn0w recovery, messing with hosts files, firewall, etc.

I think you are experiencing a fake DFU mode you are always on black screen and iTunes prompt recovery mode.
I think links below can help on how to put it to proper DFU mode, avoid error 1600 and 1601 when restoring, and proper update or restore.
