Dell Locks up?

My machine has constant Display driver errors after the machine runs for a while my display starts to flicker and some times it just locks up the whole machine and I can't do anything but unplug the machine to reset the problem? I can't do a ctrl-Alt Del or anything to get my system back? I ran diags and everything checks out okay. What do I need to do to get this corrected?

Windows 8.1 Lock Screen drops network connectivity when screen locked using Win+L

I was sent here from Microsoft Community forum. The question is:
Since Windows NT 4.0 I'm using Lock Screen to prevent people from accessing my computer when I'm leaving my room. First I was using CTRL+ALT+DEL / Lock Screen, then switched to Win+L keyboard shortcut when it was first introduced.
Everything was fine until I switched to Windows 8.1 computer (Sony Vaio Duo 13 with Broadcom wireless network controller). This machine is 8.1, not 8.0 upgraded to 8.1.
My problem is that when I hit Win+L combo the Lock Screen (with clock etc.) is displayed. Then, despite I have configured not to turn off display, the screen goes blank (after 30 seconds since lock) and network connectivity is cut off from desktop
apps (I suspect the system goes into Active Standby mode, because Modern UI apps like Tune-In radio keep working fine).
100% repeatable scenarios:
## Scenario 1 ##
1) Log in
2) Open desktop app that uses network connectivity. Outlook 2013 from Office365 subscription
3) Check that it has connected
4) Lock screen (Win+L)
5) Wait for 30 seconds (first incorrectly posted as few minutes) as screen goes black
6) Unlock screen (using password)
7) In right corner of Outlook app you will see "Unable to connect with Exchange server" and few seconds later it will reconnect sucessfuly
## Scenario 2 - the more annoying ##
1) Log in to Win 8.1 computer
2) Connect to it using SMB (in my case I wanted to transfer 30 GB of files from local hard drive C: to server) \\COMPUTER-NAME\c$ from Windows Server 2012 R2
3) Start copying files from computer to server
4) Lock the screen on computer
5) As soon as screen goes black server displays message "Lost connection to the resource. Try again?"
6) Unlock screen on the computer
7) Click "Try again" and it will continue copying files
My power settings are set to go into stand by after 5 hours and if I not lock the screen it doesn't go to sleep before 5 hours.
When I lock the screen using Win+L it goes into (probably Active) Standby mode.
Is there any way to prevent it from going to Active Standby when locking screen? I need the screen lock for security reasons but I don't want it to drop my network connectivity on remote desktops, file transfers and other desktop activities before 5 hour
timeout.
This issue is not related to more or less known wireless network connectivity problem that happens to many Intel Haswell computers. Mine doesn't exhibit those problems. I can easly push 100 - 200 GB of wireless data without network drops.

Same issue here using Surface 3 Pro with either internal WLAN or MS USB LAN Adapter. I'm frequently used to keep open connections over SSH to some servers. On switching to lock screen explicitly by pressing Win+L or implicitly due to idle timeout all
connections to servers are lost. In addition, I don't get any notifications on incoming Skype messages (using Skype for desktop) when lock screen is active.
Neither NIC is showing "Power Management Tab" according to step 5 of instructions above.
Additionally observing USB LAN NIC seems to be kept active after activating lock screen, but traffic stops (according to its flashing light) when lock screen is switching off display. Blanking display doesn't seem to be adjustable in System Settings (Energy
Options accessed through Win+X).
Find attached log file of powercfg -energy -duration 300 ...
Log file is in German. It basically claims unset timeouts for deactivating display while running attached to power supply though lock screen is turning off displays within 1-2 minutes.

ITunes 7.0.1.8 locks up Windows XP

I have a fairly new computer (9 months), an HP laptop, and an even newer iPod 60GB.
After installing iTunes 7.0, I got the fairly common problem of the computer locking up at odd times. I had no problems with iTunes 6.x.
Now, I have the most current iTunes and iPod software, and the computer still locks up. I can go for days without ever starting iTunes, and the system is fine - never locks up. If I run iTunes, I am guaranteed a lockup on the computer.
It seems to happen most often after I lock the computer (Ctl-Alt-Del/Lock Computer) for security reasons, e.g. I'm away from my machine. But not always. The only common thread is whether or not I run iTunes.
I thought this problem was alleged to have been fixed in this most recent version. What gives? Come on Apple, your software is supposed to be better than this.

Well Im finding out this can happen if you use the shuffle feature in itunes, if you do turn it off and see if that fixes it.
Now some people Im finding get confused when I say to update there suond card or video card so maybe I should be more clear about that here as well....
If the sound/video card came with the PC when you bought it (In other words you have not installed one of these cards) the update for them will be at the PC makers site.
If you have installed a sound/video card AFTER buying the PC, you need to goto the maker of the card and look for the updates there instead of the PC makers site. If you installed a creative sound card goto www.creative.com, if you installed an ATI Video card you need to goto ATI.com to find the update for your video card

Lock computer causes itunes stopped working error

I can repeatedly crash itunes by locking my computer either with a screen saver requiring a password or via ctrl-alt-del "lock my computer". I have tried disabling other applications via MSconfig as suggested on some forums (no changes), verified that Qtime does work properly, and even tried solutions for other symptoms that are reported to cause the same error (e.g. deactivate store/reactivate, etc). I do not have any of the codecs that cause problems with itunes.
The error message is always "itunes stopped working...checking for a solution".
I am running Vista Home Premium SP1 (32bit) on a Dell E1405. Any ideas?

You're right - I just validated that -- the problem only occurs when itunes is the top application. Too bad about no response as I use a password protected screen saver on my laptop (for security) and I have the tendency to have itunes on top. I guess I'll have to break this habit until when/if someone solves the bug or creates a workaround.
I'm trying to figure out the mechanism of the failure. Event Viewer tells me its a D3D9.DLL that is failing:

Soundblaster Locking Up Computer

Hello everyone.
I have a Soundblaster X-FI Extreme Gamer that transferred from my old machine to my new one that I just built. I've got a 790FX AMD chipset on my mainboard. I'm experiencing a couple of issues, one more serious and irritating than the other. The first problem is that it seems like at random times (and sometimes not so random) that my computer will lock up solid, like no CTRL-ALT-DEL lock up. You can't even turn off NumLock on the keyboard, you have to hit the reset button to get it back up. The majority of the time that this happens its because I'm inside the Creative Console messing with one of the settings including switching from Entertainment to Gaming, changing the number of speakers, enabling or disabling Crystalizer EAX or 3D sound. If i change on one of those things sometimes it will work other times it will just freeze right as you click. In addition i've been able to get this freeze to occur in some games if I turn on EAX effects. The other problem I seem to be having is when I listen to music it almost sounds like its skipping and dropping portions out of the song, its hard to describe its not like listening to a CD skipping i've never heard anyting like it before. I'm running the absolute latest drivers available for my system. One caveat I see is that I'm running the RC of Windows 7 64-bit, however, I ran this same card on the RC on my old computer and didn't have a single problem. Sound card has its own IRQ so no resource issue there.
Any suggestions?

Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

Persistant pending dead sessions

Hello ~
I frequently have dead sessions having hooks (in fact UPD/DEL locks) on tables. These sessions have been established by JDBC connections. When the application server (Tomcat) breaks down, the Oracle sessions still persist, with their locks, and I just have to force an ALTER SYSTEM KILL SESSION to eliminate them.

you can enable Dead Connection Detection
In your sqlnet.ora file you can put
SQLNET.EXPIRE_TIME=10
every 10 min the server will probe to see if connections are still valid.

TouchPad lock key does not work anymore on Dell XPS L401X

Hi everyone,
On my Dell XPS L401X laptop, there is a key to lock/unlock the touchpad. It used to work fine on Windows and on new fresh install ArchLinux, but now it does not work anymore. If I remember correctly, I did not change, configure any shortcut so far.
Any hint to fix this problem?

I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.

Itunes locks up on a dell running windows XP

I have a Dell XPS410 and everytime I try and drag in a mp3 file itunes locks up and basically freezes my computer. If I put in a cd the tracks come up and also plays. I have re_installed itunes 3 times.
up to a week ago though it took a while for the files to load into itunes it worked. I have not loaded any new software since.
any help would be welcome

Instead of dragging the mp3 into iTunes, have you tried adding the file?
In iTunes top line: File>Add file to library
Then browse to the mp3 location on your computer and push add. Does this work better?

I have a dell inspirion. My kids locked out my wifes iPad. The dell doesnt have iTunes on it. Been trying to download it. On the site it says its downloaded, but per the laptop, its nowhere to be found. WTH is up with this??

Dell Inspirion laptop with windows 7 on it, says on the Itunes site that Itunes is downloaded. Yet, there never was a pop up on the laptop saying or showing its downloading. Needing it to unlock a locked iPad thanks to my iTunes folder. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I am aware you can unlock the iPad by restoring a previous backup, but if this isn't the machine the device previously synced with you may have problems there. If there is any data that isn't stored elsewhere then it will be lost if you simply wipe the device.

Kid locked restrections then i try 10 passwords to try to erase it then now its in ipad is disable mode wont do nothing and i del. from itunes to need it restored back to itunes

Hard reboot with binking caps lock and num lock lights DELL XPS M1530

After returning from work I saw my DELL XPS M1530 had hung and there was blinking CAPS and NUM lock indicators, I had to hard reboot.
This has happened with me some times.
How can I investigate? Is there some log which i can see after hard reboot?
I am on kdemod 4.1.3 with nvidia stable driver

I used to have that problem on my laptop also. It seems to plague a good number of XPS 1530 owners. From what I can tell the problem seems to be either graphics card drivers or wireless card drivers. Do you happen to have the intel 4965agn card? If not, what hardware do you use for wireless and graphics?

This only happens when I leave a window with Firefox 5.0 open. No other software package causes this problem.

How do i disable edge gestures in windows 8.1 on a dell tablet ? i need to lock down my full screen app.
