Dell notebook with d-link DWL-650+ card can't connect to Airport

I bought a new iMac G5 (with the intel duo) and an Airport Extreme. Sweet. No problems with either one. My son has a dell notebook (running Windows ME) with a D-Link DWL-650+ wireless card in it. (its a b card). I can see my airport network from this dell, but when I try to connect, it does nothing. The airport is configured for both b and g and this same Dell can connect to my neighbors wireless network just fine. My neighbor has a d-link b/g wireless router. Just wondering what the heck the problem could be. My neighbors laptop with built-in g can connect to my Airport fine. Is it because its an old b card or somthing? Any ideas?
Thanks! Shako

Did you open Airport and see if you see the wireless router? If you can see it, you can select it and then make sure it is set up properly in networks in the system prefs.

  • D-Link DWL-650+ and ndiswrapper

    Hello everyone
So after days and days of researching and fiddling around and still no wireless, I figured it's about time I should simply ask and see if I can get it to work.
Let me start with short summary of my dilenma:
The computer I have is a Dell Inspiron 8200 with P4M 2.2Mhz CPU, 756MB RAM, nVidia GeForce4 440 Go with 64MB RAM, 40G HD laptop, dual-booting with WinXP (wireless works on XP, and I need this connection for studies and research. Windows resides on my HD only because of that). I use a D-Link DWL-650+ AirPlus card (yes, not so Linux friendly card, I know ), works perfectly fine on Windows, and ndiswrapper installs the driver and hardware is detected on Arch. Installation, modprobe have been already done, and iwconfig tells me

Looks okay. So I kill the eth0 connection, and try to ping, I get:
    [root@Brahms ndiswrapper-0.10]# ping www.apple.com
    ping: unknown host www.apple.com
Okay...So I suppose even though the card picks up the signal, it's not connected, right? /etc/rc.d/network start (or restart for that matter) comes up "fail". I am lost at this point. Probably some configuration error somewhere but I don't know much about networking and I've been trying different things, check the web for clue, but so far nothing worked. While trying to connect through wireless, no firewall was used.
If someone could point me to the right direction, I would really appreciate it. Not all things iwconfig and ifconfig make sense to me really. At one point, I got so discouraged, I was contemplating on installing Mandrake again (I'm still a newbie though. I used Mandrake 10 Official for a couple of weeks back in June, and then moved to Arch, getting my hands dirty. It has been a wonderful experience for me so far )
Before it gets too long, I would like to thank you in advance

I'm very sorry for the late reply! First of all, thank you so much for the pointers.
Just today, I finally got it to work. I have been busy and I was actually away from computer for a couple of weeks, finally got around to get some going. I've copied and pasted the default gw, inet addr and so on from my Windows wireless configuration program, and talaan! It worked

How can I get the system to recognize the phone, and let me rename it as my iPod, instead of my phone?
As an aside, the current installed operating system on this old iPhone is 4.2.1, but that wasn't one of the selectable options in the operating system list dropdown below. Don't know if that makes any difference.

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
In AirPort Utility how is your AirPort Extreme configured in the AirPort panel, Wireless tab, Radio Mode list? If it's set to 802.11n only the AirPort card in your G5 probably doesn't support that.

  • Can't connect to Airport over ethernet with XP Home SP3

I can't connect to Airport Base station dual ethernet over ethernet with XP Home SP3. The XP lan connection said Windows could not complete : Renewing your IP address, when i try to repair the connection. the apple Extreme Admin utility shows Base Station Information but can't configure it and said:
The Base station has been reset and is not configured, make sure your computer is configured for a 192.42.249.X-compatible IP address so the base station can be reset to its default configuration. Can any one help with this? I want to set up the airport so I can provide wifi to an IPod but i cant get XP to connect properly it said i have limited or no connectivity.

Its working now but the windows computer still cant get the aiprort base station to start a dialup connection. I dont wnat to usr the ipod for this all the time. Any ideas how to get XP to force the Airport Base Station to open a dial up connection.

  • Challenge: Spanning Tree Control Between 2 links from Switch DELL M6220 to 2 links towards 2 switches CISCO 3750 connected with an stack (behavior like one switch for redundancy)

    Hello,
I have an Spanning tree problem when i conect  2 links from Switch DELL M6220 (there are blades to virtual machines too) to 2 links towards 2 switches CISCO 3750 connected with an stack (behavior  like one switch  for redundancy, with one IP of management)
In dell virtual machine is Spanning tree rapid stp, and in 3750 is Spanning tree mode pvst, cisco says that this is not important, only is longer time to create the tree.
I dont know but do you like this solutions i want to try on sunday?:
Could Spanning tree needs to work to send one native vlan to negociate the bdpus? switchport trunk native vlan 250
Is it better to put spanning-tree guard root in both 3750 in the ports to mitigate DELL to be root in Spanning Tree?
Is it better to put spanning- tree port-priority in the ports of Swicht Dell?
¿could you help me to control the root? ¿Do you think its better another solution? thanks!

  • MacOSX 10.3.8 system with original Airport card can't connect via WPA/WPA2

    Hi all,
My WiFi network consists of an Airport Express running a WPA/WPA2 Personal network and 802.11b/g compatibility, upon which 3 Macs (all with Airport Extreme/G or /Draft-N cards) and 2 PCs (both G compatible) merrily connect to.
I have an old PowerMac G4 which I've just fitted with an original non-Extreme Airport card, and having updated MacOSX 10.3.8 with Airport 4.2 to enable WPA access, it still refuses to connect to the network; I get the "There was an error joining the Airport network ..." when the correct password is entered.
My understanding is that while the old Airport cards don't support WPA2, they do support WPA and thus if the Airport Express network is set to WPA/WPA2 and b/g compatibility (which I'm assuming is some kind of all encompassing compatibility mode, given there's also sole WPA2 options) then it shouldn't have any problems connecting to the network. What am I missing here?
    Cheers, Ben.

I am having the exact same problem. Powerbook G4; original factory installed airport card; with Panther 10.3.9 OS plus updated 4.2 Airport Admin. Utility. It will NOT connect to my Airport Express set to the WPA/WPA2, which is working fine with my iPod touch.
When I get to the screen requesting password for my chosen airport network ("Wireless Security: WPA Personal), the "OK" button is grayed out and it will not even let me submit a password to connect. Can somebody help?

  • Can't connect via Airport using D-Link

    Hello to everyone,
I recently brought a MBP and I'm not able to connect to my wireless connection (Modem D-Link DWL-2000AP+), the laptop detects the network but when selected I receive a "Connection Timeout".
The Airport has the last update.
    I have tried:
    - Change the channel.
    - Change the password.
    - Change the encryption.
I'm still not able to connect in anyway. I'm afraid that otherwise the computer is useless. All my Windows computers are able to connect without any fuss, my iPhone connects to the same network as well with no problem.
    What you guys suggest?
    Thank you all

    Hello,
Sorry to take so much time to answer. Yes I try WEP Hex, WEP ASCII, and without password.
I now have WEP Hex, I still see the name of the network on my Airport icon, but when selected say:
    "Connection timeout"
The problem is that all computer here are connecting correctly (Windows PC's and Laptops), and I could not ask to everyone to change just because of me.
BTW the modem is one step on the right side of my desk.
Any ideas? Could be firmware of the D-Link? It happens the same with a Linksys.

  • Windows XP client can't connect to AirPort Extreme AP with WEP enabled.

    Hello,
I have big problem with Mac Mini AirPort Extreme working in AP mode with Windows XP client.
Some time ago, AP refuse to connect Windows XP clients (notebook) when WEP is enabled (40/128 bit, same problem), while before that, everything work perfect.
On other hand, iPhone can connect using WEP without an problem.
When WEP is turned off, XP client can connect but this is not acceptable for me.
I must notice that friend of mine have absolute SAME PROBLEM which rise almost at same time few months ago. They have Mac Mini and XP notebook (different then mine) which can not connect with WEP turned on, while his iPod touch work!
I guess that this happened due AirPort Firmware upgrade included in some of Apple software update.
Does anybody have similar problem or know the solution?
    My AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86)
    Wireless Card Locale: Worldwide
    Wireless Card Firmware Version: 1.4.16.2
    Current Wireless Network: Mac mini
    Wireless Channel: 11
    Tnx in advance.

mikikg, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sorry but this is a known issue.
The only solution is to get a real wireless router instead of using your Mac mini as a base station.

  • Can i connect an airport extreme (us version) with a new airport express (euro version) ?

Hi, I lived in the USA for a while and moved back to Europe.
I have an airport extreme (US purchased) which i would like to link with a new airport express (EURO purchased) in order to extent my network.
    Is this possible ?
I have multiple problems doing so, which leads me to believe the US and EURO product might not be compatible.
Thx for your kind assistance, G.

Connecting routers wirelessly to extend a wireless network is known as a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Although AirPorts can extend other AirPorts in a WDS, they only work with a few non-AirPort ones...like some Linksys models.
Here are a few articles on the subject:

Another option, although maybe not as practical in your circumstance, is to connect the AirPort base directly using an Ethernet cable to the Linksys. Then setting up the AirPort as a bridge.

  • Intel pro wireless card can not connect

Rather than blaming devs for putting out faulty software, if I were you I'd look at myself - the PEBKAC problem . So an upgrade broke it. When was this? What packages where upgraded? Check your pacman log (yes, it exists).
You are aware the module name for Intel's wireless cards changed? Instead of referring to the card model it's now iwlcore and iwlagn. But then again, if you let udev figure it out, there shouldn't be the slightest problem in that upgrade.
Care to share any of your cherished errors? Without them there's not much we can do. The BBS has been out of crystal bowls for a long time.
Dear mr. B, I do not blame anybody anything. I report, as is, it does not work. On my system, in the hope that someone have something meaningful to say, not because I hoped for you to call me names. I do not know what your acronym means, and I do not wish to find out, since it appearently is there to make me less. I do not care for that.
The kernel modules that are loaded on my system, and was back when I had working wifi support, are iwlcore and iwlagn. I do not know that the iwlwifi-4965-ucode package is used for anything, I installed it because the before-mentioned wiki page recommends that, and I did get working support. I do not try to configure it by hand, I trust udev/hal/whatever is there to handle the hardware.
But, sorry for repeating, since some time, I can not connect to an access point. No matter if I try cli commands or use wicd or networkmanager applets. The result appears to be the same, there is no error from iwconfig, which does not succeed.
I can't even remember the date it went wrong, but i know that the kernel was updated as a part of that particular update. rolling back the kernel did not help though.

I can use the Remote app on my iphone to connect with my itunes library on my computer, but I can't connect to the Apple TV using home sharing with another computer in the house.  I am using the same ID and password that the apple tv uses to connect with the other computer.  Also how do I check what version of IOS that my iphone is using?

    Version:
iOS Settings>General About (or it'll say when you hook it up to iTunes)
Are all the devices on the same physical network?  I think you're saying all are set up using the same home sharing credentials.
If you've not done so restart all devices and your router.
If you can get any of the devices connected by ethernet to reduce the wifi burden that may help but to be honest I would not expect simply beoing on wifi to prevent devices/computers appearing in the list.
Does the other computer have any firewall or port blocking software running?

  • Multiple locations with the same wi-fi name, can't connect

I am on a colleg campus that has multiple different locations for a wi-fi network that has the same name. Sometimes when I am on it in one spot and then switch to a different location my macbookpro will not acknowledge/see the network anymore. I can't connect to the internet now and I am extremely frustrated, does anyone know how to fix this?

Delete all Locations and use Automatic.
When you enter the password for each sub-node, OS X remmebers it, so if you travel it just connects to the next sub-node.
Locations is used for different networks with totally different setups, not just passwords.
