yes I do I have a few 2950's that I run with WD red drives they work fine. moslty that stuff is to keep warranties upheld and to keep repeat customers coming back. its up to you how much you want to deal with. some of the raid functions and raid configurations may not be available if they have custom firmware from Xbyte or require custom firmware installed.personally if the server hardware is past dell's warranty I am using the cheapest most reliable drives I can get my hands on because at that point its on me any way. that also means wiping the PERC controller to default and rolling with default settings and then modifying them to what I need.Then again it goes back to how much responsibility do you want on you for this hardware. if you want as little as possible play by your distributors rules and have little or take it all yourself...

I am pricing out some refurbished Dell PowerEdge servers primarily from xbyte.com and received feedback from them that they are extremely apprehensive about using non-dell storage in the server due to the custom firmware in the drives themselves. That being said they offer non-dell hard drives with custom xbyte firmware which apparently work... and yet they will still report a non-mission critical error in the manager.
Does anyone run production servers with 3rd party drives? If it is not recommended to do so, does anyone run the "Xbyte drive firmware" in production servers?

    As part of an effort to internationalize our product we're testing on machines with host names that include non-ASCII characters (accented e's and whatnot). When trying to send mail from these machines we're getting:

    Looking at a network trace I see the EHLO command being sent as
    EHLO test[0xe9][0xdf]\r\n
    where the machine name is testéß. From a Unicode table 0xe9 0xdf = é ß.
    I found a reference from RFC 5336 (SMTP Extension for Internationalized Email Addresses) that says the hostname in the EHLO must be in the form of ACE (ASCII-compatible encoding) labels:
    3.7.1. The Initial SMTP Exchange
    When an SMTP connection is opened, the server normally sends a
    "greeting" response consisting of the 220 response code and some
    information. The client then sends the EHLO command. Since the
    client cannot know whether the server supports UTF8SMTP until after
    it receives the response from EHLO, any domain names that appear in
    this dialogue, or in responses to EHLO, MUST be in the hostname form,
    i.e., internationalized ones MUST be in the form of ACE labels.
    ACE encoding for my machine would be: java.net.IDN.toASCII("test4éß") --> "xn--testss-eva".
    I'm not sure if this RFC applies in this case - I didn't know anything about the guts of SMTP until yesterday - but it makes sense that you'd need to escape the hostname in the EHLO until you can negotiate capabilities.
    Looking at the JavaMail API it seems that if I were to call SMTPTransport.helo(String domain) myself without going through the higher-level Transport class that maybe I could work around the issue, but I haven't looked into it enough to know if that's feasible.
    Is anyone familiar with this problem? I'm using JavaMail 1.4.2 on Windows 2003 and Exchange as my SMTP server.

    Same problem here (or at least in part). Some .mac folders did no longer show any messages, while they were there and could be seen online and with Thunderbird. After your remark I changed the name of a folder which contained a "´" and now it works. It is really strange because there is another folder with a "¨" in it which does not work (I will test if the name change works with this folder as well in a minute) whilst there is another one with such name which works fine. The update really messed up Mail and in Dutch we just use such characters so Mail without supporting them will be rather useless for me...

  • Does Xserve with OS 10.6.4 support multipath on non-apple storage now?

    We are installing 3 Xserves and a non-apple storage (Compellent, dual controller) at customer site, Xserve is running MAC OS 10.6.4 and have installed Xsan. One fibre cable on Xserve is connected to the fibre switch.
    During test we found that if LUNs are mapped from multiple WWPNs in one WWNN, The volumes create by Xsan will have link communication and performance issue. We queried Compellent Support and got answered that Apple server doesn't support multipathing on non-apple storage so far, so we have to use only one active link per WWNN.
    Is that true and is there any solution for the issue?

    In the Compellent Tech Tip I found following description:
    MacOS may incorrectly issue commands to all Storage Center Ports with the same World Wide Node Name (wwnn), even though the volume is only mapped out of a single Storage Center Port. Commands down invalid paths will be rejected by Storage Center. MacOS may not properly acknowledge that the commands were rejected. There will be data integrity issues if the MacOS does not properly acknowledge that commands failed.
    All front end primary connections from a controller will have the same wwnn, but unique World Wide Port Names (wwpn or wwn). Each controller in a clustered controller system will have a unique wwnn. Front end reserve ports will have a different wwnn than the primaries.
    This behavior has been seen with Storage Center 4.0.2 and 4.1.3 along with MacOS 10.5.3 and 10.5.4. This issue is assumed to exist with all versions of Storage Center and MacOS 1.5.2-1.5.4. It could possibly affect earlier versions of MacOS.
    WORKAROUND
    The workaround for this issue is to ensure that a Mac Server can only view one front end primary port for each controller. This can be done through zoning. For MacOS, it is recommended that zones are setup so that a Mac Server can only see a single front end primary connection from each controller. Only a single Mac port should be used. At this time, Apple does not support multipathing with non-Apple Storage. A volume should only be mapped out of a single port on Storage Center to a single port on the Mac Server.
    What my issue is I connected two active front end ports on each controller to Xserve, that made Xserve "see" two WWPNs in the same WWNN, So regarding the content above, I should connect only one active front end port to the Xserve on each controller. Do you agree?

  • Manually Moving VMS from HOST to HOST *WITH* Shared SAS Storage

    Hi,
    Environment will be 2 Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V servers.
    They will be connect via shared SAS.  These are two identical IBM servers with shared SAS storage
    I am hoping to eliminate using MS Clustering of the Hyper-V servers just to keep things straight forward.
    In the event, I had a complete failure of one of the  physical server Hyper V hosts, I was hoping be able to manually add/import (not sure what the terminology is here) and run the virtual machines on the second host until the first is repaired.
    If there is third party software that can do this, I would entertain it.
    In VMware (I had two hosts and would manually remove them from inventory on one server and add them to a second server). 
    Ideally, if I could keep both Hyper-V hosts in a Windows Workgroup and as vanilla as possible.

    Sorry for the late reply.  I have been researching all I can. And thanks to all for your patience and help!
    Let's start with the hardware to help paint the picture:
    2 @ IBM X3550 M4
    1 @ IBM V3700
    The two X3550's are going to be connected via 6GB SAS Cards (2/server for redundacy)
    Current environment (residing on VMWare with older IBM Xseries servers DS3524 connect via SAS connections)  40 users total.
    Windows servers are:
    1 @ SBS 2011 (One and only AD/PDC)
    2 @ Windows 2008 Servers that are CRM (these are Windows Member Servers)
    5 @ Windows 2003 servers that are going to be replace with Windows 2008 Servers (these are Windows Member servers) (low usage servers)
    Just to recap:
    The current environment running VMware 4.1 has both IBM X3500 servers able to see a  single 1.5 TB lun (SAS connected) presented by the DS3524.
    Currently, in VMware, I can see the same LUN on both servers.  I have all my VM's on HOSTA, if HOSTA should suffer a system board failure, I manually connect to HOSTB with the VMware client and add the VMs that I can see on the shared LUN
    and add them to HOSTB.
    My understanding is that its strongly recommend that my DC (not sure if they are implying PDC or BDC) on a physical server.  My hesitation is now I have to introduce a DC to SBS 2011 and manage a physical server and deal with with SBS 2011's quirks.
    So I was hoping that if I presented a LUN to both my HyperV hosts (In a Workgroup), and created on my VMs on hostA, if something went very bad with HOSTA,  I could connect to HOSTB and "Import" them and manually start the VMs, especially since
    SBS 2011 is sensitive.
    The client is okay with some downtime, so if the process is supported and works, then I am okay with doing the work.
    Clustering or even Replicas will add:
    Complexity to the environment
    Patching needs to be carefully planned as it would not look good to have to failover due to a Windows update on the primary host.
    The tech's that support that environment will now need to know about Clustering and/or Replication ontop of the SAN stuff
    I am looking at Veeam, Double-Take to see if they can work with 2 @ 2012 Hyper-V hosts configured in a Workgroup.
    The SBS 2011 is the "hinge" that will make or break the success of this project.  I personally love the way 2012 Hyper-V works, but it would be great if a physical server outside of the HyperV hosts was not required.

  • Odd netowrking issues on 2 Dell PowerEdge servers

    Hi, we have recently installed two Dell PowerEdge servers both set-up with Windows Server 2008 R2. I used the Dell Systems Management disk to install the OS which pre-loads certain drivers, etc.
    Since the install I have been trying to track down and fix some very strange behaviour with both servers, in particular with MS Exchange 2007 and IIS.
    The issues on server 1 (file server) are no access to Windows Updates (0x80072EE2), certain users on other VPN sites having problems accessing certain areas of our Intranet that require authentication, odd problems using IE on the server - for example
    I can go to Google, carry out a search but when I click on a result it just sits there waiting for Google. There are no issues with users on the same site, and there are no issues accessing the server shares from any site.
    The issues on server 2 (Exchange server) are even more odd and have me rapidly pulling out my hair. With the site we can send and receive between this server and an old Exchange 2003 server with no problems, Public Folder replication from the old server
    to the new is occurring with no problems and we can send messages with large attachments both to external users and users on other sites. However when we start looking at incoming connections this is where it gets odd. Incoming external messages over 4Mb are
    delayed and eventually bounced - our provider says that they are getting timeouts. Incoming messages with attachments from two other internal Exchange 2007 sites are getting delayed and from one sites are not getting through at all. Messages without attachments
    are not getting through at all. In the Exchange logs I am seeing Connection Timeout and Connection Dropped messages.
    I am very sure that the problem is not with message size as all parameter relating to message size are set to 100Mb. I know it is not a firewall issue as redirecting incoming external messages to the old Exchange server is fine.
    To my mind this looks like there is something on these servers which is messing with http/https/smtp when communicating outside the local subnet. I have checked for viruses and mal-ware and for testing purposes disabled AV and firewall but this makes no
    difference.
    I have two other PowerEdge server on another site with similar configurations which have been working fine for 18 months. The only big difference I can see between the servers is that these two are the only one where I used the Dell Systems Management disk
    to install the OS. I have Googled 80072EE2 and it does appear that other have seen the same problem and their way to resolve it was to wipe and reinstall directly from the Microsoft disk and no use the Dell Systems Management Disk.
    However, this is not an option here as these servers are both in a live environment (I know, should have made sure everything was running properly before going live, but these had to be put in place rapidly to replace failing servers).
    From what I can see of the servers it does appear that somewhere along the line Dell have used files which are causing some networking issues on these two servers - can anyone advise me if there is a reasonably straight-forward way to remove the network
    components form the servers and then reinstate from the Microsoft disk?
    I have tried the fixed relating to Windows Update from the suggestion offered searching for 80072EE2.
    I have tried installing the latest Dell drivers for the network adaptor, and also the latest Broadcom ones.
    I have tried switching off various Offload settings on the NIC as suggested by other although that was more relating to Hyper-V issues.
    Anything else I should be looking at, or can anyone tell me what else to look for on the servers?

    Based on your description, we have many different problems in two servers as below,
    In the file server.

    I noticed that you mentioned that you have tried the fixed relating to Windows Update. Have we solved this issue? And another issue, IE could access Google but can’t access
    the links in search result. It seems that this issues are related to name resolution. To verify if the name resolution works fine. Please ping the DNS server at first. If we can ping DNS server, we can also ping
    www.google.com and other domain names to verify the function of name resolution. Please try to use ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns command in server 1. And the DNS port(53) was opened. After this, if the problem
    still exist, please involve the administrator of DNS server to help verify if the domain name resolution has some problems.

    I’m a little unclear about this part. If the VPN connection has set up successful, it is possible that the user need be authenticate when the user access some resource of the
    Intranet. So what is the certain areas and what prompt we received.
    In the Exchange server.

    We can send messages but we can’t receive messages, it was delayed or it can’t get through. And I notice that you mentioned that the message size is
    not the problem. To verify if the network have problems about the size messages. We can also download a file whose size is over 5Mb from the Internet. If we can download the file, maybe it’s not the network problems.
    -> I know it is not a firewall issue as redirecting incoming external messages to the old Exchange server is fine.
    Maybe we could also turn off the firewall temporarily to see if the firewall block some connection.
    -> To my mind this looks like there is something on these servers which is messing with http/https/smtp when communicating outside the local subnet.
    If we think the http/https/smtp are related to this issues, maybe we could check if all ports about this service was opened.
    And due to server 2 is an Exchange server, there might be some wrong with the Exchange services. We have the related Exchange forum with professional
    to deal with this issue. If there are still some problems with Exchange server, maybe we can try to create a new thread about Exchange.

  • Dell PowerEdge SC1420 with Ultra 320 scsi dirves

    I am having a problem with installing Solaris 10 on the Dell PowerEdge SC1420 with Ultra 320 SCSI drives using PERC 320/DC Controller. The installation hangs at Configuring Devices and gives me some output messages:
    NOTICE: MSG From Adapter: NMI ISR: NMI_BUS_INTERFACE_UNIT_ERROR
    NOTICE: MSG From Adapter: NormPrioCommand was received with Fib StructType = 0xf
    The notices keeps cycling.
    Has anyone experience this issue?
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Update:
    I've got the box to install Solaris 10, however, I had to remove 2 sticks of memory. Originally, the box came with 4GB of memory but now I am down to 2GB. Don't know why this is the case but I am able to proceed with the installation without any error or notice messages. Can someone explain to me why this is the case? I will put the memory sticks back in and boot with the OS installed to see what happens and will update my results.

  • Restore Database to non-ASM Storage - Issue with Bigfile Tablespace

    I have been testing a restore of my prod database that uses ASM (and oracle managed files) for storage to a different server and non-ASM storage. Oracle version is 10g EE. My database has one bigfile tablespace and it's datafile is about 250GB. The restore fails and it has something to do with the bigfile tablespace.
    Here is the rman restore script:

    Why at the beginning is it "creating" datafile 11? Then it doesnt even say it is "restoring" that datafile. Only restoring datafiles 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,12,13,14,15, and 16.
    When it creates datafile 11 it is only 26GB, that is much smaller than it should be according to v$datafile view on source prod database. Also even though it says it is creating datafile 11 as /ora02/db/ehr/apollolob01.dbf it actually creates it as an oracle managed file at /ora02/db/ehr/EHR/datafile/o1_mf_apollolo_6crxyqs2_.dbf
    After the datafiles are restored the "switch datafile all" command fails:

    So my question is how do I get this database restored to non-ASM (and non omf)?

    So I tried using a different scn with my "set until scn #####" then the restore created 2 datafiles. The datafile for apollolob and apollotab02.dbf. So I think I have narrowed the problem to be that I am not using the correct scn number so RMAN can successfully restore those datafiles and recreates them instead. How do I find the correct scn to use to do a successful restore of the entire database? I have seen different methods on the web, but cant figure it out. Ive used "select archivelog_change#-1 from v$database;" and I also did "list backup of archivelog all" and used the latest sequence number. How can I find the correct scn to use so the entire database will restore?

    You can do what you want to do just fine. Hyper-V / Windows Server 2012 R2 can use SMB 3.0 share instead of a block storage (iSCSI/FC/etc). See:

    There would be no shared disk and no CSV just SMB 3.0 folder both hypervisor hosts would have access to. Much simplier to use. See:

    You'll have however a limited solution as your single physical server being a file server would be a single point of failure.
    You can use Storage Spaces just fine but you cannot use Clustered Storage Spaces as in this case you'll have to take away your SAS spindles from your R720 box and mount them into SAS JBOD (make sure it's certified). So you get rid of an active components
    (CPU, RAM) and keep more robust all-passive SAS JBOD as your physical shared storage. Better then a single Windows-running server but for a true fault tolerance you'll have to have 3 SAS JBODs. Not exactly cheap :) See:

    Alternative way would be using Virtual SAN similar to VMware VSAN in this case you can get rid of a physical shared storage @ all and use cheap high capacity SATA spindles (and SATA SSDs!) instead of an expensive SAS.

    Add "Targets" attribute to the connection pool. You may
    get an idea how it looks like by searching config.xml
    for "targets". If target servers are not set, the pool won't be
    deployed and can not be used to a create datasource.

  • TREX - Configuring Distributed Slave with Decentralized Data Storage

    I am creating a distributed TREX environment with decentralized data storage with 3 hosts.  The environment is running TREX 7.10 Rev 14 on Windows 2003 x64.  These are the hosts:
    Server 01p: 1st Master NameServer, Master Index Server, Master Queue Server
    Server 02p: 2nd Master NameServer, Slave Index Server
    Server 03p: Slave NameServer, Slave Index Server (GOAL; Not there yet)
    The first and second hosts are properly set up, with the first host creating the index and replicating the snapshot to the slave index server for searching.  The third host is added to the landscape.  When I attempt to change the role of the third host to be a slave for the Master IS and run a check on the landscape, I receive the following errors:

    The installs were all performed in the same with, with storage on the "E:" drive using a local install on the stand-alone installation as described in the TREX71InstallMultipleHosts and TREX71INstallSingleHosts guides provided.
    Does anybody know what I should try to do to resolve this issue to add the third host to my TREX distributed landscape?  There really weren't any documents that gave more information besides the install documents.

    Many thanks for the connection. We found out, that the error message is wrong. It can be ignored, if you press 'Shift' and button 'Deploy' (TREXAdmin tool -> Landscape Configuration).  We will fix this error in the next Revision (Revision 25) for TREX 7.1.

  • Text Messaging in Japanese (or other language with non-Roman script)

    Is it possible to send/receive text messages written in non-Roman characters with Verizon? 
    More specifically, I'm using a Droid 2 with Verizon, and I'm trying to text a friend in Japanese.  She has an iPhone (AT&T), and is physically in the U.S. (so I'm not asking about international text messaging).  I've already installed apps on my Droid (e.g. OpenWNN, or Simeji) to input Japanese, which work fine in and of themselves, and the Droid of course displays Japanese text or other languages just fine on the Browser or in E-mails.
    However, I'm having lots of trouble with Text Messaging.  When I send a message containing Japanese text (typed in perfectly fine with OpenWNN or whatever), she either never gets the message, or the text comes out unreadable (as ???????).  Messages with a mix of Roman and non-Roman characters typically show the Roman characters ok, but the non-Roman ones (i.e. Japanese) are garbled.  If she sends me a message containing any non-Roman characters, I generally don't get the message at all (i.e. not even garbled-- just no message at all).   This deficiency seems to be specific to Text Messaging, as far as I can tell.  I can send and receive e-mails containing Japanese just fine, read foreign language web pages, and type in Japanese into search boxes on those web pages and so on with the Droid.  However, sending an e-mail message to (myphone#)@vtext.com, predictably, results in any Japanese text being garbled, though Roman characters come through just fine.
    Is this perhaps something specific to Verizon's network?  Or is text messaging in non-Roman scripts just inherently impossible?  My friend says she knows others who can successfully text in non-Roman scripts (e.g. Korean Hangul, Japanese Kana or Kanji), and claims some of these folks are Verizon customers too.  A search on droidforums.com yielded someone who supposedly could text in Korean within Verizon.  So, I'm hoping this is possible, and I'm just missing something. However, this is perhaps all secondhand information and rumor.
    (Incidentally, I know for certain that messaging with non-Roman scripts is possible in general.  During my last vacation in Japan, I rented a phone there, and could send messages in English or Japanese scripts.  However, I believe the phones there actually have their own e-mail addresses, and so the service there is more like regular e-mail-- my understanding is that text messaging as we know it in the U.S. is a distinct technology, though I could well be wrong.)
    So, to restate my question: is it possible to text message with non-Roman scripts with Verizon?  Has anyone out there done this successfully-- if so what did you do, or what app did you use?  Or is it in fact impossible? (e.g. Maybe text messaging here only uses 7 or 8 bits, instead of 14 or 16 needed to encode all the various Asian, European, and other scripts?)

    I'm trying to figure this out as well, but my understanding on the matter is that Verizon's CDMA network uses unicode which will display, roman characters, loa, thai, and serveral other languages, but not hirigana, kanji, katakana, or simplified or traditional chinese.  The Romaji should work however.  It would be nice to hear some input from a Verizon rep on the subject, because like you my info is all second hand.
    If my understanding is correct, the simple answer is no, it's not possible.  

  • How to create a local, non-clustered storage pool

    I have setup a two-node Failover Cluster, with a shared SAS DAS. So far so good.
    One of the nodes also has internal disks that I wish to use for system backups.
    This storage pool should not be clustered, as the disks cannot be seen from the other node. The trouble is that as soon as I create the pool it gets added to the cluster (in failed state).
    In fact, the "Storage Pools" window in the server manager will only show me the "clustered storage spaces", with my internal disks in the Primordial pool.
    Get-StorageSubSystem will show me both subsystems (Clustered Storage Space on ... + Storage Spaces on node-1) but fails to create a storage pool on the "local" subsystem.
    How can I create a local, non clustered storage pool on internal disks ?

    Hi,
    SpackTime_ is right, the DA storage usually for the localdata backup, but if you want to use for remote computer backup, you can share a floder then you can storage your backup, but also that backup won't work the shared computer crash.
