DELL PowerVault via SAS - is it possible?

Hi all, I'm currently trying to sort out a way to wed a new MacPro (with Final Cut Server 1.5) to an existing DELL PowerVault MD RAID rack via SAS (this will also remain tied up to a Windows server for serving stuff to the offices we're in). I've got three FCP suites, each with a local RAID - total data on all of these equates to around 150,000+ files occupying about 5TB.
I've already given up on the notion the new setup would be fast enough for edit-in-place, we soon found the budget wouldn't take us that far yet, but the only solution our IT guys have turned up so far is connecting the RAID via regular Gigabit Ethernet as DELL do not create SAS drivers for OS-X... this would slow the workflow down so much I'd just have to abandon the idea of a server environment altogether... it would take weeks just to transfer all the projects over to it!!
The budget has all but gone, I practically blew it on the server in the belief the DELL rack would hitch up okay without much further investment... but this is all looking like turning into an expensive mistake
Anyone one else in a mixed PC/Mac environment with a possible solution???
Cheers!
Tom

Hi Thomas,
I too have the same issue.
But in my case I have a Dell PowerVault NF600 (NAS). I was using it as an edit-in-place over a quad GigE card (on the NF600) before FCSrv. And now I'm using it as an EIP with FCSrv.
Since network mount is not as reliable as a SAN, and Qmaster insists in copying files even if all computer has access if it's not a SAN I'm starting to think the same way (Attach the NF600 as fast as possible to the FCSrv).
One big problem is the old Mac-PC problem. I do not think that a SAS card can be inserted on a Mac Pro and connect to the NF600 (or MD) and work ok. I didn't find anything like this on my search (but this doesn't assure it's not possible).
So the only option would be over Ethernet. There's iSCSI and SAN over LAN.
I've tried the Microsoft iSCSI Target but there wasn't too many free (or for trials) initiators. One that you may try is the GlobalSAN ( http://www.studionetworksolutions.com/products/product_detail.php?pi=11 ).
One solution that I'm trying right now and it seems to work (since is recommended by Bob Zelin at http://magazine.creativecow.net/article/build-your-own-affordable-san-that-iwork si ) is the metaLan Client and Server ( http://www.tiger-technology.com/ ).
This makes your normal LAN connection as a SAN without the need for fiber.
Of course, good switches and good multiple port NICs (for the server) and Link-Aggregation is recommended.
Look at http://www.small-tree.com for NICs and switches.
Hope this helps!
If you find anything further or have any doubts, please let me know.

  • Xserve g5 with dell powervault 220s via scsi

i have a fully working xserve g5. i recently added an adaptec scsi host adapter 39160.
the box booted no problems and recognized a scsi controller.
i want to attach a dell powervault 220s to this scsi controller and use it for external storage. I have the PV booted and connected using 1 scsi cable. to the xserve.
when i try to boot up the xserve it grey screens saying to hold the power button.
it does this every time. what do i need to do to get this system working?

dang, what about an adaptec AIC-7899? should that
    work?
Nope. Here's their announcement that Mac users can take a hike:
    http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/support/updates/mac_osxinfo.htm
ATTO is pretty much the only choice with 10.4.x. A bit pricy, but it works fine in our Xserve G5.

  • Dell PowerVault MD1000 with Mac OS X Server 10.5 (mac pro with fiber connec

Hey Guys. Its time that i add a bulk amount of storage to our mac network.
Currently Our network consists of one mac server which is a Mac Pro with Mac OSX Server 10.5 installed on it with 4 x 750GB Hard Drives with a couple of client machines. I now need to add atleast another 6TB to the network. This needs to be seen as the server as one drive so that 6TB needs to be raid prosume (raid 5)
Now in the Mac Pro server we have a Fibre Card that we dont currently use with 2 slots. My Plan is to buy a Dell PowerVault™ MD1000 (http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...ulmd1000sata) and put in the amount of hard drives i require into the Dell Storage.
Would this work. If i bought the Dell PowerVault™ MD1000, would i beable to hook this upto the mac server and use it as a storage drive? Although i do no networking. Im still very new to this.
Ideally im looking for something similar to an Xserve Raid, but with out the Apple price tag on the outside if you guys no what i mean.
    Best,
    Nathaniel

You would at least need a SAS/SATA controller - preferably a hardware RAID one, much like the one bundled with this unit - but it also needs to be OS X compatible.
I would look for something that is known to work, not something you "cobble" together.
The FibreChannel card does you no good if you haven't got a device with FC ports.

  • Oracle  Secure Backup- Lib Dell PowerVault 114x

    Hi,
I am a beginner in tape a backup solutions.
    I have installed osb 10.4. My library is Dell™ PowerVault™ 114x
If i try configured Lib and tape with sg_map -i -x
    [root@bosmgmt ~]# sg_map -i -x

    -- Tape is recongnized by osb : /dev/sg4 1 0 1 0 1 /dev/nst0 IBM ULTRIUM-HH4 B6W1
    But Library not.
I found in matrix of compability in this link
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/products/secure-backup/learnmore/osb-tapedevicematrix-520156.pdf
    and Dell™ PowerVault™ 114x is not.
Could i install driver or modify file for osb recognize this library??
    Thanks in advance

Looking at the Dell website I would say that this unit is not a tape autoloader or library, it is just an enclosure that holds up to two drives. From our sg output I would say you have a single drive and that is what is being seen by the OS (and therefore OSB). I don't think there is any other mechanics to automatically load/unload tapes from the drive, so it is effectively a standalone drive.
    Thanks
    Rich

  • Compatibility between ESXi 5.1 and Dell PowerVault TL2000 (PCI-E SAS HBA 6Gbps Dual Port)

    Hello Folks,
    I have the following environment:
2 PowerEdge R720 Servers with ESXi 5.1 OS
    15 VM's (Win2008 64x R2) in one of R720 Servers
Replication method is vRanger 6.0.2 with VA in Both ESXi Servers
I would like to use a PowerVault TL2000 (LTO5) to backup user files of VM's, but I need to install this device on ESXi 5.1 Server and access it from VM's.  Dell has informed this is not supported by them, so I would like if anybody has the similar environment and if it works.
The connection Card that will be used is PCI-E SAS HBA 6Gbps Dual Port and Backup software is Symantec Backup Exec Server Express Essentials 2012

  • PB Al 15" won't display to Dell 2001FP via DVI

After hooking up a Dell 2001FP display to my PowerBook Al 1.5Ghz/15" via DVI, the external display displays nothing. The Mac senses the display per Monitors system preference and Apple System Profiler but nothing is output to the display. I'm using Dell's bundled DVI cable (which appears to be a DVI-D single link, per http://www.comsol.com.au/dvi.asp). DVI works just fine via PB G4 1.5Ghz/12".
As a workaround, the VGA is working fine from the PowerBook to this display. I'd really, really much rather use DVI. Is there any way to get this PB Al 15" to work via DVI to the Dell 2001FP? Possibly via some different kind of cable?
Scanning the Apple forums didn't get me a direct answer. I vaguely remember something unique about the 15" DVI with certain third party configurations.
    PB G4 1.5Ghz/15"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Dell 2001FP

    Try resetting your NVRAM…
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Another thing to try is to change the ends of the DVI-D cable. I too am using the included cable that came with my Dell display and it works just dandy. Obviously if it works with your 12" PowerBook then the problem is with the 15" PowerBook.
It is possible that the 15" is trying to display at a setting that your display can't handle. What you can do is to open the Displays System Preference, click on the Gather Displays button and try different settings. Make sure you start at a 60Hz refresh rate.
To be honest it's a bit weird that you're having a problem because it, as I'm sure you're aware, should just work.

  • SSO to a weblogic application via a header variable, possible?

    Hi
Is it possible to provide single sign on to a weblogic application via a header variable?
We would like to follow a similar model to what's used with OC4J at:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10761_01/doc/oam.1014/e10356/osso.htm#BJFJBCHB
    Any feedback is appreciated.

Yes this is possible via a custom Identity Assertion Provider if you are using Weblogic security. You can write the J2EE provider to extract the header and map the user to a LDAP user when you configure the authentication provider to use the same user store as OAM.

  • IMac 7,1 turning internal screen off while watching a movie via output (second display), possible?

iMac 7,1 turning internal screen off while watching a movie via output (second display), is it possible with Lion?

Actually, Plex does the best job by placing a black background to the internal iMac screen it's called Blanking.
However that does not turn off the backlit which is very bright on the iMac 24" also the internal screen will draw more power that way.   As you probably know running bootcamp you can turn off the internal screen while watching a movie on the external.  This isn't a hardware limitation, I hope Lion has this feature.

  • VL10B via WM picking not possible

    Dear all,
I am working on STO scenorio , via Vl10B i created delivery for STO purchase order, but when i am navigate through delivery document it went to VL03N and i am editing the  delivery and i am  able to pick if stoarge location not WM managed..
If storage is WM managed i am not able to create Transfer order via subsequent function, it is in display mode. i can proceed with LT03 & VL02N i can able to create transfer order.
so my requirement is i want to picking through navigation from VL10B. (it is possible for non WM managed stoarge location). how to active create transfer order in menu bar?
    Thanks
    Muthuraman>D

    Hi,
It is because you have not maintained material in warehouse.this is the maine reason.if you maintaine the stock in warehouse then you can do it from VL10B.
so check it once.the material should create with warehouse views also.
if you want to see the exact error just you select the line item and click on icon "log for delivery creation" then one line item will be  generated, select this and click on the button Notes, then you can see the error.
    Thank you,

  • Physical to Virtual Cluster using SAS - is it possible?

We're prepping to dramatically increase our IT infrastructure here, and I need a little advice. We're changing our practice management software from something running on a relatively lightweight database to MS SQL Server. With that we're planning a big upgrade
in computing and storage, plus we'd like to add failover clustering to help guarantee a certain level of service.
The current plan calls for 3 physical servers running WS2012R2 connected directly to a SAS array on an IBM DS3524. Physical server A will host the primary SQL Server database, plus a few light-usage VMs for testing and dev stuff. Physical server B will host
images and files, no SQL Server, plus a bunch of RDP VMs. Physical server C will  host a nightly copy of the primary database used for heavy reports, plus another couple of VMs for various network functions.
Ideally we would like to cluster the physical server A to a VM on physical server B. I'm unsure, though, if that can be done using the direct attach SAS drives. We do not want to set up an iSCSI SAN.
    Two questions, then:
Is this type of failover setup even possible?  If so, how would we set up a shared storage between a physical server and a VM on a second physical server using direct attached SAS?
If this isn't possible, would we be better off virtualizing the primary database and clustering the two VMs (best practices from our software vendor recommend virtualizing everything *except* the primary DB server), or setting up a physical failover from Server
A to Server C? In the event of a failure, server C would then find itself hosting 2 databases, though we could restrict reporting during a failure to lighten load.
    Thanks -

Discussed with more details on SpiceWorks here:
    SpiceWorks Discussion
    http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/462437-failover-cluster-2012r2-physical-to-virtual-sas
Making long story short: use shared VHDX. Quote:
You need to have 100% virtualized workload and then you can use shared VHDX placed on CSV placed on top of your clustered storage (SAS + Clustered Storage Spaces). That would do the trick. See:
    Shared
    VHDX

    Clustered Storage Spaces

Another option you've mentioned is to run clustered MSFT target on top of a SAS-back ended cluster. But that's both slow and ugly. Another option would be using clustered out-of-box iSCSI stack but that's not free and makes less sense as you have IBM SAS already.
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Connecting T530 with Dell U2713HM via DisplayPort, Windows 7 x64

Hi, I've been trying to get the full resolution (2560x1440) out of my new Dell monitor with no luck! Perhaps someone has an idea. I have previously connected to the monitor using a VGA cable (at 2048x1152) and a single link DVI  via a Mini Dock Plus Series 3 docking station (at 1920 x 1080).
When I finally got a mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable, I was very excited to finally get the full resolution out of the monitor, but I have not been able to connect with this cable!
Both the Windows Control Panel and the NVIDIA Control Panel (for the NVS 5400M) indicate that the monitor is connected (i.e. it shows up in the Window), but neither allow it to be connected.
The Windows Control Panel responds with "Unable to save display settings" when I try to connect, regardless of whether to "Extend desktop to this display" or "Show desktop only on 2".
The NVIDIA Control Panel shows the monitor under "Display/Set up multiple displays" under "NVS 5400M", but does not allow me to check the box labeled "Dell U2713HM".
I tried installing the associated drivers and display management software from Dell, but this did not change anything.
So I am totally stuck! I googled around, but not found anyone with similar problems with solutions that actually worked for me! Ideas welcome!

    Hello -
I was having the same issue and realized that I had not unlocked my phone (DroidX).  Once I did that, it immediately showed up in the Windows device manager.
    Good luck!
