Dell Precision T5810 Core options and GPU config? Running CC on virtual desktops?

Hi, two questions really but didn't want to start multiple threads.
I tried searching for answers to my questions but was not very successful so am trying to post. I am looking at buying some computers for our office which will be using the CC subscription for their workflow. Predominately this is short form video editing on Premiere (3-10min, AVCHD & DSLR mix, 2-3 camera steams, 50/50 just as straight streams/multicam), some light to mid graphics on After Effect and Photoshop then compression through Media Encoder.
Our media will be stored on a Small Tree shared storage server across a dedicated gigabit network.
As Dell have just launch their new workstations using the new version of the Xeon 16 series with DDR4 RAM I was thinking of going down that road. Would I be better getting the Hex Core 1650v3, 500GB HDD, 16GB DDR4 2133 RAM with either a Quadro K2200 or Firepro W5100, or Quad Core 1620v3, 500GB HDD, 16GB DDR4 2133 RAM with Quadro K4200?
As I understand it is important make sure systems are balanced between CPU, GPU, RAM and discs. Which of the above configs would perform better for our work, as I am not sure if the hex core will be more so with a lower GPU, or if the quad with a faster/more expensive GPU will perform better?
I know when it comes to GPU's a kick off would be to say ditch the workstation line for a GTX to save money, but we have a business deal with Dell as a business their 3 year support is an important consideration to us something they do not support if we chop and change out unsupported components such as a GTX card.
The other option I have been made by our IT department is that we could buy Dell servers, add graphics cards and run virtual desktops for the editors on them instead of buying stand alone towers. I have not really seen this being done before for video editing which suggests to me that this does not work for one reason or another, but I have not been able to find out much with my Google-fu (which again is probably a bad sign). Is this as bad an idea as I am assuming or is this a potential avenue.
Hopefully that has all made sense and apologies if I have not followed any forum etiquette, (first time so be kind!)
Thanks in advance for all and any help.
Ed

Hi,
Thank you for the replies. Having looked at the virtual option more closely I have discounted it as an option. Was never really something I wanted but our IT insisted I evaluated it as part of the process.
Regarding the workstations I had decided to go with the hex core E5 1650 option so it is good to hear I am heading down the right road! My reasoning for look at the new T5810 (DDR4 RAM) over the previous T3610 which had the 1650v2 (DDR3 RAM) was based on the fact the the cost difference on the website was only about 70-80 pounds. For that little difference it seemed like a good idea to buy the latest offering for future proofing. I will however get Dell to quote me for the two systems and see what the end result is after adding in 32GB of RAM.
I will also speak to them about their warranty as I was under the impression that by putting a non approved card in the system that if there were issues that involved the card in anyway then they would not assist. Either way I had decided to go Nvidia after reading up about the Firepro computability. Sadly I don't think I would have budget for the K4200 but the K2200 looks like it might be a decent performer as it is based on the maxwell architecture so I would expect it punch a bit above its weight. Would this act as the bottle neck in such a system or would it be fast enough to balance out a E5 1650 and 32GB RAM?
If it is only the card itself that will not be supported then I guess this is lesser risk and I could consider a consumer card. If I did go down the GTX route then looking at the price of GTX 770 (ideally I would want the 4GB version as the 2GB could be limiting for the future), there does not seem to be a lot in it between them and the GTX970. I would expect  due to the maxwell architecture that this would offer better performance at a lower power draw so I would expect the be better temps than the previous gen. If so then would this be a better option to go for?
For drives I will look at putting the media cache onto separate drives (we currently do this with our systems that run local storage), though will probably have to be HDD rather than SDD as I have them spare and fast running out of budget!
Thanks again for all comments.

I think you wanted to say 10.6.8. 10.8.6 does not exist.
The first thing I think is that zoom may be enabled. On Mac OS X 10.6.8, a way to disable it is to hold the Control key and scroll down with the mouse or trackpad until you can see the whole display. Another way would be to disable zoom in System Preferences > Universal Access

  • Gdm 2.28.0-1 and virtual desktops

    Hi,
Recently updated to gdm 2.28.0-1 and it has a whole new look, and is possibly the cause of a new problem.  I run openbox via the openbox session option available in gdm, and I noticed today that my virtual desktops are not what I specified in my rc.xml.  Speaking with the openbox developers, I got some specific information:
On the root window, _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS has already been set at time of openbox startup, and openbox respects that and does not set a new value from its config.  Is this new behavior known/expected?  Any way I can get it to stop doing that?
    thanks.

I've found some bugs on the issue:
    https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=444135
    http://bugzilla.icculus.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4040
Slightly surprised I haven't encountered it until now.  I may just ditch gdm, but I sortof like using it - for the odd occasion I want a different session, or I use to shutdown/reboot.

  • Screen Sharing and Virtual Desktop

Is there a way to force a new remote screen sharing connect to a "Virtual Desktop"?
In my experience, if another user is logged into the computer the new remote screen connection will be forced or given the option to connect to a virtual desktop. This will allow the new connection to run in the "background" without the first connection being influenced.
The issue is when a new remote connection is initiatied and no other connections are active the new connection will be shown on the computer's hardware monitor. i.e. No option is given to connect via a virtual desktop.
This is a security issue because a user can connect remotely and if he is the only connection on the computer he will have all his work shown on the hardware display.
I am hoping to find a way to force all remote connections to be on virtual desktops.

I guess its worth mentioning that although you can indeed screen share from Leopard to Tiger, it only works when you are on the same network. But Remote Desktop works across the internet...
Of course the trick to using Remote Desktop from a truly "remote" location elsewhere on the internet is that you have to be able to reach the IP of the computer you want to control, which can be tricky if its behind a NAT and the person your trying to reach is my Mom who has no idea how to configure her NAT, or firewall, or even find her IP address without my help.
Screen sharing Leopard to Leopard via iChat should be much more straight forward... translation: this will make my life much easier the next time my mom needs help.

  • Pypanel and apps starting in another virtual desktop

Hi, I began recently to use pypanel and I am liking it a lot. However I have a strange issue: if I am in a virtual desktop and launch an app in another virtual desktop (through a keybinding or from a terminal: let us say that the app is sent to the other virtual desktop by my openbox configuration file), then pypanel seems to be unable to detect it also when later I switch to that desktop: no window is displayed in the pypanel TASKS section. If I now kill pypanel and launch pypanel again then the windows are seen.
    Any suggestion?

Curiously, if I switch to the desktop where the application has been launched and launch there any other app, then also the first app is seen in the pypanel TASKS section

Windows will scale applications display or windows will not scale application display depending on how the application is coded.  Photoshop is coded in a way that its display is not scaled by windows.  Photoshop knows about your displays high pixel count not its resolution  so it uses its pixels  however it does not scale its UI to make it usable on your display.  Other application let Windows  scale their display output.   For example Microsoft default for is Surface Pro 3, 216 ppi display is to scale applications display up 150% so the surface pro 3 display which has 2160x1440 pixels a 216 ppi resolution look like at display with the user is using with 1440x960 pixels.  The Application works like the display is 1440x960 and Windows scale those pixels to the displays using the displays  2160x1440 pixels the effectively changing it resolution to 144ppi rather than the actual 216ppi.
The reg update  and external manifest file  effectively tells photoshop its working on such a size display display some number of pixel wide and some number photoshop uses that as the display size  in turn Windows scale those pixels to use the displays 2160x1440 pixels efector lowing its 216ppi resolution.  Photoshop CC 2014 2X UI would be like using windows 200% option applications would be shown the are working on a display 1080x720 instead of the Surface Pro 3 2160x1440. Note that 1080x720 does not meet PS requirement of 1024x768.  Photoshop UI would not fit on the Surface Pro 3 display..
Since you have a 4k display if you have CC 2014 you can use its 2x UI effectively Photoshop will be running on a 1920x1080 display and have half the resolution of you 4K display  3840x2160 pixels four native pixels are use as a single pixel.   1920x1080 pixels exceed PS requirement.

  • HP Pavilion dv7-4083cl (w/ Intel Core i5 and ATI GPU): Which is its normal temperature?

    Hello,
I have a question about HP Pavilion dv7-4083cl (w/ Intel Core i5 and ATI GPU):
    Which is its normal temperature?
    Environment: 24 °C (Celcius)
HWMonitor and Real Temp agrees with the numbers find below.
The two CPU Cores starts at 37 °C and in about an hour are at 53 °C, with CPU usage under 10%.
The GPU starts at 34 °C and easly goes to 57 °C, with some peaks at 72 °C
    Regarding "Hewlett-Packard 144B": (under low/idle CPU usage)
TZ01: starts at 40 °C and very fast goes to 55 °C or 65 °C (and more, under CPU load)
PCH starts at 59 °C and very fast goes to 76 °C (and stays there)
GMCH: starts at 40 °C and very fast goes to 55 °C or 65 °C
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 (TMPIN0): Starts at 34 °C and easily goes and stays at 57-58 °C
Note: I'm also using a cooler (two fans, under its base)
If I run Real Temp (v. 3.6) "Sensor Test", the cores goes up to 100 °C , and even a bit more.
Which is the normal / expected behavior / operational range?
Steady PCH at 76 °C is it normal?
    TZ01, GMCH at 55 - 65 °C is it normal?
i5 Cores at 55 °C is it normal? (and easily going to 70 °C or more)
GPU (ATI) at 57 °C is it normal?
is it normal to climb up to 100-105 °C under a 5 minutes high CPU usage operation?
    Thanks!

i roll back to bios F.25 which is the older version of bios that support my device but still suffering from same D90 system overheating error.

  • Dell u3014 connected to MBP, now what? (options and settings)

Today I unboxed my new Dell U3014 and connected it to my notebook. At first glance, I'm quite satisfied. No problems as such.
I have a working connection between my MacBook Pro (13", mid-2009, Yosemite) and new Dell u3014. A few specific questions:
How to get started with color calibration?
Should I spend time tweaking other display preferences or monitor menu options?
Can my Mac  drive 2 external Dell monitors daisy-chained DP-to-DP?
I used  the cable from the box that connects the u3014 DP (in) to Mac mini-DP. Mine is a MacBook Pro 13" mid-2012 running Yosemite.
Like others here, I had some difficulty identifying the proper cable and connections.
The connection was a tight fit, and I had to push harder than I really wanted to. (no jokes!)
    Other impressions:
The vast amount of screen is almost too much; I had to set it back a bit on my desk. I'm a software developer, and I can't have too much screen.
Text looks crisp, contrast and brightness are good. Colors seem warm and distinct – much better than my old Dell monitor. This is why I bought an UltraSharp, to reduce eye strain.
Q1: I'm wondering if, in order to get the best possible results (performance, clarity, color) ... Should I read up and fiddle much with monitor options and/or Mac OS X Display preferences? Is there a better guide somewhere? documentation is not Dell's strong suit.
Q2: More specifically, what's the basic process to begin and get the most out of color calibration?
Is all done in ColorSync utility? Do I even need to create a custom profile? (This from a guy who used to work with color geeks, people who debugged PostScript RIPs for a living.)
Q3: Can this MacBook Pro drive a 2nd external monitor?
The u3014 user guide says this about that: (quote)
Connecting the Monitor for DP Multi-Stream Transport (MST) function
To make use of this feature, your PC Graphics Card must be certified to DP1.2 with MST option.
Well that's about as clear as mud. The guide is clearly written for Windows PC users. Thanks a lot, Dell.
I guess I'll just buy a DP-to-DP cable, hook up my older Dell, and see if daisy-chaining works. I suppose this will depend on the graphics card and the monitor.
So, does anyone have some experience they'd like to share?
    Thanks
    Keith

Verme, Welcome to the discussion area!
Since i would be using a pc and mac with the drive, does it have to be fat32 or can it go hfs+?
    It can be either.

  • IPad and iPhone on Dell Precision 6500 USB3 ports: not working

    Hello,
I just got a new laptop (a Dell precision 6500) with 2 USB3 ports. Unfortunately, when I try to connect my iPad or iPhone 4G to these ports, the device will enter a loop of connection/disconnection or simply have a "device not recognized" message.
No other devices connected to these ports have any issue (I tried disk, mouse, keyboard and scanner). When I connect the iPad/iPhone to the "legacy" USB 2.0 or to the USB2/eSATA port, they work just fine.
    Any idea ?

Look like those devices don't like USB 3. Your the first one that I have seen post anything concerning Apple devices and USB 3.

  • Precision T5810 - MDT

Just wanted to know if anyone else has encountered this issue:
Out of the box, the Precision T5810 I received had bios A05. By default, network card is enabled without PXE option). I enabled network with PXE option to image. Once the wim laid down and the computer rebooted, it was not able to connect to the network. It knew there was a network cable, but kept getting a 169.x.x.x IP address. I tried different ports, confirmed that there were available IP's, reset the TCP/IP stack, all to no avail. I finally rebooted the system, went back into the bios config, switched the nic back to enabled without PXE, and then it was able to continue.
I searched for a new bios update, and found A06. This doesn't mention anything about the behavior I encountered, but I also cannot find A05 on the site. I have applied the A06 bios and am testing again to see if the behavior recurs.
I'd be curious to hear if anyone else has seen this behavior.
Update: after applying the A06 bios, the behavior still occurs (lan w/pxe prevents the nic from connecting to the network during MDT task sequence). I have to change it to lan for the TS to continue).

    DTMonroe,
Just another piece of info. If found another thread that discussed some issues with the Intel I217 NIC not loading in WinPE. The suggested workaround was to download the I217 driver directly from Intel - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/18713/Network-Adapter-Driver-for-Windows-7- and load that. I just downloaded the driver and installed it in the 5810 I was using for testing (while it was in the state of not being able to connect due to the pxe option being enabled). After installing the newer driver and disabling/enabling the card, it now works. For the moment, I'm going to add that driver to MDT so it gets installed, but I will be reaching out to Dell about this too!
    Hope this helps!

  • Dell Precision M4400 Windows 8.1 upgrade

I've been trying to upgrade my Dell Precision M4400 laptop to Windows 8.1 for hours now, with no success.
The installation completes, but right after loading the license agreement, the computer crashes with the infamous VIDEO_TDR error.
I had this problem years ago when I upgraded to Windows 7, and again with Windows 8.0. But I've always been able to at least boot to the desktop so I can turn off NVidia's lousy Powermizer "feature". With Windows 8.1, there's just no way for me to get that far. The laptop crashes, reboots, reverts back to Windows 8.0; leaving me annoyed, hopeless, and stuck trying again.
The VIDEO_TDR error has been a problem for several M4400 users for a while now; Dell needs to stop giving us to proverbial middle finger, and do something about it. After all, this was an expensive unit, and still has plenty of life left in it.
While I wait for them to get their act together. does anybody know how I can get Windows 8.1 into safe mode during the install process? (I tried holding shift and striking the F8 key during boot, but it just ignores me and continues the setup process)

I ran into the same issue today when upgrading from Windows 8.0 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro.
Here is how I managed to get through the upgrade successfully, maybe the description helps others:
On the old OS (Windows 8) open Windows Explorer and go to options
Enable all options to see hidden and system files
    Keep Windows Explorer open
Open an elevated command prompt and run the following command:
    bcdedit /set {default} bootmenupolicy legacy
This enables the legacy F8 boot option in case the VGA boot has to be enforced later on in the process
Start the OS upgrade process from the Microsoft Store
When being prompted to restart the computer DO NOT restart
Change to the Windows Explorer Window and find a folder called "$Windows.~BT" which contains the Windows 8.1 setup files
Within that folder navigate to the "DUDownload" folder and find the "DUDriverUpdates": C:\$Windows.~BT\DUDownload\DUDriverUpdates
Within that folder delete the compressed file and the GUID name folder
The contains the latest nVidia driver that causes the blue screen
Complete the restart as requested by the Windows upgrade routine
Windows 8.1 will install with standard VGA support only
Once completed log on and download the "Powermizer" tool from here:
    http://www.box.net/shared/v7jpoateoq
Download the latest Windows 8.1 drivers from the nVidia web site for the 9600M GT card
Install the drivers (I only installed the core drivers and no add on software from offered by the setup)
Run the "Powermizer" tool from an elevated command prompt and disable the power saving optionRestart the machine immediately when suggested by the "Powermizer"
If the machine crashes just restart, log on and run the too again from an elevated command prompt again
If it continues to crash force a "low resolution" boot by hitting F8 at the beginning of the boot phase and run the tool after having booted with the VGA driver
I tested full HD (1080p) video playback in battery and AC mode as well as resuming from sleep without any issues.
Thanks to the ones that posted here I was able to get this issue solved:

    Understated,
Sounds like you are in Canada.
Skip MSI; they have not been getting much of a reputation for solid, reliable, laptops for video editing.
Asus is selling rock-bottom priced laptops if you really need to cut cost to the bone.
My first choice recommendation would be to go with an ADK laptop. They are a audio/video editing centric company that has excellent laptops (Sager / Cleo platform) and excellent support for pretty decent prices on high-spec configurations. Unlike the HP/Dell laptops, their 15.6" 1980x1080 has expansion for multiple drives while retaining your optical bay.
HP and Dell are OK too, but more expensive for fully loaded configurations. Both companies provide a really nice base model, but then charge a lot for adding memory, drives, etc.
Dell provides really decent CPU choices, but you need to go to the "large business" section of their web site to see those CPU choices for the M4700.
If you go HP or Dell, get a newmodeus.com optical bay drive caddy to put a 2nd internal drive in your system. Buy the HP or Dell, then move the HD to the optical bay and buy a large SSD for OS, programs, and scratch/cache.

    Jim

Unfortunately, Solaris kept rebooting (failed to boot) from the restored primary disk (both / & /export/home) even though Grub menu appeared. As a result, I have embarked on the path of upgrading path using the same Solaris 10 Installation Disk (5/09) DVD but failed due to not able to mount / (c0t0d0s0), swap and /export/home (c0t0d0s7).
The source Sun Fire x2200 had two mirrored disks but I am restoring the backups to a single harddisk. Any idea on what step has been missed or that it is not possible to go down this path altogether.
I have tried a number of different reinstallations & restores but have not had much luck still.
    Many thanks,
    Jack
