Dell Studio 1737 sometimes turn on after shut down

Hello,
for about a week now, my laptop (Dell Studio 1737) sometimes turns back on all on its own after I shut it down. I can spot no correlation with anything.
I issue "shutdown -hP now", like I always have, wait for it to shut down, plug it out and sometimes after about half a minute or maybe a minute, it turns back on, lid closed. If I wait for it to turn fully on and shut it down again, it is OK. If I don't realize it's on again, it runs till the battery dies and then suspends and resumes when I open the lid.
I don't even know where to look. Any help, please?

I searched those keywords and read through the results but I don't think it's the same problem. My computer doesn't reboot instead of shutting down. It shuts down alright, it goes through the whole procedure like it always has, all lights go out, the humming stops, it looks as dead as can be, so I close the lid and plug it out, and only after half a minute or minute it suddenly turns back on. In fact, what it looks like is as if it was just playing dead for a moment to make me go away so that it can go back to life and run. Funny, I've just finished reading a book about a necromancer

  • Fan doesn't turn off after shut down on 15" MBP C2D

The fan on my 2-day old MBP C2D stays on even after shut down. The speed of the fan even changes. 3 hours after I shut down the fan was still spinning. I pulled the battery and pressed the power button to reset the SMC. As soon as I put the battery back in the fan immediately started spinning again. I didn't even power it on. When I do power it on the fan stops.
My Macbook Pro is actually noisier when it's off than when it's powered on. Has anyone else encountered this. Hopefully there's an easy fix, I don't want to have to leave it with the Apple Store.

  • MBP won't turn off after shut down

My MacBook Pro with upgrade to Leopard is staying hot after shut down. I am having to remove the battery to make sure, otherwise I have one red hot laptop when I open up my backpack. Is this another Leopard issue?

    Good morning,
No, this isn't an issue I experience with Leopard...
I'd try [Resetting your MacBook Pro System Management Controller (SMC)|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319] and see if that solves your issue.

  • Macbook display sometimes fails to turn on after shut down (2008 2.4Ghz dual core 2 duo - 2GB DDR2 running OSX 10.6.8)

I own a black macbook (early 2008 model) and for the past few months the display has occasionally (although recently more often) failed to turn on when booting. This only happens every one in four times after a full shut down. When I turn on the computer, I hear the hard drive boot and the fans start going, I also get a response in the white light indicator. When this occurs, I then have to press the on/off button to shut the macbook down, then press the button to turn it on again. Sometimes this works on the second try, but other times it takes 3 to 4 times turning it on or turning it off. Initially I thought it was a hard drive issue (and planned to purchase a new hard drive), but after connecting the laptop to an external screen, the desktop shows up (macbook display remains off despite unplugging or replugging external display). Is this a firmware issue? Or potentially a display cable issue? I'm leaning towards firmware since it only happens every 1 in 4 times. All parts in the macbook are original to 2008 and I've never really had any problems before.
I've tried resetting by taking out the battery/pressing the on button.
I also did a clean 7 pass wipe and reinstalled Mac OSX.
Used TechTool Deluxe - found no issues.
Booted computer and pressed D to perform a Mac hardware test - no problems found.
Not sure what to do now...

  • 1st Gen iMac G5 doesn't turn on--after shutting down during sleep

So I bought an IMAC G5 17/1.6/256/80/COMBO when they first came out. Within the first year and a half I had to get two logic boards replaced. Fast foward to about 4 months after Applecare ran out and the machine began shutting down instead of going to sleep. Then, last week--nothing--wouldn't even turn on. So I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it started fine. Two days ago same thing only now it won't turn on at all. So I took off the cover, internal power button doesn't work--tried reseting SMU and still nothing. LED 2 doesn't come on at all, but LED 1 isn't constant, it flickers (don't know if that's normal). So I assume it's either logic board or power supply.
Now, I've read the Repair Extension program about this model, but unfortunately it only goes out three years (curious because that's how long my AppleCare lasted). And I found it odd that after getting it fixed twice it would still have these defective parts. So I called the support line trying to explain the situation. After being on hold for 20 min. the guy came back and said my warranty was up so I couldn't even talk to someone on the phone about the problem. I could get it fixed, but it was going to cost me.
Anyone have any advice? I was going to get another computer later this year (although will probably change my mind about getting another Mac after this experience), and I know fixing this one will be pretty expensive--something I can't afford right now. Does anyone know the rationale behind a) three year cutoff and b) Apple not informing owners that they'd better get it checked out before period runs out. And I guess as a last resort if it winds up being too expensive to fix, anyone know if people buy broken IMACs? Talk about frustration, I didn't even have to go through this type of nonsense when I used Windows.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Why does Airbook sometimes restart itself after shutting down?

My MacBook Air sometimes restarts itself after I shut it down. At first I thought I was carelessly choosing the wrong command, but now I'm clear -- it's the Airbook.  Also -- I had thought this was unrelated, but now I'm not so sure -- it's been forgetting to start up automatically some mornings.  And yesterday at 3:19 pm it informed me that it was getting ready to shut down, "as instructed" (the actual instruction in the Energy Saver is for midnight).

    From: Eustace Mendis
    Sounds like a Broken Drive...
Most of the times this will be solved with a HardDrive Replacement
    although,
    you could try this
Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R).
Keep holding these keys until the Apple icon appears.
This indicates that your Mac is starting up.
After the Recovery System is finished starting up,
you should see a desktop with an OS X menu bar and a "Mac OS X Utilities" window.
After you do this, select Disk Utility and run it.
    On the next screen,
Select the hard drive in the left hand column,
the First Aid tab on the top, and click on Reparid Disk. (bottom left)
When that is done, click on Repair Permissions.
When that is done, quit Disk Utility and restart.

  • MacBook Pro sometimes stays on after shut-down and drains the battery.

Sometimes my MacBook Pro stays on after I shut it down and it drains the battery until it dies. I return home to find it the clocks and everything have to be reset.  It appears to be shut-down after I select that command, but on occasion it will remain on in a semi-on state and i need to force quit it w/ the power button.  It usually shuts down ok, but this happens every once in a while and I have to continually double-check that it's off before leaving it.  Otherwise, I will come back and the battery will be very warm and the machine is running, but not really on.  Any ideas?

Problem solved by my own. But do not how :) magsafe again working and the laptop tooo

  • Mac book air won't turn on after shutting down unexpectedly

I was surfing the internet, when it all of a sudden went black and shut off. No warnings or anything.
The light on the charger no longer lights up. I have tried all the tips on apple website and nothing works.
    Any suggestions?

    Try resetting your SMC.
Resetting the SMC of an Intel-based portable Mac with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: This will not delete any data.
The SMC is responsible for controlling various system functions. None of your data will be deleted by resetting the SMC.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
Release the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
    I hope I helped.

    Hi @suzygf78,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that your display is still after your computer is shutdown?! I am happy to help you with this. It would be best to get the full product number and OS version. Please read the following documents if you need help in finding those.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
Is the display you are describing the built in display or an attached 2nd display?
As a start here are a few documents to start with that may help, but if it is the built in display I admit I am scratching my head a bit as it is a very weird issue.

Please let me know if any of those proved helpful, or post the requested information and we will go from there.

my computer displays grey screen and apple logo for 10 minutes or more during start up and shut down. sometimes it refuses to shut down . this issues started after installing OS lion. what do i do?

I don't think it's exactly an incomplete installation brody, but most likely in-correct permissions somewhere along the line that either happened, or became magnified during the upgrade. Also, it could be corruption as well.
First thing to do, is boot up holding down Shift key to do a safe-boot so we an clean up any corrupted OS caches, after that do another reboot, but go to the Lion recovery, and scan the HD for errors, repair any if you find them, and then try to do a Repair Permissions job.
That should fix the issue, if not, we can start doing a PRAM reset  and SMC for good measure.

My MacBook pro is stuck on white screen after shut down. Now, neither this is turn on nor turn off.

You should be able to turn off your MBP by pressing the power button down continously for about 5-10 sec. When you reboot it you are going to want to enter into a terminal screen. Hopefully the following YouTube video helps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKOX72xNmbo

  • IdeaPad U430 touch turns itself on after shut down

    Hello,
My laptop keeps turning itself on.  If it is NOT plugged in, it reboots itself immediately after shutting down (10 seconds).  If I leave it plugged in, it reboots itself overnight, or if I unplug the charger (while it is turned off).
It is not related to any wake timers (disabled), I even completely reset my computer and wiped all my files - no luck, still occurs.  I tried downloading a new BIOS but it failed to install.  I tried updating other drivers, but most of mine are newer than what is available for download on the support site.
I ran a system scan and there were no corrupt files, no viruses or malware detected (McAfee, Windows Safety Scanner, and Webroot).
I think this is a firmware issue.  I disabled AOAC, and still had the issue.  Could it be a hardware issue?  My PlLenovo is about 7 months old.
Please help!  I'm out of troubleshooting ideas.

Try resetting the system management controller.
Many of us rarely shut the Mac off. We just put it to sleep. It is built to run 24/7

  • Satellite E45t won't start for few hours after shut down

I have a brand new Satellite E45t-4100. After shutting down, I am not able to start the laptop for few hours. Upon pressing the power button, say after 15 minutes, power button LED lights up but nothing is displayed on the screen. I have disabled the sleep mode from power settings as I was facing the similar situation when trying to wake up the laptop from sleep. Although, when restart is chosen, laptop restarts without any trouble.
    Please help.

    Hello,
I have the exact same problem as the OP with an E45t-a4300. Purchased almost a year ago (Oct 30, 2013) from Best Buy. Worked perfectly for about 2 months after purchase and then this problem arose. Started when I'd put the computer to sleep, it wouldn't wake up. The computer would just shut off when I'd go to wake it up. When I'd hit the power button to restart, the fan would briefly spin, power indicator/wifi light turns on, then it shuts down again. I would repeat this cycle- sometimes only a few times, sometimes for almost an hour- before the Toshiba splash screen appeared with the "computer wasn't shut down properly"  and the computer would restart and run the standard diagonostics. However, at first on a cold start or start from hibernation it would start fine but after awhile that stopped, too, and any starting attempt was met by the same non-start/shut down cycle.
This went on for about 3 months with me basically rarely shutting down the machine. I searched forums at the time and found nothing regarding this problem. Then one day in mid-March, the start-up problem miraculously disappeard- it fired right up. It started perfectly fine and worked with no problems whatsoever for 6 months, including waking from sleep and hibernation, until about 2 weeks ago. Now the same problem is back- it won't turn on with multiple start attempts and shuts down when you try to wake from sleep or hibernation- showing the "computer wasn't shut down properly" on the splash screen and going through the test process when if finally does start. Also, I'm now unable to enter the BIOS page on start up when pressing F2.  I also have disabled rapid start, etc after the problem began.
I've owned quite a few laptops over the years (including Toshiba) and work with computer based systems for a living. I REALLY love this laptop a lot (yes, even with 8.1) but this problem is just disheartening. I truly appreciate any help.
    Thanks!!
