Dell U2711 in a Mac Pro - Best Callibration settings?

Hi guys. This is my first Post. This message is to ask if anyone has a really good calibration setting for this monitor DELL U2711. I purchased this monitor 1 month ago and want the best settings to use it in a Macpro 3.1. Im a graphic designer and also use after effects and final cut for motion graphics.
If anyone has good settings to recommend it would be great.
Thanks a lot!!

If you think calibrators are too expensive and if your not using it professionally for mission critical work,
then check out the Huey Pro. Because even a cheap calibrator is better than no calibrator.

Edit. Just realized you'd be using it for Professional use so you'd probably want a higher grade one.
Though I would still recommend it over using ready-made profiles.

  • HT202856 Dell P2715Q for 2013 Mac Pro.

The new Dell P2715Q 4K monitor looks to be a technically compatible monitor for the new Mac Pro.  I see it supports DP 1.2 and MST.
Anyone using this monitor and and vouch for its use.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I just setup a pair of these P2715Q monitors with my 2013 MacPro using the supplied MiniDisplayPort to Displayport cables. The screens look fantastic. The main issue I'm having is after restarting or cold starting the computer. Both monitors appear and only show a blank desktop. No menu bar, no Finder icons, etc.
The only fix so far is to power off one of the monitors - then back on. Then all is fine. I've unchecked the Mission Control thing to allow displays to have separate spaces. On a normal startup - the second monitor is usually just a blank desktop. It's like they are both showing that blank desktop.
You mentioned you were having similar issues. Any other resolution to this?
I ordered a pair of minidisplayport to minidisplayport adaptors to try - incase the rub is with the included cable configuration. I've tried resetting PRAM, NVRAM, etc. - Tried different thunderbolt ports.
Actually  - when trying different thunderbolt ports - things got wonky in that the second monitor stopped being acknowledged by the computer. I kept moving the thunderbolt cable around - then it finally came back on. Not fun.
Another strange issue yesterday was when I sat down to work - both monitors were in sleep mode (computer still running though) - the primary monitor wouldn't activate. Even after a restart. I couldn't even power cycle the monitor with the power button. I ultimately had to pull the power cord on the monitor to get it back. Again... not fun.
One thing to note as well - My primary monitor is Rev 01... the secondary was built 2 months earlier and shows Rev. 00. I'm waiting for them to replace the second monitor. These guys update the firmware and other items and never tell anyone what's changed. But I sure want the most current build.
    Any thoughts? - I'm running 10.10.2.
    Thanks,
    Sam

  • New Mac Pro - Best way to get Windows XP on 2nd Internal Hard Drive?

After 16 years, I'm back to a Mac. I picked up a second hard drive for my Mac Pro that I have not installed yet and would like to solely dedicate this drive to running XP Pro. What is the best way to do this please? Thanks!!!

Hi and welcome to Discussions and also welcome back
for running Windows XP you can use the BootCamp Assistant which is part of OSX Leopard (in the Applications/Utilities Folder).
Print out the Installation Guide found either inside the BC Assistant or from here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ and follow it to the letter.
While maybe not neccessary but advisable, make a backup of your OSX volume.
The BC Assistant gives you the choice to use a secondary harddisk fully for installing Windows (page 7 of the guide).
Make sure that during installation of Windows you re-format the destination with the Windows Installer (page 9+10 of the guide).
Also be aware that with XP you can only use the 32-bit version, since the 64-bit XP version is not supported.
Only with Vista you can use the 64-bit versions, when you have a 2008 or later model of the Mac Pro.
Once you have installed your XP, insert the OSX Leopard DVD while in Windows in order to install the BootCamp Drivers.
And download the appropriate BC Update 2.1 from here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/windows/
Other possibilities to run Windows on a Mac are the Virtualization apps like Parallels, VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox.
    http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/
    http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/
    http://www.virtualbox.org/
And the specialty Crossover Mac http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/
When running Windows on a Mac be sure to use a decent Anti-Virus solution.
    Hope it helps
    Stefan

  • NEW Mac Pro - best configuration

I'm going to purchase the latest top of the line Mac Pro for my FCP and After Effects projects. Can someone suggest what configuration works the best - such as which graphics card and any other add-ons etc. Ideally I'd like to max the RAM but that costs too much. What RAM would suffice FCP and AE workflow?

For the moment, as far as I know, the ONLY benefit of the beefier graphics card in FCP is to speed handling of FxPlug plugins; other plugins, Unlimted RT and the rest of the code base of FCP are not affected by your choice of graphics card (and even with the FxPlug plugins I believe its only those that are coded specifically to leverage the GFX card hardware that will see a boost)
BUT (big but) the development of FCP does seem to be leaning towards increasing utilisation of the GPU, so a powerful graphics card may well be a very good investment
If you plan to use Motion at all then its a no brainer. Motion relies heavily on the GPU, the beefier the better.

  • About to buy a Mac Pro: best Processor speed to get for non-graphics user.

I'm currently running a dual processor 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with 1.5 GHz SDRAM. It's almost four years old.
The time has come to buy myself a Mac Pro; 8-core, I think!
Am I right that I'll experience greater speed if I add memory to 4 GB than if I buy the 3.0 GHz (or even the 3.2 GHz) version?
I don't do a lot of graphics and no games; but I do want speed.
What kind of performance boost will I see with 3.0 (or 3.2) over:
1 - What I have now (2 GHz PPC), and
2 - Over the 2.8 GHz Mac Pro?
    Thanks for anyone else's experiences!

    try and convince you?
i just erased my answer to you after rereading your last post.
not only are you going to use FCP and other demanding apps, but you are starting a business. Thats the clincher, at least would be for me.
it's one thing to settle for more time waiting for the machine to complete tasks, its quite another, when you have one eye on the clock counting the seconds left on this task and that task, because you have 5 clients who all wanted finished product on the same friday afternoon, and can i make it, and whats that beach ball now want, will i lose them as future clients, will they want their money back, and oh, i wish i had gotten the 8-core machine....
don't assume you're business might stay small, one project at a time type thing. One 200 person wedding might have 5 in the planning stages of their own wedding and they'll all take your name down without you knowing it until 5 days before their ceremony and their planned videographer is in the hospital and could you pleeease help us out....
for all we know, you are going to repost in this forum announcing to all of us that you just bought two more macpro 3.2ghz with 32g ram so your two employees can work...

  • Forgot user password, how to reset mac pro to factory settings

    hi guys,
Recently I bought a used mac OS X 10.5, am very new to mac world. i am unable to load any softwares like wireless adapters since I am unable to get the password for the previous user. Also, I would like to reset the computer to factory settings, can I do that? Would you folks help me out!!
    thanks

The Mac Pro has 4 internal drive sleds, no cables, that just pull out and slide back in.
Pull out the original drive and see what else is there.
Buy yourself or use one of your own drives.
HOLD 'C' to boot from a DVD.
Holding OPTION or Alt will show a boot menu of valid boot volumes (can include Windows even). You could boot from Windows CD/DVD and nuke the whole thing.
Before installing, go to UTILITY menu and DISK UTILITY and ERASE the drive (not the subset volume).
Assume you know your way around Mac and OS, yes?
You don't know what was or wasn't, and if you don't own license for software etc that is on the computer, another reason to wipe it clean.
    Start from scratch.
Call AppleCare Customer Support and they can send out discs for fee, insure it is 'legit' (need to give them the serial number from case).

  • New Mac Pro - Best bang for the buck

I'm looking to replace my G5 2.7 with a new MP. I'll be running Logic, Reason, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, video conversion, ...
I'm thinking about either the Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (8 cores) with 8GB ram
    or
One 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” [Add $360.00] with 6GB ram
I know the dual Westmere will be faster but will it be $1k faster and will the software I run support the 2 processors?
    Thanks for any input!!

That test session has been run on many different machines, it has become somewhat of a standard benchmark session for Logic users. For comparison, quad machines at considerably lower clock speed have done 50 tracks when the six core at 3.33 only does 45-47 (another 6 core user tested and confirmed the same result). I'm not sure what he means by "a lot of Logic is single threaded" since Logic can generally use up to eight cores - since he has only tested on one machine and not made any comparisons, he makes some conclusions that aren't correct.

  • Audio upsampling in Quicktime Pro: Best export settings for Final Cut?

I'm using Quicktime Pro to convert audio from 32 kHz to 48 kHz, for use in FCE/FCP. Quicktime gives me several options for export settings. I want to make the conversion lossless, without increasing the size of the audio file too much.
These are the settings I'm using so far:
    Format: Linear PCM
    Channels: Stereo (L R)
    Rate: 48 kHz
Sample Rate Converter Settings: Quality: Best
Linear PCM Settings: Sample size: 16 bits
Are these settings the best choices? Does anyone have experience doing this kind of upsampling?
Here are the other options in Quicktime:
    Format: Linear PCM, A-Law 2:1, IMA 4:1, MACE 3:1, MACE 6:1, QDesign Music 2, Qualcomm PureVoice, and mu-Law 2:1
Channels: 2 Discrete Channels, Mono, Stereo (L R)
Rate: there are other choices, but I know 48 kHz is what I want
    Advanced Settings:
Sample Rate Converter Settings: Faster, Fast, Normal, Better, Best
Linear PCM Settings (when Linear PCM is the format): 8 bit, 16 bit, 24 bit, 32 bit (floating point checked), 32 bit (floating point unchecked).
The file size grows quickly as you increase the Linear PCM bit settings.

You can't create something that is not in the file.
Moving from 32kHz to 48 will only make the file size
larger and can't improve the audio.
Doesn't FCP or FCE import your file at 32. Or does it
change it to 48 after import?
I am aware that increasing the audio from 32 kHz to 48 kHz will not improve the quality of the audio. And yes, Final Cut Pro and Express will both capture and allow you to work witih 32 kHz audio.
I have several hours of video shot with 32 kHz audio settings that I'd prefer to have stored on disk with 48 kHz audio, because (a) some applications like iMovie have demonstrated problems with 32 kHz audio in the past, and (b) the majority of my video is shot with 48 kHz audio, so my 32 kHz video will eventually end up in a 48 kHz project, leaving the upsampling to Final Cut. Yes, I do eventually plan to burn my projects to DVD as well, but this isn't an immediate concern.
The problem with doing the conversion in Final Cut is this: Some of the people knowledgeable about Final Cut Pro and Express recommend doing the upsampling using Quicktime or another application, instead of using Final Cut, because Final Cut may not do as good a job as Quicktime. So my intention is to upsample the audio now in preparation for later projects. I don't completely understand why Final Cut wouldn't do as good of a job at upsampling, but a couple of experienced users in the FCP and FCE forums have independently corroborrated this.
Thanks to everyone for their helpful posts and responsiveness.

  • Strange dual monitor behavior: mac pro + leopard + x1900xt + 2 dell 2001FPs

I recently purchased a mac pro dual quad core with radeon x1900xt graphics card. Updated to 10.5.1. I have a dual monitor setup: 2 Dell 2001FPs connected to the x1900xt with dual-link DVI cables.
    Here's the problem:
I want to use both monitors at their optimal resolution (1600x1200). I can get one monitor to run at 1600x1200 by changing the display preferences, but when I change the secondary monitor to something above 1280x1024, it goes dark, then doesn't come back on (the green light remains on, however). Occasionally while this is happening I will get a message on the black monitor telling me the computer is asleep. It obviously is not since I can see it is awake on the operating screen.
    Here's where it gets weird:
I just found out that if I drag the mouse over into the darkened screen and then click a couple times, the monitor comes alive at the desired 1600x1200 resolution! If I restart from there, I get the primary monitor to come up upon startup, but I have to change the secondary monitor back down to 1280x1024, then back up to 1600x1200, then do the mystery clicking with the mouse!
The problem occurs no matter which monitor is primary and no matter which slot is being used on the graphics card.
To me this sounds like a driver problem, but I'm posting in the Mac Pro forum to see if any others have purchased the same configuration and have similar issues.

It appears I have solved my problem...for the time being.
    1. rechecked all connections, replaced cable on secondary monitor with new (no change in behavior)
    2. reviewed system log and saw this junk:

The message above occurred each time I booted the mac pro and I think also when I changed resolutions on the monitors. This appeared to me to be a call to the specialized Apple Display extensions and preferences, not for non-apple displays.
    Resolution:
I went into /System/Library/MonitorPanels/ and copied the AppleDisplay folder to the desktop and renamed it to XXXX.old. I deleted the AppleDisplay folder from its previous directory (I left behind the Arrange.monitorPanel, Display.monitorPanel, Profile.monitorPanel and VGADisplay.monitorPanel files). I then rebooted. No problems since. I can change resolutions all I want and my secondary monitor kicks right in, never staying black.
Note: this seems to work for me because I am using Dell monitors on the mac pro with the x1900xt graphics card. I wouldn't do this if you have monitor trouble, especially if you have an Apple Display, as it seems these files are important for those.

  • New Mac Pro/Yosemite lost display resolutions that were in Mavericks

After a 9 hour migration process from my old Mac Pro, late 2007 2.8Ghz Dual Quad core, to a new Mac Pro 3.5Ghz 6-Core, I have had issues with the display resolution I used on my old Mac Pro. They don't show up in the list of available resolutions, and now everything on my Dell 30" display is HUGE! How can I get the resolution settings back to where the old Mac Pro was?

In the System Preferences "Display" pane - do you have "Best for display" or "Scaled" selected for the problematic 30" Dell display. Based on your comments I'm guessing it's the "Scaled" option which should show you the list of all resolutions that it knows your graphics board can do. So what graphics board do you have in the new and old Mac Pro? It's listed in the "System Information" app (click on the Apple in the menu bar at the top of the screen, then hold down the Option key and then click on "System Information". The graphics board is listed in the "Graphics/Displays" option about half way down the list of Hardware items on the left of the page. Did you migrate the old graphics board in the older Mac Pro over to the new one or does the new Mac Pro have it's own? What exactly is the list of resolutions that are shown for your new Mac Pro with the Dell 30"?
Also I'm a little confused - on which system is the Dell 30" on now - the old Mac Pro or the new one? Which resolution setting did the Dell on the old Mac Pro used to be set at and what is it now on the new Mac Pro?

  • WHY AFTER EFFECTS STILLS SO SLOW IN THE NEW MAC PRO?

I have the new mac pro with this settings:
    3 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon E5
    64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC
    AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
    Software OS X 10.9.2
And the AE performs slower than in my old mac pro. I have set the preferences as seen on all those tutorials on this site, I have an SSD external disc for cache files, memory and multiprocessing settings correctly...and previews are very very slow, and I can not even render a single comp without waiting 10 minutes. I am very disappointed and frustrated with this situation...
    Am I missing something?

I don't understand why it's even up to the user to figure out what settings are best.  Isn't the application in a vastly superior position to know what its resource constraints are at any given moment?  Instead I have to try rendering a couple of comps, kill the render, fix the render queue since AE STILL doesn't offer a graceful way to quit and resume renders.
I have to say that one of the attributes of AE that consistently disappoints me is multiprocessing and its accompanying memory management policies.  I regularly produce hundreds of network graphics at a go, and I can never reap any benefit from multiprocessing, because AE has to load the entire project into each core, instead of just loading the comps it needs to render at any given time.  Similarly, a project that requires 400 heavily-automated versions (a regular occurrence for some of my Latin America clients, where graphics have to be versioned for multiple feeds and languages) can simply choke AE.  If it could load this stuff into memory on-the-fly (or at least offload some of it when memory gets tight), this wouldn't be a problem, and I sincerely doubt the performance would be worse than it is now.  This is on a previous-gen Mac Pro with 48 GB RAM, so, while not strictly state-of-the-art, it's no slouch.
Heck, even opening some of these projects just to browse their contents is a painful 30-minute process, as AE apparently has to not only load everything into memory before I can even do anything, but, judging by how it hangs for many minutes at  99% on the progress bar, it also seems to be evaluating all the expressions in all the hundreds of comps (presumably so it can render the project thumbnails).  And yes, I've tried splitting the projects up, but this leads to its own complications, particularly when revisions come in a week or two later.
I don't want any of this to sound overly negative, since I know AE has a small team and this sort of stuff isn't trivial to implement.  I do appreciate this application and all it does, particularly for me creatively and professionally.  I just get a bit tired of seeing new releases come every year and this stuff seems to go unaddressed.

  • Mac Pro 3.1 not booting anymore

Circa 12 hours ago, I've made it to first install Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro 3.1, and, using BootCamp, I put Windows 7 64-bit on it and made it my default boot partition. After installing a few simple programs on it (VLC, Firefox) plus a few automatic Windows updates (whereupon it crashed one time which made the update process a bit more difficult), I decided to migrate data from another computer on an external disk to use on my Mac Pro.
Considering it wouldn't take long, I just plugged in the monitor and keyboard + mouse into the other computer without shutting my Mac Pro off. Turned out that it did take a bit longer than I'd expected for the files to get transferred from my other comp to the external disk...8 hours, to be exact.
When I then switched everything (Monitor and keyboard) back and tried to wake Windows 7 on my Mac Pro up from "sleep" aka "standby", I found out that it had obviously crashed and didn't respond. Screen stayed black. So I used the front button on the tower to boot it. Ever since then, the machine just plain refuses to boot up.
When I'm trying to use the Windows partition, the Windows DVD, or the "EPI" option when using the option key, what I'm getting is a screen (white text on black screen, with very nasty green stripes all over the screen) similar to the one giving me the option of "save mode", only that it's telling me that Windows fails to start entirely, and I can choose either "try start Windows again", or run some diagnoses for hardware failures. Trying again will give me the very same screen again. The diagnosis tool looks like the Windows install screen again, with very low resolution and wrong aspect ratio. Diagnosis tool is telling me that it can't solve the problem, which is that it's suddenly missing "hardware support" or "drivers" in order to boot.
Next, it offers me to go back to a previous state of my Windows installation (similar to Time Machine in MacOS), but no matter which one I click, I'm getting the error that it can't reset the system to any of those earlier times as it's getting no access rights. At least I can see there that the last updates made to Windows, next to a few last automatic Windows updates, consist of DirectX9 and Nero 9 (the latter reading on the box "now with Windows 7 support!", but it doesn't say anything about support for 64-bit). If it's not the long sleep state, I wonder if any out of those two could be the culprit.
On the other hand, if I'm using the option key on boot in order to boot into my Snow Leopard partition or boot from my Snow Leopard DVD, all that happens is that the entire machine freezes on that grey BG with the Apple logo and the spinning clock symbol that just freezes right in the middle of its rotations.
So that's what I got now. Windows partition won't boot. Windows DVD won't boot. Snow Leopard partition won't boot. Snow Leopard DVD won't boot. I've tried resetting my SMC, but still the same.
What do I do now? Am I now in possession of a large chunk of newly bought scrap metal?

Great. No change on trying to use Windows partition, Windows install DVD, "EPI" mode (all three resulting in that very primitive Windows diagnosis tool that can't diagnose or fix anything!), *OR* Snow Leopard partition (freezing on white booting background). And when I now try booting from my Snow Leopard install DVD, the error I'm getting now is "Missing operating system"!
*HELP!* How do I reset my Mac Pro to factory settings now, like it was two days ago? All I had to do back then was wait until the white boot-up background came up, then insert my Snow Leopard install DVD, and all was fine!

  • Upgraded to Mac Pro- What should I change in FCP to use all 8 cores?

    Hi
I went from a G5 to a new Mac Pro. What settings should I change to make sure I can take advantage of the speed from the 8 cores and 6 gigs of Ram and new Nvidia graphics card?
    Thanks

There's little to do on that front. FCP will use what it can all by itself. Might look into a virtual cluster though for Compressor. Use the QMaster control panel to set this up... read on it here: http://www.macworld.com/article/49047/2006/01/marcchreateside.html

With these settings you should see "My Photo Stream" in the "Shared > iCloud" section in Aperture on your Mac Pro, but the monthly projects will not import new photos from the stream. If you want monthly projects automatically imported, enable "Automatic Import" in your settings.
Did you not say, that you only want to import the Photo Stream to one of your Macs, if I remember correctly?
