Dell u3014 connected to MBP, now what? (options and settings)

Today I unboxed my new Dell U3014 and connected it to my notebook. At first glance, I'm quite satisfied. No problems as such.
I have a working connection between my MacBook Pro (13", mid-2009, Yosemite) and new Dell u3014. A few specific questions:
How to get started with color calibration?
Should I spend time tweaking other display preferences or monitor menu options?
Can my Mac  drive 2 external Dell monitors daisy-chained DP-to-DP?
I used  the cable from the box that connects the u3014 DP (in) to Mac mini-DP. Mine is a MacBook Pro 13" mid-2012 running Yosemite.
Like others here, I had some difficulty identifying the proper cable and connections.
The connection was a tight fit, and I had to push harder than I really wanted to. (no jokes!)
Other impressions:
The vast amount of screen is almost too much; I had to set it back a bit on my desk. I'm a software developer, and I can't have too much screen.
Text looks crisp, contrast and brightness are good. Colors seem warm and distinct – much better than my old Dell monitor. This is why I bought an UltraSharp, to reduce eye strain.
Q1: I'm wondering if, in order to get the best possible results (performance, clarity, color) ... Should I read up and fiddle much with monitor options and/or Mac OS X Display preferences? Is there a better guide somewhere? documentation is not Dell's strong suit.
Q2: More specifically, what's the basic process to begin and get the most out of color calibration?
Is all done in ColorSync utility? Do I even need to create a custom profile? (This from a guy who used to work with color geeks, people who debugged PostScript RIPs for a living.)
Q3: Can this MacBook Pro drive a 2nd external monitor?
The u3014 user guide says this about that: (quote)
Connecting the Monitor for DP Multi-Stream Transport (MST) function
To make use of this feature, your PC Graphics Card must be certified to DP1.2 with MST option.
Well that's about as clear as mud. The guide is clearly written for Windows PC users. Thanks a lot, Dell.
I guess I'll just buy a DP-to-DP cable, hook up my older Dell, and see if daisy-chaining works. I suppose this will depend on the graphics card and the monitor.
So, does anyone have some experience they'd like to share?
Thanks
Keith

Since i would be using a pc and mac with the drive, does it have to be fat32 or can it go hfs+?
It can be either.

my ipod is disable and told me to connect to itunes now what do i do?

Do as the manual says to do and restore the ipod.
If you are unable to restore, then type "unable to restore" into the search bar at the top of this page by Support and read the resulting help article.

my iPod says it's disabled and to connect to itunes. now what?

Connect in recovery mode to restore, explained in this article: iOS: Unable to update or restore
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.

For a "hard" restart of your iPad just press the home and power button at the same time and hold it for at least 10-15 sec. until it restarts.

  • Where can I find a guide to all the options and settings available via the "about:" pseudo-URL? (Using FF 3.6.8)

When I last used Firefox support, several years ago, I saw mention of a long list of options and settings available, using a kind of local URL, beginning with "about:". I can't find it now. The text "forums" that I saw then seem to have disappeared and been replaced by support for dummies who might be frightened if they saw a page containing more than just a tiny amount of information.
The question is: where can I find this guide, listing all the available options and settings so that I can make my own decisions?

I must have forgotten; it wasn't exactly FF support, but Mozillazine. '''Thank you for the pointer'''. The "long list" I was thinking of was in fact about:config, which is pointed to by that page.
Given all that, I think it should be easier to find Mozillazine from the FireFox support pages.

  • I need more ethernet connections...now what?

I have the internet hooked up to my computer through an ethernet cord. I also was just given a color laser printer that uses an ethernet cord however I only have one ethernet plug on my imac....now what? I would like to run them at the same time and be able to print while I am on the internet.
    Any help is welcomed!

Depends upon whether you want wireless and wired or wired only and how many devices you have that will require a wired connection.
The best router to use with the Mac is Apple's own Airport Extreme Base Station. The current model can support 3 wired Ethernet devices plus it provides 802.11 b/g/n wireless. It is pricey at around $179.00. The AEBS supports Gigabit Ethernet.
Other alternatives I would recommend are D-Link routers. Although D-Link does not provide any Mac support to speak of, their routers work well with Macs and can be completely configured via any web browser. I've had excellent service from their DI-524 model which provides 802.11 b/g wireless support and has 4 wired Ethernet device ports. This particular model does not support Gigabit Ethernet, but D-Link has other models that do.

  • Accidentally restore old profile and have now lost emails and settings; where can I find them?

Whilst trying to save a profile, I accidentally restored an old one. Now I cannot access the emails and settings. Are they stored somewhere, or completely deleted when restoring a profile?

When you replace one file with another, what usually happens when an old profile is restored (especially when the accounts are the same). Then you have replaced your mail with another version. You olny option are your personal backups, Thunderbird does not store any information in "the cloud"

  • What app and settings do I need for using VPN access

Will I find the app I need to install in the App Store and what are the settings for configuring a vpn

Depends. If you are downloading an app dedicated to VPN connectivity, you would need to consult the vendor. To simply connect via VPN natively:
Settings App > General > VPN > Add VPN configuration (and of course turn VPN ON).

  • Ive tried every code i can think of for my phone, but i cant remember my code, now it says connect to itunes, now what am i supposed to be doing?

please help!!!!! i dont want to loose all my data, cant itunes please send it to me?

As user Wjosten previously replied to another user with that problem:
"Then you'll have to force the phone/touch into recovery mode & restore it:
Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still dont see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new."

  • Connecting my MBP to a amplifier and projector to use as music server

    Hi,
I plan on using my MPB as a music server with my hi-def audio system.
I would like to know if the DVI out also supports sound? How can I use my MBP to play all the tunes through the amplifier to my audio setup and also project via my projector so I can surf the net using a BT keyboard and mouse?
The A/V receiver in question is the Denon 3808 and the projector is Panasonic AE-2000.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks.
    Best Regards,
    Aditya

short answer, the DVI out port on your mac doesn't carry any sound data. for that you will have to use the headphone jack with adapters if your amp needs a different type of plug.
if you're really serious about the sound quality, you should consider an external USB box. there are many out there that work well with mac osx. i can't think of any off the top of my head, but a quick google search for "USB external sound mac osx" would bring up a few good results.
    hope this helps, D

  • Options and settings

I just received this thing last night. Setup everything, works fine except for the usb hard drive, that'll apparently take some more work from what i've read. I have a couple of questions though..
    1. I can't see anywhere to disable the ping on the wan side of this router. This is a pretty basic setting and I can't find hide-nor-hair of this option anywhere. Also, when I do a port scan from grc.com on myself, this router is responding on most ports as being closed, instead of not responding at all. Not good, just wondering if there is a setup option i have missed, but so far, functionality good, security bad.
    2. The second question I have is about the usb hard drive attachment. Right now I only have a pc but i'm planning on grabbing a macbook pro in in a couple of months. I've got the usb printer working like a charm, but the hard drive won't work properly. Since i would be using a pc and mac with the drive, does it have to be fat32 or can it go hfs+? I've heard yes and no, so i'm not sure. Right now it is formatted fat32, but the file sizes are restrictive etc. The router sees the drive, but the airport disk utility can't and i'm not sure how to hook to the drive.
Anyways, appreciate any response in the future. To recap, is the a 'better security' switch i'm missing somewhere?? And what's up with the hard drive function?? I have to give Kudos to apple for the setup, very nice product except for a couple of issues..

  • What Apps and Settings to Change to Maximize Battery Life

Hello - I have been reading many threads on different forums on ways to maximize battery life.  Can someone provide a concise listing (such as what settings to change or which apps to install) to maximize the battery? Also didn't the latest update from Verizon say that it would make better use of the battery?
This way we could have all the steps in one place to make reference to.
    Thanks!  Marvin

i'll just give you my setings/options/details, as i believe i get as much out of the battery as i can get. fyi....i use the stock battery that came with the phone.
-i use NO battery saving apps (juice defender, etc). While they may help some, i just don't see the need for them.
-I use no app killer and don't try to "manage" the apps running in the background. i believe they do no good. i know others will disagree.
-my screen timeout is 30 seconds
-my screen display is 35% (i increase it sometimes during the day or outside to see better)
-i leave it on 3g for the most part. i turn on wifi if it's available and i'm going to be using data. i put it on LTE if i'm going to be streaming or downloading large files.
-i don't sync facebook, stock, or news. i sync email every 15 minutes, weather every 3 hours, and google is set to sync (docs, contacts, gmail, and calendar) although i don't know how often it does it? i also syn backup assistant every night.
-i have standalone gps and google location services on all of the time.
-i have the power saver enabled and is set to activate when i get to 15%
i use my device moderately. i hop on facebook, text a bit, make a few calls, download and play podcasts, and browse a bit during the day. i can get through a full day with one full charge on an average day. this entails about 2.5-3 hours of actual use and at least another 12-15 hours of idle time. on a good day i will get 20+ hours of idle time. the more i actually use it, the less idle time i will get. here's a screenshot of yesterday's stats. the "uptime" is the time i actually used the device (calls, apps, texts, etc). the "real uptime" is the amount of time that the device had been turned on since i unplugged it from the charger. i "bump charge" it daily. this is fully charging it (while the phone is on)....then turning it off and plugging it back in again. the light goes back to orange for another 10 minutes, and then goes green. so my phone is turned off every day, for about 10 minutes.
edit: i forgot to mention that i'm in an extremely solid network all day and this will have A LOT to do with your battery life. if your in a poor coverage area, your phone will struggle to get and hold a signal and that will strain the battery....and there's really nothing to do about that, short of moving...lol. but if live in a pretty good network area, then you can get a full day off of one charge (unless you're using it half the time your awake.....in which case no phone is going to help ya out..lol).
    hope this helps.
