Dell vostro soundcard not recognized

I just bought a Dell vostro 1500 and have got (almost) everything working. But I can't get the sound going.. hwd detected some modules which are in rc.conf, but lspci isn't showing a soundcard.. It should be an integrated intel one. I'm a bit out of ideas..
alsamixer returns this:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
and alsaconf doesn't find any soundcards.
I would be really glad if someone could point me in the right direction!

GeForce FX 5200 and Dell 20" 2005FPW - not recognized

I just got a dell monitor figuring that my computer could support it as it's the same as the apple display. It works with my powerbook - recognized by name, but that's an ati card. With the G5, it works in the VGA, but not at the correct resolution. it won't go to 1600 and there is no 1620 X 1050.
When the dvi cable is connected, the self test dissapears, but the monitor just goes to sleep.
I have the 64mb card....maximum res is 1900+. What's the deal? PC users can force the resolution with a utility. Am I stuck buying a new card for my machine??

Don't waste your money. Your GeForce FX 5200 will run your Dell. In fact, I'm writing to you with my Dell 2005FPW monitor, running on my GeForce FX 5200. In this discussion group, I saw a suggestion to zap (reset) the PRAM. It worked for me.
Using the monitor that does work, zap your PRAM. When you zap your PRAM, as the G5 instruction manual says, release the 4 keys after the second chime. Then, you must go in and reselect, thru System Preferences, your Mac HD as the boot-up drive. Your manual says all this. ShutDown.
After I did all that, I reconnected my Dell, started up, & VOILA! Not only that, but when I went into System Preferences->Displays, I saw the Dell's 1680x1050 resolution as the selected resolution, so the GeForce seems to configure itself to anticipated device resolutions.
However, reading other threads in this group in trying to solve my problem, I saw that zapping PRAM doesn't always work. If it doesn't work for you, I suggest you go thru all the threads that seem to apply to your problem, because other considerations (not necessarily solutions) are offered.

Soundcard not recognized with fresh install of Windows XP h

My brother-in-laws computer was having many issues with restarting and after spending a couple weeks trying everything I know to try, I decided just to reformat. Before the reformat, his soundcard was working just fine (Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS). Now since the reformat, fir whatever reason, Windows doesn't recognize the card. Just says multi-media something or another with a yellow exclamation point. I downloaded the latest driver for the card and that as it's starting to install says that it is unable to locate a soundblaster device. The onboard card is disabled through BIOS. I am at a loss for what to do. Any ideas?

I have the same problem with my SB Li've! soundcard. When I try to install the drivers from Li'veDrvUni-Pack(ENG).exe it says that no SB device can be found on my CPU. I don't have my installation CD and my connection speed is too low to download the new one from BadBoy. Can you help?

Dell Vostro 1400 not resuming from pm-hibernate.

For some reason my laptop won't resume after hibernating with pm-hibernate.
I have added the resume hook to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and the swap drive to /boot/grub/menu.lst.
Is s2disk reports no error when creating image file and the hook is run on next boot but it doesn't work.
dmesg output:

Windows 7 is not recognizing my Dell Wireless 5620 EVDO HSPA Mobile Broadband Mini Card (Qualcomm Gobi 2000). I can't even uninstall the driver, it says that I don't have "sufficient permission" to stop device or something to that effect
(though I'm an administrator). I also can't re-install the same or different driver. I might have installed the wrong driver, though this is supposed to be the correct one according to Dell after typing in my service tag. I went to the FTP
to get one specifically for "Verizon Wireless", but I can't uninstall the prior driver.
How can I fix these issues? Thanks.

Have you tried safe mode mentioned in the first reply? What is the status of the driver in device manager? For "Verizon Wireless", have you installed any verizon software or related verizon device? Uninstall this kind software, then uninstll driver again
as a test.
Contact this support, maybe they can give some different ideas.

We have new Dell Vostro 200 and the JMF does not work.

Gee. Tom_Jansen, what a useful response. The audio chipset in the Vostro appears not to be compatible with JMF, a software product that hasn't been updated in several years. The user is looking for some assistance, maybe a firmware update someone knows about or has tested, or a patch to JMF. You have an unfortunate existence if the extent of your knowledge is to post responses like that.

Dell Vostro 1320 - Microphone not working

Hi,
although my sound output works out of the box just fine, I can't get the microphone working. Neither the internal nor any plugged in external microphone works. I know that this is a common problem, and tried all available fixes that are flying around through various forums, but couldn't get it working.
Has anyone another good (working ) idea? As said already I tried the common things (adding various options to the kernel module).

I can confirm this issue on Dell Vostro 1320. The chipset is 'IDT 92HD81B1C5'. There is a bug report [1] on launchpad. It seems the 'Jack Sense' support is not enabled. The report is for alsa v1.0.21. My current version is alsa-lib 1.0.22-1.
The is no mic sound, but there is some noise when I raise the mic volume, so I can conclude is the same 'Jack Sense' issue reported on [1].
I really don't know when, but some update broke it. Maybe it's a regression.

Dell Vostro 1400 laptop will not boot Zen imaging

Got a new Dell Vostro 1400 laptop today to find it has problems with
ZENworks imaging.
I can pxe boot the laptop and it will attempt to install the imaging
software from
the server but fail and present me with the Linuxrc screen.
Navigating through the options results in a DHCP configuration failed
error.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Is there a hotfix available?

I have loaded this driver and added the newid=0x14e4 0x1713 but still
no luck. Still can not ping the Zenworks server or do anything. The
Network lights stay lit when it tries to obtain an IP address for eth0.
I read on another site that you need to update the initrd with the new
tg3.ko driver. I will try this later tonight and see what happens.

You do not move Adobe applications, you install them, so get the installation files and install them like you originally did.

You will also need your serial number to activate the new installation. If you did not keep a record of it you might be able to find it in your Adobe account online if you registered the program.
You are allowed to have two installations activated so if you wish to you can keep the software working on the old machine. If you wish to remove it or disable it, you need to deactivate it (Help -> Deactivate).

IPad not recognized by my Dell computer

My iPad is not being recognized by my laptop. I have used the USB port to try to transfer pictures in my laptop to my iPad but it does not recognized or even show that the iPad is connected to the computer. Additionally, the indicator for charging states "not charging". The iPad had already been replace once for a malfunction but I suspect they (sales/technical individual) failed to recognized that the iPad does not charge with other computers, so my original iPad had been replaced. How do I get this one to "register" with my computer?

The 'not charging' is normal. Very few computers have a powerful enough USB to charge an iPad (technically it does charge, just very, very slowly, triggering the 'not charging' warning)
Like the others have suggested, try different USB ports, if you're using a hub or extender stop and plug it directly into your computer. Uninstall and reinstall iTunes. Then go through those troubleshooting and restore protocols.
SInce computer configurations vary from person to person there's no single quick fix. You just have to try and work your way thorough stuff to get the driver back.

3Gs not recognized, won't charge after use of aftermarket cord

My iPhone 3Gs isn't recognized by my windows laptop (I get the "USB device not recognized" error popup and the device doesn't show in iTunes) and will only charge when it is powered off. I have the latest version of iTunes, and I have tried numerous hard resets.
The same laptop (Dell Vostro running Windows 8) recognizes my wife's 3Gs when I plug it in and immediately wants to sync with it, so the laptop isn't the problem. I am also using the same cable and charger with my wife’s phone, so the cable isn’t the problem, either.
I went into Device Manager on the Control Panel menu and it shows as “unknown device.” I tried to use the “update drivers” command but got a “Windows could not find software for your device” message.
This phone was working fine until I used an aftermarket charger and cable; after that it lost sync and wouldn't charge even after I found my OEM cable/charger and started using it again. The connector pins seem fine because the phone will charge with the OEM charger, just not when the phone is turned on.
The phone is running version 6.1.3 and it is out of warranty.
Any ideas?

In the System Profiler window, select the Power entry & look for Health Information.

I am running XP SP 2, on a Dell Vostro 1000, Palm OS Garnet v5.4.7 on a Tungsten E2. I have worked though issues relating to synchronization, Outlook 2007, Docs to Go, etc., in the past. Thank you board members!
Once I worked thru all the initial problems, my Tungsten E2 was sync' ing beautifully to my laptop until a few days ago. There have been no changes (I know of) to the configuration, but now I receive "The connection between your device and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again." On the laptop I sometimes get "USB device not recognized." I am unclear why I get the PC message sometimes and not others.
I have tried the following: (not necc exactly in this order)
Double checked Hot Sync Mgr settings: Local USB (ver. 6.0.1)
Reset the Palm (multiple times)
Rebooted the laptop (multiple times before and after the Palm resets)

Tried all four USB ports - the PC's bell-like tone does not sound when I disconnect or reconnect the Plam's cradle like it does when I conn/disconnect other USB devices -I think that is a clue. ...?
Cleaned the Palm's contacts (and cradle's contacts with a old, dry toothbrush)
Read all the posts under "USB device not recognized."

Using a cradle with the Tungsten E2? Tried bypassing the cradle and just use the hotsync cable? Tried a different computer yet? Somehow, the PC is having problems getting a signal from the device. I assume you have the laptop charger plugged into the laptop during this? Not going through a docking station or port-replicator.
One crazy thing you can try is unplug the charger from your laptop, remove the battery from the laptop and leave it out for like 10mins and put it back in and reboot the laptop. This should not cause side effects but still contact your OEM to make sure that nothing else is needed after leaving the battery out for extended period of time. Keep me posted.
