Dell XPS 12 bios update stuck. Edit: computer is working, problem with EC

Hi all,
The touch screen stopped responding. On several forums a bios update was suggested.
Tried to update from A06 with the new one A07 from the dell web site.
My model is the 9Q33.
The bios update procedure is stuck in the programming EC stage at 43% for over a day now.
I don't want to unplug the machine and wait for the battery to discharge because it will probably brick out the machine.
Any suggestions?
Edit: Having stuck at 43% I decided to unplug the machine and wait for it to shut down. It run out of power and it turned off. Thankfully the machine was working fine and the bios had been update successfully.
Looking at the event viewer there was an error saying that the EC (embedded controller) has not responded on time or something similar. And it also said that probably the bios does not communicate the EC correctly.
Therefore as far as I can say the EC firmware is not updated correctly.
Is this a problem and what should I do?
P.S. The touch screen worked again after several restarts

I had the exact same problem with the same model computer while attempting to update to BIOS A07 as "recommended" on the Dell support web site..  About 2 hours into the update, my system was reporting 28% complete and appeared totally frozen.  Even the clock had stopped updating in the lower right corner of the screen.
Another 2 hours later, it was at 43%.  Eventually it got to 71% complete, but stayed there without advancing for 10 hours or so.  I called tech support.  They advised me to shut down the computer.  It would not shut down.  So following the step by step direction from tech support on the phone, I removed the bottom panel of the computer and unplugged the internal battery to get the computer to shut down.
When I rebooted, the BIOS screen reported that BIOS version A07 had indeed been installed.  Now, however, my computer hangs every time I attempt to boot from a fully powered down condition.  If I force a shut down and then restart, it starts fine.
Removing the video driver and using the Microsoft generic video driver resolves the problem -- the computer boots just fine.  Unfortunately, I can't run the generic driver because I need to support external monitors...
If anyone out there has BIOS version A07 running on a 9Q33 and has no trouble booting from after a full system shutdown, I'd like to know what version of the video driver you are running.  I have tried several different driver versions without success.
(Also, I might note that I am very grateful to Dell's tech support for walking me through the process of recovering from the stalled BIOS update, even though my system is beyond its warranty.)
EDIT -- PARTIAL SOLUTION (or at least a more complete diagnosis of the problem...)
My computer will boot correctly after shutdown when I disable "Fast Startup" in Windows.  This is frustrating, tho, since fast startup is supposed to be important features of windows 8 (and 8.1, which I am running).
So it seems possible that the current intel video driver on the Dell web site may be incompatible with fast startup after installing BIOS A07 with Windows 8.1.  Either that, or there is some other software on my computer that interacts with the video driver that causes the incompatibility with fast startup.
Again, I make this conclusion based on the following observations:
1) my computer boots just fine after shutdown with "fast startup" enabled if I remove the intel video driver and use the microsoft generic video driver
2) it boots just fine after shutdown with the intel video driver installed, but fast startup disabled.
3) the computer consistently hangs on boot after a shutdown if the video driver is installed and fast startup enbled.
4) the computer boot fine after "restart" (rather than "shutdown") no matter what -- but this is because "restart" circumvents fast startup even when fast startup is enabled!
Here is a link that shows nicely how to disable fast startup in windows.
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-8-a.html
(BTW, my video driver is Intel HD Graphics Family 10.18.10.3574 -- the latest currently available on the dell web site.  I also tried a more recent version -- something like 10.18.10.3910; can't remember exactly -- and had the same problem).
Again, anyone who has BIOS A07 working on a 9Q33 with Windows 8.1 and fast-startup enabled, I'd love to know the version of your video driver.  Thanks!
EDIT #2: PART OF A LARGER PROBLEM
Turns out my computer won't wake from any sort of sleep or hibernate unless the video driver is disabled. Turning off "fast startup" solved my boot problems only because "shutdown" is a form of hibernation when "fast startup" is enabled. Thus, the problem has been waking from hibernation all along...
My problem  is getting far afield from this thread, so I have started a new one.

EDIT #3:  Downgrading to BIOS A06 resolved the problem.  See details in new thread (follow link on line above this one.)

  • Satellite S55 BIOS update to 1.60 has a problem with UEFI keyboard backlight control

I recently updated my BIOS to version 1.60 from 1.50. The update went well. However now the setting for the keyboard backlight control will not hold my setting. I don't wish the backlight to illuminate as it will use up power. When I enter my UEFI and change the setting to "OFF", then save and exit, the keyboard illumination appears to operate as expected. However, following a Windows restart, or shutdown and boot, the UEFI setting resets to "TIMER" with "Backlight Lighting Time" set to 0. If I leave the mode set to "Timer", and set "Backlight Lighting Time" to 10, again the backlight appears to operate properly. But a reboot resets the time to 0. I thought possibly I was not saving and exiting UEFI properly. To test this, I change the setting for the "Internal USB3.0 Controller from "Enable" to "Disable", then also set the backlight control to "OFF", did a save/exit. I found that the USB3.0 remained disabled, but the backlight control again reset to "Timer". The BIOS update was provided by the Toshiba Service Station app as an optional update, so it should be the right one for my laptop. Any help would be appreciated.
My laptop is a Satellite S55-A5295 and is running Windows 8.1 with BIOS 1.60 and EC 1.20.

Thank you for your response. When I purchased the laptop, I also bought a 2-year repair plan with Geek Squad.  I took the device to the tech and it was his opinion that there might be a bug in the BIOS I installed.  I asked if we could retro the BIOS to a previous version and he told me he didn't recommend it as there are always risks when updating the BIOS.  He said it wasn't worth it as the device was stable with no other known issues besides the keyboard lighting.  He recommended I contact Toshiba support to document the problem.  This I did.  However, I was told by Toshiba I was beyond my complimentary support and would have to pay $49 to correct the issue.  I agreed to purchase the support.  The tech had me try various resets including the hardware reset button but to no avail.  At this point the tech informed me that I can always press "Fn-z" to cycle the lights off after boot/restart, and that my support time was ending.  I only hope that the problem is with the BIOS and not with hardware such as BIOS memory, and that a new firmware update will correct the problem. I appreciate this forum and the people that are trying to help others correct their problems.  Please keep up the good work.

I have a Satellite M40X and I had update the Bios to v. 1.60 and now the keys u, m, 7 and the arrow up are not working properly. The problem is that there is not other Bios version to use.
How can I resolve my problem?
Can I recover the old bios version?
    Thanks

    Hi there,
no you wont be able to recover the old BIOS. The only two options are:
    1. Retry the BIOS update and check if its working
    2. In case of no success, please visit the [ASP Locator|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/generic_content.jsp?service=EU&ID=ASP_SUPPORT] to search for the nearest ASP in your country and to ask them for a hardware checkup and repair.

Yes, I had found a similar solution also.  I'm running XP Pro, SP3.  I went Control Panels/ Add-Remove programmes/apple software update/ change/ repair.  Then run the 10.5 exe.
While the programme updated from version 8 of iTunes, my new iTunes is now a mess.  Not all of my music was in the same folder previously but it all showed up on iTunes.  Now many albums have been left out, some have only a few tracks and some have two copies of some tracks as well as having other tracks missing.  I haven't begun to work on that.

Try deleting the account(s) you're having problems with, resetting your phone (hold on/off and home buttons simultaneously 10-15 seconds until Apple logo appears, release buttons and wait for it to restart), then add back your mail accounts.  I've read that this has worked for some.

  • Qosmio F50-10Z - After BIOS update illuminated buttons don't work

Tempro alerted me about a BIOS update - bios-20090415092322.zip - for 32bit Vista, released 15 April 2009, for my F50-10Z.
Since then, the illuminated 'buttons' atop my keyboard no longer work - including, annoyingly, the button to turn off the illumination.
Is there anything I can do at this point? I tried a system restore, but it didn't affect the BIOS.

Hi, and thanks for your reply.
I had previously tried reinstalling the Value Added Pack, to no avail (in fact I lost my special function keys also, which I got back via system restore), but after a bios reset it did the job.
For anybody reading this after the event, to restore BIOS to defaults on a Qosmio f50,
    restart
    hit f2
    hit f9 (then indicate yes)
    hit f10 (indicate yes)
I don't poke around in BIOS myself, having a healthy fear of the unknown, but I guess something had gone askew somewhere.
I also found a little program called dimmer.exe which can actually turn off the lights if they are stuck on. For the record, I had the lights switched off when I reset the BIOS and reinstalled VAP
Thank you both for your assistance.

  • Satellite L300-26K - After BIOS update the touchpad doesn't work anymore

    Hi,
like recommended by tempro, I updated BIOS from ver.2.1 to 2.2 (windows-Version). After rebooting, touchpad incl. tips doesnt work anymore. In bios touchpad is enabled, in system it says unit is working properly. FN/F9 makes no effect. Reinstalling synaptics drivers - no effect - still dead.
    Satellite L300-26K
    Using Vista 32bit home
How can I restore BIOS to 2.1 again? (if i try the windows-bios utility from V2.1 it says it is still installed - so I cannot downgrade by this easy way)
Please help - I need my notebook without external mouse (this works)

    Hi enigmo,
I cant imagine that this happened due the BIOS update. Have you tried reinstalling Windows by using Toshiba recovery disk?
This BIOS downgrade can only be done from an authorized service provider. The technicians can install every version because they have such special tools to make a downgrade.
On the Toshiba website you can find a list of them. Just give the guys and ask for that. They will help you! :)

  • [Athlon64] MSI K8T Neo FIS2R BIOS Update when? CnQ no workie!

    The MSI K8T Neo FIS2R (MS-6702) hasn't had a BIOS update since 3-4-2005!
I put a Sempron 64 3000+ in my motherboard, and was very disappointed that it is recognized as an "AMD Unknown Processor".  Sure, it works, but one of the reasons I bought it is in the hopes of getting AMD Cool n Quiet to work.  However, apparently the AMD driver can't recognize the CPU due to the old BIOS on the motherboard.
Every other MSI skt 754 board supports Sempron E6 revision already.  Why not the K8T Neo FIS2R?  Where have all the MSI BIOS programmers gone?  I have been waiting 2-months for a BIOS update to support the E6 Semprons.  I have asked and begged MSI Tech Support.  I am tempted to switch to ASUS or some other company that is actually timely with BIOS updates.  Only reason I haven't yet, is this board is everything I want EXCEPT for Cool n Quiet not working.  It's starting to look like there is no BIOS update in sight, so I am very disappointed.
Anyone here work for MSI can confirm there are no plans for a BIOS update?  Because I don't want to wait around for something that's not going to happen.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply I thought the mods here are MSI staff... I was just kind of hoping there's MSI staff lurking here, seeing what people think of their products or seeing what people complain about.
No, pretty much C 'n Q is the only reason I'm disappointed, but it was something I was really set on getting to work since this is a server that's up 24/7, but isn't utilized but maybe 4hrs out of a given day.  I could reduce frequency and voltage, but unlike C 'n Q, it won't automatically increase speed and voltage based on demand - which is something I want since although it's a server, I also use it as a regular PC as well.
I've even tried the 2.33 beta BIOS with no change, and even found a 5.52 BIOS in their BIOS testing directory.  I guess that BIOS was for a different kind of 6702, although I had pulled out the peripheral modules with AMI's MMTOOL and they looked the same as the existing BIOS, but that BIOS killed my motherboard so it couldn't have been for a regular 6702.  I had to desolder the BIOS chip with a heat gun, reprogram the old BIOS back on it with an EPROM programmer, and solder in a socket.  I guess that shows my dedication to get C 'n Q working!
