Delving into the murky seas of Colour Correction

Hi,
Recently we went on location and took a series of test footage shots. These shots were from various locations, as well as various times of day. We are aware of the "Before 10am and After 4pm" shooting rule, but, being the curious little chaps we are, we decided to try a range of shots and see what we can achieve in post with colour correction (sorry, I can bring myself to leave out the "u").
I have two main questions that I hope can be answered by someone with more colour correction skills than I have (and I am guessing that includes most of the panel here! )
1) Our project is aimed at the HDTV market, and will hopefully be aired in the UK. Now that I am using colour correction software (SA Color Finesse 3 for now) I notice that there are "Limiters" that can be used to prevent breaching certain broadcast rules. The only choices I have in SACF3 are for NTSC, PAL or ATSC. Does HDTV fall under any of those? Speaking to some of the others, we are under the impression that HD is in a league of its own. I have a specific shot that I am testing with, and when the limiters are enabled, there is very little I can do without breaching some limit or another. There is a terrible blue tint to the shot, and when I adjust the RGB settings for Master, and then Blue channel, the sky breaches the limits almost immediately.
2) The second question is specifically for the shot mentioned above - I will add a screenshot below. I am not sure what was done on location to produce such a terrible blue tint, but it is in fact a brilliant shot for me to test on. I guess that a perfect shot would have been pretty useless as tool to hone my skills on! If I use no limiters on SACF3, I can get the brightness up quite nicely and remove a great deal of the tint, returning the shot to a very pleasant one - on my PC that is - How would I go about doing this, assuming the answer to question 1 is that I need those limiters enabled.
Well, I hope this makes sense, as it sounded good in my head, but Devereux junior has picked up his second cold at 6months, so the little sleep I was getting....has just been halved again!
Thanks guys.
Pierre

Hi Guys,
CFG_2451,
Thank you for the link - I will look into the book first thing in the morning. I have already built up a rather nice After Effects, Filming, Lighting and Green Screening library, I look forward to adding Colour Correction to it. I did assume that I would have to adhere to the PAL standards, but hoped that HD would do away with all the worry - Oh well....
Dave,
Thanks for the tip, I am a big fan of Andrew Devis, and have collected his entire After Effects basics tutorials so far - He has a great way of explaining the tools he uses, and I enjoy his clips. I will check out his Color Finesse tutorials tomorrow while I wait for the book.
Mylenium,
Thanks for the info. I had my previous iMac colour corrected to work under the specific lights we had in the old office, now I am in a new office, and I have a new PC. I hope that the monitor I have for the PC will be ok. We bought a nice large LED HD TV a while back, and the guy who came to do our colour correction explained that it was a bit of a waste, as it has so many "Auto" settings with no real explanation of what they do. As a result, he explained we would never know exactly what was going on, or if the TV was trying its own correction in the background - making what we see, completely different to other screens. I dont think we can get a production monitor at the moment, but Ill get them in to check what they can do with my PC screen. I still use an iMac, but it has the latest OS on, and according to the colour chaps, the software and calibration unit they use is incompatible with it. So unless I want to buy my own calibration units, Ill have to stick to the PC.
Once again, thanks to all so far. thes past few months have been an incredible journey, and withtout the input from the people on this forum, it would have been over ages ago!
(I am going to have to make a special mention of each of you in the shows credits!)

  • Info before delving into the unknown

    I am after some information.
I have a client that currently has an xserve and an Xraid. They have another spare Xserver and I am planing on getting another Promis Riad for them.
The aim is to have an offsite back up which would be linked with a leased line. What I want to achieve is to have the offsite raid backed up to every night and the offsite Xserve kept up to date with the onsite xserve.
Would Xsan provide me with the ability to do this. As far as I can tell I would be able to setup the two Raids as volumes on the network and then be able to run a backup every night such as retrospect which would run a duplicate.
Is this an option with Xsan or should I look for an alternative solution? Would Xsan also be able to keep the two servers in sync as in update any changes to the offsite that are made on the onsite Xserve
    Thanks,
    Alexis

I am also looking for an Xsan mirror solution. An Apple Server & Storage Product Manager stated, "Note that rsync is not the best replication engine for use on top of Xsan. It doesn't do file system preallocation so will fragment the heck out of your Xsan volume." With that said what is the best thing to use for mirroring Xsan volumes? Has anyone tried CCC or Superduper, but don't these use rsync also?

  • Digging into the XFA data from AS in the form guide

So I'm delving into the wonderful and wacky world of making custom layouts for Form Guides in Flex Builder, and I've got a question that hopefully y'all can answer or point me in the right direction.
So I've taken the SampleRepeaterAccordion file from the SDK and I want to modify it so that the 'title' of each accordion pane is drawn from the one of the fields in the pane itself. These values get populated in the initialize event of the subform the repeater is built off of, and the values do not change.
So I see that the title is an Hbox with a label that pulls the name of the panel and adds the index after the name. I've been able to modify that statement to pull the item that the repeater instance is based off of using the currentItem property of the repeater. So I have something like:
    label="{rpt.currentItem.Resource.value}"
(where 'Resource' is the name of the field in the subform that I want to pull the value from).
This puts "[object Object]" into the label of the HBox. I want the value itself, however. I tried .rawValue instead of .value, but that came out blank.
So how should I be going about fishing data from the XFA form in the action script of the form guide? Or am I headed entirely the wrong direction? I didn't see any docs on this sort of thing. If I missed them, I'd appreciate a pointer to them!
    Thanks!

    Hi Templeton,
Did you find any solution for it. Is there any way to tell in form guide that which field on the repeater I want to display in header.
I was also thinking of making it in flex a custom component to do that and also add filtering capabilities. do you know how can we filter records in repeater accordion or grid
Also can you send me your code if you don't mind
    Thanks

  • Question about Colour correction

    Hi there
Just a quick one really, I am starting now to correct colour on a HD footage 720p and have the following options for colour correction setups in front of me: (I know I should consider other setups but have to work with what I have)
    - connect an external Analog 4:3 TV via Firewire of a DV camera
    - connect my DVI output to a HD TV (via HDMI)
    - work on my MBP monitor
Any advice? Any other config that comes to mind.
    The final output is DVD.
    Thanks in advance.
    Hisham

Connect an external Analog 4:3 TV via Firewire of a DV camera
Won't work. That is an SD output option, and you are using HD. Different color space...plus you can't output 720p via firewire thru a DV deck. You can only output DV that way.
connect my DVI output to a HD TV (via HDMI)
That is taking a computer monitor output to a TV...that is NOT a broadcast quality image. But it is better than option 1.
    work on my MBP monitor
Won't look at ALL like what you see on TV.
None of these is ideal. But if these are the ONLY choices I opt for Option 2, DVI to HDTV. It would get you the closest. BUT, it will still look different once you make the DVD. Best to get an HD output device that is designed for this. Matrox MXO2 Mini would be PERFECT. Balance your HDTV to bars via HDMI.

Generally I would not use Facebook for sharing any photos, it compresses the photos substantially, and when you have shadows and dark colours you get visible "bands" where there should be subtle gradients, ie at sunsets and sunrises.
It sounds like you are using two methods to upload to Facebook:
    1. Sharing from within Aperture, which basically syncs Facebook with your Aperture album, so any changes made at either end gets synced, hence the deletions from Albums, although the original file should still be in your library, just removed rom the album. It is like a playlist in iTunes.
    2. Exporting pics and uploading to Facebook from the browser.
I am not sure how method 1 gets compressed, but I know that uploading hi-res jpegs to Facebook using method 2 results in poor quality images.
I wouldn't even bother comparing option 1 or 2, and they will both be poor images once you view them on Facebook, as opposed to viewing uploaded images on proper image sharing / hosting sites.
Your problem is not with Aperture, it is using Facebook for showing your work.
If you export pics form Aperture at high res jpegs or TIFFs your images will be fine.
If you insist to use Facebook as your way to share your work, then your workflow should be this:
    1. Right click images you want to share.
    2. Select Export version.
    3. Export as 100% size and ensure the export settings are set at 100% quality.
    4. Upload this pic into Facebook.
This will get you the best image size and resolution on Facebook.
    See how you go.

Your image history (if I understand you properly) is stored in your catalog file, and nowhere else, and so it is only on a single drive.
Do you mean you have edited photos on multiple drives? This isn't a problem for Lightroom at all, the software doesn't care, and you can leave things just the way they are. But if it bothers you for some reason, you can move the photos to a single drive if you want. In Lightroom select the desired photos or folders (it's easier to do this using Folders) and drag them to the desired drive.
Alternative if you will be moving lots of folders: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders

  • Step-by-step process of grouping Items in Category Sets and more accurately into the correct Category

Honestly, I have never had a customer ask me 'how' do I identify which Items go together in a specific category.  I am thinking I start with the Functional Area (Inv, PO, OM, WM, etc..) attributes, and start the grouping there.  The customer is asking for "best practices" - any input would be appreciated.
I have a fresh install of Oracle Inventory, Purchasing, Order Management, Service - We have 2,000,000 part numbers.
How have you instructed your customers/clients (both Internal and External) in the PROCESS of categorizing all of their Items?
What is the Step-by-step process of grouping those 2MM items into accurate Category Sets and more accurately into the most correct Category.
I would 'assume' it would start with some analysis with all the Items listed with all the item attributes, and start with ECCN (for example) or Item Type grouping. Then...(?)
    Thanks!

No answer to No.1 but I really want to find it out too.
    No.2
If you already know list of the categories & ID you can manually create a list of checkboxes
    <input type="checkbox" name="CAT_Category" value="89081" />
    <input type="checkbox" name="CAT_Category" value="89082" />
    <input type="checkbox" name="CAT_Category" value="89083" />
    something like that should work

  • Acrobat/Indesign does not export correct into the selected output intention (eci_iso_coated_v2_300)

I use the CS6 suite with Acrobat XI at windows platform.
When I want to save a file from InDesign as .pdf with output intention eci_iso_coated_v2_300 the result is a .pdf with more than 300% ink coverage.
I tried to transform the result in Acrobat XI into this standard output intention, but also the result has more than 300 % ink coverage.
What is the reason of this bug?
Before with Acrobat X this worked without problems

    Hi Rob,
I was told the new way to work would be to draw files via Bridge direct into the InDesign file
and I thought automatically the color would not be changed.
my colourmanagement setting in bridge for the whole CS6 was  ECI isocoated_V2_300
The Illustrator file was saved without color profile.
    In this test file I used 3 kinds of black: background of pirate in cmyk 79,34 / 72,78 / 59,38 / 79,88 = ink coverage 291 %
DÜSSELPIRATEN in “black” (if you would convert this in the file with the cmyk button it would be the same ink-percentage as before
    “e.V.” was set to 100 % k
I set the preferences for Acrobat from InDesign CS6 as pdf X4 with profile eci isocoatedV2_300 in three ways:
    no color conversion
    convert to profile
convert to profile keeping existing values
in all tree files the pirates background has 322 % ink coverage instead of 291 %
Why does Acrobat convert “black” in the wrong way?  If I click in Illustrator on the 4c button to convert the “black” into 4c it is 291% ink
Acrobat should come to the same result with all profiles: iso coated V2 and iso coated V2_300
The same happens also by saving as .pdf X3 or .X1
The minimum what I expect is, that Acrobat reduces ink coverage for black to 300 %
I also made test with the new ECI profiles for laminated prints from 2012.
    And with newspaper profiles
In this case the ink coverage comes below 300 %, but only when I choose convert to profile.
And then the 100 % k converts to cmyk, what I don’t want to have with text.
Is there no way to reduce ink coverage below a special percentage without changing Text 100% k
And is there a bug in Acrobat XI with the ECI IsoCoated_V2_300 Profile? For there is no color reduction below 300 % in all conversion settings.
I can’t test this with Acrobat X or IX, for my computers with this software don’t run with CS6 64 bit.
    enclosed you find my files

  • When I drag pdf files into iBooks Author, the background in the pdf file changes into the colour of my book (brown/beige)?

    Hi,
when I drag a pdf file (when working in Preview) into iBooks Author, the background colour in the pdf file changes into the background colour of the book.
This happens not consistently, sometimes the background of the pdf file does not change (and stays white), sometimes it's like the text in the pdf file is 'lifted' of the file, and put on the page in iBooks Author (with a brown/beige background).
All the pdf files are scanned pdf's, nothing comes out of Pages, Word, Excel,...
    Anybody?
    Thanks a lot!
    Wouter

I have the same question (posted here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/25644741#25644741).
I believe this is because the PDFs have transparent backgrounds. As far as I can tell, the only way to fix it is to export the PDF as another file, such as an image file. Or perhaps convert it to Word and import it that way.

    SOLUTION
Open "terminal" on your mac and type the following:
    defaults write com.apple.mail IgnoreSortOrderWhenSelectingAfterDelete 1
(copy and past the whole line)
This will stop that behaviour in mail.
It works on most opperating systems.
