Demanding more human-oriented PDF metadata!

I am trying to write a plugin for PDF reader where an user, most likely a scholar, can select some text and have a bibliography automatically made ready by the plugin. It saves lots of time for scholars and university students doing research projects. To do that, a PDF file needs to store information about the author, the publisher, publish date information. I checked out PDF standard metadata, and they don't have what I need. What come the closest is creator, producer, but they are the programs that generate the PDF, not the publisher. I want to say that in the case where academic writers choose to publish their writing in PDF, can't they embed publisher, author, and so on information into the PDF file? To me, doing so makes lots of sense, as more and more academic articles are published in PDF format, and the PDF format should catch up with that!

You have two choices.
1) You can use custom Acrobat-centric metadata which centers around the use of the key/values pairs in the /Info dictionary.
2) Use the more modern XML-based metadata system called XMP which is referenced from the /Metadata key in the /Catalog dictionary.

  • How to export PDF metadata

    Hi,
    Is there a simple way to extract the PDF metadata ("Title", "Subject", "Author", "Keywords", etc.) from several PDF (no more than 3000 in my case) into a file that could be opened in Excel or Calc ?
    I'm using Acrobat XI Pro but I can also use another 3rd party program provided it is free ;-).
    My goal is to check the homogeneity of the metadata of a collection of electronic thesis.
    Next step could involve batch correction of metadata. I'd be interested to know if Acrobat Pro can handle that too.
    Thank you for your help !
    JHM

    Accessing the doc.info object is simple enough in a batch script (an Action in Acrobat X and later). The tricky part is in storing the results, as Acrobat doesn't like you writing to generic files on disc.
    I've attached a JS file that you run inside an Action. It creates a new blank document, which has an attachment containing the data as a tab-delimited list. Note that if you run the Action repeatedly without closing the blank document, it'll keep adding to the list.
    To use it, create a new Action, set the source files to "Ask when Action is Started" and "Don't Save Changes", add a JavaScript step from the More Tools panel, and paste in the contents of the JS file.
    You don't say what version of Acrobat you're using, so I can't post a pre-made SEQU file.

    Since downloading iOS on my new iPad, I cannot downlaod more than one pdf from mail into iBooks.  I have to shut down my iPad and restart it to save a second pdf. Wasn't a problem with the old operating system.  Any suggestions?

    It seems that I have solved my issue by performing a full factory reset (erasing all content, something which I had hoped to avoid) restoring from an iCloud backup did not alleviate the issue, I had to set up as a new iPad.
    Hopefully anyone else else who has this issue in the future will be able to find this.

    I don't have an answer, but it may help if you post more imformation

  • How do i add more than one pdf at a time to profile manager books

    How do I add more than one pdf at a time to profile manager books? When I browse to my pdf folder I can only select one pdf at a time. I have 500+ pdf files I need to add. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    no, there is no way to do that, sorry. you need to control-click on every email address one at a time and select "add to address book". if an email is in the address book already that option will not be there.

  • Reader X shuts down when trying to open more than one pdf, or when clicking certain categories in settings

    Until a few weeks ago I have never had a problem opening more than one pdf at a time. Now Reader just shuts down when I try to do so. The same thing happens when I click on the yellow highlighted categories in settings. All the other categories open fine.
    Appreciate the help of anyone who can help me solve this.

    I guess you didn't know, but yes you can close more than one app at a time. You can close up to 3 apps at a time in the new IOS7 on the iPhone. Try opening at least 3 apps and then double click the main button to see what apps are opened. Then swipe to the left to see the three of them on your screen. Your not gonna see the ones on the side entirely but you can still put all three fingers on them, then simply swipe them up and it closes them up.
    The thing is, when you have let say 10 apps open, and you start using this trick, some of them will stay open meaning you swiped them up to close them down but the bottom icon stays there. When you come back to your main IOS desktop and then go back to close the programs that you have opened, you can see that those apps are still opened. There is only like 2 or three out of all the 10 you had opened that stayed open, but none the less it's a bug in the system I presume.
    You also asked about the icon at the bottom. When you are seeing what apps are opened, there is always a small icon at the bottom and on top you have a representation of what you were working on, and that is the part you swipe up. But often time the bottom icon will stay opened after swiping 2 or 3 of the apps to close them.

  • Editing pdf metadata

    is there a practical guide on how to edit pdf metadata in acrobat X pro? last time i checked there was some issue with this and i need to do this.
    i have pdf's that i created and would like to put them out in the world with some identifying information.
    if this is not possible in acrobat or if there is a good tutorial or instructions somewhere would someone be kind enough to help me find out?
    THANKS

    hi. sorry i wasn't clear.
    if i go to File > Document Properties > Description i see about five tabs and i would like to read up on these to make sure i understand them. on the bottom left of each is a HELP icon that seems to take me to an online help document and on the top right it seems to let me download a pdf help document.
    i can't figure out how to print the information in the online help document (the one that first comes up) and when i go to the downloadable pdf i can't figure out how to search for the topic that the HELP icon shows me...
    i really want to just print the information that first comes up but even my Snagit screencapture sofware can't capture it so i would have to do a series of scrolled screenshots which is a real pain.
    TIA

  • Exploring and editing pdf metadata

    Adobe FOrm
    Looking for either an Adobe or third party solution such that I can explore and edit my pdf metadata.  I have hundreds of technical and journal documents 9somewhat organized).  But search for a particular article can be a daunting experience.  I've seen a number of third party application which will allow me to visually explore my pdfs files but was wondering if there is an Adobe solution or a recommended third party solution some of you might use.

    Adobe Bridge can edit/search/display the XMP metadata in lots of different file types, but it's only available as part of a collection (e.g. a Creative Cloud subscription).

  • Calling AVDocClose with more than one PDF open crashes Acrobat

    That pretty much sums it up. If I have a single PDF open and I call AVDocClose everything works great. If I have more than one PDF open it crashes Acrobat and takes down all of the open documents. Any ideas as to what might be happening and how to get around it? I'm seeing it in both Acrobat 8 and Acrobat 9.

    Okay, that sounds ike it could be something to look at. I'm certainly not an expert in using the SDK so maybe you can help me identify the potential issue. This is the code I'm using with some comments to help you understand what I'm doing. I just added the ASFileSysReleasePath references after reading your post but apparently I'm still missing something. The issue occurs in the code path where I'm working with local documents.
    ACCB1 void ACCB2 MyPluginCommand_Save(void *clientData)
    initializeVariables();
    if(myAVDoc==NULL)
    // if no doc is loaded, display a message.
    AVAlertNote("There is no PDF document loaded in Acrobat.");
    else
    //Here are a couple of functions that are just used to set up some file paths for both windows and acrobat
    string docName = getDocName();
    string path = buildAcroPath(docName);
    ASPathName upPath = ASFileSysCreatePathFromCString(NULL,path.c_str());
    //call doc exists to see if we have a local doc or one that is in control of my DMS - doesn't use any Acrobat SDK functions
    bool ndExists = ndDocExists(filename);
    if(!ndExists) //if the file is not from the DMS
    //save this file to a temporary location - this is what actually gets sent to the DMS
    PDDocSave(pdDoc, PDSaveFull | PDSaveCopy | PDSaveCollectGarbage , upPath, ASGetDefaultFileSys(), NULL, NULL);
    //send the document to the DMS and get the status of the operation back - doesn't use any Acrobat SDK functions
    int ndStatus = ndImport(path);
    checkNDStatus(ndStatus);
    else
    //This is a document from the DMS. Just do a regular file save
    PDDocSave(pdDoc, PDSaveFull | PDSaveCollectGarbage , pathName, ASGetDefaultFileSys(), NULL, NULL);
    ASFileSysReleasePath(ASGetDefaultFileSys(), upPath);
    ASFileSysReleasePath(ASGetDefaultFileSys(), pathName);
    AVDocClose(myAVDoc, false);
    return;

  • Hyper-V, Dynamic Memory, Memory Demand more than Maximum memory

    Hi,
    I have found that for some VMs Demand Memory more that Maximum Memory set.
    Where can I found any documentation about this?

    A VM can 'demand' more memory than is possible'
    But it will never actually be given more then the maximum.
    In the VM the application is asking for more RAM from the virtual memory manager of the OS in the VM (not to be confused with any memory management that the hypervisor is doing).
    When the VM hits its Maximum setting it is no different than a physical machine hitting its physical RAM cap - the OS begins paging to give the application the additional RAM it is asking for.
    It simply means that you have a greedy application.  SQL and the Exchange mailbox role have a long history of being very greedy applications (SQL made many changes to work in concert with dynamic memory) - taking all of the RAM they could get.
    In your case, you have a startup of 32GB a minimum of 24GB and a Maximum of 36GB.  And the application in the VM would 'like' to have 54GB.  If you look in your VM OS you will probably find that it is paging to disk.
    What is your allocation setting?  The default of 20%  Higher?
    Personally - I see little value in using dynamic memory with such a small window of difference between the startup, minimum, and maximum.  It is as if you are trying to micro manage the feature, instead of allowing the feature to work as designed.
    Dynamic memory is designed to balance RAM between all of the VMs on a particular hypervisor at the same time.  And to allow use of all the RAM the machine has, if there is a workload that can use it.  If the VM wants 64GB, why not give it that.
    Dynamic memory will not starve other VMs to give this VM more RAM (unless you give this VM a higher priority).  But it will take RAM away from a VM (if absolutely necessary) to allow another VM to meet its requirements.
    Any VM is always guaranteed its startup, at boot time.  And dynamic memory will not starve it below it minimum - and if the VM is not using RAM it will take RAM away down to the minimum.  And a VM will never be given more than the maximum, even
    if the VM wants more.

  • Add/Update/Delete XMP (PDF) metadata?

    I'm new to working with PDF. What I would like to do is add/update/delete XMP metadata to PDF documents. These documents will be indexed by our search engine, which I'm told can index this metadata. It's indexing Dublin Core so don't see why it could not index custom schema. Anyway, I've been researching this and as a non-programmer I'm confused.
    1) Can PDF metadata be added, updated and deleted?
    2) Can this be done via a template? (ie. get the PDF file, fill out a metadata form, and submit it or in the case of update/delete change or remove the data).
    3) Are there any developed applications (client or server based) that can do this or must they be developed? If they exist please tell me what and where they are ...
    4) Has anyone used the Java XMP parser?
    5) Anyone know of any online demos of adding/updating/deleting PDF XMP metadata?
    6) Can XML or XMP data be imported into a PDF file?
    Any help will be very much appreciated.
    Thank you

    1) Can PDF metadata be added, updated and deleted?
    PDF metadata is tricky - it consists of legacy doc info within the PDF structure and newer XMP metadata - Adobe is making the transition to supporting XMP across all its applications but we have to ensure not to break older workflows.
    Additionally, PDFs have the property of storing successive edits - meaning, changes are stored as add ons on top of the orginal when Saved - they are cleaned up when the PDF is Save As-ed.
    This has the added implication that XMP packets are duplicated - so scanning for the XMP maker will bring up multiple 'hits' even if one object is there. I've believe there are some heuristics that can be applied to find the 'right' packet using mod dates.
    In most cases it helps to have the PDFL to assist in the process.
    2) Can this be done via a template? (ie. get the PDF file, fill out a metadata form, and submit it or in the case of update/delete change or remove the data).
    Yes, within the application - under Advanced > Document Metadata...
    Outside of the application you will need to build your own workflow.
    3) Are there any developed applications (client or server based) that can do this or must they be developed? If they exist please tell me what and where they are ...
    PDF can be updated very easily using the Photoshop CS File Browser - multiple files can be selected and metadata templates applied. Additionally the File Info dialog in the File Browser can be customized - adobe.com/xmp for docs.
    Also, check out poundhill.com - they have plugins for customization and integration with FileMaker, AppleScript & PHP
    4) Has anyone used the Java XMP parser?
    I'd like to know the answer to this too!
    Check out:
    http://www.java-channel.org/query.jsp?cids=c_10807
    Looks like some there are XMP and PDF related java code.
    5) Anyone know of any online demos of adding/updating/deleting PDF XMP metadata?
    What would you like to see? Using the Acrobat application or from a developer perspective?
    6) Can XML or XMP data be imported into a PDF file?
    What were you looking to do? Again, this can be done using templates and the PS CS File Browser.
    Pound Hill may be able to provide the connectors that you could piece together.

    Hello:
    As a test, been trying to get my DVD SP 2 project to open a pdf (in Apple DVD player before I burn) and I can't even get it to do this...but ultimately, I would like to have about 6 different folders containing maybe 14 total pdfs to be accessible to a viewer - can this be done and would I need to create a menu per folder or even per pdf? What is a "mention". Haven't heard that one before.
