Demo ESW Switches?

How can partners obtain an equipment demo of the following gear:
·         Cisco Small Business Managed Switch - 48ports - Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, 10Base-T, 100Base-TX + 2x10/100/1000Base-T + 2xSFP - 1u - rack-mountable - stackable
·         Cisco Small Business Pro ESW-520-48 - Switch - 48 ports - Ethernet, Fast Ethernet - 10Base-T, 100Base-TX + 2x10/100/1000Base-T/SFP (mini-GBIC) - external
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

Good afternoon,
Reach out to your sales rep ... they might be able to assist.  Also, you can get some NFR gear in case you want to lab and or use for your own company's network.
Do you have any question concerning these switches and what they can and can't do?  Which installs work best etc ...
Ask away, some smart folk on this community ;-)

  • ESW Switches and Smartports

    Hi All,
Just going through the ESW switches, and it looks like their is no option for 'Server' on these switches (I have noted this on the 2960G's as well).
Is this a shortcoming of CCA, or has this been excluded on purpose.  I know that for the 520 and 500 switches it was there.
    Thanks!
    Chris

    John,
I do understand that you can use a server in a non server port... but based on the macro below:
    Macro name : cisco-desktop
    Macro type : default interface
    # macro keywords $access_vlan
    # desktop port role
    switchport mode access
    switchport port-security maximum 1
    no macro description
    macro description cisco-desktop
    queue-set 2
    service-policy input general-map
    srr-queue bandwidth share  5  5 40 50
    switchport access vlan $access_vlan
    switchport port-security
    switchport port-security violation restrict
    switchport port-security aging time 2
    switchport port-security aging type inactivity
    spanning-tree portfast
    storm-control broadcast level 10.0
    cdp enable
    spanning-tree bpduguard enable
    And then this macro:
    Macro name : cisco-server-critical
    Macro type : default interface
    # macro keywords $access_vlan
    # server port role critical
    switchport mode access
    switchport port-security maximum 1
    no macro description
    macro description cisco-server-critical
    queue-set 1
    service-policy input critical-server-map
    srr-queue bandwidth share  5  5 70 20
    switchport access vlan $access_vlan
    switchport port-security
    switchport port-security violation restrict
    switchport port-security aging time 2
    switchport port-security aging type inactivity
    spanning-tree portfast
    storm-control broadcast level 10.0
    cdp enable
    spanning-tree bpduguard enable
It doesn't set the qos the same ways.  I assume we would have a noticable difference in speed to the server, and since the esw's are not ios, I dont' see there is anyway to set these manually.
Now I do realize that these switches are base switches, but in my opinion we are penalizing SMB with substandard options.  I got these macro definitions from my CE520-24PC.
    Thanks!

  • ESW Switch Management - KPIs

I am looking for list of SNMP traps, Syslog messages (OIDs) recommended for Fault and performance monitoring of ESW switches.
It will great if you can help me on this.

Two approaches are two different kind of design. One is L2 VLAN separated the segment and one is L2 w/ individual NM segment.
What I suggest is to combine both designs that use separated VLAN w/ loopback address that dedicated for the NM traffic. The reason is at L2, it can separated the NM traffic from the production traffic, and for L3, you easily to observe the NM host by different subnet of the loopback address.
However, if there is WAN link that cannot carry VLAN traffic, then you have to use second approach in the WAN link.
And, if it is a L2 switch only, then you have to create a NM VLAN and assoicate the loopback address to this VLAN for NM.
Pease feel free to comment and discuss.
    Hope this help.

  • ESW Switches

    Cisco Guys,
Here are a few things things / suggestions on these switches...
    1) ESW 540 8P - it would be great if you could make the form factor bigger to have an internal power supply.
    2) CCA 2.2.1 - Doesn't have all the port roles in for the ESW switches
    3) VLAN's are less desirable to setup through the web interface (see point 2)
    4) Port numbering... Can we look at setup of the port numbers to be the same as the non ESW switches.  For example have the ports not 1,2,3,4 but 1,3,5,7.  Consistency is king.
I think these will be a nice step past the linksys heritage.
    Thanks Guys!

    Hi Chris
I will forward the feedback to the product manager (PM).
i really like the idea of internal power supply for the ESW540-8P, especially if it is going to be rack mounted.
Good luck on the port re-numbering
but I'll pass it onto the PM.
I believe the next version of CCA is due out this month, will have the expanded smartport roles, but i guess you got around that today via the ESW GUI.
    regards Dave

  • 48-Port 1Gb PoE ESW Switch?

I was looking at the ESW switches and noticed there is no 48-Port, Gig, PoE model.
The closests I found was 48-Port, Gig model (ESW-540-48-K9), no PoE.
I was wondering if there are any plans to make such a model.
    It would probaly be: ESW-540-48P-K9

It depends on what you're looking for. ESW is designed and optimized for a solution deployment, where a mixture of UC500, SA500, AP541, etc products are being deployed. In this context they all work better together allowing for discovery, management, and simplified deployment of these products as a unit. The switch supports CDP and Smartports and integrates into the CCA network management tools. One other piece - ESW comes with next business day replacement (in select markets) as part of the warranty. Some customers value this as a "step up".
The SFE/SGE switches by contrast do not have this solution "glue", but instead has support for other advanced capabilities not present in ESW. For example, it delivers support for Stacking, IPv6, MVR, Static L3, etc. It is also lower in price. Some customers may value this as a "step up".
Cisco has the broadest portfolio to address the needs of very diverse customer base.
We will take your suggestion of adding 48 Gig POE into the ESW product line as a potential product enhancement and discuss internally, so I appreciate your feedback.

  • ESW switches - SFP enquiry

    Hi
Apparently Cisco Small Business has come up with their own SFP(Mini-gbic) transceiver.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9934/prod_models_comparison.html
Id like to know if the Cisco's version of GLC-SX-MM( SFP LC connector, SX transceiver) can be used instead of the MGBSX1
Is it compatible? It seems to look exactly the same, just with different part number
    Plz advise

Performance numbers are pretty much wire rate based on industry standard tests. Check table 1 at link below
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps10143/data_sheet_c78-521740.pdf
Not sure what you mean by normal SFP - for compatible SFPs check table 2 at the data sheet above. The ESW 500 switch does support Etherchannel (LAG) - check chapter 18 on admin guide (Pg 397)

  • Shared office Vlan setup on ESW switches

    Hi,
I wonder if you can give me a bit of a sanity check on the following design for a shared office. We are somewhat restricted by the buildings cabling, the actual design is a bit larger.
What we require is all IP phones (not Cisco) to be able to talk to each other and Company A's server, Company A's server and PCs to be able to communicate together and Company B's Router and the network behind it to be able to access a shared printer and the internet. Anything without a Cisco part no next to it isn't cisco and must be assumed to be dumb.
I'm not after a detailed howto - I just want to check that in theory this is possible, I'll work bench the equipment if it will work.
    Thanks,
    Adam

    Hello and good afternoon,
You have the phones in the same VLAN, vlan 3. This is good.
You have company B's router, the printer and server in the same vlan, vlan 5.
You have company A's PCs, the server, and the 'router' to the Internet in the same vlan, vlan 1. The server appears in multiple vlans ... will it have multiple interface cards or dot.1q trunking?
    Do I have this right?
I think this is fine overall, and do please let me ask a few questions to make sure I understand your approach and design.
Company B's router will perform security to restrict company A's PCs from access it.  This router can actually run a firewall and then protect this second company.  Shared resources like the server and printer's specific IP addresses will be allowed into company B's network; you will need to make sure you allow bi-directional access.
Company A's PCs can access the printer in vlan 5 by being routed there by the Internet router; inter-vlan routing.  Security on this router will keep company B's network from accessing company A's PCs / network.
I suppose you will employ some security on the router for the printer and server so that only Company A and B can access the these shared devices.  Unless you plan on open access to these shared resources and then just simple inter-vlan routing is needed.
All in all I do not see any problems with this, the switches can perform vlans and trunking just fine.
Having an internal firewall and or a second router for a second company is not that rare (it's a good idea) and it does well to 'hide' or protect the second company.
You will likely need to spend a little extra time in the lab to make sure you have all the configs right ... and I can imagine this getting confusing when you are configuring the Internet router.
Do please respond with any follow up questions and or comments.  Many thanks
    Andrew Lissitz

  • Scripted backup of ESW series switches

We recently purchased some of the ESW-540 Cisco switches for some lower end access ports.  I'd like to script the configuration backup using Kiwicat if possible, but haven't figured out how to either get into the cli, or config kiwicat to backup via webui.
With the SRW Linksys line you could hit ctrl-z and type lcli to get into the cli interface.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks..

Nothing to do with the UC - primary concern is standalone networks.
    Real life case:
2 ESW switches in control room hooked up to SA540
    Closet switches are SRW2008's
Port no more than two devices are supposed to go now has 4, add an SRW2008 to the desk location.
Now, it turns out that there is a badly behaved device at the desk - a video player that spews all sorts of traffic when it's playing that doesn't play nice with others.  So I now need to set-up a VLAN crossing those two switches. Oh, and it turns out the customer decided to unplug an access point and plug it into that switch too which ended up causing a loop when the PC plugged into ethernet someplace else attached to the PC.
    Tasks:
Ensure that the 2 SRW2008's have proper vlan assignments to setup a port vlan for that video server.
    Issues:
Make sure you assign proper configs to both ends of each link
Make sure not to confuse one SRW2008 with another
If new vlan, make sure all other ports that need to see it can still see it.
    Applications for CCA:
    Visualize all VLANS
Document port assignments (i.e. where is the video server vs. printer on that last leg 2008)
More easily see port statistics across multiple switches
So after I did that work, I realized that the SA540 wasn't really up to being an aggregation switch too and made the ESW-540-48 into the aggregation switch which required some more changes - however CCA made it easy...
At another job, I have SA540 + AP541ns (upgraded from RVL200 + WAP54GP's) but if I had 300 series in CCA, I'd upgrade the SRW2024's and SRW2008's but without easy management tools, the labor cost will be too high to make their networks really managed.....CCA makes that layer of management cheaper.

  • ESW 520 24-Port switch with POE not working???

We just purchased 8 managed switches POE to swap out our existing in preparation for our new phone system.  We installed them all after configuring with static IP.  Deployed... and all but two work fine.  Can someone assist with tips for troubleshooting why two of them do not work?  There are a couple other switches in the building.   Could it be that a switch "upstream" from the two non-functioning switches is causing an issue?  If so, how do I find out?  When we put back the two "dumb" switches all was fine.  Any tips to help would be much appreciated.

    Hi Rachel,
Thank you for posting. You may need to change the Smartport role of the ESW switch port to match what you are connecting to. If you are connecting to another switch, the role should be switch. This is usually what causes the ports to block traffic.

  • ESW 520 24port PoE Switch Crashes

  • VLAN with 2 switch ESW - 520

For test I used 2 Switch that name "ESW X" and "ESW Y"
    I have 2 network that I named "Network A" and "Network B"
I build 2 VLAN for each network that named Vlan 2 for Network A and Vlan 3 for Network B, I don't use Vlan 1 because it's the default Vlan
    Configuration ESW X:
port e1 : ACCESS PORT on UNTTAGGED Vlan 2
port e2 : ACCESS PORT on UNTTAGGED Vlan 2
port e3 : ACCESS PORT on UNTTAGGED Vlan 3
port e4 : ACCESS PORT on UNTTAGGED Vlan 3
port g3 : TRUNK PORT with UNTTAGGED Vlan 1(default) and TAGGED Vlan 2 and Vlan 3
    Configuration ESW Y:
port e1 : ACCESS PORT on UNTTAGGED Vlan 2
port e2 : ACCESS PORT on UNTTAGGED Vlan 2
port e3 : ACCESS PORT on UNTTAGGED Vlan 3
port e4 : ACCESS PORT on UNTTAGGED Vlan 3
port g3 : TRUNK PORT with UNTTAGGED Vlan 1(default) and TAGGED Vlan 2 and Vlan 3
I Use for test 2 computer with the same IP class adress.

Each Vlan can't communicate between the two switch, I think they're a problem in my vlan/port configuration, can you help me.

    Hi Thibaud,
Thank you for the purchase of the ESW switches.
Just out of interest, are you using the latest  firmware on your ESW switch version 2.1.19
But you sure sound like you have a great understanding of Tagged and untagged VLANs  from you posting description..great stuff.
I just tried your configuration, I can communicate between ESW540-24P switch and a SF300-48P switch.
Sorry,  I don't have two ESW switches handy. But it should not matter. Standards based  Ethernet is hopefully just standards based ethernet
My vlan configuration below for my ESW540-24P,  and it's working just fine.
I  just connected switch ports 24 between the two switches together, that's why port 24 is tagged in each of the screen shots below.
I would really really doubt you would have a problem, unless there is something fundimental or basic you have done such as not saving the running configuration to the startup configuration.  Obviously not backing up tjhe configuration before a power down will kill the configuration.
( saved your configuration within each switch)
Here is a copy of a section of my switch running  configuration, that resulted from me playing with the ESW configuration utility.
(note that my switch has all Gigabit ethernet ports;)
    interface range ethernet g(1-2)
    switchport trunk native vlan 2
    exit
    interface ethernet g24
switchport trunk allowed vlan add 2
    exit
    interface range ethernet g(3-4)
    switchport trunk native vlan 3
    exit
    interface ethernet g24
switchport trunk allowed vlan add 3
    exit
    If you are still having issue, here is the contact URL  for the Small Business Support Center, maybe a fresh set of eyes can spot the issue;

  • Creating a VLAN on a ESW 520 PoE Switch

    Hi,
we have two Catalyst Express 500 switches and a ESW 520 just purchased. the VLAN on the other two is 2. how do I change the Default to be 2 instead of 100 in the ESW Switch.

    Hi Prasanga,
Just to clarify, are you trying to change the Voice VLAN, or Management VLAN?
The Voice VLAN by default on the ESW is 100, and Management VLAN is 1.
    Thanks!
    Dave

  • I want your valuabale opininon on ESW 500 series switches

In my offiec i want to connect 8 accesspoints and 8 smart boad and 8 pcs to a switch the access points are cisco 1240g series and controlled by a wlan controller.
this switch should be connected to a core switch 4507 using fiber.
can i use these esw switches for this

Not sure what you mean by 8 smart boad - can you be more clear on that?
    Couple of comments:
    - Please note that we recommend the ESW in a Cisco Small Business type deployment with products such as UC500, SR500, AP500. Also, management is via a configuration utility GUI or CCA, not CLI as you would use for the Cisco Catalyst switches. Check this discussion which has a PDF that goes over positioning of the switches- https://www.myciscocommunity.com/message/8385#8385
    - Please check the POE requirements you need against the ESW switches - check the question on at Q & A
    Q. How many devices can the Cisco ESW 500 Series PoE switches power?

  • Esw-540-48 - direclty connected to port 34, still no MAC in ARP table

    Hi all,
    I have a ESW-540-48 with firmware 2.1.21 (latest)
I have the strangest problem: I can 't find the MAC address of a computer plugged directly on the switch in the ARP table.
I'm trying to search by MAC address, and also by port .
If I reboot the switch, it does work as expected.
Do you think it is software related, and in this case is there anything planned to solve this problem ?
Or maybe I should just replace my hardware ?
    Thanks

Hi Firco, it may be possible it is a smart port issue. The ESW switches are very particular to use the correct smart port roles for the connecting devices. I don't think a hardware replacement is warranted unless the given ports absolutely failed to forward.
As a secondary thought, it could also be a spanning tree issue. Ensure you're using RSTP and/or the host ports have port fast enabled. If using classic spanning tree it takes nearly a minute for a port to go to forwarding state. You can disable spanning tree on the port for testing to quickly rule that out.

  • ESW 520 802.1x MAB authentication problem

    Hello,
I am having problem with 802.1x MAB authentication on ESW 520 switch, the authentication server is ACS 5.3.
The Authentication method on ESW is 802.1x & MAC, and Host Authentication mode is Multi Session. When i plug ip phone it never authenticate the phone, and on ACS I get following error message:
Radius authentication failed for USER: aa1effbb8fd4  MAC: aa-1E-FF-bb-8F-D4  AUTHTYPE:  Radius authentication failed
RADIUS Status:Authentication failed    : 11509 Access Service does not allow any EAP protocols
    15004  Matched rule
15012  Selected Access Service - MAB
    11507  Extracted EAP-Response/Identity
11509  Access Service does not allow any EAP protocols
    11504  Prepared EAP-Failure
    11003  Returned RADIUS Access-Reject
For that Access Service I have configured only Host Lookup.
The same ACS configuration is working perfectly on Catalyst 3560G switche.
It seems that ESW switch is not telling ACS that authentication is going to be by MAC address.
Do you have any idea what can be the problem.

Are you hitting the same selection rule? Also is "mab eap" configured globally on the switch, or on the port itself?
Also can you post the port configuration and the show ver of the ESW?
    Thanks,
    Tarik Admani
