Dent in side of MB Pro means ports are unusable - how much to repair?

Hello,
Whilst inside a suitcase my Macbook Pro has suffered a dent to its lower left hand side, so that one of the USB ports, SD card slot and headphone slot are unusable as the casing has come out of place. I have tried to get compensation from the airline but surprise surprise there are loopholes that mean they won't do it for me. If it was just a dent I'd leave it, but because it actually restricts my usage I'd like to get it repaired.
Does anyone know how much Apple charge to repair the lower casing of a Macbook Pro? For reference mine is a late-2011 13" model.
Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure how much it would cost bringing it to the Apple store.

"Memory sold by the Apple Online Store is guaranteed to be compatible with your Macintosh."

Other than Apple there are only two vendors with which I have personal experience and can recommend: Crucial and OWC. People have reported problems with many other brands, yet Crucial and OWC's prices are as good as any you are likely to find.
Go to Crucial and download the little app that examines your system and recommends RAM upgrade options.
Their prices are good but don't have to buy memory from them - determine what you need and buy it from Crucial or OWC / MacSales. You'd be paying Apple a lot more than either one of them, and you don't have to.

  • I am covered by Apple Care, but i have a dent on the corner of my Mac Book Screen. How much does this cost?

There is a dent in the top left corner, and the screen is a little cracked. I've had my macbook for almost a year and a half. I am covered by the Apple Care Program, not sure how much this costs to fix, or if it's automatically covered... Please help!

To fix the dent on the screen enclosure the complete unit would need to be replaced. Accidental damages are not covered under the Apple warranties so it would be at your expense. What the cost is only Apple can tell you that. But it would be somewhere around $500. If Retina model more in the $1000 range.

These are good online stores for Mac compatible RAM
OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/ - They offer Mac tested RAM at very good prices.
Crucial Memory http://www.crucial.com/ - good place to buy RAM from all over the world. They also have an excellent memory selector that allows you to choose memory based on your computer's model

  • Quicktime Pro: When Exporting for Web, how much does it reduce file size?

I'm considering purchasing Quicktime Pro so I can reduce the file size of Quicktime movies so they load quickly to be viewed on my website. Can anyone tell me how much I can expect to be able to reduce the size of a Quicktime file?

I will try some. 50-100 kB for a 4-color PDFs sounds high if any compression at all is used in the graphic. I would suggest that you look a bit at the graphics. They may not be "16-color" graphics (you may have used 4 colors, but the graphic storage would have to be 16 color, 256 color, or millions of colors and I suspect the storage is millions of colors that a lot of scans default to). You could use PhotoShop or simply IrfanView to check the properties of the colors of the images. That would be the first step I would suggest.
Once you have the colors set, then save them as TIFF to minimize loss in the graphic. TIFF has several options for compression and I really can't advise you there. Just select whatever is the default compression. I created a 8.5X11 image with 72dpi and 16 colors, getting a 55 kB file. The corresponding PDF was 60 kB. There is pixelization and such, but that is something for you to test.
Once you you have reasonable graphics, then consider the PDF. As I said, I ended up with a 60 kB PDF. A segment of the PDF is shown below as a JPeg:
When you put the files together, use Save As to finalize the PDF. Working on the graphics first is probably the best way to fix the issue, rather than dealing with the PDF directly. This allows you to clean up the PDFs and be sure that you have the level of colors (not millions, even if you only use 4) etc.

  • Which version macbook pro is this? and how much ram?

    Hi Everybody!
I just bought this 2.4ghz core 2 duo macbook pro 2nd hand:-)
It's probably the mid 2007 version. It's annonced with a max RAM upgrade of 3 gb, but it's to cheap to buy 4gb (2x2)!!
How does it work? Does OSX used the last gig of ram from 3-4gb? or it is just a waste of money?
I use my macbook pro for normal use, and production in logic pro.
    Thanks!
    Kasper

Yes, it's the Santa Rosa chipset. And yes, you have an LED backlit display and the faster frontside bus (that will read 800 MHz in System Profiler).
    The MBP chipsets are:
    • Core Duo - clock speeds of 1.83, 2.0 or 2.16 GHz
    • Core 2 Duo - clock speeds of 2.16 or 2.33 GHz (2.0 GHz C2D chips are only in MBs, not MBPs)
    • Core 2 Duo "Santa Rosa" - clock speeds of 2.2, 2.4 or 2.6 GHz, with a 4 MB L2 cache
    • Core 2 Duo "Penryn" - clock speeds of 2.4, 2.5 or 2.6 GHz, with 3 or 6 MB L2 cache
+Feel free to tune out for this part, the info you need is above.+
I'm using the terms "Santa Rosa" and "Penryn" as they are commonly used on these boards. "Santa Rosa" actually refers to a combination of the Merom-refresh CPU chip with other chips for graphics/wireless (i.e. it's a platform, not a chip, and thus was technically never in an MBP because only the Merom-refresh chip was used, not the whole platform - but the original C2Ds were Merom-based, and "Santa Rosa" sounds better than "Merom-refresh", I suppose). Merom chips (like the Yonah Core Duo chip) were made with the 65 nm process, whereas Penryn is the successor to Merom and is made with the newer 45 nm process.

  • How much RAM can i put in my MacBook Pro 13inch?8GB or 16GB?

I want to upgrade the RAM in my MacBook Pro and wanted to know how much is possible technically. I read 16GB are possible but Apple says 8GB optional. What is right?16GB or 8GB

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You have a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro. Apple says that it only supports 8 GB of memory, but the truth is that you can install up to 16 GB (2x8 GB) of memory on a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro.
If you want 16 GB of memory, you can buy memory in OWC or Crucial (Crucial is cheaper and offers the same compatibility as OWC). If you need help installing memory > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270#link1

  • I recently managed to get the whole casing of my 13" Macbook Pro (Mid-2009) replaced due to a missing foot and dodgy spacebar. The lid is dented and scratched so would like to know how much it would cost to replace? I know its not covered by AppleCare.

So i took my Macbook Pro 13'' (Mid-2009) into Apple because the spacebar was jammed and I had one of the feet of the bottom casing missing which was unusual (black circles). The unibody and bottom plate had a fair few dents and nicks and under AppleCare I was able to get the whole unibody and bottom case fixed for free. Saved myself a good £181!
This now leaves my lid which has one or two noticeable dents and the bottom right part is suffering from several scratches. I was wondering how much a new lid would cost if I took it into Apple? I know it won't be covered under AppleCare as its accidental damage but want to know whether its worth paying for to have a once again dent free Macbook Pro .
As a side note, do Apple upgrade your hardware at all, such as the hard drive or memory? I know it would be cheaper to do it at an independant computer shop or by myself but would like to explore my options first.

Use FireWire, Ethernet, or wireless. The first two can be adapted to a Thunderbolt port.

I just dropped my new macbook pro on the ground, it dents a little. So can I bring it to apple store, and repair it for free? BTW: I bought it just one month ago. Thank you very much

No, user caused accidents are not warranty coverage,  nor are spills, loss, theft etc.
all these user caused issues have no bearing on the warranty coverage.
    they are outside of same.
All laptop mfg. are identical in this nature  (same with your car too of course)

  • Mac pro usb ports won't work when ipod is plugged in

I just bought a used Mac Pro (2008). 8 cores, 12 meg 0f ram, all of this so I wouldnt be limited as I was with my 4 meg Imac. I go to plug in my ipod, and none of the other ports work, I can't use the mouse or keyboard. Is there any way around this. I had to plug the ipod directly into the tower (the port wouldnt work) This is frustrating, I get this model to be more than capable for what I need, and something like this pops up...always something. If anyone out there has had this experience, and figured out a work around, please help. Thanks

okay, that doesn't sound usual. Sounds to me like the usb port is drawing too much power. Try doing a repair permission or SMC reset. If you are using it with a USB hub, maybe that needs plugging in to the wall, or maybe it has gone bad. I can't help you a lot, but just a little bit. repairing permissions is through Disk Utility. SMC goes like this:  shut down the Mac pro, unplug the power cord,  wait 15-20 seconds. reattach power cord, wait about 15 seconds, then press power button. you can maybe try resetting the PRAM-shut down Mac, turn on computer, hold down Command, Option,P and R keys before grey screen appears. Hold down until computer restarts again and you hear the 2nd startup sound. Let go of the keys.  You can also check in "About this mac" (more info) to see if there's something wrong with the USB ports themselves.
Other than that, could be logic board battery. Maybe Archive and install. Sorry, the crystal ball has gone dark. I"m sure someone else can enlighten you more than I can.  I always plugged my ipod directly into my tower via the front USB port...

  • MacBook Pro USB ports only sorta working...

Both USB ports on my MacBook Pro have stopped being recognized. I can still synchronize my iPhone, but cannot use thumb drives or external hard drives. I've tried all the previously suggested remedies to no avail. Other thoughts, please.

    Hey deanfromjensen beach,

That is odd that your USB ports are working to sync your iPhone but not working with thumb drives or hard drives.  Do USB keyboards or mice work?
