Dented Bottom Case on a 17" MacBook Pro

Recently my MacBook Pro had a painful meeting with a conrete floor resulting in a noticeable dent in the bottom left corner of the bottom casing (how it survived at all, I don't know). The machine is completely functional and the dent is only a cosmetic inconvenience. I took a trip into the Apple Store and was told that it would be $1500 to replace the bottom case. Needless to say, I laughed at the price quote and left. I've found retailers online who carry the casing part for the mbp but haven't been able to find a guide for replacing the bottom case (I already looked on iFixit, they have a guide that gets almost up to switching out the bottom case but I don't know if it covers everything since it indicates that many components are left attached to the case). I don't plan on having Apple replace the case as based on that price, I'd rather wait and get a new machine when the core2's are released but I would like to attempt at replacing the case myself. I'm fairly adept at this sort of material but admit that the deepest into an Apple portable I've gotten was reattaching an airport antenna on a 12" powerbook. Has anyone had experience with replacing the bottom case of a macbook pro (or a powerbook for that matter, I imagine its mostly the same only with some connectors changed and the IR port added). How complicated of a process is it? From what I can find online, I should have wished for the damanged to have affected the top case instead as its a much easier swap.

My understanding is that it is the most difficult of all of the tasks.
Many, if not all, Apple Repair centers ship out bottom case repairs to their Depot for repair.
I think you can get far with iFixit, but I think you may end up paying more then $1500 if you mess up the install, so is not worth it.
So, here's my thought:
Go to an apple store, talk to one of the people that actually repairs computers. Ask them, if you got them a bottom case, if they could do it for you. Offer them $100-200 for their service minimum.
If not, search around for another apple authorized repair center.
You could also check out colorwarepc.com to see if they replace bottom cases, or just spray paint them.

Thanks for the suggestion, the next step was to call Apple, who gave me a claim number, which I discovered you must have to get anything done with them.  They refered me to a Apple store or repair center, after some reseach took it to the Computer Store in Mobile, Alabama and they were excellent.  They took pictures of the screen with bug submitted it to Apple who denied the claim but they kept kicking it up to the next level and finally Apple agreed to sent new cover.  The Computer Store had the cover the next day, they changed it out and now I am bug free.  If your in the area of Mobile Alabama you can feel good about getting help from the Computer Store.  For the two folks that responded to my note, Thank You, good comments and good advice.

  • Looking for a case for my new Macbook Pro 13'' 2011

    Any help would be great!
I am looking for a case for my new MacBook Pro 13'' 2011. I went to the Speck website where there are plenty of nice cases to choose from, except I am a little worried that it wont fit the MBP properly. The new MBP 13'' has the same dimensions as the older model but I am mostly worried about the power mag not properly plugging into the side of the MBP.
Have you guys heard of anyone having problems with their L-shaped power mags not fully fitting onto the macbook pro?
I like the Speck brand very much on my MBP 15'' because I haven't had any problems with it.

Speck casing is good and will fit EXACTLY what your MBP is.

What is the best protective case for 2011 13" Macbook Pro (that can withstand an active 4 year old :).   My 4 year old plays with the teaching apps on my iPhone 4 in the otterbox case and its great - the bulkiness of the otterbox not an issue and I love being able to give the phone to him and feel completely comforatable. I would love to find something to protect my Macbook Pror. Thanks for any help!!

I would definitely go for a Hardsheel or a Perforated Hardshell Case

  • Bottom plate "bulge" on 2012 MacBook Pro 13" (outward dent)

I purchased my first Mac this summer at the 2012 refresh of the Mac line. I purchased a 2012 MacBook Pro, 13" non-retina
I went to pick my MacBook up about an hour ago and noticed a small dent on the bottom, I noticed it because it was bulging outward (See photo). I'm pretty suprised because I keep my MacBook in immaculate condition.
Curious, and pretty upset, I opened my computer up to see what the issue was. This is the only flaw to come to my baby since I bought it
Upon opening the bottom case, I saw that the issue was a screw in between my hard drive and my Superdrive  ( the that stuck out a little further than the other one that was lined up with it).
I am a little bothered by this, considering that the only two pads on the inside of the bottom plate are for these two screws and one failed to do it's job.
Obviously, the case damage takes my computer away from mint condition and drops resale value.
I purchased this computer from Best Buy and purchased the 1 year ADH warranty from them.
Would something like this be covered? Do I have any reason to be concerned, aside from the appearance? Is anyone else having this issue?
Also, should I bring this in to the Apple Store, which is about a 45 minute drive from here, or to best buy (about 10 minutes)?
Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Well, basically, I went in to Best Buy and they told me it was a cosmetic issue and that it wasn't covered, but they still needed to take my computer for "diagnostics". Thinking they might actually fix my problem, I blindly gave it to them. Two weeks goes by and it showed up in the mail from out of state. My dent wasnt fixed, but upon boot, i saw that they wiped my entire operating system.
I looked in the packet they sent and they said it was due to "operating system corruption". Long story short - they didn't want to look like idiots for taking it and not finding any problems, and made some s*it up. Lesson learned. I will never buy another Mac from best buy, their protection plan, or deal with Geek Squad.

  • What is the best keyboard case for the 15" Macbook Pro Retina?

I currently just bought the new 15" Macbook Pro Retina display to replace my old 2007 Macbook 13" however I am reluctant to use it until I find a keyboard cover.  I have read many forums already and tried the Moshi keyboard cover (which didn't fit well at all) however I still cannot decide which keyboard cover to use.  So far I have found two keyboard covers that look O.K. any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

  • Where can I get a case specifically for my MacBook Pro with Retina Display?

I really want to get a case/sleeve that really fits my MacBook Pro with Retina Display; however, everywhere I look only has cases for the regular 15" MacBook Pro. I want something that has a tight fit on my Retina. Any ideas?

My guess is they wouldn't introduce new production line just for the 1 or two milimeter difference. They will probably just change their marketing material and websites to add Retina as compatible. Then again I'm not a manufacturer.
In reality though, apart from hard-shell cases/sheilds that have to attach directly on the laptop, the cases and sleeves are already compatible.

  • New case for old model macbook pro 15inch.

I live in the UK and I'm having trouble sourcing a new cover for my 15" macbook pro. It's the old model with the silver keys. I would really appreciate any information at all regarding where I can find a new case. I'm looking for a protective one that fits it perfectly.  I'm desperate! Thank you! Dan

If you are looking for a hard shell that might be a problem but if you just want a sleeve, then as long as the sleeve is made for a 15 inch MBP, you won't have problems...

    Hi Everyone,
I am one of the engineers at Speck involved in designing and launching the MacBook See Thru Case. Thank you for your interest and feedback regarding this product. However, after reading through this discussion page, I feel it is necessary to dispel some misconceptions about this case. We are a case company that has been designing, engineering and selling cases for years. I'm not sure which Agent 18 case (great cases by the way) is being referred to in the previous thread, but without knowing the exact case, I am assuming there are inherent differences in the mounting system used. Specifically the following:
    1. The "Sandpaper effect" occurs when two surfaces rub against each other. In the example with the ipod case, I believe (and because I don’t know which case it is, I can be wrong) that the scratching was a result of the ipod sliding into the case, or sleeve. Typically hard PC cases have tight tolerances, which leave a minimal amount of clearance. Because of this, the ipod is more likely to be scratched when inserted into the case. However, unlike the ipod case example, the Macbook case clips onto the MacBook. Instead of a sliding motion, the MacBook See Thru is a snap on and lift off system. Also, because the See Thru is clipped onto the Macook, it is a static system, thus no surfaces would be moving against each other.
    2. More importantly, we designed the MacBook See Thru with small spacers that keep a minimal distance between the surface of the See Thru and the MacBook. This means that unlike the Ipod case that sits against the surface of the Ipod, the MacBook See Thru maintains uniform clearance.
Lastly, from a consumer standpoint, and user of many, many different CE devices, I am always hesitant to use adhesive films on my products. In my experience, they tend to leave a residue, which is sometimes difficult to get off, and makes your device have a higher affinity for dirt. This is not to say that all films are created equal (because there are some companies that have engineered them not to leave as much of a residue). Also, films tend to scratch and rip easier. Please remember that there may be some bias in my comments (being a Speck engineer that has been so involved in this project), so take them at your own discretion. But don't take my word for it, go out to the Apple Store and check them out for yourself. I think you won't be disappointed.

  • Unsendable email error panel runs off bottom edge of my small MacBook pro. Cannot move or reduce the error panel to access the functional part of it.

    HELP!
I crafted an email for a club I belong to. I filled the blind copy address area with a large list of email addresses. The message did not send, the server (Earthlink) rejected my list of addresses. I am on a small Macbook pro laptop running OS X and the rejected email list goes below and beyond the desktop space. The area on the error panel that has functionality is out of reach and the mail window won't allow me to get to it. I am stuck with an unsendable email on my desktop. I can't delete it, the red button in the upper left corner is off, inactive. The sizing function in the lower right will make the email window smaller but the "Cannot send using this server" panel with the long list of emails remains the same size with the part I need to access running off the bottom out of reach.
The unsendable email comes back when I force quit. It comes back when I restart. I am at my wits end.
Hope there is help for this.

I'm bumping this back up. Does anyone have a solution for this? It's making me crazy, too!

  • Most popular case for a 15" Macbook pro

I would like to know which carrying case is the most popular for a 15" Macbook Pro with retina to be used by a college student who may be tough on a laptop?

This is a tough question since everyone has a different need and sense of what they like.
With that said Brenthaven makes some excellent cases for the MacBook Pro. If you dont have that many other accessories to carry then their Elliot slim case is an excellent case. (http://www.brenthaven.com/macbook-cases/elliot-slim-brief)

  • Will adding more ram to my Macbook Pro make it faster?

So I have about mid-2010 Macbook Pro and after all these OS upgrades throughout the years (currently running OSX 10.9.5), it's starting to run annoying slow but still useable. My specs on this Macbook is a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB of ram. If I upgrade my ram to 6 or 8 GB will my Macbook run a lot more faster? I use my Macbook mostly for entertainment purposes such as web browsing, movies and music as well as for school mainly Microsoft Powerpoint and Word. Also, if I were to upgrade my ram is it as simple as popping out the old ram and installing the new ones? Thanks.

    Hi kidrobot123,
Thanks for your question.  Think of Random Access Memory (RAM) as the amount of information your computer can think about at any one time.  Your operating system requires a certain amount of memory for basic functions.  Every software program that you have open needs memory as well.  So, increasing the available memory is one of the things you can do to improve performance.
The resource below explains how to do it.  I've highlighted the section of the article that pertains to your Mid 2010 model.  Click on the link for more details.

    Additional notes
For best performance, fill both memory slots, installing an equal memory module in each slot.
    Removing or installing memory
Warning: The internal components of your MacBook Pro can be warm. If you have been using your MacBook Pro, wait ten minutes after shutting down the computer to let the internal components cool before continuing.
Step 1: Remove the bottom case
Shut down your MacBook Pro. Disconnect the power adapter, Ethernet cable, USB cables, security lock, and any other cables connected to the MacBook Pro to prevent damaging the computer.
Turn over your MacBook Pro and remove the ten (10) screws that secure the bottom case. Because the screws are different lengths, note the screw lengths and locations so you can replace the screws correctly. Put them aside in a safe place. Lift off the case and place it to the side.
Touch a metal surface inside the computer to discharge any static electricity from your body.
Step 2: Remove existing memory (if present)
Push the levers on the sides of the memory module in an outward direction to release the module from the memory card slot. The memory pops up at an angle. Before removing it, make sure you find the half-circle notches. If you don’t, try pressing the levers outward again.
Hold the memory module by its notches and remove it from the slot.
    Remove the other memory module.
Important: Hold the memory modules by their edges, and do not touch the gold connectors.
    Step 3: Install memory
Align the notch on the gold edge of the module with the notch in the lower memory slot.
Tilt the card and push the memory into the slot.
Use two fingers with firm, even pressure to push down on the memory module. There should be a click when you insert the memory correctly.
Repeat this procedure to install an additional memory module in the top slot. Press down on the module to make sure it is level.
Note: Make sure you install the memory according to this illustration, with the gold contacts inserted almost completely into the connector.
Step 4: Replace the bottom case
Replace and tighten the ten screws you removed earlier, making sure to put the different length screws in their proper locations.

  • Dented MacBook Pro case and lid

The top right corner of the lid and bottom right corner of the base of the late 2008 macbook pro are slightly dented. I've had my Macbook Pro for about 3 weeks now and just got round to opening it last week and after further inspection this past week I've noticed today the lid and base has a small dent in it. Looking at the corners i can see clearly they're not rounded the same and the base corner is grazed and lighter colour of aluminum.
I've kept my mbp in the box for 3 weeks even this past week when ive been using it, its never been out the house and i've been working on it at my desk away from me damaging it. So I have received the product like this.
I rang up AppleCare and they said to take it to a local repair centre, which is 30 miles away, ill be going there on Monday.
Has anyone found any dents on their macbook pros?
I have AppleCare that I paid for at the time of the laptop purchase.
What will Apple do? Will they replace it? Since its dented..and the new casing technology...it'll be pretty difficult and time consuming to just replace the case dont you think ?
What do you think they do, and what normally happens in this situation anybody know?
How long do you think the repair will take?
I don't expect to pay the amount of money I have done for this for it to come with these problems. First day i opened it i noticed greasy finger prints and marks on keyboard, i used the cloth included to get rid of these, but just noticing this dent, its really annoyed me. My came straight from the factory I think, I ordered it the day they were released, about an hour after I recall and waited a couple of weeks for it to be delivered. Now this...
Thanks for any responses in advance.

I have a tiny pinhole dent on my late '08 Mac on the top of the lid in between the apple logo and the edge (also purchased near rls date). I'm not sure if it was there when I purchased, but I don't think so. However, I'm suffering from cognitive dissonance as I treat this think like a baby. It really aggravates me... I've tried to pop it out (rather miserably) with a suction cup to no avail. What recourse do you think I'd have with Apple. I'd definitely like to get it fixed. These new aluminum body macs are far too prone to denting, because if I caused the dent, it wansn't from any overt action... I haven't even taken the thing outside since I've had it... sits on a computer desk at all times. HELP, I must have OCD because it bugs me to look at!
I also think these books heat up way too much as my cpu hovers at near 80F (~78) when under full load, according to iStat, but that's another story.
