Dented MacBook Pro Casing

I have a 15" MacBook Pro which is dented and I don't have the AppleCare Protection. What are my options if i take it to the Apple Store? The dent is located at the top of my left speaker. I dont know how it got there. And im not convinced it wasn't caused by something overheating inside the computer. any options? Can they replace the case? Pricing? Thanks. FYI. It is the latest Mac Pro. Bought in mid 2009.

Bboy23: See this thread for discussion and illustrations of the kind of damage that is easily caused by picking the MBP up one-handed at its weakest point, directly above the left speaker grille:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1780318&tstart=0
Does that resemble what you have? Such damage has nothing to do with heat; it's the result of putting excessive strain on a part of the chassis that is punched full of holes.
EDIT: Ah yes, I see now you've posted pictures. You've bent your case by picking it up improperly.

  • Dented MacBook Pro case and lid

The top right corner of the lid and bottom right corner of the base of the late 2008 macbook pro are slightly dented. I've had my Macbook Pro for about 3 weeks now and just got round to opening it last week and after further inspection this past week I've noticed today the lid and base has a small dent in it. Looking at the corners i can see clearly they're not rounded the same and the base corner is grazed and lighter colour of aluminum.
I've kept my mbp in the box for 3 weeks even this past week when ive been using it, its never been out the house and i've been working on it at my desk away from me damaging it. So I have received the product like this.
I rang up AppleCare and they said to take it to a local repair centre, which is 30 miles away, ill be going there on Monday.
Has anyone found any dents on their macbook pros?
I have AppleCare that I paid for at the time of the laptop purchase.
What will Apple do? Will they replace it? Since its dented..and the new casing technology...it'll be pretty difficult and time consuming to just replace the case dont you think ?
What do you think they do, and what normally happens in this situation anybody know?
How long do you think the repair will take?
I don't expect to pay the amount of money I have done for this for it to come with these problems. First day i opened it i noticed greasy finger prints and marks on keyboard, i used the cloth included to get rid of these, but just noticing this dent, its really annoyed me. My came straight from the factory I think, I ordered it the day they were released, about an hour after I recall and waited a couple of weeks for it to be delivered. Now this...
Thanks for any responses in advance.

I have a tiny pinhole dent on my late '08 Mac on the top of the lid in between the apple logo and the edge (also purchased near rls date). I'm not sure if it was there when I purchased, but I don't think so. However, I'm suffering from cognitive dissonance as I treat this think like a baby. It really aggravates me... I've tried to pop it out (rather miserably) with a suction cup to no avail. What recourse do you think I'd have with Apple. I'd definitely like to get it fixed. These new aluminum body macs are far too prone to denting, because if I caused the dent, it wansn't from any overt action... I haven't even taken the thing outside since I've had it... sits on a computer desk at all times. HELP, I must have OCD because it bugs me to look at!
I also think these books heat up way too much as my cpu hovers at near 80F (~78) when under full load, according to iStat, but that's another story.

  • Dented Macbook Pro 13 Inch

Hello, I was at school with my Macbook Pro (We have to take them to school), and someone was walking past my desk and knocked my Macbook of the table. Of course I was very annoyed, and to make things worse it was open as it fell and hit the ground. The top left corner on my screen is dented, and the bottom left is also dented, the other two are fine. The screen is fine, but my main question is how much will this cost roughly? If it is a lot should I just leave it and move along?

Lying is not a good thing. They will see through it immediately and that will only taint your case.
I should the truth and see if they can make you any kind of deal.
Did you purchase it on a credit card?
Some of them will replace an item that gets damaged.

  • Dented Macbook Pro. Screen seems fine, but damamge in the future

Okay, so this morning. I find my Macbook Pro on the ground, and unfortunately it had a small, (but deep) dent. It isn't touching the display, but every time I open and close the lid, and when it gets shaken up from typing, I can see the pressure marks on the inside.
So, does non-constant pressure from the inside of the display, pose any threat to the machine?
I am getting it repaired from Apple very soon. but in the next few days, is it okay to use?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Bummer! The dent is on the outside of the lid? And you see pressure marks from the inside?
I'm not sure how Apple will repair this--whether they will replace the entire display or just the metal case. If they feel the display has been compromised, very likely they will want to replace it. From your description, it seems like the biggest threat to the machine would just be that the display might fail. But there is also the possibility that the shock of the drop may have affected something else.
Call Apple and ask them if it's OK to use it and write down who you talk to. If they say it's OK, then that makes them responsible if there are any adverse consequences. If they say not to, then don't. And just on general principles, back up all your data before sending it off.
    Good luck!

  • Electric charge on Macbook Pro casing

I just notice that when I rn my fingers across the casing on either side of the trackpad on my Macbook Pro 17" I can feel a small current passing through the casing. This only happens when the AC adapter is plugged in and charging the laptop. Anyone else notice this? I have searched the posts but could not find an explaination.

I have this issue too, only when I plug in the UAE (Dubai). We have 110V three prong adapters there, and still, it buzzes and sometimes shocks me like a mad girlfriend.
I called Apple Care, added it to my list of issues, and they're sending me a new one. Although some say it's not a problem, it most definitely is. After my MagSafe sparks, battery grows fat and computer vibrates from electric currents, there is most certainly a defect w/ my unit.
Sorry I can't help you w/ your issue. One thing to note. Once I got back to Toronto, the electrical issues stopped, but suddenly, for about a week, there was a nasty scraping sound coming from behind the keyboard. It was about 5x louder than the whine and sounded like a hockey player sprinting down the ice.

  • MacBook Pro casing

    Hi everyone,
My Macbook Pro is getting on for 3 year old now and I treat it very carefully. But recently I've been noticing that there's a flat area on the underneath of it, on the casing, that I can sort of pop in and out, like that area has grown weak almost. Its making worry because I don't know if its affecting the inside components at all, whether its making contact with any hardware when it 'pops' in. Anyone having the same issue or has any advice/reassuring comments?
    Thanks

I bit of a weak point,  but I have never heard of a problem associated with this.
Bottom case is access for changing your RAM among other things.  There are two clips you can try to make contact with.

  • MacBook Pro casing blocking slot-drive

My MacBook Pro's right corner casing (above the slot drive) was pushed down so hard that the slot drive was curved that pushing a CD inside was impossible. I was able to lift it up which gave it terrible scratch marks. The cloth that prevents dusts from going in is a bit damaged. I am able to put CD-ROM's inside but it scratches it considerably. My Slot-drive is scratch sensitive that the slightest scratches on a CD will give it a hard time reading.
I don't know how this happened and I am wondering if it's possible for me to go to the Apple store to get some repairs. I really dislike the look of the scratches and my warranty has ended. I don't know what to do. Please help.
    Thanks in advance.

Go to the store, pay a lot. Or, DYI:

If you replace the Top Case, you will probably need to replace the keyboard as well, since it is held down with adhesive and is very hard to unstick and transfer without damage:

  • Late 2013 MacBook Pro Casing Replacement

I've a late 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina. I damaged the top casing and the display housing (chips). Where can I get them replaced?

Sorry to hear that. Apple can do it but it is going to be expensive (estimated to be around $300-$400). Another way, though not recommended, is to buy the part off eBay and have someone install it. The latter option is risky so I wouldn't do it but it is an option.
FYI, I really like their cases. Think about getting one of these once you replace the part.

  • Slight gap/bending in Macbook Pro casing?

I noticed a couple of gaps forming where the casing comes together (the plastic gray trim on the perimeter of the keyboard/wristpad area no longer touching the other half of the case where the optical drive slot lies).
I started noticing it after I got my computer back from being fixed for a fan at Genius Bar at Apple retail, although I'm not sure if that was related.
Would this be something they could fix at the store? I was still under warranty when I got it back from Apple one week ago.
Also: photos to show what I mean:
    http://img394.imageshack.us/my.php?image=macbookprorightmisalignrr2.jpg
    http://img382.imageshack.us/my.php?image=macbookproleftmisalignmup6.jpg

I don't know if they could fix it at the store or not, but I would think that they would be able to. It could well be related to the recent repair, and I would certainly bring it to their attention. The repair should have its own warranty, even if your Applecare has run out in the meantime. These gaps should not be there.
    Good luck!

  • Cleaning MacBook Pro casing?

    Hi folks,
Any good suggestions for cleaning the body of the unibody MBP? Mine's got a bit dull in the colour, tried cleaning it figuring it was a dust build up and now it's got a slight blotted look going on. Any good ways of cleaning so it looks new again?!

Through all my different careers, I have learned it takes an oil to break down an oil. I have had this problem where no matter how clean my hands are, and using isoprophil alchohol or iKlear, it still doesnt remove the oil residue off the keyboard or alluminum unibody. So what i did was dampen a cloth with "gook off", which is an oil or sticky residue remover. This actually made it greasier, but after rubbing my Pro with Gook off and then cleaning off the Gook off with alcohol, the residue was gone! I do this every so often when the keyboard gets shiny or I see oil residue below the keyboard where my palms rest. Rub Gook off using hard pressure, then remove the gook off with alcohol or iKlear, or whatever watered down cleaner you prefer. This is the only method that has worked for me and my school that actually works, leaving my Pro and the student laptops looking brand new. I do not recomend this for the screen because I have not tried it yet and have not needed to try it on the screen. Rub hard!

  • Dented Macbook Pro. Applecare or DIY?

So my mbp got slammed while it was in my backpack on a mountainous drive a jeep in Tibet. It still works expect the superdrive. Do you guys think i should send it apple care? I bought it only a month ago
I assume they will charge me. thats understandable but...
    would they cancel my warranty?
would they be more expensive then doing it myself?
or should i just replace all the parts i can myself. know any good sites that sells em?
    Thanks guys.

Sorry to hear of the bad luck.
If the machine still works, I'd say leave it alone. If you're concerned with the appearance you could consider a skin or cover - there are some really nifty ones out.
It will cost a fair bit to replace, several hundred $$ I'd say. Take a look at ifixit.com to get an idea of part costs and they also have repair guides. I used to have a take apart guide somewhere which I'd be happy to e-mail to you.
Finally, you never know your credit card if you paid with one might cover accidental damage, as might travel insurance and even home insurance.
    Best of luck.
    PS - How was Tibet?

  • MacBook Pro 13 or 13.3?

    Hi,
I am a new macbook pro user. I was just wandering if Macbook pro 13" is the same as Macbook 13.3". And also my friends on mins have dents on the Macbook pro, Would Apple void the warrenty if lets say i have a dented macbook Pro ?

AppleCare does not put any coverage on the aluminum body or the screen.  You will most likely be covered if you drop it unless it is deemed the dent is what caused system failure.
The MBP 13" is about the same as the MB 13" except performance, screen, and style.

  • MacBook Pro Problem with screws I think

So I recently saw my MacBook Pro casing lifting up and when I lifted up to look inside I saw the screw is attached to nothing. So I went on google and looked up the shell and there should be a slot where the screw on the left hand side screws into. I'm taking my Mac into a Apple Authorized Reseller to put a 500GB HDD and might ask them to fix it. Will they charge me as they charged me bloody 800 Bucks to replace a monitor and getting the hard drive done will cost around €260. So do you think they will fix it for free? Here are some pictures. Also I have Apple Care

    GeekOfComedy:
Hope Apple gets it sorted out for you. Having computer problems (sort of like having car problems on a long road trip) is not much fun and very frustrating.
Thanks for leaving feedback in Apple Discussions by marking the "solved" post.

  • Dirty Macbook pro case

What is the best thing to use to clean the brushed metalk macbook pro casing?

For the casing, I personally use Pledge Multi-Surface wipes. No problems, and the casing is cleaned and streak-free. I've been using this exclusively for the seven months I've owned my MBP.
Others have stated they used Clorox Wipes (one post stated there was no bleach in the wipes).
For the screen, I haven't had to clean mine yet but I would think any laptop screen cleaner would be OK. I know Apple sells a product exclusively in their stores for the screens called iKlear. I would say any LCD cleaner that is ammonia and alcohol free would be fine.

  • Why I chose the MacBook over the MacBook Pro

This year I had a choice between the MacBook and MacBook Pro and pricing aside, chose the MacBook instead. Like many who have grappled with this decision I thought I'd share my thoughts on why I ultimately went with a MacBook:
    1. Nearly identical processing power between the two. Most of the time larger means better/faster, but apple has nearly identical hardware so in this case larger just means larger.
    2. I don't play many games or require a dedicated graphics card. A lot of people will say the graphics card on the MacBook Pro is far better, and in some sense it is, but the MacBook still has a decent card and the changes for someone not doing a ton of video work are non-existence. Plus, as I tell people who really want to play a lot of games, you should get a cheap pc desktop since the cards are worlds better than anything Apple sells.
    3. Larger (better?) keyboard. I contend the keyboard is better although many would argue. Either way you see it the keyboard is larger and it is ridiculous that a 13" laptop has a larger keyboard than a 15" and 17". Apple really needs to update the casing for keyboards on the MacBook Pro's that actually use the space given. This was a big point for me since I cant stand the cramp keyboard of the MacBook Pro.
    4. Lighter/Compact. I must say small size means you can take it almost anywhere easily. I can't imagine pulling out a 17" MacBook Pro on an airplane.
    5. Harddrive swap and casing. While many are attached to the titanium design of the MacBook Pro (not me) the MacBook casing is amazing in its ability to swap in new drives and memory. This is another advantage I can't imagine why apple hasn't added to the other models.
    6. Price. Now, originally I did say I chose them pricing aside, and I did. I could have gotten either, but at the end of the day its nice to know I saved $1000 and I travel comfortably knowing that if someone steals my laptop on a trip or it breaks, I won't have to sell a lung to get a new one.
I think if Apple finally updates the MacBook Pro casing with some of the features of the MacBook and makes a real difference in hardware between the processors I might have changed my mine, but I'm am so glad I purchased the smaller more compact MacBook than its counterpart the MacBook Pro.

"I think if Apple finally updates the MacBook Pro casing with some of the features of the MacBook and makes a real difference in hardware between the processors I might have changed my mine, but I'm am so glad I purchased the smaller more compact MacBook than its counterpart the MacBook Pro."
I like the casing on the MacBook better too and wish the MBP had that same rugged one. The aluminum, or whatever they use on the MBP has always seemed sort of frail to me, with wobbly lid closings and poor fits of the battery case, etc.
But I did go for the MBP. The main point for me? The higher screen resolution. I would have had a resolution DROP going for the MB and instead I got a resolution INCREASE going to the MBP.
In fact, the screen resolution of the MBP is the same as that on my 20" iMac G5!
I guess different things are different priority for different users.
