Dents in Unibody

My sister threw a flashlight at me, and it hit the top of my new MacBook Pro, making two average-sized dents in the cover.
Does anybody know if Apple's warranty covers this?
Also, should I be worried? Is there a risk of my screen breaking because of these dents?
They're average-sized dents. One of them has a black spot which leads me to believe that it may had scraped a lot of the aluminum.
Thanks

Apple's warranty covers issues relating to faults or issues in manufacture, but are not an insurance policy against external damage - even if you're still under warranty. If you were to visit an Apple Store, at least they could give you a sense of future damage resulting from the dents; there's a fair chance performance won't be affected, but there's no way of knowing that other sensitive areas like the battery may be damaged or even ruptured.
Without knowing the nature of the full damage, it would be foolhardy to estimate the price of repair.

  • Replacing the upper case?

I had some problems with a bad tech about a year ago on my MBP (mid 2010, unibody), where one of the rubber feet came off, and I took it into the apple store.  They decided to replace them for free for me, but in the process dented the unibody lower case so that the bottom does not fit perfectly.  Well, they didn't record this, and then told me I would have to pay to fix it and my computer was out of warranty.
In any case, I have just delt with it since, but now, I was thinking that I may just replace the bottom case myself, but can't seem to find anything to tell me the right way to take it apart so that I don't damage anything.  I've found some of the cases, online, for around $100, and when I went to the apple store, they told me it was several hundred dollars.
Besides all of my frustration in this not being my fault, I am trying to decide what is my best course of action here.  To buy a case and install it myself, or just to sell it (computer works fine, has Mountain Lion, no damage to screen, just some scratches on the bottom of the case, and the dent mentioned), and buy a newer one.  Just not sure how much I would get for it, now.

  • Strange marks/dents on 2010 Unibody MacBook Pro

    Hey everyone,
Had my MacBook Pro 15" from new in late 2010, and it's been great so far.
More recently, I've been noticing these very strange marks on the casing, on the bottom right corner, near to the IR port (next to the flashing white light). There's a mark on the front, which looks as if it's "coming out" of the IR slot, and then another mark on top of the casing, in the same location (this one can't really be seen in the attached photos). They don't seem to be stains as such, but more depression marks that you'd get if you compressed soft metal. They're like white-coloured creases in the metal - very weird!
I've tred rubbing/cleaning, but they won't go away. Thinking about it, I'm right handed, and the marks are right under where I rest my arm/wrist when typing. There is also a faint line starting to appear to the right of the trackpad, which I have noticed over the last few days. But I would have thought that the Unibody would be able to take more than just the weight of my forearm! I don't lean on the MacBook, just lightly rest my wrist whilst typing. There're not sweat stains, either, because I lean on my shirt sleeve, as opposed to my bare skin touching the MacBook.
Anyway - does anyone know what they are, or has anyone else had them before? Should I be worried about them? I've attached some pictures to help. Sorry about the lighting - but it's the only way they would show up on camera!
    Many thanks,
    number1golfer

  • I recently managed to get the whole casing of my 13" Macbook Pro (Mid-2009) replaced due to a missing foot and dodgy spacebar. The lid is dented and scratched so would like to know how much it would cost to replace? I know its not covered by AppleCare.

So i took my Macbook Pro 13'' (Mid-2009) into Apple because the spacebar was jammed and I had one of the feet of the bottom casing missing which was unusual (black circles). The unibody and bottom plate had a fair few dents and nicks and under AppleCare I was able to get the whole unibody and bottom case fixed for free. Saved myself a good £181!
This now leaves my lid which has one or two noticeable dents and the bottom right part is suffering from several scratches. I was wondering how much a new lid would cost if I took it into Apple? I know it won't be covered under AppleCare as its accidental damage but want to know whether its worth paying for to have a once again dent free Macbook Pro .
As a side note, do Apple upgrade your hardware at all, such as the hard drive or memory? I know it would be cheaper to do it at an independant computer shop or by myself but would like to explore my options first.

  • I'm looking for a replacement (new or in excellent condition) unibody casing (top only) for a 17-inch mid-2009 macbook pro. Thanks.

    Hi,
I've dented my Macbook Pro and I was wondering if someone out there might be interested in selling the part that I need, which is the top casing to a mid-2009 unibody Macbook Pro 17". I know that these things exist (sometimes) on eBay and iFixit, but I was originally hoping to get a new part, not a used one, since it's difficult to know the exact state of the part when buying online.
        Thanks.

To 'sig': I failed to mention it before (I was going to, but abstained myself in the end), but I think you meant 'classifieds' (with an 's' at the end, as in 'advertisements'); we all know these forums are certainly not 'classified', but then again this other most graceful reminder will hopefully serve to further warn participants that this is most clearly not the place for classified postings.

  • Dent in MacBook Pro

So apparently my boyfriend dropped my MacBook Pro and it put a dent in it. He wasn't aware when it happened and I didn't go to use it until today, when I noticed it. The laptop was open when it happened, so the lid is fine. The dent looks sort of like it's wrinkled and it sticks up. It's on the left edge of the laptop, below the keyboard. The lid doesn't close all the way because of it. He is going to pay to have it replaced as long as it's what he can afford. But my question is how much will that cost and how long will it take? It's a separate piece from the bottom plate, and the laptop works just fine. I bought it in June, brand new, from Apple with the AppleCare protection plan, but obviously this is not covered since it is accidental damage. I've just been very aggravated and I'm very particular about the condition of my stuff. I'm not really willing to just "deal with it". Thanks.

When did you buy it? If you bought it in November 12, 2010 or later, it is still under warranty. Unfortunately, the warranty doesn't cover accidents. Usually the Apple Store is nice enough to replace it anyway. But to replace the aluminum unibody... anywhere from $200-500... not sure exactly.

  • Dent in Macbook pro 15 inch

I have a dent in my Macbook Pro 15 inch, early 2011
It is located near the battery indicator on the side of the laptop.
How much will it approximately cost to fix this?
This dent caused small gap between the unibody and the bottom case.
    Thanks a lot

Such dents require replacement of the case itself to repair.  I don't know how much it cost in a recent unibody MacBook Pro, but when I dropped my older (non-unibody) MacBook Pro in 2010 and dented it in that same place, I was quoted $610 for the repairs.  But, only Apple can tell you what the cost will be for your MacBook Pro.

  • HELP! I dropped my Macbook Pro Retina - Dents & scratches!

I accidentally dropped it from my bed.. It left a dent at the bottom right corner of my display (where the plastic and unibody meets). On top of that, there is a faint long scratches on the unibody. How much does it cost to fix this? Or what other methods can I do to fix this?
Cosmetic is so important to me.
    Thank you

Bring the MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  You will be advised what the repairs will cost.  Understand it will not be covered by the warranty and the cost will be in the hundreds of dollars.
    Ciao.

  • Can i purchase a new unibody for my MacBook Pro?

My laptop has dented, Is it possible to have a new unibody installed?

We can't answer that, as we don't know specifically what part is dented.  Further, a dent is an indication of physical trauma, and no matter how well-behaved your computer may be right now, it could fail at any time.  Or it could have nothing wrong with the internals whatsoever.  Be prepared, by keeping the data on that machine backed up very frequently, and be ready at a moment's notice to plunk down some cash for repairs or replacement.

  • Bottom plate of Retina MacBook's unibody does not fit perfectly

    Hi there,
today I noticed that the bottom plate of my rMBP's unibody  doesn't fit perfectly. Now I wonder if this is a reason to take the MacBook back to Apple. I took a photo to show you what I mean. Is anyone here seeing that at his/her rMBP, too?

****Has this ever happened to anyone???
**** How will this damage the macbook?
**** Should I get it fixed or just put on an outter protecter case?
This kind of damage isn't common. But on forums like this, there have been several instances of dented MBP cases.
Of course, there's no way to be sure how the damaged happened, but judging from the aluminum exterior, it was dropped on the lower edge.
Getting an exterior case sounds like a way to stop damage from getting worse. If you can easily push the edge so it's completely closed, then the foam case should accomodate your MBP, and stymie further damage. Repair is likely to be pricey; very pricey.

  • I dropped my macbook pro 17" from about 4 feet from my shelf onto a hard floor and it dinged the corner pretty bad, but it still works OK. a year back also it fell of from 1ft height but that time there was not any dent.

I dropped my macbook pro 17" from about 4 feet from my shelf onto a hard floor and it dinged the corner pretty bad, but it still works OK. a year back also it fell of from 1ft height but that time there was not any dent. my worry is will it give any prop in future or its just a cosmetic issue but in performance it wont give any problems. it happened an hr back & i am very upset for this misshandling.

I dropped a MBP and dented that same corner, though it wasn't one of the unibody MBPs:
It worked flawlessly for a month, then suddenly died.  I put it to sleep one day, then 5 minutes later remembered something I had forgotten to do, opened it back up...  and nothing.  It never worked again.  Repairs would have been well over $1,000, and would not have been covered by the warranty or by AppleCare (if I had bought it).  I opted to just buy a new Mac instead.
Now, just because that happened to me does not mean that's what will happen to you.  However, you do need to prepare yourself for that possibility.

  • The monitor on my 17in MCP unibody is off center???

It was purchased in 2010 by my brother and he gave it to me. It's still under warranty. The top doesn't align with the unibody when closed, and there is no sign of any dents or scratches indicating ever being dropped, so I assumed it could be a manufacturing problem since it's only off by like 2mm and on one side. The screen is fine, the graphics look great, but it's kinda annoying me that it won't close straight.. What should i do? Will Apple repair this under the 1 yr warranty?

  • What Hard Suit / Case for the MBP17 Unibody?

    Hi all,
just got the new MBP17 unibody
Now I'm looking for a suitable Hard Suit / Case for it.
I like the Crumpler Hardsuit that is available, but I do not know whether the NEW MBP will fit in a case designed for the previous model. Especially since the mesurements have changed slightly. Any ideas?
    Thanks

I would really recommend only one, for good reason- I've hauled 5 different models of 17" Powerbooks and Macbook Pros around in a Zero Halliburton 4" Computer Case. I've had the case for 5 years of heavy usage, and the case has about 1,000,000 miles on it (and looks it!). But- the foam cutout on the interior is built for the profile of the 17" (my 17" unibody is on order, but I've measured and in spite of the larger footprint than previous 17" MBPs, it should fit fine), and my Laptops have always been in good hands within the confines of the case.
Two things have broke on the case (in addition to various dents and scratches, which give it "character")- the hinge pin is starting to come out- it came out about 2" about 2 years ago, the good news is it hasn't moved out any further. If I wasn't lazy I'd pound it back in.
The second issue is the arm that holds each side of the case together has broke- this is actually a blessing, because now I can fold the case flat and don't have to remove it when going through airport security in the USA. Saves many cringe-worthy moments that I have as i watch my laptop shuffle around in a plastic bin.
It's a timeless, always-in-style (or decidedly retro) look. IMHO, it makes Tumi or Brenthaven look like a joke. I am in technical sales and, as much as we'd like to think that image means nothing, walking in with the ZH, and then taking out whatever late-model MBP I happen to have makes a professional, serious statement about yourself and the product you are representing.
(Here's hoping that my new Unibody and On-Order Gonna-Be-Hackintoshed Dell Mini 9 will both fit into the case).

  • 15" MacBook Pro Unibody Replacement

I dropped my MacBook Pro today and the unibody assembly/casing is dented.  Does anyone know of a good parts store for replacement parts?
    Thanks.

Yes, it is purely cosmetic.  My MBP appears to be functioning properly otherwise.  I have looked everywhere online to price the parts with no success.

  • Does applecare cover for dents?

My girlfriend recently dropped my MacBook Pro (but to make up for it I smashed her iPhone, oops) and it now has two dents in the top of the lid. My laptop is still under warranty, would I be able to get it repaired/replaced?

You sound like the past victim of such a tactic, Courcoul ...
On the contrary, had no sweet young thing on hand to persuade the Apple staff. Happened twice. First, the infamous peeling topcase on a TiBook, that not only affected the area around the keyboard, but also the rear lid covering the ports. Later, on a non-unibody MBP whose key caps literally went bare and lost all paint, hence no more lettering. Both cases verdict was "cosmetic, not covered".
But at least never had to deal with an angry damsel hellbent on throwing the Mac out the window....
