DEP Data Execution Protection prevents itunes from working?

Hi
I'm hoping for some help as DEP on Windows XP keeps closing itunes despite the changing the settings on DEP in the windows control panel (i.e. whether itunes is ticked or unticked in the appropriate panel). I do not think I have any quicktime programmes installed which seems to have related issues. Advice much appreciated, Thank you in advance.

Doublechecking. If you install the latest version of the QuickTime Player, does that clear up the iTunes DEP?

  • After itunes is closed i get warning saying data execution protection closed itunes

after I exit itunes I get a warning saying data execution protection cloesed itunes, this is after it has already shut down. I tried to exclude itunes from DEP but did not work. Thanks

I don't have a solution for you, but it seems that if you visit the iTunes Store at some point while iTunes is open then you don't get that error when it closes.

  • Data Execution Prevention preventing iTunes from working

I have iTunes 8.0.2.20 running on Windows Server 2008 SP1. Whenever I plug in my iPod Nano, Data Execution Prevention (DEP) shuts down iTunes. I can't create an exception for iTunes in DEP since it gives the following error message:
+"This program must run with data execution protection (DEP) enabled. You cannot turn off DEP for this program."+
Any ideas on what might be causing this issue?

No, i do not have quickTime player.
I have tried to close dep off for iTunes but failed to do so as i got a msg that iTunes can't work without Dep in execution data prevention.

  • S5 Caused Windows DEP (Data Execution Protection) to trigger and close S5.

Now this was odd. Not sure what caused it, but I was in the forums here and I simply clicked on the Apple Logo at the top to go back to the main Apple page and it started to load the page and popped up a Windows DEP error.
I have never seen Windows actually do that before, but I did tell it to send the error report to MS. I suppose it is possible that MS has not updated the DEP filters to fully recognize S5 as a valid app.
Was just really interesting and I thought I would post about it to see if anyone else has seen this issue.

That is a bit odd, Richard. Don't think I ever saw any DEP trouble reported for Safari 4.0.4 or 4.0.5.
When you installed your Safari 5, did you also update your QuickTime to 7.6.6?
(Some DEP errors can be related to applications other than iTunes, QuickTime or Safari dropping QuickTime componentry into non-standard locations on a PC. The DEP errors kick in when QuickTime "proper" gets updated, the "older" componentry in the non-standard locations remains on the PC, and the mix of QuickTime componentry versions makes everything turn to custard.)

  • DEP (Date Execution Prevention) Closed iTunes due to security reason

I just bought a new laptop (SONY SR) operated with Window Vista. My laptop never run iTunes since I installed it. I tried uninstall and reinstall again n again, but it just doesn't work.
A screen appeared and say that iTunes stopped working, DEP (Data Execution Prevention) has closed iTunes due to security reason.
How do I off that "DEP"? Thanks!!!

Hi, I just got this problem solved. Hope it helps.
You don't have to turn off DEP or reinstall any program.
The only thing you need to do is associate your Quicktime files ONLY to QuickTime player.
When you open QuickTime it will automatically pop up a window to ask you if you want to fix file association. The answer is positive of course.
If it still doesn't work maybe you could uninstall some codec / media players which associate with QuickTime files.

  • DEP preventing Itunes from automatic sync with ipod

I can't find anything about this anywhere so you might be able to help me!
I changed the podcast automatic sync settings on my ipod and for some inexplicable reaon, the ipod (160gb classic) started sncing manually with itunes. (i'm pretty sure i didn't touch the manual tick box!)
Everytime I unclick the manual snyc button on the ipod page, itunes shuts down and i get a message saying that data execution protection has prevented changes. I have attempted to change the DEP setting for itunes, but I get a message saying that i'm not authorised/ not safe to do so. i am logged in as an administrator.
Anyone have any idea what to do next!?!

I basically was unselecting "manually manage music and videos", ok-ed the standard do you really want to do that box and the itunes shut down.
Windows problems/solutions would then tell me about itunes not having enough DEP priviliges.
Unfortunately I'm not able to tell you what happens, as I have just tried it again to get the exact errors and it has worked beautifully!
no shutdowns, no problems. I haven't done anything differently.
Problem reports and solutions don't mention the DEP thing but say fault with stackhash_fd600.
Obviously posting on this forum in itself is enough to solve problems!

  • Paradox concerning DEP (Data Execution Prevention) when opening LabVIEW

When I try to launch LabVIEW, DEP (Data Execution Prevention) prevents me from opening it. I have followed instructions and attempted to make an exception for LabVIEW, but I get a message saying the following:
"This program must run with data execution protection (DEP) enabled.
You cannot turn off DEP for this program."
It seems that I need this "DEP" program to run LabVIEW, but at the same time it is keeping me from running it. Help would be very much apprecaited.
    Thanks in advance!
    Cailin

    Hello Cailin,
The Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature included in
modern Microsoft Windows operating systems that is intended to prevent
malicious code from running on the system.
Here are two methods to fixing this problem:
    Method 1:
Follow these steps to add an exception for the program from the DEP error message:
When you receive the error message click Change Settings.
Select the check box next to the program, and then click Apply.
When you are prompted to restart your computer, click OK two times, and then restart your system.
    Method 2:
You can also add an exception for the program by using System Properties in Control Panel. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
Click the Advanced tab, click Performance, and then click Settings.
In Performance Options, click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Add.
In the Open dialog box, locate and then click the program.
Click Open, click Apply, and then click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click OK.

  • Itunes with Vista, Data Execution Protection settings closes Itunes.

I star-up Itunes.  It launches correctly.  Once the Itunes window is open and my music librairy appears, Microsoft closes Itunes.  The final message says its the Data Execution Protection settings that forced it to close.  I try and change the settings by turning the DEP off for Itunes, but it says that it can't run without it and refuses to disable it for Itunes.
Called Apple, they say it's a Microsoft problem...
Called Microsoft, they say it's an incompatibility problem with Apple and pointed me here.
    Any suggestions?

After seeing Bill-Taylor's response, I decided to try alexloise's suggestion to see if it would solve the relatively minor Vista/DEP on iTunes shutdown issue. The short answer seems to be "no," at least in my case. The Microsoft link that turingtest2 posted gave me a big headache, but did not show me how to disable AutoRun for the CD/DVD drive.  (If I understand correctly, other types of AutoRun should already be disabled if all Important and Recommended Windows updates have been installed.) So I tried the registry edit suggested in this article: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2254345,00.asp. Only then did I see the iTunes notification mentioned by alexloise:
Unfortunately, I continue to see the familiar DEP notifications when exiting iTunes 11.4.

  • HT201413 Why does Data Execution Protection or lack thereof keep shutting down iTunes

Why does Data Execution Protection or lack thereof keep shutting down iTunes?

Sounds like you have a battry issue but don't want to believe it.
If a car was running fine on one tank of gas, then you filled it up with another tank of gas and it began to run funny, one might suspect that tank of gas. But let's just say coincidence blew a valve-- would you think the new tank of gas was the culprit?
BUT WAIT!! It just might have been! The gas could have been of higher octane and put more more strain on the valves; you know, like going from 87 octane (OS6) to 93 octane (OS7) and showing you the engine was on the edge of compromise.
Sometimes you have to go with common sense. If everything else is ruled out, it must be the battery. And if it runs fine one moment in OS6 but immediately ***** in OS7, I'd believe my battery was suspect-- though comfy-- in OS6 but the OS7 showed its true power.
Moreover, if you had the answer-- or didn't want to believe someone's more competent advice-- why did you even call?  You've already shown that you don't know much when you asked if you could go backwards after setting up the new OS as a new phone.
Additonally, if you're such the know-it-all, but yourself the $29 battery and put it in yourself. It's a piece of cake.

  • I have recently had to have my PC software re-installed due to a virus attack. When I have re installed iTunes my computer keeps closing it with a message that DEP (Data Execution Programme) will not allow iTunes to function. How can I resolve this?

I have recently had a full re-install of my computers software however once I have re installed iTunes it wont allow it to stay open and a message window reads iTunes has been closed due to DEP (Data Execution Programme). How can I resolve this issue?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes) then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

  • Data Execution Protection and CHM?

Has anyone else had trouble with CHMs being shut down by XP's
Data Execution Protection program? We have XP Service Pack 2 on
several machines, and it's never happened before. I just got a new
machine with XP SP2 and it won't run a CHM. I had to go into the
DEP window (under Control Panel - System - etc.,) to specifically
    tell DEP to run CHMs.
That's fine for me, but what about clients and partners who
    try to run the CHM?
    Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. It has happened to two CHMs -- one
compiled on my new XP machine, and one that was compiled on my old
Windows 2000 machine. The files only fail to run on my Windows XP
machine -- the two CHMs run fine on other Windows XP machines.
For one CHM, it isn't actually the DEP that stops the CHM
from running -- it's just the browser saying that it can't find (or
execute) hh.exe. Here's the error message:
    hh.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x4080ded1" referenced memory at
"0x4080ded1". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
    OK
For the other CHM, it's definitely the DEP that doesn't want
to run hhlauncher.exe -- but it takes at least a few minutes of
browsing in the CHM before DEP shuts it down. And as I say, DEP
doesn't shut it down at all on other machines -- just mine.
This is the first time I've had these problems. We're not
using a new version of RoboHelp, and no one here has this problem.
    Any other suggestions?
