Deploy win7 and linux image with MDT

We have been using mdt 2010 for our deployment in the last few months. It works perfectly. Now i am facing a bit problem, our organization decide to include a linux image into the standard one. Is there anyway we can deploy this linux image in mdt?

Sure you can, but it's not supported (at all) by Microsoft... :)
It's been a while, but I have tested two ways of doing this
1. Have a custom task sequence create a 50 MB fat partition, make it bootable using syslinux, copy the linux boot image to c:\, copy the kickstart script, create the syslinux.cfg, reboot, allow the kickstart setup to do the rest...
2. Have a custom task sequence use a disk image utility like dd for windows to just dump a cloned image...
I like option 1 the most...
Please don't consider dualbooting, its a beating, it just adds additional complexity... If they really need Linux and Windows on the same box, run Linux in a VM (or the other way around).

• Deploy win7 via ConfigMgr12 r2 with secondary keyboard

Hi All
My infrastructure is SCCM 2012 r2 with MDT 2013 installed on Server 2012 r2 virtual machine in Hyper-V.
I want to create image of WIN7 with English interface and default English keyboard and Hebrew as a secondary language.
If you configure this setting before SYSPREP during the CAPTURE deleted this definition.
And if during the DEPLOY set the keyboard so the keyboard Hebrew selected as a first language,
And I want that English will be the first language and second language Hebrew.
I'd love your help
Ran

Hi,
I have to say that you can use the English interface when deployment, it can be set at the WinPE phase by a component, script should be like this:
As for the second keyboard language or input method, I think you should configure this at the client image that you want to deploy to other computers:

• Creating Windows 8.1 master image with MDT 2013,cannot capture .WIM

I am having an issue with creating a master image with Windows 8.1 and MDT 2013.
I have followed extensive tutorials on how to create a master image using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit. my goal is to have a fully configured windows 8.1 image which I can deploy through Windows Deployment Services. I have been relatively successful thus far,
except for one issue I have run into, which is successfully capturing this image as a .WIM.
I have successfully created a task sequence and the task sequence is able to run all the way through until the final step. Essentially the task sequence is supposed to install Windows and Office, then suspend the task sequence to allow me to make customisations
to the start screen and desktop background, and I simply click resume task sequence, and the task sequence should sysprep reboot and capture the machine image as a .WIM file.
the task sequence is able to sysprep the machine, but upon rebooting it boots into out of box experience, and does not create a wim file. I receive an error saying: "cannot find script file C:\ltibootstrap.Vbs" after the machine completes OOBE
I am using Windows Server 2012 r2, creating my Master machine image using hyper-v, and my master image is running Windows 8.1.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure about the sequence of steps here. Try taking your captured.wim file and deploying it using MDT again, or at least to another machine. MDT sometimes leaves extra files around on the captured machine, so simply rebooting it may not get a accurate
test results.
IF you are getting the ltibootstrap.vbs it is most likely because there is a stray unattend.xml file somewhere in your image that is looking for this file. Crack open your Wim file and search for any unattend.xml files.

• DUAL BOOT windows 7 and linux HELP with Current info on BIOS, MBR vs GPT, etc

I have a feeling this should be easier than what I'm making it. Please educate me on Lenovo's BIOS Setup menus, etc.
I have installed easyBCD in Windows 7, and plan to use it to set up my new boot menu with Linux Mint (and possibly other distros).
I am using a live DVD. I inserted the DVD and went into SETUP and selected to boot off the DVD drive. It started to boot into Linux and all was going well.
However, I realized that I had not checked on the Secure features (Secure Boot, EFI). So I shutdown again and went into BIOS. I went to the SECURITY menu and Disabled UEFI. Then I disabled Secure boot.
Tried to boot off the DVD and couldn't get anywhere. Kept putting me back into the window to select the boot device over and over again. THought I'd ruined my machine
Anyway, finally stumbled upon STARTUP menu, and put it into EFI Legacy, and I was able to get back into Windows 7.
Obviously before I pursue this further, I need some educaiton on your MENUS, Lenovo and EFI/Secure Boot.
I have a feeling that I can probably now install the Linux but want to make sure my settings are correct before I pursue.
Thanks, Kim
Moderator note: this thread gets more Linux-flavored with each post Moved from the "T" board to the Linux board.

Hi, thanks for ans. Your specs are almost identical to my T530 ,which I should have listed. The only diff is
I have an i7 35something processor. Same intel card, RAM and HDD, not that that should matter I'm guessing.
I purposely avoided the Nvidia card because of all the heaadaches with Nvidia.
I have to teach a class tomorrow and I need to clean up my notes. (Definitely not computer related...LOL.) I don't want to be stressed out about this during class, so I plan to wait to attempt a new install tomorrow afternoon.
What I have done is find out some more info about dual booting with windows 7. I went in to windows 7 to shrink the C: partiition and it said I'd have to reserve at least 220 GB for MS! Not what I wanted; I don't really care a thing for MS. I was born and raised on Unix and Linux; I never really fiddled with MS after the demise of MS-DOS during my college days.
Given that, and the fact that I'd lose half my 500 GB HDD to the Borg, I may just chuck the entire dual boot thing and just load Linux on it.
If you say you're running Linux on it just fine, that would be a great encouragement. No HW problems at all? Everything working fine? Which distro are you using?
I plan to test Mint, Fedora, PCLinuxOS, Mageira (sp?), saybahon (sp again?), Debian Wheezy, and even Pear, LOL. I'll keep trying till I find a distro to run on my Lenovo T530, but I'm guessing all of 'em should do okay.
I have Lubuntu I could give a spin, as well and Crunchbang and Bodhi, but they're all 32 bit. (I have an antique Dell desktop that I still use down in my woman cave.)

• How can I fix blank spots and missing images with firefox

I type in pch.com for instance and the image doesn't appear and when I hit begin It shows me spaces for names address etc. but there is no submit box. I can click where it should be and it works. On yahoo themes, All the squares are white. If I point to it, It says the color but doesn't show it.

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their colors and that you haven't enabled High Contrast in the Accessibility settings.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Website_colors_are_wrong
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Websites_look_wrong
If images are missing then check that you aren't blocking images from some domains.
*Check the permissions for the domain in the current tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
*Check that images are enabled: Tools > Options > Content: [X] Load images automatically
*Check the exceptions in "Tools > Options > Content: Load Images > Exceptions"
*Check the "Tools > Page Info > Media" tab for blocked images (scroll through all the images with the cursor Down key).
If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "Block Images from..." then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.
Make sure that you do not block third-party images, the permissions.default.images pref should be 1.

There are also extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and security software (firewall, anti-virus) that can block images.

• Capture system image with MDT

Hello everyone,
I want to create a Windows 7 installation disc that will allow me to have, immediately after installation, a system updated with the latest hotfixes, installed programs and all the settings I want already selected in the system.
Now, I used MDT 2013 on x64 Windows 8.1 Pro to create a DeploymentShare Windows 7 Pro x86, including drivers, applications and various hotfixes, once I create the image of Windows PE, through which I install the above system from DeploymentShare, all row smoothly,
but I have any dubious:
1) Once the system is installed, they log me in as Administrator, why?
2) If I log in as Administrator, then I have to run the sysprep.exe / generalize / oobe before delivering the computer to an imaginary customer?
3) If I want to make changes to the settings of the user (for example to make sure that hidden folders see by default after installation or arrange the icons on the desktop as I will ensure that the end user see it exactly so) I have to use the CopyProfile?
4) If yes, at what stage should I use the CopyProfile? Specifying an unattend.xml during sysprep.exe on point 2? Or maybe I recapture system image after install it and use the file *.wim with a different unattend.xml, that is, in practice doing two laps of
installation?
5) Once I captured the system image, when I try to install it, the system logs me in again with Administrator account instead of OOBE, why?
I want to do this final procedure on the end user PC:
1) Put the DVD (or USB) of this modified Windows
2) Install Windows automatically with all applications, hotfixes and settings
3) Once Windows is installed, I install in audit mode all drivers for that PC and sysprep /oobe it
4) Give the PC to the client
Thank you in advance!
P.S: sorry for my bad english

1. By design, a hold out from the days when MDT also supported XP.
2. By design, images need to be syspreped if they are to be applied to other machines.
3. Typically I do *NOT* recommend making changes to HKCU during imaging, instead settings should be applied using GPO or other method. CopyProfile can work as a last resort.
4. CopyProfile is applied during "Specialize" as per documentation, not during sysprep.
5. MDT enables the local administrator account for use in MDT deployments later. Check out the unattend64.xml template in the MDT install directory:
<RunSynchronous>
<RunSynchronousCommand wcm:action="add">

EnableAdmin

<Order>1</Order>
cmd /c net user Administrator /active:yes
</RunSynchronousCommand>
<RunSynchronousCommand wcm:action="add">

UnfilterAdministratorToken

<Order>2</Order>
cmd /c reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v FilterAdministratorToken /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
</RunSynchronousCommand>
<RunSynchronousCommand wcm:action="add">

disable user account page

<Order>3</Order>
reg add HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\OOBE /v UnattendCreatedUser /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
</RunSynchronousCommand>
</RunSynchronous>
This works for MDT deployment later, but if you have a custom process, you may need to adjust the system.

font-family: Lucida Sans Unicode, Lucida Grande, sans-serif;
color: #CC6;
text-decoration: none;
padding-top: 10px;
padding-right: 12px;
padding-bottom: 10px;
padding-left: 12px;
line-height: 19px;
display: block;
Normally setting a height on a container which you have no control over is not a good idea. The text can be enlarged and that will throw everything off. The best way is to set no heights at all but use padding and make sure your background image is flexible enough to accommodate the text enlargement.
ul.MenuBarHorizontal a {
padding: 12px 12px;
display: block;

• Unable to drag and drop images with manual sort in CS2 bridge

I've had CS2 for several years now but for some reason, just never really needed to do a manual sort. Now that I DO need to, it doesn't seem to be working. I have the view set for manual and no matter what kind of working space I use, the program does not allow me to drag and drop the thumbnails into different positions. All I get is that circle with a diagonal line through it, showing me that what I'm trying isn't going to work.
Any ideas?
Windows XP
2G of ram
Bridge version 1.0.4.6 (104504)
CS2

DUUUUUUUDE! IT'S WORKING NOW!!!!
When you originally asked, "What happens if you click on an image and move it to another folder?", I didn't really understand what you were talking about because I almost never have my workspace set up in a way that the folders are showing. I always hide them. So I didn't really understand what you were saying. Just a few minutes ago, I realized that that is what you were asking so I opened up the folder area and tried dragging thumbs into different folders and saw that it does work.
So then, because of you mentioning that blue line and me know that I did see the blue line on occasion. I went back over into the thumbnails to find out if I always got the blue line or if it was a hit or miss thing. I couldn't believe my eyes when all of the sudden I saw that I no longer was getting that circle with the line through it, and low and behold, the thumbnail dropped right into position like it is supposed to!!!!
The thing is, I don't know what I've learned from this. I thought, "well, what is different?" The only thing that I can think of is that I now have the folders showing in my workspace so I wondered if that was the secret but I just now hid the folders again like I usually do and the drag and drop into position is STILL WORKING!!!
All I can figure is that somehow, dragging and dropping a thumbnail into a folder like that for the first time, triggered something so that I can now drag and drop among the thumbnail positions? Not sure. All I know is that for some reason, IT'S WORKING NOW!
Now, for the second important part, I wonder if I drag and drop everything into the order that I want and then select all of the files and drag them into a new folder, will they stay in that order? I need to go experiment with that.
If you hadn't kept at it and in turn had me keep trying stuff, it would have never happened because I had pretty much given up.
Thanks Curt!
You da man!!!

• Adding and /exporting/ image with Metadata problem

i have been able to add metadata to an image i need to publish but for some reason i am having a problem figuring out how to export this metada with the image.
i see i have an option to export as original or as version. does this affect whether metada has been exported?
also, can i export as PNG as get the metadata in the image or do i have to use something like jpg for some reason?
finally, is there a way to verify that the metadata has been exported along with the image to my desktop before i upload to the web?! it seems really sort of odd to have to re-import the image into Aperture to test the exported image to see if the metadata is there. i mean, i am glad i just did this with the image and metadata that i exported b/c the metadata is not there but it seems like this could be simpler.
TIA

What export preset are you using? Did you check the box to include metadata. This is all in the manual. PNG has poor support for metadata so you're best sticking to Jpeg. You can check for the metadata in Preview, or an of a 100 other photo apps.

Error 0x7b is something different. IT means that you don't have the correct storage driver installed. Are you running an IHCA? To get around this most IT professionals will create their images on *virtual machines* like Hyper-V. YOu won't need to load any
special drivers, and even better the image you create will be pretty clean (as long as it's a generic image). Don, It's not clear from *where* you received the 7b, Was it within Windows XP? Within WinPE, or somewhere else? Be specific.
Additionaly, the "Sysprep and Capture" Task Sequence Template is great if you *already* have the image created just the way you want. However, if you are starting from scratch, I would recommend looking into using the *full* "CLient" deployment Task Sequence
Template. That will allow you to deploy the OS, install applications, sysprep *AND* capture all in one automated process.

• OH MY GOD HELP!!! lots of black event thumbnails and lost images with (?)

I opened iPhoto today and over HALF of my photos events are BLACK! when i go deeper into that event, the thumbnails show (phew), but if i choose an image to enlarge i get a big FAT ( ? ) for an image!!!! WHAT IS GOING ON??? are they gone? i'm freakin out, i've guarded these nearly 4,000 missing photos for years! I have backups of most, but what gives with the black events and question marks?? do i have to delete an event and re-import it?? help!

Experianced this problem just yesterday. After rebuilding the iPhoto database and all the other options to try and repair it I followed directions to recreate the library which solved the issue. All of the created events will still be retained using this method but I believe any edits made to photos might be lost. Although if you import the modified folder in the same manner as before you should have your edited copies again but I don't think you'll be able to revert to original on them.
First move your existing iPhoto library from your Pictures folder to the desktop.
Start iPhoto and tell it to create a new library.
Ctrl-click your iPhoto library on your desktop and show package contents (might be listed as something else but don't have access to my Mac to check).
Drag the originals folder from there into the iPhoto window and it should import your photos.
At that point all should be back as they were. If you've edited a bunch then drag the modified folder in just like you did for the original folder. Then you should see both your edited and the original photos side by side in your library.
Try the other options first but if nothing works then this certainly does. Even if it's not the best way to do things.

• Copy and paste images altered using Instant Alpha

I have put many hours cropping and altering images with Instant Aplha. I want to save these images so I can use them in other files.
I have tried to copy and paste but i get nothing. I have trying dragging them but that does't work either.
What am I missing??

As long as you remain in Keynote Instant Alpha remains whether dragging slides or images. If you want to use the changed images in other applications I doubt that it will remain because you are not altering the original image. For a 'permanent' solution you need to use Photoshop or similar.
