Deploying Applications Using Task Sequence

Hi, can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong. I am trying to deploy some App-V 5.0 prerequisites using a task sequence but for whatever reason the TS just will not execute the install application group I created (screenshot below).
The OSD part of the TS installs correctly without any errors but the applications just don't get installed.

Basically I have created four applications. The App-V Client has two dependencies which are the .NET framework and Windows Powershell. The Powershell application has one dependency which the .NET framework application. Those are the only conditions set.
The App-V client application is only deployed to the collection and not the DP (Do I need to deploy them to the DP as well?) Yes, I do have network connectivity and the ConfigMgr Client agent was successfully installed.

  • Reasons for not deploying applications using Task Sequence

    Hi guys!
Could you provide me with some reasons why I shouldn't be using Task Sequences to deploy all of my applications? I like the idea that I can deploy multiple applications and packages at the same time, as well as being able to perform other tasks in the same
Task Sequence if needed. I also really like the progress bar window which shows end user the company and name of application being installed.
The SCCM Unleashed 2012 book mentions that while this is an available option it's not a good practice because "applications are meant to be state-based". Would someone be able to elaborate on that statement?
Is using Task Sequences for deploying applications generally a bad practice that I should try to avoid?

    Hi,
here is a description for state based:
Depending on the deployment purpose you have specified in the deployment type of an application, System Center 2012 Configuration Manager periodically checks that the state of the application is the same as its purpose. For example, if an
application’s deployment type is specified as Required, Configuration Manager reinstalls the application if it has been removed. Only one deployment type can be created per application and collection pair.
If you deploy your applications by using task sequence you bypass this feature. You will install the application. but after this initial installation there will be no further check for the app to be still present on device.
You can use task sequences, but should be aware of the features you bypass in this scenario.
    Regards

  • Deployment Workbench Adding Applications Using Task Sequence

I am trying to figure out how to add applications in Deployment Workbench. My biggest issue is what to put in the command line to get it to work. Someone else created folders with everything that would needed along with a batch file. Now I am trying to
figure out how to get that to work in Deployment Workbench. I am also trying to figure out how to then get it to work in Task Sequence since it is not currently working the way I have tried. Thanks.

    Hi,
Here is a guidance for you:

  • Deploy Application During Task Sequence

Hello I have created about 10 packages to be part of our Windows 7 deployment using installshield. The packages install ok manually and through SCCM Client Center. However when I add them to my Task Sequence I get 1603 errors??? Is it a permissions issue.
Some of my packages work some don't?
    Here's the log error
Unmatched exit code 1603 is considered and execution failure.

Hi here is the log, any help appreciated. I think its permissions issue but not sure what I can do to remedy it?

  • 2012R2 Application installation steps after deploying OS from Task sequence is slow after applying hotfix 2910552

We are currently using CM2012r2 for Endpoint protection, and in trying to save licensing costs, I have been given the task of doing imaging and application deployment through CM as well... everything started off well... noticed that imaging took a lot longer
than I remembered when I used CM2007 at my previous employer. Found we needed hotfix 2910522 and what took an hour to download now only takes 5 minutes (yay!) Then started other strange issues.  Mostly the fact that in the task sequence, the install application
blocks (we have 3 with 4-8 apps each) suddenly got really slow to execute. (boo!)  The application blocks eventually finish, but take about 5 hours and only the last block actually installs.    For example: 7zip takes 15 minutes to "install"
but since it isn't in the last block, it doesn't in fact install on the system.
so here is what I know so far:
Updated the boot image after applying the hotfix
Added the hotfix to the Windows and configmgr setup step command line to install the patch
Verified that all applications install correctly outside of the task sequence.
Created a new task sequence just in case the hotfix messed something up.
    here is what I've noticed:
Only happens on workstations that have been imaged previously by CM (even if I remove the machine from AD and CM)
    New machines image just dandy
not hardware specific (tested on 5 different laptop models and 3 desktop models)
workstations that have the issue, when finished, only installed the applications from the last block (4 apps) and none from the previous 2 blocks (16 applications)
If imaged new (not previously known) it installs the client correctly and it checks in, ones with the issue are in internet only mode and don't see the PKI cert for the machine, and will not check in.
Things I've checked, double checked, verified, and done:
All applications have the box for "allow this application to be installed from the Install Application task sequence action..."
applications are on all distribution points
    Distribution points are healthy
One MP/DP was complaining about how it couldn't access a SMS folder.  uninstalled the roles, let it sit over the weekend, reinstalled this morning
Verified that the servers were on 10Gb full and were not throwing error on the line
Antivirus scanning was not scanning the store (used the built in template for scep)
Next steps that I am going to try:
create a new task sequence and split up install application blocks to only have single applications in them
recreate the boot wim for the media
     Thanks in advance

So this issue of yours is in B&C -task sequence? You're using capture CD for capturing, why? Why not automate the build entirely.
    I'd suggest you add this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2775511/en-us to your BUILD image (either online of offline, in the WinPE -phase), it fixes many WMI related problems.
After you've done your golden .wim, deploy it to your clients.
We don't do a build and capture because certain applications require handling on our part. Management has said it needs to be a certain way, therefore this is how we have to build it.  (mostly settings, and views that can't be controlled through registry,
Group Policy, etc.)  There are users that if they have to click on an accept button or it isn't the right color, or they want a different icon in their lab, then they go to the top and it comes back down to us, and our lives become miserable.
We create the image in audit mode, capture it using boot media, and sequence in things that are updated constantly (flash, shockwave, java, etc.) through the task sequence.
in relation to that KB, why would it work on new machines but not ones that have been touched before?

  • SCCM 2012 - Maintenance Windows Issue with Update Deployment using Task Sequence

    Hi Guys,
I have a question for you!!
We use a Task Sequence to deploy "Patch Tuesday" security fix; we use the integrated step "Install Software Update" and the Task Sequence run during Maintenance Windows (1 hour).
    We notice that the time remaining is not recalculated on every software update installation occur (http://blogs.technet.com/b/csloyan/archive/2010/10/24/maintenance-window-calculations-explained.aspx);
    it's correct?
The formula indicated in the link above is not considered in this type of software update deployment (Install Software Update task sequence step)?
    Thanks a lot.
    David

    Hi,
    Any update?
Is the time remaining recalculated after each update is installed when using the Software Update Group directly as Torsten said?
    Best Regards,
    Joyce

  • Install Applications in task sequence - fails if there is no source

I found an odd issue in SCCM 2012 SP1.  I have many applications that install perfectly when deployed.  There is no source for the application because it is a network based install, and needs to be.  If I try to add the application to the
"Install Application" method in a task sequence, it looks successful.  But then re-edit the task sequence and it will tell you there is an issue with the "Install Application" method.  The app will not install when you run the
task sequence either.  If you then add a content folder to the application, it works like a charm.
In the meantime, I am providing a dummy content location for these apps so I can get things running.  But has anyone run into this?  Seems so odd that task sequences don't like apps without content.

These are Autodesk application installs.  When the deployments are built, they are built to a network location and INI files are generated with paths in them.  In the past, I manually edited these files to use local relative pathing, so they
could be used as content, downloaded to the system, and executed locally by SMS.  I found issues with install Source locations though (yes, even with using SCCM's built in source control), that made me really want to change the INI's back to network locations,
so now there is no more need for content.
I will have to look into the DCR.

  • Can we Deploy VM using task sequnce on ESXi servers using SCCM?

    Hi Team,
I want to deploy windows 7(64 bit) on a VMware ESxi server by using SCCM task sequence .Please tell me can we image it using SCCM? If not please tell me what are the prerequisite for this.
Also tell me what is SCVMM (Virtual Machine Manager)? Is this used for deploying virtual machines? I don't have SCVMM, I only have SCCM 2012.
    Thanks

Couple of ways to interpret this.
If you just want to know if you can use PXE deployments on VMs like VMWare the answer is yes, but you must use the e1000 legacy adapter as the para-virtualization VMNet adapters don't not support PXE deployment.  Similar is true of Hyper-V BTW.
If you _also_ want to deploy the VM itself then we are coordinating SCCM with other tools like Orchestrator, SMA, maybe even the Microsoft WAP (Windows Azure Pack).  It's
absolutely doable, but it's no longer a pure SCCM question.  We are now talking about self-service workflows and all the wonderful steps that entails.
Bonus points:  Now VMware has decided vmdk or bust, but both Xen and MS have decided  VHDs are cool ... and if that back-end storage is NAS head with SMB support you can use SCCM to offline patch your templates, too.

  • Error while deploying application using enterprise manager website and dcmctl

    Hi,
I am trying to deploy a huge ear file using enterprise manager website of Oracle 9iAs Rel 2.
The deployment fails with the following error.
Deployment failed: Nested exception Root Cause: null; nested exception is: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError. null; nested exception is: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
We are able to deploy the same ear file using stand-alone container. We are planning for deployment in few days to go it live. Pls suggest what could be the problem.
    Hardware Used:-
DellServer Intel P3 dual processor 1.2GHz
    1GB RAM
    2GB virtual memory,
    40GB free hard-drive.
Apart from 9ias enterprise edition, this system has Oracle database also on it. But the database is not being used at all by anyone.
No other software is installed on the system
    Software:-
    Windows 2000 Server sp2
Oracle 9ias Release 2 Enterprise Edition (Installed J2EE and Webcache)
    Oracle 8i Database 8.1.6.0.0
    Size of application:-
130 EJBs (107 CMP + remaining Session Beans)
    1700 JSPs
    3 servlets
    Packaged properly into jar,war,ear structure.
the size of ear file is about 13MB.
I tried using dcmctl but still got the following error.
Oracle 8i database is running but noone is using it except that this application uses it.
    Pls help

Try to fragment the 'ear' in less than 64k blocks or don't transmit as long raw.
Please let me know if this works.

    Hi.
    Thanks for the additional info.
I found 2 similar issues with similar stack traces for WLS 6.1 sp2. One of the issues we could not reproduce, and in the
end the customer reinstalled WLS and the problem went away. The other issue was found internally and is not currently
active. I'm not 100% sure your situation is identical to one of these.
Therefor I suggest the following course of action:
    1. Since this is an intermittant problem try reinstalling WLS. If that doesn't help then...
    2. open a case with support. It may not be a major issue, but we need to be sure of this.
    Hope this helps,
    Michael

  • What is the security context when deploying application using SCCM 2012?

As far as i know when using Group Policy the software is always installed under SYSTEM security context. However i cannot find any information related to SCCM 2012 (and deploying applications) security context.
Also is there a difference in doing "Install for User" or "Install for Device/System"?
    Thanks

Thanks. Just to confirm that if you use Group Policy and you Publish the msi for user when the user install it from Add/Remove Programs it is still going to be executed in SYSTEM security context?
And while we are on this topic - is the above (about the security context in SCCM 2012) written anywhere in some official MS web page?
Not sure about the context for Intellimirror, but for ConfigMgr it's as Ronnie and Torsten stated. This may be documented somewhere, not sure. Not everything is documented though -- in fact, I'd say less than 25% (probably less than 10%) of everything
to be known about ConfigMgr is officially documented. Note that this is the same for any product -- there simply are far too many permutations and possibilities to document them all.

  • Deploy application using ant script vs shell script

    Hi,
I work with OAS 10.1.2 and I'm using shell script with dcmctl command to deploy EAR into OC4J but I know that ant script do the same things. I want to know if my choice is good or is it better to use ant script ?
    Regards

    This is difficult to decide.
When you have just a few ear files you deploy once in a while a shell script might be sufficient. When developing more complex systems you should use ant as this is easier to maintain.

  • Applications Installed through task sequence not showing up in Software Center

In the task sequence we use for our OSD Windows 7 machine build, we have Custom-Install Application steps which install a number of of our Applications.  Each of these Applications has the "Allow this application to be installed from the Install
Application task sequence action without being deployed" checkbox checked.  All of the Applications have the following properties set:
    Installation behavior: Install for system
Logon requirement: Whether or not a user is logged in
    Installation program visibility: Hidden
When a machine is built using this task sequence, all of the Applications install successfully - they show up in Control Panel\Programs and Features, and they run correctly. However, none of them show up in the Software Center. I'm not seeing anything in
any of the logs that indicates a problem, and the Software Center remains empty even after running all the client evaluation cycle actions
Interestingly, if I add a couple of the newly build machines to a collection, then target deployments for the already installed Applications to that collection, after running the Machine Policy Retrieval and Evaluation Cycle the Applications immediately
show up in Software Center as installed.
Does anyone know if Applications installed through a task sequence do not show up in the Software Center by default, or could you give me some troubleshooting tips if this is not normal?
    Thanks for any suggestions!
    SCCM 2012 SP1, Single site, W7 clients

Why you deploy applications through task sequences? Task sequences are built and meant to be used with OSD, not application deployment.
To my knowledge, if you have application install step in a task sequence and you deploy that task sequence to a collection of machines, the software center on those machines only sees the task sequence itself, not the applications inside the task sequence.
If you want your applications to be shown in the software center, change the method of deploying stuff and deploy applications as they're are meant to.
