Deploying Clients via WSUS

When I search for instructions on deploying the SCCM 2012 R2 clients, I find this link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712298.aspx that basically says to create
and assign a GPO with settings pointing clients to check updates from your SCCM server.
"In the box Set the intranet update service for detecting updates, specify the name of the software update point server that you want to use and the port."
Is the SCCM client supposed to just automatically download with just those steps? That does not seem to be enough.
I created a GPO and assigned it to a few PCs and I see nothing happening.
What else do you do after that?  Do you need to "approve" the client somewhere like a WSUS Windows update?
I don't see how it finds the client installation files and deploys it with those minimal instructions.

After rebooting the client and manually checking for updates again, it sees the client available for download, but it fails to install.
The windowsupdate.log has this info:

  • Trying to deploy IE10 via WSUS... doesn't seem to work

I am trying to deploy IE 10 to my windows 7 machines using WSUS.  I have imported the update from the catalog and approved it for install in my workstations group.
I still have a hybrid environment of XP and Windows 7 - but of the 112 Windows 7 machines we've got, my goal is to get all of them to IE 10.  My WSUS says I'm at 96% installed / not applicable, but that number doesn't accurately represent what I am
    seeing.
In addition, I sat at a couple of my Windows 7 w/ IE 8 or 9 on it, and tried to force check and install (wuauclt /detectnow) and it never seems to find the IE 10 install.
I am quite certain that I am doing something wrong as I am nowhere near a WSUS expert, so I need help
    Thanks in advance,
    sb

    Hi,
Please make sure that these systems have ALL of the required prerequisites as discussed in
    KB2818833.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards, Yan Li
This will help for sure as I've made a lot of tests and if you don't have all KB from the link you gave, IE10 will not apply on computers.
For me it was only related to the following one :
    2670838 A platform update is available for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
This update provides improved features and performance in Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. It includes updates to the following DirectX components: Direct2D, DirectWrite, Direct3D, Windows Imaging Component (WIC), and Windows Advanced Rasterization
Platform (WARP). Additionally, it includes updates to the Windows Animation Manager (WAM), the XPS Document API, and the MPEG-2 Video Decoder. After you install this update, you may have to restart your computer.

  • SP2 or SP3 for App-V 5.0 Client, available via WSUS ?

Hi, does anybody know if there is intention to release SP2/SP3 for 5.0 Client, via WU/MU/WSUS channels ?
It would save us a little packaging effort if available via WSUS -> ConfigMgr  :)
I could understand if it's not going to be available, since the pre-requisites etc might be tricky to do via WUAgent...

I haven't yet cracked open the 5.0SP3 payload to see which (if any) of the pre-reqs might be in it (maybe only the VC++2013RT), but we'll probably set it all up as individual components, tied together as dependencies/requirements in an AppModel Deployment
Type, so that 5.0SP3 will detect for pre-reqs and if absent pull those down.
I'm just not yet sure if there's restarts required between the steps - if so, probably can't stack those restarts.
So it may take us a little time to deploy all that, let it soak and restart, then deploy the 5.0SP3 bits.
We're not in a crazy rush to get up to SP3 - there isn't any particular feature or fix we are desperately needing to have, so I have time to play, test and plan.

  • Client install via WSUS fails

I am having problems with clients installing the SCCM 2012 client via SUP.  It fails the install with error code 0x80004005
    Site is setup as following:
Server 1(SCCM): Primary Site Server with MP, DP, SUP roles
    Server 2(SCDB): SQL Server
WSUS is installated on Server 1 and I have a small group of clients setup pointing their WSUS client to this server and SCCM Client package is published correctly.  Clients see the published install but fail to install.
AD has been extended and Site is published to AD with SMS-Site-SHA (my site name) and SMS-MP-SHA-SCCM.DOMAIN.COM
Site boundary and boundary group have been configured and content location has been set

A Manual installation of the client works (i.e. with all the content from the Client folder) and then discovery.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
    Pete

Just updating on the progress.  So I re-installed SCCM with HTTPS and made sure the following were done:
SCCM server has https cert for IIS with Server Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1) and Client Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2)
SCCM server has cert for DP exported and installed in DP installation
SCCM client has Client auth cert
The installation gets further now but fails with the following now in the logs:

I might just revert to HTTP as it is not essential in our business case yet and I can implement HTTPS later when and if required

  • Deploying Lync 2010 client via SCCM

I am trying to distribute the new Lync client via SCCM (SCCM is not the problem here, this related to any software distribution product).
I am getting frustrated at the way the new client has been packaged - LyncSetupEval.exe in particular. Why can't Microsoft provide a simple MSI file?
I can run the LyncSetupEval.exe file with /Install /Silent, but this managed to crash OUTLOOK.exe when it runs. Also when it completes, it automatically starts communicator.exe in the SYSTEM context, meaning that unless you restart your machine, you
cannot run the Lync client in the user context.
Is anyone else having the same frustrations? I've played around with the files in the OCSetup directory, but there are of no use.

    Hi Ryan,
Happy to share. I do a simple messy batch file / VB Script combination like this:
    @echo off
    ECHO Set wshShell = CreateObject( "WScript.Shell" ) >> usermessages.vbs
echo wshShell.Popup "The Microsoft Lync 2010 client is about to be installed.  Please close Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer before clicking OK to continue.", 300, "Microsoft Lync 2010 installation" >> usermessages.vbs
    ECHO WScript.Sleep(5000) >> usermessages.vbs
    WSCRIPT.EXE usermessages.vbs
    DEL usermessages.vbs /q
    ECHO Installing Microsoft Lync 2010...
    taskkill /F /IM communicator.exe
    taskkill /F /IM outlook.exe
    taskkill /F /IM iexplore.exe
    LyncSetup.exe /Install /Silent
    taskkill /F /IM communicator.exe
    msiexec.exe /p OUTLOOK.msp /qb-!
    office2007-kb936864-fullfile-x86-en-us.exe /passive /norestart
    msiexec.exe /update Lync.msp /qb-!
    ECHO Set wshShell = CreateObject( "WScript.Shell" ) >> usermessages.vbs
echo wshShell.Popup "The Microsoft Lync 2010 client installation was successful and can now be run from the Start Menu.", 300, "Microsoft Lync 2010 installation" >> usermessages.vbs
    WSCRIPT.EXE usermessages.vbs
    DEL usermessages.vbs /q
I'm sure it could be a lot nicer, there is no error passing or anything but it has served me well.

My boundaries and boundary groups are configured, I can see the objects in the Systems Management Container in AD, but still the agent install via WSUS will not work. Any suggestions?
    Cheers
    Sebastian Bammer

see my latest post. It looks like a bug in the setup. It selects a certificate but still it presents information that iis on the mp does not accept. Check your iis logs. Manual install works for ssl only sites. I haven't got any other methods yet. I will
    keep you updated.

The TS is deployed to the All Unknown Computers group.  The client machine I'm trying to install the OS is a VM with no OS currently installed so I'm assuming SCCM would see it as an Unknown Computer.  How would I verify that SCCM doesn't currently
hold any data for this client?
Also, I noticed the following in the SMSPXE log: <![LOG[Client boot action reply: <ClientIDReply><Identification
    Unknown="0"
Does Unknown="0" mean SCCM is not recognizing the client as being unknown?

  • Deploying client through gpo

We have a small site and the client msi is deployed through group policy assigned applications. Looking at the logs while trouble shooting another issue I noticed what appeared like the client re-installing itself to the original deployed version as it
later got updated by sccm during an update?
Does the client not have facilities internally to mitigate this, or is it expected and therefore not recommended to deploy the msi client given this caveat?
    Thanks!

I have always used the MSI when adding it into a GPO. Haven't done it for a while though.
    http://prajwaldesai.com/deploying-configuration-manager-2012-r2-clients-using-group-policy/
CU updates are small and not classed as upgrades, these usually have to be carried out by deploying the client upgrade package that is automatically created when you install any CU.
    http://www.ronnipedersen.com/2014/08/sccm-2012-how-does-automatic-client-upgrade-work/
If you push out the client via GPO or via client push you will find that version 5.00.7958.1000 is installed to the device.
If you are using MDT/OSD you can include the latest version of the client with the CU included.
I think Jason's startup script also searches for any MSP's in a folder specified so also distributes the latest client with the latest CU.

  • How import or publish ConfigMgr 2012 client into WSUS

Hi, I'm trying to deploy ConfigMgr 2012 r2 client through WSUS. But, I do not want to install SUP role on that WSUS server. What are my options.
I've tried Local update publisher to publish ConfigMgr client to WSUS and it works but not as I expected.
Whenever a client installs the ConfigMgr client from WSUS it downloads the client packages from DP and does not use the files available in the cab file. Is there a way to specify current directory as Source in ccmsetup switches?
I see I am left with installing the pre-requisites as separate update then execute client.msi to install sccm client. But that's a pain.. Anybody have any ideas?
Kindly mark as answer/Vote as helpful if a reply from anybody helped you in this forum. Delphin

Jason, That branch is not poorly connected. It has relatively lower bandwidth when compared with the centralized network. It can handle the client communication well and good. (I feel that I've not stated clearly in my previous reply)
The real question that I currently have(No offence), if at all I want to use the WSUS server as the main source for client deployment, what are my options?
Can I specify current directory as Source in ccmsetup.exe command line? (I don't see that can be done)
I'm thinking of a Vbscript to install pre-requisites and execute client.msi with required switches, but this would be my last approach. Do we have any better approach to accomplish this?.

  • Invoking Powershell modules on remote clients via package/command line

    Hello Everyone -
I have two modules(functions) that i've written and tested successfully locally in my environment that give me Uninstall and Repair functionality on whatever the string contains. Both .psm1's are delivered via a SCCM pkg that lands both into folders
in the Modules directory. My issue is I can't seem to invoke this in a deployment scenario...as i'd like to deliver the "Invoke-command" using SCCM's command line to simply say...
    Invoke-Command -scriptblock { Do-This "<string>" }
The above command works fine locally when...(exePol is set to Bypass).
1.)Modules have respective folders living in WindowsPowershell\Modules directory named xxxx.psm1
    2.)Import-Module -name <path\name of module>
3.)Verify Modules are loaded(moduleType is script)
But when fabricating the folders\files above with SCCM, and running the Invoke-Command(in many different ways remotely), i recieve the cmdlet, program doesn't exist and has no idea what i'm talking about. Folders\Files for .psm1's are present and do
show when running Get-Module -Listavailable locally on targeted clients.
Maybe this is related to the Import-Module command and the context i'm trying to delivery it in?
    I've tried multiple scenario's of...
A.) Psexec that launches powershell, followed by the Import-Module -name <path\name of module>
B.) .Bat file that launches powershell with the same Import-Module syntax
C.) PS1 that includes the same Import-Module line.
D.) Just straight from the command line of the Pkg/Program.
Has anyone tried this? Is there a better method when trying to deliver invoke-command on a module/function to a client via SCCM?
    TIA

[I see that the you are running the powershell.exe and then importing the module in the command line for the Program you created in SCCM, so just importing the module will do the repair action for you ??]
Not sure how else i would run a Import-Module without calling upon powershell.exe. The reason for using Import-Module first is it only creates the abilty of whatever the module(function in this case) on the client. So if i can get the remote
Import-Module to work, which would then allow me in the future to use an Invoke-Command -scriptblock { Do-This "string" } on the clients. In this case its both an Uninstall and Repair function with an assortment of switches and arguements that will aide me
in the future in managing our apps. For me to use the Modules, i would need to Invoke-Command as that is how the functions are built.
Okey so the module does get dumped to the end machine.
Suppose you have a test machine TEST01 where the Test.psm1 file  (having Test-Function)is delivered through SCCM.
Then try this and tell if it works:
    PS C:\> $session = New-PSSession -ComputerName TEST01
    PS C:\> Invoke-Command -Session $session -ScriptBlock {Import-Module Test.psm1 }
    PS C:\> Invoke-Command -Session $session -ScriptBlock {Test-Function #inside your Module}#Or Simply try below:
    PS C:\> Invoke-Command -ComputerName TEST01 -ScriptBlock {Import-Modules Test.psm1;Test-Function #inside your Module}
I think what you are doing is below.....for the example am taking "webadministration" module:
    PS C:\> Invoke-Command -ComputerName Server01 -ScriptBlock {Import-Module web*}
    PS C:\> Invoke-Command -ComputerName Server01 -ScriptBlock {get-website}
The term 'get-website' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check
the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.
    + CategoryInfo : ObjectNotFound: (get-website:String) [], CommandNotFoundException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : CommandNotFoundException
    + PSComputerName : sdwuweb017
Point here is you need to import the module and work with it in an already opened session....If you specify a computername every time then PowerShell opens the Session does what you want it to do and tears down the session. To persist the importing of the
module it must be done in a session which we make using New-PSSession and then run the commands against that session.
I might have misunderstood the problem but this is what I have got so far.
    Hope this helps

  • True IP address for ARD remote client via IPObserver [newbie]

I have had success managing LAN clients via ARD, but now my situation is different.
I want to still be able to provide ARD support via a network address specific to a workstation from outside the LAN, and the IP address I have tried does not connect. I am deriving the address from the IP Observer utility that I had my client launch on their system. [it is not the obvious 192.168.1.xxx address from DHCP]. I have confirmed that the Sharing attributes are correct on the client system, although it might be a 2.2 version [running 3.1 admin]. Based on a test, I believe the IP Observer address is the internet IP location of the router [not the actual router LAN IP], not the client.
The IP address indicates that it is in the correct domain [Roadrunner, NYC], but the client-specific address is inaccurate. Is it because the client is setup through a DHCP router and switch? will they need a static IP? Can they somehow reveal their station-specific IP via an iChat connection log? should I try to address the client though a different port?
I am new to this extension of ARD, so bear with the obviousness of the query to some of you.
    thx - steve

  • Getting Windows 10 Updates via WSUS?

There are a number of us previewing Windows 10 within our organisation, and these machines reside in OUs which result in them getting updates via WSUS. I presume this configuration is the cause of there being no update ring or update build options within
the OS. Looking at our WSUS, we have no Windows 10 product catalog for us to approve any updates.
What's the expected update mechanism from Microsoft on Enterprise Previewers? I had assumed that the OS would be locked to updates direct from MS but it seems it is still working with WSUS.

    Hey,
it's not fair to be honest. Of course you should not use a technical preview in a production Environment.
But it is possible to create a DEV active Directory which is using WSUS too.
So why not having a WSUS DEV product categorie to Support technical previews in WSUS from the Moment it is joined to a DEV Domain?
    Regards,
    Klaus

  • Distribution to clients via Adobe Content Viewer

Hi, I'm new to the DPS world and I have a question regarding distribution of folios via the Adobe Content Viewer. Am I correct in thinking that I can create the folio and distribute it to a client via the Adobe Content Viewer? I have a folio that I wish to distribute to a small group of client (approx 12 iPads). They will utilize the folio for trade shows, meetings and presentations over an extended period of time. Many thanks. Paul..

Yes, just share it with them and make sure they all have verified Adobe IDs.
