Deploying different file types in Java Web Applications

Hi,
I have recently return to web development in java after a long break and im having some trouble that i dont remember having before.
I have a web application bundles in a WAR file which is fully working in a fresh instillation of tomcat 5.5, servlets and jsp are all fine, but the jsp files are using a css which is also bundled in the WAR file.
The problem is that when i try to access to css from the html in the jsp files or directly by typing the url it is saying file not found, i have also tried this with a number of other file types, even .txt files .htm, .html files and the only files that i can access from the WAR once deployed are the jsps. I have tried adding the MIME types into the web.xml file for these files with no joy. Any idea how i can get these files to be accessible through the web server?

i have just worked out what it is, i had a servlet where the url-mapping set to the root of the web app i.e. '/'. when i changed it to something different it started to work.
thanks for the suggestion anyway

  • Deploying properties files outside of the web application in WebLogic 8.1

    Hi
              I am wondering if it is possible to deploy a web application and place configuration files (properties files, log4j xml files etc...) in a folder somewhere within WebLogic that is on the Server instance classpath. This would allow me to edit the config files and restart the server without having to hack into the web application .war file and then redeploy.
              I am really looking for an equivalent of the /applib folder in Oracle 10gAS (each OC4J server instance has an /applib folder which is on the classpath of the server).
              Is there an equivalent for a weblogic server instance?? (i.e. not just for the entire weblogic server but for individual sever instances).
              thanks
              Will

    WLS 9.2 includes pretty advanced features in this area. Both deployment plans and application libraries could be used. There's also a domain/lib directory where jar files can be placed and are visible throughout the server instance.
              Unfortunately 8.1 has none of these features. In 8.1, your choices are to either add these into the $CLASSPATH, or package them in the application.

  • How to create different log files for each of web applications deployed in OC4J

    Hi All,
    I am using OC4J(from Oracle) v1.0.2.2 and Windows2000. Now I want to know
    1. how to create different log files for each of my deployed web applications ?
    2. what are the advantages in running multiple instances of oc4j and in what case we should run
    multiple instances of OC4J ?
    3. how to run OC4J as Windows2000 Service rather than Windows2000 Application ?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Kumar.

    Hi Avi,
    First of all I have given a first reading to log4j and I think there will some more easy way of logging debugging messages than log4j (If you could provide me a detailed explanation of a servlet,jsp,java bean that uses log4j and how to use log4j then it will be very helpful for me). The other easy ways (if I am not using log4j) to my problem i.e creating different log files for each of web applications deployed in oc4j are
    I have created multiple instances of OC4J that are configured to run on different ports and so on each instance I have deployed a single web application . And I started the 2 oc4j instances by transferring thier error/log messages to a file. And the other way is ..
    I have download from jakarta site a package called servhelper . This servhelper is a thread that is started in a startup servlet and stopped in the destroy method of that startup servlet. So this thread will automatically capture all the system.out.println's and will print those to a file. I believe that this thread program is synchronized. So in this method I need not run multiple instances of OC4J instead each deployed web application on single instance of oc4j uses the same thread program (ofcourse a copy of thread program is put in each of the deployed web applications directories) to log messages on to different log files.
    Can you comment on my above 2 approached to logging debugging messages and a compartive explanation to LOG4J and how to use LOG4J using a simple servlet, simple jsp is appreciated ...
    Thanks and Regards,
    Ravi.

  • Deploy .war or .ear file to sun java web server 7.0 update 4

    Hi
    This could be a very daft question, but still I would like to get a clarification.
    My clients are a financial organisation, and for security and various other reasons they accept only .ear files. But this time the development and deployment would be done on Sun Java Web Server 7.0 update 4 . Now since its a web server I don't think I can deploy an .ear file.
    But sure I would like to get an answer from the experts here, is it possible to deploy and .ear file to Sun Java Web Server 7.0 before I can go back to my clients.
    Please help me here as I'm in a real big confusion here. Your help would be highly valuable to me.
    Thanks
    Jagdish

    Hi
    Thanks for the reply and I appreciate your help. Well I tried deploying an .ear file directly and web server 7 complains that it doesn't have a .war extension, understandably so.
    And then ripping apart the .ear file and deploying the .war file does work, as is expected of a web server.
    Well, about my customer is a bank and they have a very tight security policy, and why they need an .ear file is beyond my understanding. Well as far as this issue is concerned, I need a strong point so that I can get back to them that we need to comply to the third party software.
    But I didn't wan't to get back to them saying we can only provide a .war file and then later find out an .ear file could have done the job. And being seen as the technical experts we can't afford to make any mistake.
    Thanks
    Jagdish

    Hello Martin Gerritsen,
    This is Arti from the PM team.
    It seems to me that the brms facade has not yet started in your application server. You can check whether it has started or not by doing the following -
    You need to access the JavaEE Applications running on your AS. To do this -
    1. Open the nwa portal
    2. Navigate to Operations Management > Systems > Start & Stop > Java EE Applications
    3. Search for the brms related applications available on the server.
    In case the applications have not yet been started, please try to manually start them. If you still have problem in starting the BRMS facade please contact me.
    I will send across to you a fresh set of SCAs which you can deploy into your server to resolve this issue.
    Regards,
    Arti

  • Upgrading BOE XI R2 Java Web Applications to use BOE XI 3.1

    Hello,
    Does anyone know where I can get documentation about how to update Java Web Applications using BOE XI R2 to BOE XI 3.1? I search the documentation online and I couldn't find any.
    I believe that it should be a matter of just updating the Java Archve (JAR) files and the helper files in the 'crystalreportviewers' folder. There should not be any changes to how I use the Enterprise SDK, RAS and Viewers SDK. If there are any, there should be very few. I just want to make sure of this.
    Thanks,
    R.C.

    Hi,
    Upgrading the Jar files and viewers directory ( crystalreportviewers12) should be sufficient. Please refer to 3.1 Java developer guide for ,pre information.
    Thanks

  • How to package/inlcude C++ .exe and .dll files in a Java Web Start App?

    Hello,
    I have a Java Web Start application that runs fine if the application is only 1 .jar file.
    But I have a need to also run C++ .exe and .dll file from my Java application.
    I wonder if someone could please tell me how to package/include C++ .exe and
    .dll files in my Java web start application?
    Thank you and Best Regards,
    Akino

    You need to place the EXE and DLLs inside the jar.
    Java cannot execute them from the jar. They have to be extracted (see Class.getResourceAsStream) from the jar and copyied into the target machine file system, perahps to the temp directory. Now you can execute them using Runtime.exec() or ProcessBuilder.start().

    The file types are: Excel Spreadsheets, MS Word, PDF, Mail Attachments (outlook)
    I am aware of web.show_document but using that, don't the files need to be on a server?
    I don't want to use javabeans, if that helps.
    thanks

    Hello,
    Webutil is enough ;-)

  • Encoding different file types to binary

    Hi, im writing an application which takes different file types and then encodes them to be sent down a noisy channel, after random effects the data must be decoded back to binary. I have done the algorthims for encoding and decoding binary but i dont know how convert the file types to binary. (files such as jpgs and mp3 and txt)

    ...i know how to do the encoding on binary ...
    ...im not sure how to do this...Maybe you could start by explaining the problem in detail to yourself such that you understand it, then come back and tell us.
    Are you concerned about a difference between a JPG file vs a text file? Text files, in the context you are describing, can be treated as binary just as easily. Use a FileInputStream to read it and you get bytes just like any other file.

  • Make a jar file availlable for all web application at deployement time

    Hi !
    Is there a way to make a jar file availlable to all web application included in a .ear file. I know that i can manually copy the jar under (OC4J_HOME)/j2ee/home/lib , but can i create a package that have those web application ( lets say 4 ) and also the common jar file, deploy the that .ear file and make my jar file automatically availlable for all the deployed web application ? or is there a special command that i can use to copy that jar to the (OC4J_HOME)/j2ee/home/lib while deploying the .ear file ?
    i tried adding a manifest file with the classpath option but this seem to work only with jsp...
    thanx for your audience...

    Open the file %J2EE_HOME%/applcation-deployments/your-app/orion-application.xml. Add a tag like the one below:
    <library path="location_of_my_library.jar" />
    This will make the JAR availible to only your application, and the modules within it, and no others.

  • How to avoid directory listing in java web applications.

    how to avoid directory listing in java web applications.
    That is on typing the url of the application it should not the directory listing. Welcome tag in web.xml doesnot fully solve the problem, since still the images folder etc is still accessible

    I know of two ways.
    If you're using tomcat and have access to the conf directory.
    Edit your $TOMCAT/conf/web.xml. Find your default servlet properties and change
      <servlet>
        <servlet-name>default</servlet-name>
        <servlet-class>org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet</servlet-class>
        <init-param>
          <param-name>debug</param-name>
          <param-value>0</param-value>
        </init-param>
        <init-param>
          <param-name>listings</param-name>
          <param-value>true</param-value>
        </init-param>
        <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
      </servlet>to  <servlet>
        <servlet-name>default</servlet-name>
        <servlet-class>org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet</servlet-class>
        <init-param>
          <param-name>debug</param-name>
          <param-value>0</param-value>
        </init-param>
        <init-param>
          <param-name>listings</param-name>
          <param-value>false</param-value>
        </init-param>
        <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
      </servlet>And restart your server. This will affect every directory on the server, and return a 405 directory browsing forbidden error.
    Another way, is to place an index.jsp inside each directory with a simple one line redirect to your applications CONTEXT_PATH.response.sendRedirect("http://yourserver/yourapp/");This will only affect specific directories which contain these index.jsp files.
    Hope this helps
