Deploying or Cloning OS

Fairly new to the deployment world as far as Mac OS goes. We have bought 15 copies of Mountain Lion for deployment to a small division within the company.
Hardware background: Select few have MacBook Pro Retinas, otherwise MacBook Pro 6,2 mostly with some as old as MacBook Pro 5,3. All have at least 4GB of RAM and will be getting SSD's.
Software background: computers are currently on 10.6.8 mostly, some on 10.5.8. All need to be moved up to 10.8. Clean image is the preferred method instead of upgrading over the top of existing OS. Office will also be upgraded to 2011 and Adobe Creative Suite will be moving to CS6. Hardware
Question is whether or not I can simply build a "master" image with all the Finder settings I want for all (Sharing/Energy Saving prefs etc), freeware (browsers, FTP) and licensed software (Office) then simply use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone it to the other machines.  I know there is DeployStudio, JAMF and likely other suites but we're looking for a very simple and quick solution here as we have limited Mac knowledge or resources to dedicate to researching how to get those suites going.
Does cloning a mac to another lead to any strange behaviors once the clones are up and running?  Can the master and the clone be on the same network without problems?
Hanging on to or setting up recovery partitions at the same time as the cloning process would be a nice bonus also.
Thanks!

Cloning a Mac to another Mac doesn't really lead to any issues, with a couple exceptions:
1)  All the machines will have the same computer name or host name.
2)  If you bind a machine to Active Directory before "cloning" it, then all machines will be bound to AD with the SAME computer name in AD.  If you unbind one of the machines, ALL of them will be unbound in a single swoop.  Not good ;-)
So this "cloning" is a farily common technique used when people want to do a "quick and dirty" system to make a bunch of machines look and act the same.
That said, building packages that can be installed with a tool like JAMF on top of the "stock" OS X configuration is a better route to go, though it takes longer to set up.  Also, note that this "cloning" approach WILL break should you ever get new machines.  It is not possible to deploy an image on hardware that's newer than the image, so there are times along the way that new machines come out and you'll need to create an entirely new image on the new hardware, hence the reason the "package-based" approach works better down the road: It assumes you're starting with Apple's installer and then installing packages which lay down configuration settings or applications on top of it.
FWIW AFP548.com is probably the best site with any sorts of details you'd need here.

  • RTC-5008 when deploying after cloning

    LS,
In order to get environments in-sync, we cloned the production environment back to acceptance.
Naturally one has to unregister and re-register locations (necessary since clone provided production-locations), all OK. Also, WB_RT_SERVICE_NODES needs to be updated to point to the correct environment.
After al that I ran service_doctor.sql with following result:
All PL/SQL packages and functions are valid
Platform properties have been loaded correctly
Platform location has been seeded correctly
NLS messages have been loaded correctly
    The platform service is available
When trying to execute mappings I get RTC-5008 error. Also, the status in Deployment Manager is Not Deployed for all objects. On the target database however all objects exist and are valid.
Checked table WB_RT_TASKS and WB_RT_WAREHOUSE_OBJECTS in runtime repository, they are empty!
What happens? When you unregister locations, both aforementioned tables are emptied, hence all information on deployment is gone, hence the 5008 error.
So, is there a way to update the Runtime Repository so it gives a correct reflection on the current deployment status of all deployable OWB-objects in the target schema?
    Thanks, Patrick
ps This is sort of a follow-up on the reply I gave to Yilong Liu's post "RCT-5008: Unable to perform execution "

    Goeiemorgen Jean-Pierre,
Yes, re-deploying (i.e. replacing) the mappings works fine; then loading the datawarehouse is possible again. Unfortunately moving on with such an environment is much more difficult then, when you alter objects you're confronted with an unknown status. I for one would like to see a proper reflection of object-statuses.
I considered re-deploying the whole lot but I ran into some problems there.
Since all objects already exist only replace and upgrade are viable options. This works well for most objects, except for tables. Somehow the upgrade of tables always fails, where the first part (generate) succeeds but the second part (the actual deploy) fails without actually mentioning why it failed.
Unfortunately the tables contain data which we don't want to loose (hence the cloning instead of 'playing around' with the metadata), making it impossible to drop and create them.
Is there some other strategy for cloning that would make sense in my case, or some decent workaround?
    Thanks, Patrick

  • Servlet Context

Could anyone please clarify me the meaning of the following line:
"if the app is distributed, there's one ServletContext per JVM!"
The above line I've quoted from head first book page no. 159. One thing has been cleared that, there's one ServletContext per web app, but still not able to grab the above quoted part specifically.
    Thanks in advance.

For example, in online stores UI(view) might be designed in Java and gateway might be in some other language, this is called distributed. No doubt this is an example of distributed application, but in current context you are going out of track.
In core there will be only one ServletContextWhy and how? If different parts of an application developed using different languages (assuming technology) are deployed in different platforms using different run times, then how they can have same servlet context?
    Here is the explanation:
Usually any web application will have only one servlet context. However, in case of large applications to handle high number of concurrent users, typically web application is deployed in clustered environment. It means, same web application is deployed (and cloned) in multiple application server nodes. Each application server node has its own JVM (run time). In this scenario each application server will have different servlet context. That is why in your book it is written - If web application is distributed, there is one servlet context per JVM.
    Thanks,

  • Clone server - Best way?

    Hi
Sorry for this maybe stupid question. But what is the best/easiest way to clone a server using SCCM 2012 R2...or MDT?
We have a physical server that is running out of disk space so all we want is to clone the server, change disks and then deploy the cloned image.
Is there no other way then using Task Sequences / Create Task Sequence Media?
It would be very nice not to have e.g. sysprep running, because there no need for ut.
    Thanks!

You are talking about a P2P migration which is not a feature of ConfigMgr. In HP world you would use the HP ProLiant Essentials Server Migration Pack Physical to ProLiant-P2P Edition

  • Two AM's with the same name but different forms causes Deployment problems

Two Masters forms, DOC & PM are cloned except for the "where clause" in the View's query and the titles in their JSP's.
DOC workspace has a BC project and a BC4JSP Project. The BC project comprises of the EO and VO named ComVsStaticValue. In the Edit prop-> query for the VO I have specified the "where clause" as VSSV_VS_CODE='DOCTOR'.
    In Java Webserver :-
The JSP's are located in C:\source\Doctor\ .. and the *.xml and *.class files generated by the BC proj is in C:\source\Doctor\pol_ValueSet\..
If I execute Doctor in JWS the records are getting filtered properly.
PM workspace has a BC project and a BC4JSP Project. Again The BC project comprises of the EO and VO named ComVsStaticValue. In the Edit prop-> query for the VO I have specified the "where clause" as VSSV_VS_CODE='PAY_MODE'.
    In Java Webserver :-
The JSP's are located in C:\source\PMode\ .. and the *.xml and *.class files generated by the BC proj is in C:\source\PMode\pol_ValueSet\..
If I execute PM in JWS, the PM's JSP comes (the title is correct) but the records pertaining to DOC appears. I checked the View's xml file in C:\source\PMode\pol_ValueSet\ the "where clause" is correct. The xml & classes have the same name but their contents are different.
I want to know whether this problem is because both have the same name for the AM and the BC4JSP's property file.
    Please clarify.

Deploying two app modules with the same name will definitely cause problems.
The JSPs use the information in the properties file to connect to the application module and get the data they need from the appropriate View Objects in those app modules. If you have two app modules with the same name, when a JSP tries to connect, it has no way of knowing which one of the app modules to connect to if they both have the same name.
    You could:
    1. Just use one application module that contains all the View Objects you need to access.
    or
    2. Rename one of the application modules or the package it is located in so the names are distinct. If you choose this method, you will also need to update the JSPs (specifically the 'registerApplicationFrompPopertyFile' method call), and your JSP project's appmodule property file.

  • Howto deploy a temporary exchange 2013 server for migration between two Office 365 accounts?

    Objective:
We plan to migrate our office 365 from our current tennant (E3) to a new tennant (M) to drastically cut our annual costs for the same services, while retaining the mail and group memberships of all our users. This will involve installing an exchange server
to download and upload mail from the old tennant to the new tennant.
    Background:
We are a longtime O365 customer, and have been a customer since before the "Midsize business" plans existed. There is no "cookie cutter" migration path from E3 to M. Microsoft currently recommends deploying an MS exchange server and off-boarding
the mailboxes from your E3 subscription and then On-boarding them to a new account under the M plan.  As ridiculous as this is, this is indeed the path our company has decided to go. It isn't cool/fair that we're being shackled to the E plans (that are
vastly more expensive) when we're a small/midsize business that has been a longtime customer of O365, while new customers of equal size to us can expect to save over $4000 annually. The services (when compared) offered are nearly identical.
After calling MS support several times for guidance for this issue, I am advised that we should contact a 'partner' and ask for their support in doing this migration. We did as requested and were provided a quote to the tune of approximately $15,000 to do this
migration for us. Obviously this is unacceptable, and thus our business has decided to rely on my abilities to get it done. Again, involving an MS partner is not an option.
    Environment:
    1 MS AD domain:
    - Original FQDN was @contoso.ca of this domain and UPNs were [email protected]
    - UPN has been changed to [email protected] to allow for ADFS
    - ADFS has been deployed and SSO works for all users with UPN [email protected]
    - An "On-Prem exchange server" does not yet exist
1 O365 Account where main tennant FQDN is @corp.com
    - There are 5 registered domains
    -contoso.ca
    -corp.com
    - contoso.legacy.ca
    -deprecated/will be deleted
    -deprecated/will be deleted
    - There are 40 E3 licenses, all using a @corp.com UPN
    - There are 5 E1 licenses (we acknowledge that these will be upgraded to an M following the migration) that use the UPN contoso.legacy.ca
    - No accounts currently use contoso.ca for email
    - O365 was upgraded to 'the latest version' sometime in summer 2013.
    Migration Plan (High Level):
Setup a local windows server (trial license)
Deploy an exchange 2013 server (trial license) on the aforementioned windows server  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/hh973395.aspx
      Prepare and deploy Dirsync Deployment
    of Dirsync
Add exchange to office 365 and begin replicating the mailboxes from the cloud to the exchange server. Wait for synchronization to complete.
    More information: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh534377(v=exchg.150).aspx
    http://help.outlook.com/en-us/140/ff633682.aspx
Evaluate total time it took to sync data.
Time it takes to download data to exchange should be relatively similar to time it takes to restore mail to the new service.
Open a new office365 account under the M plan.
Plan a 1 hour mail & contoso.ca domain login outage
temporarily change all user UPN's to match the new tennant
perform a dirsync to the new tennant
disable dirsync after all accounts have been auto-created/provisioned
      re-establish UPN + mail access.
Plan a date and time for the cut over.
remove the exchange hybrid server from the old tennant.
Point MX records directly to the exchange server.
      Cut office 365 service.
After the 30 minutes ~ 1 hour 'mandatory' wait time imposed by MS to 'register' the domain with O365, add @corp.com to
    the new tennant
fix all user UPN's in the cloud to match their real UPN's.
This can be done with powershell.
attach exchange hybrid server to new tennant
Point MX records to the new tennant
Migrate all data from the local exchange server to the cloud under the new plan.
    Current progress (Lab):
I have created a sandbox (Lab with no internet access or connectivity to production) environment in VMware and cloned the following servers to it:
1x Domain Controller (DC) running windows server 2012 (named DC02)
    1x DC running windows server 2008 R2 (named DC01)
    1x windows server 2012 R2 - prepped with all the pre-requisites to install exchange 2013. (named EXC01)
Where I am stuck / Problem:
I have installed exchange on the server EXC01 in the lab environment using my account. I am a domain administrator in the contoso.ca domain, but my UPN is [email protected]
After the installation of exchange, I notice that my email address in Active Directory changed from @corp.com to @contoso.ca. By default, I do not see @corp.com to be an available email address to select as my email address, and changing it in AD does not resolve
    the problem.
In the exchange portal, I found "Mail flow ---> Accepted Domains", and believe I should add @corp.com to the accepted domain list. Questions:
    1) Must I add corp.com and the other domains that exist in office 365 to the local exchange before I go through with the hybrid wizard?
    2) If I must add them to exchange, I am provided with three choices:
    - Authoritative Domain
    - Internal Relay Domain
    - External Relay Domain
Given that the domain is currently in office365 and is authoritative there, which of these applies?
    3) Most documentation I have found has been about a one way migration from on-prem to the cloud. I have had a hard time finding a step by step guide for cloud to local (new server) and then back to cloud. Does anyone here have any good documentation for this
process? Would love it if it took into consideration multiple UPN/email addresses.

    Hi,
Here are my answers you can refer to:
    1. Yes, we should select the primary SMTP domain for our organization and any other accepted domains that will be used in the hybrid deployment:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj200787(v=exchg.150).aspx
    2. It depends on the usage of the specific accepted domain. And Exchange version has no influence.
To determine it, you can firstly check the function of the three types in the following article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124423(v=exchg.150).aspx
    3. Here are some reference about the migration from on-premise Exchange server to Office 365:
    http://www.msexchange.org/articles-tutorials/office-365/exchange-online/configuring-exchange-2013-hybrid-deployment-migrating-office-365-exchange-online-part1.html
Additionally, since the issue is related to Exchange online, I recommend you ask for help on our Exchange online forum to get more professional help:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/msonline/en-US/home?forum=onlineservicesexchange
If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.

  • Deploying EJBs with same name in different application jars on JBOSS

    Hi,
We are attempting to deploy entity beans with the same name in 2 different EJB application jars on jboss 3.2.5. One bean is an extension of the other, so some of the DB columns they refer to are the same (they access different DB tables in different tablespaces). However, the field names corresponding to these DB columns in the beans themselves are different (i.e. DB column serviceid is associated with the field serviceid in one bean and service_id in the other).
We have altered jboss.xml for one of the EJB applications so that the jndi-name used to access that application's bean is different to the jndi-name used to access the entity bean in the other EJB jar.
However, when we attempt to deploy both jar files on the same jboss server, one of the applications deploys successfully and when we deploy the other, we get EJB spec violation errors, such as the following:
14:18:34,631 WARN [verifier] EJB spec violation:
    Bean : CommunityAddress
    Section: 10.6.2
Warning: The entity bean class must define a get accessor for each CMP field.
    Info : Field: service_id
I'm presuming that this is because the bean which references the serviceid DB column with a field called serviceid is being mixed up with the other bean, which has a service_id field.
Can anyone tell me if there is anything else that is required to get entity beans/EJBs in different applications but with the same names (and some overlapping fields, etc) deployed successfully on the same jboss server apart from editing jboss.xml for one of the applications?
    Is this a jbosscmp-jdbc.xml issue?
    Any help much appreciated,
    Maurice

    Hi Srinath
Thanks for your response. Its not cloning, its like check-in file first, then check-out the file and do some editing and then again upload the same file with different revision number using RIDC. I got the solution now.

  • VDI - RemoteApp does not start in "Virtual machine-based desktop deployment" environment

    Hello dear community,
I would like to familiarize myself to the subject of desktop virtualization and have built up a test environment for this purpose. Most went smoothly, but now I'm trying for days to figure out, why the deployed RemoteApp programs in my test environment not
start. Unfortunately posts here and in other blogs were not helpful. I hope you can point me to the right direction. :)
    My environment
    Server 1
Windows Server 2012 R2 Std with the roles
        AD DS,
        DNS,
        DHCP
    Server 2
Windows Server 2012 R2 Std with the roles
        Hyper-V,
Remote Desktop Services (Connection Broker, Virtualization Host, Web Access),
        IIS
    VMs
    Windows 8.1
    RD Client 1
Laptop with Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 28, RemoteApp and Desktop Connections
    RD client 2
iPad with Microsoft Remote Desktop App
    Setting up the environment
The installation of the environment I made as mentioned in the following blog post. http://blog.itvce.com/?p=1569 But with only two physical servers.
    What does work?
Prepared with SysPrep and "cloned" Windows 8.1 VMs created in the collections of virtual desktops are accessible via WebAccess (RDWeb) using IE, FF, Windows Start menu and also from the iPad as a complete desktop for authorized users/groups. The VMs
wake up in Hyper- V from the saved state and roll back to it after the user logs off. So far so good.
    What does not work?
Now to what does not work. One collection of virtual desktops I have reserved for the publication of RemoteApp programs. So this new collection - like the above - was created. The VMs were built and successfully registered in AD. Then I used "publish RemoteApp
Programs" wizard in the collection. The available programs were successfully read from the VM. WordPad, Calc and Paint I used for the test. The programs/apps will then appear in RDWeb.
In RDWeb I now click on the Calculator, the warning described in many blogs appears that resources are passed through and then that the certificate could not be verified. Although I have already added the certificate to the trusted root CA in the user and the
computer area, I acknowledge that I would like to connect despite the certificate error with "Yes".
After about 20 seconds the "Connect to ..." window disappears and that it was. In Hyper-V Manager the corresponding VM does not move even if it's running. If the VM was not running and in saved state, it is at least started. But the Calculator will
    still not start.
Can anyone give me a proper hint what to do, which Bing, Google and Technet did not have?
    Thank you in advance!
    Kay
PS: Since I am from Germany, I have asked the question first in the German forum. Unfortunately, without success.

    Hi Kay,
    Thank you for contacting Microsoft.
From your description, I learnt that the issue you are experiencing is that you want to eliminate the certificate warning when launching the Remote App applications. Please let me know if I misunderstand your purpose.
Firstly, please let me know what certificate you are using. Then please export and import the certificate on the RDSH server. We need to manage the certificates. Please refer to
    the steps below.
    1. Open the Collections which you want to manage, click
    Edit Deployment Properties.
    2. On the Certificates page, select
    Select existing certificate.
    3. When the
Select Existing Certificate page appear, please select Choose a different certificate, locate to the right exported certificate path, and type the correct password, and
select Allow the certificate to be added to the Trusted Root Certification Authorities certificate store on the destination computers.
    4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to finish the certificate configuration, here we can use the same certificate.
If anything unclear, please feel free to let me know.
    Best regards,
    Sophia Sun

  • Legality of cloning hard drive

Hi, just a quick need to confirm that the process of cloning one's entire hard drive, incuding the OS, is entirely legal. (My apologies if this question has been answered before: a quick search around yeilded nothing clear, and I am with a friend who needs to know.)
The OS in question is Windows XP, though I'm also interested in OSX's legal stance on this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rhys

    Chris,
Thanks a lot for the link. The title of that page from Microsoft looked promising, but I think it addresses the deployment of Windows installations onto multiple computers. I looked around their site--maybe I'm just a bit dull, but I'm finding it hard to find a clear answer to this seemingly simple question. Is it legal to back up your data by cloning your hard drive onto an external drive (which is bootable in case the internal drive fails) which of course entails making a copy of the OS?
Don't mean to be lazy: I'll keep looking when I have time later--I thought someone here must know and could easily confirm this.
    Thanks for your help, again.

    Scenario:
    - Development server running OracleAS Standard Edition One.
    - Production server running OracleAS Standard Edition One
Idea is to develop portal on development server, and, once satisfied and tested, deploy to production server.
    Questions
    1. Is this the right development model? If not, what is the recommended approach?
    2. Would deployment take place via Enterprise Manager? If so, would the development portal have to be turned into an EAR file, and then pulled in to the production server? Or can the two servers be managed within a single instance of Enterprise Manager (on the production server?), and if so, how would the deployment model work?
    Thanks for the input.

    Hi there,
A1: Yes, I believe so, but will depend actually on what you wish to do.
A2: Depends how is your application made. I don't think you'll be using EM to make the deployment as this would be a Portal. So you may need to either use the cloning process of the iAS or the RDBMS utilities (where Metalink may help you further depending on the version of the Portal you are in)... or use the Portal Export / Import feature to pass a Page Group from one side to another (this will work only one-way - please refer to the Portal Configuration Guide chapter 10).
As to the "two servers be managed within a single instance of Enterprise Manager"... why not? You can have two RepCA dbs hooked to the same iAS infrastructure to be managed. If I'd recommend it this way... maybe not... remember that if it will be a Development env and a Production env... I'd recommend them to be really separated (just playing on the safe side... maybe :-) ).
    I hope it helps...
    Cheers,
    Pedro.
