Deployment of iTunes
I would like to deploy iTunes to about 60 Windows XP SP2 machines. I have looked a number of locations for such information and have not been successful. Does anyone know if there is an .MSI for iTunes or if the .EXE has such a thing as a silent install and what the flags would be?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
You will need to navigate to the local temp directory in Windows(assuming that's what your using since you're referring to an MSI package). When you launch the downloaded file from Apple(.exe file) an MSI installer package will then be extracted to the local temp directory(can easily be accessed by entering %TEMP% in the run dialog. Once you have the MSI package you can then apply a transform or just run a silent install.
Good Luck

Deploying iTunes in lab environments campuswide
We are creating an iTunes U page for our institution (small college), but my question involves the deployment of iTunes across our campus. What is the best, most streamlined method for deploying and using iTunes over a campus network that has migrating user profiles?
We have several lab environments in which students would access iTunes, and we want to minimize the issues involving storage limits with migrating profiles, when any particular user will login to access iTunes from any particular workstation. Specifically, what would be the profile ramifications from accessing the user agreement to syncing their devices? Furthermore, we are mostly a Windows-based campus, so we're looking for any additional caveats that might occur.
Any thoughts, suggestions or references would be greatly appreciated. We are creating an iTunes U page for our institution (small college), but my question involves the deployment of iTunes across our campus. Deploying a Flex iPad App wirelessly without registering a device's UIUD
Hi
Is there any information or step by step guide to building and deploying a Flex iPad app wireless, without registering the device's ID? Is this possible with Flex? We do have an iOS Developer Enterprise Program license. Every set of instructions from a Flex point of view that I have read assume that either 1) The release build will be deployed through iTunes or 2) the release build will be deployed to device who's ID are registered on the Apple dev center. Any help would be appreciated.
The problem is that when attempting to install the app on a device that is not registered on the apple site, an error occurs stating that the app was unable to download/install.Hi Emanuele,
In your case, SUP would provide the development tools, framework and APIs to easily handle the authentication, synchronization etc. You wouldn't need to define your own synchronization mechanism, it's in the product. Now if the updates are only sent from the server to the mobile devices, this shouldn't be to difficult to handle even without SUP.
You could easily create REST Web Services using Gateway and then consume them using the mobile devices. You don't want to consume SOAP Web Services using a mobile application, trust me. You could do this using the ICF (Internet Communication Framework) to achieve this but again it would be easier with Gateway.
You don't necessarily need SUP or Gateway to create only a simple mobile application. But then if your customer is happy with their first mobile application, they'll want more. And then products such as SUP or Gateway can make the difference. These products prodvide a standard development environment, tools to manage the apps and the users etc. With multiple mobile apps connected to multiple back-ends with more and more users, you'll need a middleware to manage all this and make sure the performance is great.
Usually people don't use SUP or Gateway for their first mobile application but then they start to see the benefits of mobility and they want more. And then they start to realize the benefits of these products and they understand that a real mobile strategy has to be defined etc.

Also I tried disabling the hardware acceleration, but when I right click on a flash content, it didn't give me any option for settings, so I don't know how to go about doing that. Hope this info helps. -
C++ COM Catch Return Events
I have been using the C++ COM iTunes Interface for a while in my application to import files into iTunes via the SDK.
This has been working fine for a couple of years now however I have come across an issue with the deployment of iTunes 9 and greater.
In some machines the iTunes hangs while converting a file and importing to a playlist if I close my application that links into it the convert and import completes fine, this is not on all machines but a couple of customers have raised this issue.
I was wondering if anyone has implemented some form of catching the return events instead of having to sit in a while loop constantly calling:
hr = spConvertOpStatus->get_ProgressValue( &progressValue );
till it is complete. Any help would be greatly appreciated on this issue.
Regards,
APHi Jason-F,
I’ve found that when I raise COM events while Excel is in edit mode (e.g. a cell is being edited) the event is “lost”. Meaning,
the VBA event handler is never called (even after the Excel edit mode is finished) and the call to the C# event delegate passes through and fails silently with no exceptions being thrown.
Do you mean you didn't raise EventOne event? EventOne handler like following?
' EventOne handler
Private Sub managerObj_EventOne()
Debug.Print "EventOne " & g_nCounter
g_nCounter = g_nCounter + 1
End Sub
After test your code, here is my screenshot
And here is my execute log in C# ComServerTest.

Cannnot install Flash Player 11
I get access to virtually all contetns everywhere with my Flash 10 (Firefox, Windows 7), except that I have to click every time on the "activate plugins" red button in the left corner of the Firefox address line, but one particular site asks specifically to install Flash 11 and does not let me in otherwise.
I'm installing it again and again, not getting any error messages, and ending on the Adobe Web-page saying that the installation was successful (I can actually see Flash 11 among my installed programs), yet no site then believes that I have any Flash installed, all suggesting that I "get Adobe Flash Player" (not even the red button appears in the addres bar to help me out).
Strangely, once, after 1.5 hrs of re-installing, I began getting access with my Flash 11 to all sites. Yet this was gone after rebooting, so I'm back to square one.

Software & equipment suggestions
I have just been told that I need to turn in a list of software and equipment our school needs for *iTunes U* - +by the end of the day!+
I've seen several *iTunes U* sites (for example, Penn State) that talk about the software and equipment they recommend for creating content for *iTunes U*. I'd like to get suggestions from others.
What hardware are you using for audio? for video? for mobile recording of "man on the street" and other interviews?
What software do you use for editing the audio? the video?
Are you using *Podcast Producer* (part of *Leopard Server*)? If so, what hardware are you running the *Leopard Server* software on?
I need to submit my list by 5:00 today. I'll be checking back here throughout the day.
Thanks in advance.
--DonWhoah, Don, the end of the day!? Well, time to crank up those typing fingers of mine!
Okay, first thing is that ... "in principle" ... you might not need to buy anything to implement iTunes U at your site. You might already have what you need. On the other hand, you might need to buy stuff ... it depends on what you have.
The main thing that you do in iTunes U is turn a user request at your site into something Apple can handle. Generally this is done through a portal website ... a website you run ... that can take a user login and turn it into what's called a "token string". You may already have such a website ... a website that users log into to get "stuff" at your site ... a website that understands your "system" of doing things. The site might be commercial (Blackboard, say) or it might be homebrew. But if you don't have the site, you'll need it. It can be simple ... OS X Server running Apache 2, or Linux plus Apache ... or even IIS running on Windows Server. You'll be writing some CGI ... so pick the environment you feel most comfortable in ... assuming your site does not dictate the portal.
Podcast Producer is a bit different. Podcast Producer is sort of orthogonal to iTunes U ... iTunes U is mostly about distributing content to students/whomever through the familiar iTunes U interface. Basically, when you buy into iTunes U, you're buying into the synergy that exists between iPods and iTunes and using it to your school's advantage. But Podcast Producer is all about creating podcasts and processing them in an automated way. For Podcast Producer, you do need hardware ... typically one computer (a Mac mini makes for a good one) per classrom/lecture hall/other place ... and a bunch of servers/storage devices to do the podcast production. What you need depends utterly on the scope of your project. To do a pilot ... a proof of concept ... I'd get two Mac minis, two DV cameras, one OS X Server ... maybe a SAN to go with. The SAN is kind of optional for a pilot ... but the minimum you've gotta have for Podcast Producer is an OS X Server.
In addition, depending on the scope of your project, you might want to consider getting good microphones ... maybe some production software ... Camtasia, ScreenFlow, editing tools ... but this is strictly optional.
A "minimum" deployment of iTunes U (assuming you don't have a portal server) is some kind of web server ... let's say XServe running OS X ... and a good amount of your time and effort.
A "minimum" deployment of Podcast Producer would be one or two Mac minis ... maybe two DV cameras ... one OS X Server (XServe) with an optional SAN attached. -

ADF Mobile: Code Signing Error Workaround
Hi, everyone:
If you are doing ADF Mobile development, and you need to deploy the application to an iOS device, you would need to compile/deploy the app with iOS App Certificates and Provisioning Profile. This means you would need to "Deploy to Package" or "Deploy to iTunes" during deployment, and configure JDeveloper with the proper certificates/profiles. In some instances (exact combination is still not clear), deploy and signing the application to generate the ipa file may fail with similar error message at the end of the deployment log:
[01:04:45 PM] Deployment failed due to one or more errors returned by '/usr/bin/xcrun'. The following is a summary of the returned error(s): Command-line execution failed (Return code: 1) error: /usr/bin/codesign force preserve-metadata=identifier,entitlements,resource-rules sign iPhone Distribution: Oracle Corporation resource-rules=/var/folders/x7/21sjrpx13qj9tq20z14s3j_w0000gn/T/tkROhP11qU/Payload/HelloWorld.app/ResourceRules.plist --entitlements /var/folders/x7/21sjrpx13qj9tq20z14s3j_w0000gn/T/tkROhP11qU/entitlements_plistEINPBkIG /var/folders/x7/21sjrpx13qj9tq20z14s3j_w0000gn/T/tkROhP11qU/Payload/HelloWorld.app failed with error 1. Output: /var/folders/x7/21sjrpx13qj9tq20z14s3j_w0000gn/T/tkROhP11qU/Payload/HelloWorld.app: replacing existing signature Program /usr/bin/codesign returned 1 : [/var/folders/x7/21sjrpx13qj9tq20z14s3j_w0000gn/T/tkROhP11qU/Payload/HelloWorld.app: replacing existing signature
This issue is a known issue and is not related to ADF Mobile. The workaround is discussed in this article:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7425840/that-codesign-returned-1-object-ifile-format-invalid-or-unsuitable-problem-aga
This article refers to the old location of Xcode, so you would need to adjust the paths accordingly. The path for Xcode 4.3 and above would be like:
/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents//Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/bin/PackageApplication to this script file.
To modify it, you probably can’t use TextEdit. I end up opening a terminal session, changed the file permission, and used vi to update it.
This fixed the issue I was having.
Hope this is helpful - please drop a reply if you encountered the same issue.
Thanks,
Joe HuangI ran the entire code and the output is:

What do you mean by "the "-sign" parameter values look dubious (besides your name :-P), how can it interpret those spaces?"
The sign parameter that i'm using is from the KeyChain app, so i'm assuming in the preferences where it asks for the Certificate, that its asking for the certificate name in KeyChain? When trying to escape the spaces in the Preferences menu, it complains that the certificate names do not match.. Or am i meant to be using another parameter here..?

Hello, deployed an want to use an itunes gift card after I put in the number to use it and purchase music itunes continues to take me back to the credit card billing page. I only want to use the gift card, how to I get pass the credit card billing page. Also as soon attempt to put in my new credit card number it immediately times out can this be associated to where I'm located?
Go to your account on your computer and set the credit card to none. This will allow you to use the gift card.

I can't find a simple answer to this question from Apples flashy "documentation" or from any online straighforward guides.
There is an app called "Articulate Mobile Player" that we want to deploy to our fleet of iPads. These iPads do not have Apple IDs/iTunes Accounts configured for them to access the iTunes store.
We have access to the Apple Configurator for Windows and Trend Micro MDM (Mobile Security and App Management for BYOD).
From what I can ascertain perhaps we need to create VPP account, "purchase" the free app required to gain access to the .IPA file, then either use our MDM solution or Configurator to place the app on devices.
Will we then need an Apple ID/iTunes Account to use the App?
Is there further requirements such as certificates and such? The iPads are configured to use the Trend MDM for app deployment as far as I am aware.
Thanks for the help and hopefully prompt response on exactly what is required for what is a really simple requirement and should not be this complicated. That was quick!! So to double check on the statement:
"If both the Dutch apps + the newly downloaded HK app are visible (ON THE DEVICE), then I should be able (ON THE DEVICE) to switch back to my Dutch Apple ID, to keep receiving updates on my Dutch apps (including, and not limited to, newspapers, magazines, etc), Accepting that I would not be able to receive updates of the HK app."
This is a valid statement? -
ITunes 10.4 Deployment Documentation?
Forgive me if the answer is obvious, but I've looked all over and just haven't been able to find what I'm looking for...
Is there any "official" Apple documentation for packaging and deploying iTunes? Or perhaps a "customization wizard"?
I'm looking for answers to questions such as; where are the preferences stored and what files and registry settings
would need to be copied, etc.
Version 10.1.2.17 saved the preferences to the "iTunesPrefs.xml" files in %user%\AppData\Apple Computer\ITunes and
%user%\AppData\Apple Computer\iTunes, but at first blush it appears version 10.4.0.80 may be saving some information
elsewhere, also. But I'm having a tough time figuring out exactly where.
I'm using Wise Package Studio to create a transform... pretty simple with v10.1. Seem to be struggling a bit with v10.4,
so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
